House Republicans are trying to push President Donald Trump's massive tax and immigration bill across the finish line this week, hoping to conquer internal divisions and tee up a vote that would send the bill to the Senate. One of the areas targeted for major cuts is Medicaid, which insures more than 80 million people in the United States. To root out what they say is waste, fraud and abuse in the system, and preserve the program long term, conservatives have proposed reductions and changes to Medicaid eligibility.Today on “Post Reports,” Elahe Izadi speaks with health reporter Fenit Nirappil about the United States' largest public health insurance program: What it is, how it works, whom it serves and what could change.Today's show was produced by Elana Gordon and Rennie Svirnovskiy. Send us a textThe walls we build to protect ourselves from trauma can become our prisons. This powerful truth emerges as Dr. Charlie Powell returns to share groundbreaking developments with his "Healing Heroes: No Mind Left Behind" documentary, now evolving from a television series into a theatrical release scheduled for November 11th.Charlie takes us deep into the intricate relationship between PTSD and addiction, revealing how these conditions often share the same root causes. "Most cases of PTSD don't start in adulthood," he explains, sharing his personal revelation that despite decades in military service and trauma medicine, some of his most significant healing came from addressing a childhood near-drowning experience. This perspective shatters conventional understanding of trauma, suggesting that many of our adult struggles trace back to moments where life came at us "too fast, too much, and too soon."The conversation ventures into uncomfortable but vital territory as Charlie and Steve discuss how trauma survivors' silence impacts relationships. "The silence that you put your partner through," Steve notes, "may not seem like verbal abuse or trauma, but it is." Charlie takes this further with a provocative comparison: this withdrawal can be as damaging as infidelity, representing a loss of faith in the partner's ability to handle the truth of your experience. Most powerfully, Charlie shares his initial reluctance and eventual decision to make his personal story central to the documentary. "People think vulnerability is a weakness. It's not. It's a strength," he explains, challenging the stigma that keeps many first responders and veterans from seeking help. This vulnerability has already resonated deeply—the documentary's first trailer garnered an astounding 4 million views in just three and a half days. For anyone struggling with trauma's grip, this conversation offers not just insight but tangible hope. Charlie describes how interventions combining multiple healing modalities helped six veterans and first responders achieve transformative recovery in just ten days—freedom from both PTSD symptoms and associated addictions many had developed to cope. As Charlie puts it: "Challenge anybody out there—imagine the biggest accomplishments you've ever had in life and tell me which one was easy." Perhaps our greatest traumas, properly processed, can lead to our greatest growth.Ready to see trauma recovery differently? Today's Headlines: Congress is currently hashing out a sweeping reconciliation bill—dubbed by President Trump as “one big beautiful bill”—that outlines his administration's tax and spending priorities, though its final form remains uncertain. Key provisions include extending the 2017 tax cuts, which would add an estimated $2.7 trillion to the national deficit by 2034, ramping up ICE funding, and introducing Medicaid work requirements. Trump visited Capitol Hill to rally support amid internal GOP resistance, as Speaker Mike Johnson aims to pass the bill before Memorial Day recess. As part of this package, Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a $25 billion down payment for a proposed $175 billion missile defense system called the “Golden Dome,” modeled on Israel's Iron Dome and intended to guard against nuclear and hypersonic threats. Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem sparked backlash after incorrectly defining habeas corpus during Senate testimony, raising alarms as the White House reportedly considers suspending the constitutional protection. On the economic front, mortgage rates have surged past 7%—a 25-year high—following a U.S. credit downgrade by Moody's. And in tech-meets-politics news, Elon Musk told the Qatar Economic Forum he plans to scale back political donations, though quickly added he might resume them if he sees a reason—fueling speculation his political capital may be waning. Yet, Native veterans also face some of the highest suicide rates, often twice the national average. Factors like historical trauma, limited access to culturally relevant care, and the lingering effects of service contribute to this crisis. For younger Native male veterans, the risk is especially high, making culturally rooted, community-based support critical. Programs that reconnect veterans to nature, culture, and tradition are helping restore hope. Since the start of his second term, President Trump has championed his vision for "One Big, Beautiful Bill" — a comprehensive piece of legislation that would include tax reforms, immigration enforcement, defense spending, while cutting what he describes as “waste, fraud and abuse” in social programs like Medicaid and SNAP. With just two days left before the initial deadline to get the bill to his desk, President Trump stepped up the pressure — paying Capitol Hill a visit on Tuesday morning to give House Republicans a "pep talk" in a last push for compromise before Memorial Day. Meanwhile, outside of Washington, Democrats in former President Biden's inner circle are continuing to reveal what they knew, or didn't know, about the former President's health and competency. However, talk about these narratives took a new turn over the weekend, after President Biden announced he's been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. To break it all down, FOX News Contributor Katie Pavlich, FOX News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram, and former Biden-Harris campaign surrogate Kevin Walling join Bret on this week's All-Star Panel. We tend to gloss over the intention behind Memorial Day each year as we prep for a long weekend full of good food, games, and time at the beach. But to be clear: We wouldn't be able to enjoy any of those things without others' sacrifices. To keep this truth top of mind as we approach the holiday weekend, Darlene Brock and Julie Bender walk through the history of the national holiday and share the startling numbers of those lost in recent wars. There is a depth and gravity to the topic that's worthy of honor and remembrance, including the first recorded Memorial Day celebration in which former slaves from Charleston, South Carolina, gathered to honor the Union soldiers lost during the war in 1865. If you've felt removed from the reason for Memorial Day, we urge you to take a listen to this short but meaningful podcast episode. Quote of the episode: “We should honor and remember the sacrifice of those who have [answered the call to go off and fight a war], and even immensely more those who have given their lives on the battlefield.”—Julie Bender Resources Related Learn more about how the Wounded Warrior Project honor and supports veterans Mentioned Read more about the first recorded Memorial Day celebration here Check out the Smart Living book series here! Hey everyone, it's Levi McCurdy back in your ears for Episode 189 of the What Are We Doing Podcast. Before we dive in, you know the drill: if you haven't already, hit that like button, subscribe, and ring the bell so you never miss one of my signature helium-adjacent vocal flubs. Gold stars await the committed few, and who knows—rack up enough stars and you might unlock some super-secret, definitely-maybe prize. What are we doing?I'm kicking things off with a dilemma: some of you think I'm the funniest person alive, while others insist I give off “weird tweaker vibes.” So I'm putting it to a vote: are you laughing or cringing? Head to the comments, pick a side, and help me settle this bipolar roller coaster once and for all. Stand-up tour or rooftop plunge—your call!Next, I recount my epic ant saga: the cinnamon-vinegar barrier that failed, the borax liquid traps that supposedly worked… until they were mysteriously emptied overnight. Was it an ant rescue squad hauling off their fallen comrades for a proper ant burial? A clandestine spider cleanup crew? Or did I hallucinate 30 tiny corpses after taco night? ChatGPT laid out the straightforward “ants carry the bait home” explanation, but where's the fun in that? Join me as we dissect the “ant extraction team” conspiracy theory. From tiny invaders to the biggest diva, former President Trump is back on social media, roasting Bruce Springsteen in England and claiming responsibility for Taylor Swift's “decline” after he tweeted “I hate Taylor Swift.” We unpack his bizarre pivot from musician-bashing to presidential-level clapbacks, and wonder: should world leaders really be ghostwriting their Twitter invective? Our boy Breezy is in a bit of a pickle across the pond—denied bail until June 13th for allegedly bashing a bottle in a London club. What does that mean for his Hershey tour dates? We lament the lost twerk sessions and speculate whether “Free Chris Brown” merch could be the next big festival fad.Airbnb's scrambling to stay relevant by selling “Services” (think in-house chefs and yoga instructors) and “Experiences” that range from the charming (ghost tours) to the downright unsettling. Yes, I'm looking at you, “Get a Taste of Sabrina Carpenter” and “Anime Schoolgirl Twerk-Off with Megan Thee Stallion.” We fantasize about the security detail these celebs will need when they open the door to their creepiest fan ever. What are we doing? Finally, TMZ breaks the news: Justin Bieber, once a billionaire-in-waiting, is reportedly so tapped out he's borrowing his pastor pal's credit card just to hit the links. We trace the meltdown—from canceled world tours and massive tour-advance buybacks, to a $200 million catalog sale—and pitch the ultimate solution: a multi-million-dollar Las Vegas Sphere residency to solve Bieber's money woes in ten nights flat. That's a wrap on the chaos for Episode 189. Thanks for sticking with my scattered thoughts, conspiracy theories, and late-night rants. If you've enjoyed the ride, drop a comment on whether I'm “hilarious” or “unfunny,” smash those buttons, and share this episode far and wide. We'll reconvene next week—might be Friday, might be Memorial Day—and who knows what ridiculousness we'll uncover then. Until next time, peace out and seriously, what are we doing?

Honoring Sacrifice: Veterans Reflect on Their Service and the Meaning of Memorial Day.  This poignant discussion on Memorial Day with two distinguished Vietnam War veterans, Vincent (U.S. Navy) and Steve (U.S. Air Force). They share their personal enlistment stories, experiences in Vietnam, and the profound significance of Memorial Day. Vincent and Steve reflect on the sacrifices of fallen comrades, the importance of educating younger generations about patriotism, and the camaraderie that helped them through tough times. The episode underscores the need to honor and remember those who served, particularly through community events like the Grayslake Memorial Day Parade. Honoring the Sacrifice: A Deep Dive into Memorial Day with Vietnam Veterans In this special episode of "Discovering Grayslake," we delve into the profound significance of Memorial Day through the eyes of two distinguished Vietnam War veterans, Vincent Mark Taranto and Steve MacInnis. Hosted by Speaker 1, this episode offers a heartfelt exploration of the personal experiences, reflections, and insights of these veterans, shedding light on the true meaning of Memorial Day.  Understanding Memorial Day: More Than Just a Day Off The True Meaning of Memorial Day Speaker 1 opens the discussion by emphasizing that Memorial Day is not just a day for barbecues and leisure but a solemn occasion to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Vincent Mark Taranto (Speaker 2) underscores this by highlighting the importance of educating others about the distinction between Memorial Day and other patriotic holidays like Independence Day. He stresses that saying "Happy Memorial Day" misses the point, as the day is meant to honor those who are no longer with us. Personal Reflections on Service and Sacrifice Vincent shares his poignant experiences from his time in Vietnam, reflecting on the young lives lost during the war. He recalls the emotional weight of seeing caskets draped in flags and the impact of losing friends in combat. One particularly moving story involves his college roommate, Michael D. Oliver, a lance corporal in the Marine Corps, whose obituary he heard on the Armed Forces Radio. This moment prompted him to pay tribute to Michael during a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, capturing a powerful photograph pointing at Michael's name on the wall. Steve MacInnis (Speaker 3) adds to this by sharing his own experiences of returning home from Vietnam and the lack of support and understanding from society. He describes how he and other veterans were met with hostility and indifference, leading to feelings of isolation and frustration. The Journey to Enlistment: Different Paths, Same Destination Vincent's Story Vincent recounts his decision to enlist in the U.S. Navy after realizing he would likely be drafted. He chose the Navy based on the uniforms and enlisted on November 17, 1965, going active in January 1966. His journey took him to various locations, including the Philippines and Danang, where he worked with the Marines and experienced the intense atmosphere of a combat zone. Steve's Story Steve's path to enlistment was different. After a year at Oregon State University, he decided to enlist in the Air Force to avoid being drafted into the Army. Despite trying to avoid the physical exam, he ended up passing and joined the Air Force, eventually serving in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. His entry into Vietnam was marked by a sobering realization as he witnessed the return of bodies from the war, a stark reminder of the reality of combat. Camaraderie and Humor: Coping Mechanisms in Difficult Times Building Bonds Both veterans emphasize the importance of camaraderie in coping with the challenges of military service. Steve recalls playing softball after shifts and engaging in social activities to unwind and support each other. Vincent agrees, highlighting how they looked out for one another regardless of their backgrounds, forming strong bonds that helped them through tough times. Moments of Humor Humor also played a crucial role in maintaining morale. The veterans share anecdotes of light-hearted moments that provided much-needed relief from the stress of combat. These moments of levity were essential in fostering a sense of unity and resilience among the troops. Honoring the Fallen: Personal Tributes and Community Involvement Remembering Friends Both veterans share stories of specific individuals they honor on Memorial Day. Vincent remembers his close friend, James Edward Hays, a chopper pilot who lost his life in Vietnam. He recalls the profound honor of being a pallbearer at James's funeral. Steve reflects on the importance of remembering those who served bravely and the impact they had on their lives. Community Events The discussion highlights the significance of community events in honoring the fallen. The Grayslake Memorial Day Parade is mentioned as a key event that brings the community together to pay tribute to veterans. Zoe (Speaker 4) describes how the parade culminates in a ceremony at Memorial Park, where the names of local veterans who lost their lives are read aloud, serving as a poignant reminder of their sacrifices. Educating Future Generations: Instilling Patriotism and Respect The Role of Veterans Both Vincent and Steve emphasize the importance of educating younger generations about the values of patriotism and service. Vincent shares his experiences speaking to youth about the realities of military service, urging them to appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans throughout history. Steve highlights the need for veterans to share their stories to provide a more accurate understanding of what Memorial Day represents. Engaging the Community The veterans encourage listeners to participate in local events, such as parades and memorial services, to honor fallen soldiers. They also suggest simple acts of kindness, such as displaying flags and memorials in their yards, to remind the community of the sacrifices made by veterans. Conclusion: A Message of Hope and Resilience As the episode draws to a close, the host thanks the veterans for their service and encourages listeners to engage in acts of kindness, particularly towards veterans. He challenges everyone to show appreciation for those who have served, whether through a simple thank you or by participating in community events that honor their sacrifices. This episode of "Discovering Grayslake" serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of Memorial Day and the need to honor the sacrifices of veterans. Through their personal stories, Vincent and Steve shed light on the challenges faced by veterans and the need for society to recognize and support them. By educating future generations and participating in community events, we can ensure that the memories of fallen soldiers are kept alive and inspire pride in our nation.

This week on The Hamilton Review Podcast, we are remembering Memorial Day with a special episode. We are happy to welcome former US Army intelligence specialist and author Kayla Williams to the show. Kayla shares the details of her moving story in the book she penned, "Plenty of Time When We Get Home: Love & Recovery in the Aftermath of War." Brian, on his way back to base after mid-tour leave, was wounded by a roadside bomb that sent shrapnel through his brain. Kayla waited anxiously for news and, on returning home, sought out Brian. The two began a tentative romance and later married, but neither anticipated the consequences of Brian's injury on their lives. Lacking essential support for returning veterans from the military and the VA, Kayla and Brian suffered through posttraumatic stress amplified by his violent mood swings, her struggles to reintegrate into a country still oblivious to women veterans, and what seemed the callous, consumerist indifference of civilian society at large. You will not want to miss this incredible conversation.
