Welcome to Season 5, Episode 27! We have been known to be obsessed with true crime stories. So we were really excited to read L.A. Coroner: Thomas Noguchi and Death in Hollywood by Professor Anne Soon Choi and published by Third State Books. And we were even more excited when Anne visited us as a guest.  Professor Choi is the Interim Associate Director of Online Pedagogy and Learning for the Faculty Development Center, and Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Cal State Dominguez Hills. She's a historian and also interested in True Crime as well as Asian American history… so writing a book about Dr. Thomas Noguchi is the perfect intersection of these two interests.  Noguchi was the highest ranking Japanese American official in Los Angeles County during the 1960s and 70s, and he performed autopsies of some of the most well-known people who passed away during that time including Marilyn Monroe, Robert F. Kennedy, Sharon Tate, and Natalie Wood. My colleague Annie Armstrong mapped out a world of Cybertrucks, crypto wallets, and Alec Monopoly openings—a bro-filled art scene where KAWS, MSCHF, and Daniel Arsham are the mainstays, and where spectacle often outpaces substance. Then Adrien Brody had an art show. This summer, at Eden Gallery in New York, the Oscar-winning actor unveiled his solo exhibition "Made in America," including a body of work that dives headfirst into the visual language of red-chip art. The show includes mixed-media paintings with portraits of Marilyn Monroe, and there are also Basquiat-inspired crowns, rats, and images of Mickey Mouse. There's even a participatory element that involves audience members sticking their used chewing gum on the gallery wall. Brody's maximalist, pop-culture salad seems tailor-made for virality, sure—but reactions in the art world have been quite mixed. Some see Brody's exhibition as a genuine creative endeavor; but others view it as a high-profile example of what happens when celebrity, commerce, and art collide in an already hype-driven market. Some don't mind the celebrity aspect but think it is just bad painting. Either way, what's certain is that Brody isn't just dabbling in this so-called red chip art world sphere—he's fully committed and he is now the new face of it— in all of its chrome-coated, algorithm-charmed aesthetic. One in three adult pornography users are exposed to violent or abusive content online, with the majority backing new legislation to prevent publication of harmful content. Four months on from the publication of her government commissioned review into the challenge of regulating online pornography, Baroness Bertin joins Clare McDonnell in the studio to discuss what's been happening. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said 'we must act now' as he announced a national investigation into maternity care in England. The inquiry, which will look at the ten worst-performing services in the country, as well as the entire maternity system, is designed to be a rapid review reporting by December this year. Families say they feel let down by a system that's supposed to care them and midwives have told us they dread going in to work because of pressures and lack of resources. So will this investigation bring about the lasting change that parents and professionals so badly want? Clare hears from BBC Investigative Journalist Divya Talwar and Clare Walton, chief executive of the Royal College of Midwives.Cheetahs are the fastest land animals in the world with speeds of around 70 miles per hour. **Discussion begins at 4:15**Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson, 99 years ago this week.  Rising to fame in the 1950s, she captivated audiences with her beauty, charm, and vulnerability.  She starred in numerous successful films, including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, and Some Like It Hot, solidifying her status as a Hollywood legend.  Despite her glamorous public image, Norma Jeane battled with personal struggles including mental health issues, substance abuse, and a string of troubled relationships.   On August 5, 1962, Norma Jeane was found dead in her Los Angeles home at the age of 36.  The official cause of death was listed as a probable suicide due to an overdose of barbiturates.  A bottle of sleeping pills was found near her bed, and she had reportedly been dealing with depression in the weeks leading up to her death.  However, her death has remained shrouded in mystery and controversy.  Numerous inconsistencies in the timeline of her final hours, the delay in contacting authorities, and the disappearance of personal documents and records have fueled speculation that her death may not have been a simple suicide.  Some believe that foul play was involved, citing her alleged affairs with high-profile political figures such as President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert F.
