Notre série d'été nous plonge dans le monde du cinéma pour explorer les thèmes liés à l'économie. Filmer les flux monétaires n'est pas en soi très intéressant. En revanche, plonger au cœur de l'intimité d'un ou d'une milliardaire est un sujet passionnant. Regardons de plus près cet étrange personnage. Citizen Kane, réalisé par Orson Welles en 1941, est l'un des premiers films de l'histoire du cinéma qui porte à l'écran l'ambiguïté de notre rapport à l'argent. Le grand réalisateur américain nous éblouit autant par sa mise en scène que par les mouvements de caméra ou encore la lumière. Son film, coécrit avec Herman J. Mankiewicz, dont Welles incarne le rôle-titre, est un véritable chef-d'œuvre cinématographique. L'homme le plus puissant des États-Unis Tout au long du film, un enquêteur assis dans l'ombre tente de résoudre une énigme : celle d'un puissant magnat de la presse, Charles Foster Kane, personnage inspiré du parcours du baron des journaux américains, William Randolph Hearst, mort dans son palais, entouré de milliers d'objets et d'œuvres d'art. Aucune des personnes interrogées n'est en mesure de dire toute la vérité sur le défunt. Un mot que Kane prononce sur son lit de mort symbolise cette énigme : « Rosebud » (Bouton de Rose) fait référence à la luge de son enfance. L'homme le plus puissant, le plus influent et le plus riche des États-Unis ne rêvait, au fond de lui, que de son enfance modeste, mais heureuse, où il était au plus près des choses. Cela, avant que l'argent ne l'éloigne de tout et de tous. Le rêve d'être aimé pour ce que l'on est L'ambiguïté ou plutôt le quiproquo est au cœur de Let's Make Love, une comédie de George Cukor sortie en 1960 et connue en France sous le titre du Milliardaire. L'intrigue ne brille pas par sa complexité : une troupe de théâtre prépare une revue dans laquelle sont ridiculisées des célébrités du moment, dont le milliardaire en question d'origine française établi à New York. Ce dernier, interprété par Yves Montand, avant d'interdire ce spectacle, assiste incognito à une répétition, tombe amoureux de l'actrice, jouée avec malice par Marilyn Monroe, puis s'engage dans la pièce sous pseudonyme pour séduire la belle. Scénario franchement paresseux, tournage émaillé d'histoires de liaison entre Montand et Monroe… Tout cela est vrai. Et pourtant, cette comédie musicale en forme de vaudeville, drôle et légère, pose une question provocatrice : peut-on aimer un homme riche seulement pour son charmant sourire ? Voici le thème tout aussi provocateur de notre dernier opus : Le Loup de Wall Street (The Wolf of Wall Street), un film réalisé par Martin Scorsese en 2013, dont l'histoire est basée sur l'ascension, la chute et la rédemption d'un ancien courtier en Bourse, Jordan Belfort. Le golden boy À son apogée, la société de courtage financier fondée par le vrai Jordan Belfort gère pour un milliard de dollars d'actifs. Mais les arnaques et les frasques de ce « golden boy » attirent l'attention du FBI. Accusé de délit d'initié et de blanchiment d'argent en 1998, Belfort coopère avec les autorités et n'effectue que 22 mois de prison. Il devra aussi restituer plus de 110 millions de dollars aux investisseurs floués. À sa sortie de prison, Belfort se reconvertit en conférencier pour, dit-il, former la nouvelle génération de financiers. This year, that meant staging the magazine's first-ever dog wedding. On August 2nd, at the Surrey Hotel on the Upper East Side, two Vogue staff dogs, Edie Berlinger Douglas and Tux Murillo, said "I do" in a custom Rachel Antonoff gown and Susan Alexandra jewels. The wedding kicks off a bigger Dogue rollout, including a cover contest winner (an Italian greyhound named Sir Spud), a staff dog shoot inside the Condé Nast studios, and new collaborations with Alex Mill, J.Crew, and ceramicist Henry Holland. The episode's second half is a trip into old Hollywood, as Nicole Phelps sits down with Mauricio and Roger Padilha to discuss their new book, Jean Louis: Hollywood's Bombshell Designer. As research, the brothers watched all 188 films that the couture-trained costume designer worked on. Jean Louis's two most famous creations, Rita Hayworth's strapless black satin Gilda dress and Marilyn Monroe's sheer, crystal-strewn "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" gown, became touchstones far beyond their films. Some of that reporting came courtesy of Kim Novak, who wrote the book's foreword . She gave a rare window into Jean Louis's process, including an anecdote about walking in on Marlene Dietrich mid-fitting for a soufflé-silk gown so sheer it required roughly 50 to 60 layers of fabric to stay decent.
