Today's episode features the magnetic Kelli Garner, an actress whose career took off at just 14 and never stopped surprising. A California native, Kelli made her film debut with Mike Mills before being selected by Martin Scorsese to play Hollywood ingénue Faith Domergue in The Aviator opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. From there came a whirlwind of back-to-back films and unforgettable performances in Lars and the Real Girl, Thumbsucker, and Man of the House. Kelli opens up about her wild early years in Hollywood, audacious audition stories (including one involving a Gatorade mustache), and the powerful lessons learned from both meteoric success and quiet withdrawal. She speaks candidly about mental health, her journey to regulate her nervous system, and the deeper sense of purpose that ultimately led her to embody Marilyn Monroe—a role she initially turned down twice. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Kelli Garner right here. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to playwright, author and educator Luke Yankee, son of Oscar-winning actress Eileen Heckart. Luke spoke to us about his biography about his mother, Just Outside the Spotlight, his then upcoming play about his mother and the many, many tales he witnessed growing up the son of his actor/mother who was anything but a wilting flower. Eileen was a pistol and o're to be the subject of one of her pointed barbs! We also talk about host Josh Mills' mother Edie Adams who Luke had a first person connection to as well as some of Luke's mother's best known films, The Bad Seed, Barefoot in the Park, Butterflies Are Free and more. Along with that comes great tales about Goldie Hawn, George Segal, Soupy Sales, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe and many more. While all of these amazing stories are told with a fun and mirth, there was one moment that genuinely choked us up in it's beautiful humanity that we just loved hearing. It was a pure and honest moment that gave us a truly well rounded picture of the complex woman that was Eileen Heckert. Broadway, the big screen and even a pivotal role on the small screen on The Mary Tyler Moore Show are all part of this episode with Luke Yankee. Everyone has a story.
But what exactly is a publicist? The word publicist carries a hint of intrigue. It takes us back to a time when this profession unfolded behind the scenes, long before the internet, social media, and influencer marketing. In fashion, beauty, or design, publicists---often called press agents---were key figures. They were recognized as true experts, and their role went far beyond sharing information. They shaped careers. They created events. And they knew how to captivate the media.Take Eleanor Lambert. She founded the Fashion Calendar. She invented... New York Fashion Week! Thanks to her, American designers like Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein gained international recognition.Lambert wasn't just a publicist---she was a visionary. In Hollywood, there was Lois Smith. She had a gift for turning an actress into an icon.Marilyn Monroe owed her a lot.Smith knew how to orchestrate public appearances, manage relationships with journalists, and build a story around a personality.Being a publicist back then meant having a precious contact book, an intimate knowledge of the industry, and above all, an unfailing instinct for storytelling.Their influence was built on trust, respect, and professional rigor.Today, the profession has evolved.PR agencies have taken over. They juggle journalists, influencers, social media, visual content, digital partnerships... and even paid advertising. Results are measured differently: reach, engagement, conversions.Yet despite these sophisticated tools, the essence of the job remains the same.Whether it's a journalist in the 1950s or a content creator today, strong stories, authentic narratives, and genuine human connections remain the key to building awareness for a product or personality. The word publicist is still widely searched online. And yesterday's publicists and today's agencies share one thing in common: lasting visibility is built on storytelling and human relationships. The very term publicist continues to fascinate. It evokes elegance, subtlety, and the boldness of those pioneers who turned communication into an art form.Their legacy lives on in every press release, every event, every strategy designed to bring a story to life.In the end, no matter the tools. No matter the era.Our profession remains the same: weaving stories, creating connections, and building visibility that lasts. This is what PR professionals continue to do today, still inspired by those who shaped the history of the craft.I'm also taking this opportunity to announce our next free workshop on the #1 PR tool: the press release.Reserve your spot even if you can't join us live. Doctor Max Jacobson, whom the Secret Service under President John F. Kennedy code-named “Dr. Feelgood,” developed a unique “energy formula” that altered the paths of some of the twentieth century's most iconic figures, including President and Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis. JFK received his first injection (a special mix of “vitamins and hormones,” according to Jacobson) just before his first debate with Vice President Richard Nixon. The shot into JFK's throat not only cured his laryngitis, but also diminished the pain in his back, allowed him to stand up straighter, and invigorated the tired candidate. Kennedy demolished Nixon in that first debate and turned a tide of skepticism about Kennedy into an audience that appreciated his energy and crispness. What JFK didn't know then was that the injections were actually powerful doses of a combination of highly addictive liquid methamphetamine and steroids.Author and researcher Rick Lertzman and New York Times bestselling author Bill Birnes reveal heretofore unpublished material about the mysterious Dr. Feelgood. Through well-researched prose and interviews with celebrities including George Clooney, Jerry Lewis, Yogi Berra, and Sid Caesar, the authors reveal Jacobson's vast influence on events such as the assassination of JFK, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Kennedy-Khrushchev Vienna Summit, the murder of Marilyn Monroe, the filming of the C. B. DeMille classic The Ten Commandments, and the work of many of the great artists of that era. Jacobson destroyed the lives of several famous patients in the entertainment industry and accidentally killed his own wife, Nina, with an overdose of his formula.https://amzn.to/4okPHoVBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “We have smoothly transitioned from one form of feminine subservience to another, but we pretend that this one is liberation.” “…Western sexual culture in the twenty-first century…promotes the interests of the Hugh Hefners of the world at the expense of the Marilyn Monroes.”~Louise Perry, British journalist in The Case Against the Sexual Revolution “For we were the purpose of [Christ's] embodiment, and for our salvation he so loved human beings as to come to be and appear in a human body.” “He became what we are so that he might make us what he is.”~Athanasius of Alexandria (c.296-373), On the Incarnation “The dignity of human nature, fashioned in the divine image, is such that God can take it for himself—and keep it.”~Nigel Cameron, bioethicist “[The] central doctrines of Christianity prompted and sustained attractive, liberating, and effective social relations and organizations…. [P]erhaps above all else, Christianity brought a new conception of humanity to a world saturated with capricious cruelty and the vicarious love of death…. [W]hat Christianity gave to its converts was nothing less than their humanity.”~Rodney Stark (1934-2022), Professor of Sociology and Comparative Religion “It is a serious thing…to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare…. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal…. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit….”~C.S. Lewis (1893-1963), The Weight of Glory “Christianity's success is to be found in its inclusiveness. More than any other of its [ancient] competitors it attracted all races and classes…. Christianity, too, was for both sexes…. The Church welcomed both rich and poor…. No other [religion]…took in so many groups and strata of society.”~Kenneth Scott Latourette (1884-1986), historian at Yale UniversitySERMON PASSAGEselected passages (ESV)Genesis 1 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Matthew 22 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.... 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” 1 Corinthians 6 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. Hebrews 2 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Send us a text(Had a great time on my road trip, got back – and I've been sick ever since. This year has been one endless struggle bus ride, and there's room for more, so hop on :)Materialists seems to be a polarizing movie that isn't quite a romcom, isn't quite a straight up romantic drama, while ending happily, making it one of the most interesting hybrid stories I've seen in a while. Dakota Johnson is incredible as Lucy, a smart but cynical matchmaker who treats her clients as commodities – and threatens to do the same with her ex-boyfriend until she realizes his love for her survived their terrible break up, and her honest admission that she's somewhat shallow when it comes to choosing romantic partners. When she finally decides to make a romantic choice that isn't based on statistics, shrewd calculations or dating math but what's in her heart, that's when her life turns around. And that's what makes this movie deeply romantic to me.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comI change my mind about this trailer – it captures the smart stylish vibe but not nearly all of the ups and downs in mood that make this such a fascinating film.Celine Song talked about her inspiration for writing and directing Materialists in a fascinating interview on BBC World Service.Gold Diggers of 1933 (full movie) is currently on YouTube! Oh and I forgot to mention – it stars a young Ginger Rogers too! The best hour and a half you will spend this week. The trailer for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes doesn't tell you much, but what's clear is this Technicolor 1950s movie about two show-stopping showgirls, one in it for love and the other mostly for the diamonds, is such a treat. How to Marry a Millionaire stars Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe as a stunning trio of broke but gorgeous roommates who we're supposed to believe have trouble landing super solvent guys who will love and dote on them.I love going down the rabbit hole of the related and gendered variations on the gold digger trope.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, please click share in your podcast app and tell your friends! This is the earliest Goon Show we've covered on the podcast so far - the second show of Series 4 and while not fully matured to the level of quality we've come to expect it is still a solid and amusing edition with both cast and audience on fine form. It begins with a short sketch about Handsome Harry trying to save an heiress from drowning in order to glom a large reward but the story proper begins following Max's number. London is gripped by terror as a madman is at large threatening to blow up notable landmarks. Seagoon is tasked with tracking him down and enlists help from the likes of Bloodnok, Eccles and Henry Crun - a bomb diviner. Bluebottle is easily confused by pins and we also meet William Gladstone... or is it Churchill? Roger Stevenson joins Tyler and along the way they discuss Eva Bartok, Anna Neagle, Edwardian Dynamite genre fiction, Mrs Dale's Diary, the Robin Hood radio panto, James Finlayson, Ray's A Laugh, Hermione Gingold, Marilyn Monroe... and there's a couple of rounds of "Is It Spike Or is It Peter?" for good measure. Anna Nicole Smith transcended the laws of celebrity. She was a blonde sexpot who was famous for being famous, and that was reason enough for pop culture. People around the world recognized her Marilyn Monroe-esque curves filled out Guess jeans, and her squeaky baby speaking voice on The Anna Nicole Show. In the early 2000s, the FBI investigated her regarding an alleged hit she organized to take out her 60-year-old “stepson.” But when Anna Nicole and her grown son Daniel died under eerily sudden — and similar — circumstances, people started to wonder if the feds were barking up the wrong bombshell. Michelle is back again and she and Jason are once again discussing the brilliant films of the great Billy Wilder. This time they discuss the films which feature Marilyn Monroe. There's no question that Some Like It Hot is one of the greatest comedies of all time, a delirious, delightful, dizzy masterpiece of sheer lunacy. In other words, Jason and Michelle liked it.They also look at The Seven Year Itch, which is also a fine movie but much more problematic and complicated for a contemporary viewer. Monroe's character is just called The Girl in the film, which only hints at the problematic aspects of this film which is also quite fun, clever and entertaining. We also think this pod is entertaining and hope you agree!
GGACP remembers the late, great television writer Ron Friedman (“The Odd Couple,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “All in the Family,” “Barney Miller”) by revisiting this return engagement from 2019. In this episode, Ron talks about the structure of storytelling, the importance of escapism, his years-long friendship with comics legend Stan Lee and the original inspirations for Captain Marvel and the Sub-Mariner. Also, Ron regales the boys with all-new stories about Lucille Ball, Lenny Bruce, Tony Randall, Danny Thomas and (of course) Pat McCormick. PLUS: Jack Benny takes a stand! Marilyn Monroe converts! Buster Crabbe teams with Chuck McCann! John Huston tangles with Errol Flynn! And Ron kills off a beloved fictional character! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Women in Dark Times (Fitzcarraldo) begins with three remarkable women: revolutionary socialist Rosa Luxemburg; German-Jewish painter Charlotte Salomon; and film icon Marilyn Monroe. The story of these women blazes a trail across some of the defining features of the twentieth century – revolution, totalitarianism and the American dream – and compels us to reckon with the unspeakable. Extending her argument into the present, Rose turns her focus to ‘honour' killings and celebrates contemporary artists whose work grows out of an unflinching engagement with all that is darkest in the modern world. Women in Dark Times, reissued a decade after its original publication, offers a template for a scandalous feminism, one which confronts all that is most recalcitrant and unsettling in the struggle to create a better world. Jacqueline Rose was in conversation about her work with Yasmin El-Rifae, co-producer of The Palestine Festival of Literature and author of Radius.

Matthew McConaughey vs. revolving doors, Jackie Chan's father living off dog food, and Joe DiMaggio's lifelong love for Marilyn Monroe might sound random, but they all lead to one of the biggest broken promises in U.S. History. After the Civil War, newly freed Black people were guaranteed 40 acres and a mule -- This episode of IDKMYDE dives into: what that promise meant, who snatched that guarantee away, and how its betrayal still echoes today.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Icons represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Myths are stories that represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Archetypes are symbols of recognizable patterns of behavior.Letters of the alphabet are symbols (graphemes) that represents sounds (phonemes,) just as notes on a sheet of music are symbols that represent sounds.A role model is a personal icon, an archetype that you have chosen to emulate. The human brain loves symbols and patterns. This is why we embrace icons, myths, and archetypes. When we recognize a pattern that has been stored in our subconscious, we call it intuition. When we hear a pattern that has been repeated too many times, we call it a predictable cliché.Icons, myths, and archetypes evolve with each new generation.I was born in the 12th year of the 18-year Baby Boom generation that began exactly 9 months and 10 minutes after the end of World War II.Marilyn Monroe was the iconic sex symbol. The Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium, Yellowstone, and Woodstock were America's iconic places. Rolls Royce, Cadillac, Corvette, Camaro and Mustang were iconic cars. Tetris, Pong, and Pac-Man were iconic video games. The mythic stories of Baby Boomers were mostly about combat. Sometimes we fought the Indians of the Old West. Sometimes we fought the Germans, or the Japanese. We fought the Establishment. We fought for justice. Or we fought just to stay alive. And we always won.Our definitive male archetype in these mythic stories was rugged, brave, independent, and honorable. John Wayne, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery.Baby Boomer female archetypes were smart, pretty, and strong; Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews, Sophia Loren.Lots of movies ended with a wedding. These societal forces shaped the birth cohort known as the Baby Boomers.Gen-X was shaped by an entirely different set of icons, myths, and archetypes.Millennials had icons, myths, and archetypes that were all their own, as well. The Gen-Z cohort believes it is their responsibility to straighten out everything that the Boomers and X-ers screwed up.Gen-Alpha is determined to make their own decisions and decide for themselves what they want to do. They will be the vanguard of the next “Me” generation.Fortunately, there are elemental beliefs that bind us all together. It is upon those beliefs that successful customer-bonding ad campaigns are built. Openly name these beliefs and they lose their magic. If you claim to possess them, no one will believe you.EXAMPLES: Never claim to be honest. Just say something that only an honest person would say. Never claim to be a perfectionist. Just do something that only a perfectionist would do. Don't tell people that you are an author or a podcaster. Just give them a copy of your book. Invite them to be on your podcast. If you would win the hearts and minds of tomorrow's customers, this is what you must do:Imagine that you are standing face-to-face with three perfect customers and they are each looking into your eyes. The first one says, “Talk is cheap. Don't tell me what you believe. Show me.”The second customer says, “Tell me a true story that lets me know who you really are, including the price that you pay for being you.”Customer three says, “If you betray me after I have given you my trust, I will burn you down so hot that grass won't grow for 100 years.”Now you understand cancel culture. Frustration created it, and social media fuels it.People are looking for someone who really is...

Send us a textRecord player in tow, bent on igniting a party for the suicidal Sparx at Good Sam's (Marilyn Monroe stayed here--it must be good), Wanda recalls the childhood picnic where her family's powerlessness to save a crash victim stole her appetite and, seemingly, her faith in the cosmos. Now she's hiding self-inflicted bald patches under a loaned head scarf (ugly enough to shock her devastated gay bestie awake), desperate to persuade him their lives will work out yet--but can she consume one more cafeteria meatball in the meantime? Hang onto your slipcases, because Blake Howard and author William "Bill" Boyle discuss the impact of the neorealist melodrama fusion of CAIRO STATION on us watching and on Bill's latest novel, SAINT OF THE NARROWS STREET. Cairo StationYoussef Chahine established his international reputation with this masterpiece, which, though initially a commercial failure in Egypt, would become one of the most influential and celebrated works in all of Arab cinema. The director himself stars as Kenawi, a disabled newspaper hawker whose obsession with a sultry drink seller (Hind Rostom, known as the “Marilyn Monroe of Arabia”) leads to tragedy of operatic proportions on the streets of Cairo. Blending elements of neorealism with provocative noir-melodrama, Cairo Station is a work of raw populist poetry that explores the individual's search for a place in Egypt's new postrevolutionary political order.BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrackNew 2K digital restoration of Cairo as Seen by Chahine (1991), a short documentary by Youssef Chahine, with an introduction by film scholar Joseph FahimNew interview with FahimChahine . . . On March 28th, 1979, the United States came terrifyingly close to a full-scale nuclear catastrophe. The Three Mile Island meltdown in Pennsylvania was supposed to be “contained,” with officials insisting that no serious harm was done. That's the story we were told. But behind the official narrative lies a trail of cancer clusters, silenced victims, and a government desperate to bury the truth. In this episode, I sit down with a whistleblower who lived through it all, and her testimony paints a far darker picture than anything admitted to the public. - SUBSCRIBE TO "THE CONSPIRACY FILES" on YouTube!: https://www.youtube.com/@UCsYWvjBZc6nhVspRKh9BppQ - LISTEN TO "THE CONSPIRACY FILES" WHEREVER YOU GET YOUR PODCASTS!: -Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5IY9nWD2MYDzlSYP48nRPl -Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-conspiracy-files/id1752719844 -Amazon/Audible - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ab1ade99-740c-46ae-8028-b2cf41eabf58/the-conspiracy-files -Pandora - https://www.pandora.com/podcast/the-conspiracy-files/PC:1001089101 -iHeart - https://iheart.com/podcast/186907423/ -PocketCast - https://pca.st/dpdyrcca -CastBox - https://castbox.fm/channel/id6193084?country=us - "THE CONSPIRACY FILES" is the most DANGEROUS show on the internet. Recorded: July 28th 2025 | This week on Bussin’ With The Boys, Will Compton and Taylor Lewan have on the legendary Theo Von! From deep thoughts to deep woods, Theo takes us on a ride through his fasting-fueled introspections, sketch comedy chaos, and SEC football hot takes. We kick things off with a fun intro discussing Dieon Sanders news, and the upcoming Bussin’ Bowl Live Show. After our electric intro, the Theo interview kicks off starting with Theo sharing about his current fast… yeah, he’s starving, but it’s got him thinking deep. He opens up about how not eating for days makes his mind sharper and his soul weirder, and how it’s even made him re-evaluate his dream guests on This Past Weekend. He hopes to have an episode with The Pope and Marilyn Monroe. Theo also drops a bombshell: he was approached to be in Adam Sandler’s ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ on Netflix but had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts. The boys chop it up about Theo’s long-time friendship with Bobby Lee and the success of his True Friends podcast. He reflects on the early years of grinding in LA, podcasting before it was cool, and what it was like trying to find his voice while bouncing off other now-huge comics. The boys also talk about Theo’s viral “Digger” sketch with Shane Gillis and Druski, breaking down the behind-the-scenes chaos and what it’s like working with comedy heavyweights. Then things get outdoorsy as Theo talks about his fun camping trip with none other than Glenny Balls and the owner of Jimmy John’s Sandwiches. We even get a heartfelt moment as Theo opens up about his friendship with UFC star Dustin Poirier, sharing some behind-the-scenes stories and what it means to know a guy who's still as real as they come. And of course, it wouldn’t be a Bussin’ episode without some football talk. Theo, Will, and Taylor break down their bold predictions for the upcoming SEC season, roasting a few teams along the way and throwing out some sleeper picks you probably didn’t see coming. 0:00 Intro3:23 Bussin Bowl Live Show11:26 Taylor’s Bday Present16:31 Will’s Trip To Canada30:56 Madden 99 Club45:23 Lewan BBQ Party58:49 Happy Gilmore 2 Was A Hit1:11:26 Deion Sanders Health Issues1:18:51 NFLPA Drama 1:29:07 THEO VON INTERVIEW STARTS 1:29:09 The F Word Has Become More Popular1:31:23 Theo Lost His Smile1:33:11 Growing Up In Louisiana 1:34:57 Does He Feel That He Always NeedsTo Be Funny?1:37:05 This Past Weekend Podcast1:50:27 White Whale Guests1:54:51 The Diggers Movie?2:01:23 Glenny Balls & Theo Went Camping 2:10:01 Huge SEC Fan2:14:41 His Relationship With Bobby Lee And Andrew Santino2:18:09 Happy Gilmore 2 Approached Him?2:23:11 Vanderbilt & Diego Pavia Expectations2:34:50 Fear In Leaving Barstool?2:41:05 Those Who Suffer Before Necessary Suffer More Than Necessary 2:46:59 Breaking Away From Kast Media2:55:11 Going Early To UFC Fights3:04:26 Bud Light: What Would You Do Anything For?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
