Feminism's Empire (Cornell UP, 2022) investigates the complex relationships between imperialisms and feminisms in the late nineteenth century and demonstrates the challenge of conceptualizing "pro-imperialist" and "anti-imperialist" as binary positions. By intellectually and spatially tracing the era's first French feminists' engagement with empire, Carolyn J. Eichner explores how feminists opposed—yet employed—approaches to empire in writing, speaking, and publishing. In differing ways, they ultimately tied forms of imperialism to gender liberation. Among the era's first anti-imperialists, French feminists were enmeshed in the hierarchies and epistemologies of empire. They likened their gender-based marginalization to imperialist oppressions. Imperialism and colonialism's gendered and sexualized racial hierarchies established categories of inclusion and exclusion that rested in both universalism and ideas of "nature" that presented colonized people with theoretical, yet impossible, paths to integration. Feminists faced similar barriers to full incorporation due to the gendered contradictions inherent in universalism. The system presumed citizenship to be male and thus positioned women as outsiders. Feminism's Empire connects this critical struggle to hierarchical power shifts in racial and national status that created uneasy linkages between French feminists and imperial authorities. Dr. Carolyn J. Eichner about is a Professor of History and Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Feminism's Empire is her third book. Surmounting the Barricades: Women in the Paris Commune came out in 2004 and The Paris Commune: A Brief History came out in 2022. Surmounting the Barricades: Women in the Paris Commune was published in French as Franchir les barricades: les femmes dans la Commune de Paris (Éditions de la Sorbonne, 2020). FLOPPY DAYS 157 - Interview with David Kay, KayPro - Part 1 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FloppyDays Sponsors: 8-Bit Classics  Arcade Shopper and https://thekeep.net  FutureVision Research  Tuc's Workbench  Hello, and welcome to episode 157 of the Floppy Days Podcast for November, 2025.  I am Randy Kindig, your host. We are currently covering computers introduced in the year 1982 and, to that end, this month I'm beginning a series of podcasts about the Kaypro line of computers.  Kaypro had a rich and varied family of computers; certainly much more so than I ever realized.  In researching Kaypro, I discovered that while Andrew Kay, the founder of the computer company, was no longer around, it turns out his son David, who ran the company for some time, was still around.  I was able to contact David and he graciously agreed to talk with us for the podcast.  Kaypro has a very interesting storyline and I hope you enjoy this.  We talked so long that I decided to break the interview into 2 parts, so you'll hear part 1 this month, and part 2 next month.  Following that, we'll delve into episodes covering history, tech specs, etc. on the Kaypro.  All the usual topics.  It looks as though I'll have 2 episodes covering those topics. I will have a video for this posted to the Floppy Days Podcast on YouTube.  One note here.  This is one of the last videos where I used a videoconferencing tool that just didn't do a great job.  It has a tendency to not keep up with video and you may note that the mouth doesn't stay in sync with the audio sometimes during the interview.  In addition, audio-wise, you may hear some low clicks throughout the interview.  I've since switched to Zoom and it seems to do a better job of audio and video quality, albeit more expensive. You will hear ads from some great vintage computer stores, themselves vintage computer fans, throughout the early part of this podcast.  For all of these storefronts, when you place an order, please mention Floppy Days in the notes or comments of the order.  Doing so will help support the podcast.  Many thanks!! Please let me know your thoughts. Enjoy!! The Thanksgiving weekend edition of the Accunet Mortgage and Realty Show kicks off with the story behind Black Friday before diving into mortgage market timing. Brian Wickert and David Wickert explore why waiting for the Federal Reserve's December meeting might not be the best strategy, based on patterns observed throughout 2025.The episode features a cautionary tale about credit scores, where an $80 collection account from identity theft caused a nearly 100-point credit score drop, derailing a refinance opportunity. The Wickerts detail the extensive process required to dispute fraudulent accounts and restore credit standing.David introduces an innovative asset depletion loan program that transforms investment and brokerage accounts into qualifying income—without requiring retirement age or IRA status. This solution offers flexibility for buyers with substantial non-retirement assets who want to keep their money working in the market. The housing market discussion reveals surprising trends: while over a third of major U.S. markets experienced price drops, all Wisconsin markets showed growth. Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, and other Wisconsin cities are forecasting continued appreciation through 2026.The episode concludes with news about the 2026 conforming loan limit increase to $832,750 and reminds first-time buyers that only 3% down payment is required, regardless of income level.

Suzi talks with historian Eric Blanc about a timely chapter in American socialist history: the rise — and limits — of Milwaukee's “sewer socialists.” His article, “Socialists in City Hall? A New Look at Sewer Socialism in Wisconsin,” reexamines this often-disparaged experiment in municipal socialism at a moment when New York prepares for Zohran Mamdani's administration. Mamdani's victory — built on years of organizing in immigrant and working-class neighborhoods — reopens the question of whether socialists can not only win, but govern in America's most unequal cities. A century ago, Milwaukee elected socialist mayors who delivered clean, efficient, working-class governance — public power, parks, housing, and real material improvements. They weren't making a revolution; they were governing within capitalism, and ran up against its limits: employer backlash, national political shifts, and the hard reality that municipal power can only go so far without broader working-class strength. Eric argues that this history offers essential lessons for the Left today: how to build durable political organization, use office to win tangible gains, and govern competently while expanding working-class power — without mistaking municipal office for municipal socialism, or making the sewers more important than the socialism. In this short podcast, Bryan gives another history lesson and goes over the history of the thermostat. Before 1883, automatic temperature control simply did not exist; we shoveled fuel into the furnace and opened windows. If a room got too hot in a commercial building, the janitor would go downstairs to choke the draft damper; this person was responsible for manually controlling comfort. Warren S. Johnson, a Milwaukee-based college professor, sought to do something about his classroom's sweltering heat. He created a pneumatic thermostat that mounted to the wall, sensed temperature, and used air pressure and mechanical systems to control dampers. This invention grew in popularity, and he founded Johnson Controls. Compressed air ran entire HVAC networks by adjusting dampers and valves before electricity went mainstream. Engineers experimented with bi-metallic strips, which could open or close an electrical circuit based on temperature changes, which made thermostats smaller and cheaper. Honeywell came on the scene by hiring industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, who invented the mercury thermostat: the T87 round thermostat. When the bimetal coil tilted, mercury rolled from one end to the other to complete or open the circuit. These thermostats had a heat anticipator, which kept them from overshooting the temperature. Unfortunately, when these thermostats were disposed of, the mercury polluted the environment and affected the central nervous system. The digital thermostat came on the scene to replace the mercury thermostat, which led to the development of the Nest smart thermostat. However, all this time, comfort has been associated with the number on the thermostat; smart comfort controls that learn our routines and monitor dew point, relative humidity, and IAQ are the next step to create true comfort and health.   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? In this episode of The Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about experimenting with your own growth. My guest this week is Jen Wilson, a coach and consultant whose nontraditional career path has taught her that confidence doesn't come from perfection; it comes from trusting yourself to handle whatever happens next.Jen shares how she built her career through unexpected twists and turns, including co-founding innovative schools, burning out and then reinventing her work on her own terms. We explore why self-trust matters more than fearlessness, how small, low-risk experiments can rewire long-held patterns of self-doubt and practical ways to pause, observe your triggers and create new neural “tracks” that support courage and authentic action.About My GuestJennifer Wilson is a consultant, coach, educator, activist, and author. She founded New Leaf Coaching and Consulting in 2006 to partner with world-changing organizations, such as The Obama Foundation and NRDC, that are committed to social and environmental justice. As an abuse survivor, she uses both her pain and resilience to support others in their own healing.Jennifer earned a Masters in Counseling and Educational Psychology, leading to a career in community social work with youth and families before holding multiple roles within K12 public schools and higher education in Wisconsin. After co-founding two high schools serving marginalized urban youth in Milwaukee, she shifted her focus to working for transformational change within higher education and the nonprofit sectors to ensure that future generations live on a healthy planet in just societies.Jennifer has had a lifelong love affair with words and writing. She had her first byline in 4th grade, reporting the 4-H club news for her local paper, and the first book she bought with her own money was Roget's Thesaurus. When she's not reading or writing, she heads outside for inspiration, across her home state of Wisconsin and around the world. ~Connect with Jen:Book - Waking Up to Your Worth: https://consultnewleaf.com/waking-up-to-your-worth-ten-touchstones-for-overcoming-imposter-syndrome/ Website: https://consultnewleaf.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/consultnewleaf/ ~Connect with Kim and The Impostor Syndrome Files:Join the free Impostor Syndrome Challenge:https://www.kimmeninger.com/challengeLearn more about the Leading Humans discussion group:https://www.kimmeninger.com/leadinghumansgroupJoin the Slack channel to learn from, connect with and support other professionals: https://forms.gle/Ts4Vg4Nx4HDnTVUC6Join the Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadinghumansSchedule time to speak with Kim Meninger directly about your questions/challenges: https://bookme.name/ExecCareer/strategy-sessionConnect on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimmeninger/Website:https://kimmeninger.com

In this special memorial episode of the Arete Coach Podcast, host Severin Sorensen honors the extraordinary life and influence of Larry Cassidy—Marine Corps officer, corporate leader, Vistage Master Chair, mentor, and friend. Drawing from multiple past interviews, Sorensen reconstructs Larry's story, weaving together personal history, powerful coaching moments, signature questions, and original tribute songs written in Larry's honor. Born in 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Larry excelled academically and showed an early aptitude for public speaking. He later served as a Marine Corps Lieutenant and Captain, leading Marines in the Pacific region with discipline, courage, and “bark on the wood” truthfulness—a philosophy that shaped his entire coaching career. After a distinguished corporate career at General Mills, Quaker Oats, and Wilson Sporting Goods, Larry became a Vistage/TEC Chair in 1987. Over 38 years he earned numerous Vistage awards—including the Robert Nourse Chair of the Year Award and multiple Master Chair Awards—and became one of the most respected leaders in the Vistage global community. Sorensen pays tribute to his friend through archival dialogue, reflective commentary, and two original songs: “Bark on the Wood – The Unvarnished Truth” and “He Learned to Listen to Understand.” Larry discovered his true calling—guiding leaders through curiosity-driven, truth-seeking, deeply human conversations. He built a reputation for: piercing, soul-searching questionsempathetic listeningcourageous truth-telling (“with the bark on”)community-building (“The Romper Room” chair gatherings)and an unwavering belief in each leader's potential The Arete Coach Podcast continues to explore the art and science of executive coaching at the highest levels. On today's show: At what temperature do you stop wearing shorts? 02:31 – Detroit Lions narrowly defeat Giants, and the season is on the line The "Cardiac Cats" deliver another stressful win: the Lions barely get by the Giants. Jer and Fletcher break down the wild ride that is the Jameis Winston experience ("more fun when it's not your team on the line!"), and how Jamir Gibbs stepped up in historic fashion. Deep dive into what's working and what isn't—especially a candid convo about Jared Goff, the offensive coordinator, and whether the Lions are too predictable. The hosts highlight what must improve for Detroit with national eyes on them for Thanksgiving against the Packers—a critical NFC North matchup. Both agree: If the Lions want a real shot at the playoffs, they basically need to win out.  11:12 – Detroit Pistons: 12-Game Win Streak and Rising Hopes The Pistons are HOT: 14-2 with a 12-game win streak, taking down Milwaukee on the road (even if Giannis was out). "Are the Pistons for real?" Discussion weighs schedule quality, team growth, the impact of new players, and how Detroit is earning national respect. Local pride watch: Shoutout to Ryan Rollins (Macomb Dakota) leading Milwaukee in the absence of their stars. Being able to expect the Pistons to win games, not just "play hard"—Detroit fans everywhere can relate how good this feels! Call to listeners for vintage Pistons gear for the studio. 18:11 – Red Wings: "Wings in Flight" and Atlantic Division Leaders Quick coverage of the Red Wings' strong season—they're leading the Atlantic and scoring with flash. Props to Dylan Larkin, DeBrincat, and Lucas Raymond, plus some talk about the Yzerplan paying off. 19:35 – Stephen Carroll retires as DCFC Captain for Front Office Role Longtime Detroit City FC captain Stephen Carroll announces retirement from the pitch but stays with the club in a (yet-to-be-named) front office role.
