Dès l'entrée de l'exposition « Gianni Versace : Rétrospective » au musée Maillol, les créations exubérantes du couturier, disparu en 1997, s'imposent. Couleurs vives, motifs kitsch, sequins, drapés, soieries, broderies, le tout concentré parfois sur la même silhouette : à l'heure du « less is more », les vêtements dessinés par Gianni Versace rappellent que, parfois, « more is more », tout simplement. 450 pièces réunies au même endroit  Pour mettre en valeur les 450 pièces - vêtements, chaussures, bijoux, accessoires de décoration - réunies par les commissaires auprès de différents collectionneurs, le musée Maillol s'est transformé en véritable catwalk. Le visiteur circule donc d'espace en espace, comme au centre d'un gigantesque défilé de mode. Un dispositif ambitieux et extravagant, conforme, d'une certaine manière, aux goûts de Gianni Versace. « Avec lui, tout devait toujours être fait à 100 %, voire à 1000 % ! » se souvient Doris Brugger. L'ancienne attachée de presse et amie du créateur a prêté une vingtaine de pièces de sa collection pour les besoins de l'exposition. Dans cette profusion de silhouettes - une infime partie des 6 à 8.000 tenues conçues par Gianni Versace -, difficile de choisir. Pourtant, certaines restent emblématiques : « la collection Barocco est l'une des plus importantes exposées ici, estime Doris Brugger. Il y a aussi toutes les pièces avec les épingles à nourrice, la veste en cuir avec les croix et les étoiles brodées dessus... et, bien sûr, la robe avec le visage de Marilyn Monroe ! »  Parmi les espaces à ne pas manquer également : la collection de chemises en soie à motifs extravagants. Gianni Versace en a dessiné plusieurs centaines au cours de sa carrière, reconnaissables entre toutes. « Porter une telle chemise, c'était s'affirmer en tant que "Versacista", s'amuse Karl von der Ahé, l'un des deux commissaires de l'exposition. Cela a fait partie des points forts de sa mode, et c'était important pour lui. » Force est de constater que, malgré leurs 40 ans, certaines pièces exposées n'ont pas pris une ride ni perdu de leur éclat.  La mode-spectacle  Visionnaire, Gianni Versace l'a été aussi lorsqu'il a compris l'importance de l'image et du divertissement. L'exposition raconte ainsi les premières collections où le couturier a fait défiler les mannequins les plus célèbres de l'époque - Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell... et le virage pris par Gianni Versace lorsqu'il est devenu le visage de sa propre marque. « Gianni ne s'entourait que des meilleurs photographes, et était régulièrement pris en photo pour des séries de portraits, raconte Saskia Lubnow, elle aussi commissaire de l'exposition. Cela lui permettait de maîtriser son image et le récit autour de sa marque. »  Et Karl von der Ahé d'abonder : « Gianni Versace a fait de la mode un spectacle, et en faisant cela, il a modernisé la haute couture. Sa tragédie, c'est qu'avec cette stratégie de marketing agressif, il a scié la branche sur laquelle il était assis. Lorsqu'on se concentre sur la célébrité, sur les visages, alors on ne parle plus de mode ». Près de 30 ans après l'assassinat du couturier devant sa maison de Floride, difficile de lui donner tort : Gianni Versace disparu, la marque est progressivement tombée en désuétude. Reste l'exposition « Gianni Versace : Rétrospective » pour offrir un dernier tour de piste à des silhouettes toujours aussi extraordinaires.  « Gianni Versace : Rétrospective », au musée Maillol à Paris, du 6 juin au 6 septembre 2026. 

Des poissons électriques, guitare en bandoulière, montent la garde sous les pins de l'ile de Porquerolles à Hyères dans le Var. Grandeur nature, plantés là par l'artiste kényane Cosima Von Bonin, ils accueillent le visiteur jusqu'à la Villa Carmignac, sorte de comité d'accueil rock'n'roll pour une exposition qui n'a pas franchement l'intention de rester sage. Derrière ces sculptures déjantées, Kévin Le Squer, responsable des expositions, décode : « Cosima Von Bonin détourne l'imagerie publicitaire des poissonneries pour mieux interroger, sous ses airs potaches, notre rapport aux océans ». Le ton est donné. Pas de protocole guindé pour « Sea, Pop & Sun ». À l'entrée de la fondation Carmignac, on retire ses chaussures, on empoche un verre, et on file visiter l'art comme on traînerait chez des amis un dimanche d'été. Charles Carmignac, le directeur des lieux, assume la filiation : « Mon père Édouard Carmignac a fréquenté la Factory de Warhol dans le New York des années 1960-1970. Cette exposition tente de restituer, plus qu'une époque, une sensation,  celle d'une liberté qu'on pouvait presque toucher ». Un Summer of Love version Méditerranée Le pop art, ce n'est pas que des produits de consommation de masse et des pin-up. C'est aussi une lumière, une énergie, un souffle contestataire. La fondation a choisi ce versant-là, celui du Summer of Love américain, mais aussi celui de mai 1968, version française sur une île où le soleil tape et où la mer n'est jamais loin, l'équation coule de source : riviera, vacances, insouciance affichée. À l'intérieur de chaque salle, les tubes prennent le relais d'Otis Redding aux Beach Boys. « Surfing in the USA » ouvre sur un espace saturé de couleurs avec un surfeur hyperréaliste de Duane Hanson, une langouste géante de Jeff Koons ou encore les plages kitsch de Martin Parr. L'imagerie populaire dans toute sa splendeur car l'idée n'est pas de faire circuler le visiteur en silence devant des cimaises, mais de lui donner, par moments, l'envie de bouger. Sur les quatre-vingts œuvres réunies, beaucoup sortent rarement des réserves. Roy Lichtenstein propose un lever de soleil version vitrail. Warhol, lui, surprend : pas de boites de conserve ni de  Marilyn Monroe  ici, mais des couchers de soleil sérigraphiés, quatre pièces extraites d'une série de six cent trente-deux, conçue à l'origine pour un hôtel. Une demi-sphère, des nuances brumeuses, jamais deux fois les mêmes, chaque combinaison de couleurs devait, selon l'artiste, produire une émotion différente chez qui la regardait. Respect, et corps noirs libérés Changement de registre dans une salle rythmée par « Respect » d'Aretha Franklin ou des artistes femmes y reprennent la main sur la représentation du corps noir féminin. Des figures voluptueuses, alanguies, oisives, rêveuses plutôt que la femme qui travaille et souffre, motif rarissime dans l'histoire de l'art occidental. Montrer ces peintures la fondation Carmignac, n'a rien d'anodin, c'est un geste politique autant qu'esthétique. Tout du long de l'exposition, le pop art made in USA discute avec les avant-gardes européennes. Et au milieu de ce joyeux bazar coloré trône le château de sable géant de Théo Mercier, monument éphémère qui rappelle la fragilité écologique de nos décors de carte postale. Kévin Le Squer résume : « c'est une exposition solaire, dansante, pop jusqu'au bout des ongles mais qui, sous ses couleurs franches, laisse filtrer quelques murmures plus sombres sur la liberté et la fragilité de notre monde ».

On today's show, host Ali Muldrow is in conversation with Sophie Lewis about her new book, Femmephilia: Love Letters to Trans Mermaids, Queer Mothers, and Marilyn Monroe. Lewis describes her journey from being a “queer runaway” child to a professional writer as an adult. Her writing confronts the white, bourgeois feminist worldview and advocates for a radical embrace of “femme” and a future with abundance for all. In Femmephilia, Lewis challenges readers to take femme seriously because there's still a confusion about what femininity means, for anti-feminists and feminists alike. Lewis distinguishes femme from femininity, calling the former a verb and a practice in the service of anti-oppression and anti-fascism. In theorizing femme, Lewis unpacks class and capitalism, rape culture, racial supremacy, and coloniality. Lewis says we shouldn't turn away from “girly” things because in them we can find joy, pleasure, and excess.  They also discuss the invisibilized labor of care work, the ideology of the nuclear family, and Hilary Clinton and Kamala Harris's unsuccessful presidential bids. Lewis wants us to move away from anti-utopian compromise and believe that we can have bread and roses and hormones too.  Sophie Lewis is a self-described ex-academic and feminist writer living in Philadelphia. She is the author of Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family, Abolish the Family: A Manifesto for Care and Liberation, Enemy Feminisms, and finally Femmephilia, an essay collection which just came out a few weeks ago. The castle carries the story of Irma, the piano-playing ghost said to have died in 1932 and returned to the mansion built in 1909 by Rollin B. Lane, along with the ghost of magician Dai Vernon near his favorite seat in the Palace of Prestidigitation, the unidentified girl in the Haunted Cellar, and a Halloween 2011 fire that started at the exact time of Houdini's 1926 death and gutted the Dante Room while sparing the Houdini Room.From there the episode checks into the haunted hotels of Los Angeles, beginning with the Knickerbocker, which opened in Hollywood in July of 1929, hosted Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio on their honeymoon, and staged Bess Houdini's tenth and final rooftop séance the night an isolated thunderstorm struck the building alone. It moves through the Ambassador on Wilshire Boulevard, where Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down by Sirhan Sirhan in the kitchen on June 4, 1968, the Rosslyn Annex with its forgotten Prohibition speakeasy, the Alexandria and its bricked-off phantom wing, the Biltmore where Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, was last seen before her 1947 murder, and the Cecil Hotel, home to serial killers Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger and the site where guest Elisa Lam was found dead in the rooftop water tank in 2013 after guests complained the water tasted strange.Next the episode traces L.A.'s long history of the occult, running from Scientology founder L. Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 7-02-2026: Dr. Dawn devotes the first half of the show to a nuanced defense of GLP-1 receptor agonists, arguing the polarized debate treats obesity as a moral failure rather than a physiological one. She recounts the "Marilyn Monroe dress" moment that transformed semaglutide from diabetes drug into elite cosmetic tool, and pushes back on the puritanical framing that behavior change must be earned rather than pharmacologically enabled—noting we don't apply this logic to antihypertensives or statins. Dr. Dawn catalogs visceral fat as a genuine endocrine organ producing over 17 hormones, most of which drive self-perpetuating growth: leptin (this satiety hormone at high levels disables it's own brain receptor), IL-6, TNF-alpha (blocks insulin), resistin (increases insulin resistance and inflammation), PAI-2 (blocks clot breakdown, raising cardiovascular risk), retinol-binding protein 4 (impairs muscle glucose uptake), chemerin (recruits macrophages and directs fat to the belly), and visfatin. Only adiponectin declines with rising visceral fat. It improves insulin sensitivity, suppresses hepatic gluconeogenesis, and blocks IL-6 . Dr. Dawn describes GLP-1's neurobiological action: receptors in the hypothalamus, brainstem, hippocampus, and mesolimbic reward system, with the drugs quieting the brain's salience network so food loses its intrusive pull. Taste buds shift, sweet and salty become muted, and reward circuits stop firing on cheat foods—creating a window during which behavioral change becomes possible. Dr. Dawn frames group support through self-determination theory (autonomy, competence, relatedness), arguing GLP-1s create the cognitive bandwidth for behavioral programs to succeed. A Tufts study of patients discontinuing after 10% weight loss found those enrolled in behavioral support programs regained about three times less weight than usual-care controls, outperforming even medically-tailored meal plans. A burglar hiding in the closet of an elderly woman's house watches a ghostly old man pat a departing paramedic on the back, then feels breath on the neck and a voice ordering the intruder out. Middle-schoolers creeping through their darkened school are warned off by a voice none of them claims, and they avoid a library that proved to be wired with a silent alarm and motion detectors. In California, a fourteen-year-old abandons a car-theft job a mile from the pickup, spooked by a rising sense of dread, and later learns the vehicle was bait in a police sting that swept up everyone else sent after it. A pickpocket lifts a wallet clean off a stranger, only for the man — blind, sunglasses raised — to calmly ask for it back. Threaded among them are a blown tire that derails a despairing teenager's suicide plan, church doors that lock the instant two thieves reach for them, and a Hobby Lobby shopper whose five stolen pieces of balsa wood seem to trail straight to a table saw and a flesh-eating MRSA infection.From there the episode turns to a listener named Atreada, who shared a room and a bed with her older sister in SunRay, Texas. For a week the bed shook hard enough to slam against the wall and wake the whole house, blamed each night on two children supposedly roughhousing. On the fourth night a hand rose from the gap between bed and wall as an evil laugh filled the room, and on the last night the sisters aimed a flashlight and saw the thing climb out and bolt — an old man in rags, barefoot, with glowing eyes, talon-like fingers, broken teeth, ears jutting at odd angles, and thin transparent strands hanging from an otherwise bald, corpse-like head.Next comes the true story behind Spring Valley County Park in York County, Pennsylvania, a place once called Hex Hollow. In 1928 a Powwow folk-magic practitioner named John Blymire became convinced he was cursed, and a witch called Nellie Noll — the Marietta River Witch — named Nelson Rehmeyer as the source. To break the hex, Blymire needed a lock of Rehmeyer's hair and his copy of The Long Lost Friend, an 1820 spellbook by John George Hohman. On November 26, 1928, Blymire and two accomplices, John Curry and Wilbert Hess, beat Rehmeyer to death in his home and tried to burn it down; the house refused to burn, which locals took as proof of his power. Blymire and Curry drew life sentences and Hess ten to twenty years, and the surviving hex house opened as a museum in 2007 — its story helping to inspire horror novelist Brian Keene and Shane Free's 2015 documentary on the killing.The episode closes with the death of Marilyn Monroe, found nude and lifeless in her Brentwood home in the early hours of August 5, 1962, a telephone in her hand and empty pill bottles on the nightstand. The official verdict was probable suicide by barbiturate overdose, but Sergeant Jack Clemmons, the first officer on the scene, found no glass or water for swallowing some sixty pills, no vomit, and housekeeper Eunice Murray running laundry while the body lay cooling. Thomas Noguchi's autopsy turned up lethal levels of Nembutal and chloral hydrate in her blood and liver, yet not a trace in her stomach. Witnesses placed Attorney General Robert Kennedy at the house that day and again near 10 p.m., tied to rumors of a red diary detailing her affairs with Robert and President John F. Kennedy and referencing a plot against Castro. A competing account, advanced years later by a Court TV investigation, holds that her psychiatrist Ralph Greenson gave her a chloral hydrate enema to wean her off Nembutal, unaware that her internist Hyman Engelberg was still prescribing it, and that the fatal drug interaction — not the Kennedys, and not her own hand — is what killed her.
