GB2RS News Sunday the 23rd of March 2025 The news headlines: The RSGB launches its new web app RSGB Elected Board Director unopposed candidates are announced Full details of the RSGB 2025 AGM have been released The RSGB is excited to give you a first look at its new app! The web version has just been launched and is a one-stop shop for all RadCom publications and club newsletters. You can find the web version at rsgb.org/radcom It gives RSGB members easy access to over ten years of back issues of RadCom, as well as RadCom Basics and Plus. The Society will be adding more back issues of RadCom from the archive in the coming months, making it even more valuable. All you need is your RSGB membership portal details to access the editions. If you're not an RSGB member, you can still view a sample edition of RadCom through the web version of the app. If you like what you see, you can become an RSGB member via rsgb.org/join which will give you access to the back issues of RadCom and its sister publications. Watch this space for news of the release of the RSGB mobile app later this year. For some roles in the RSGB elections, a single nomination was received. These include the two vacancies for Elected Board Directors. Peter Bowyer, G4MJS and Mark Savage, M0XIC will each take up the role of Board Director at the end of the RSGB AGM on the 12th of April 2025. Both were interviewed separately to enable RSGB members to hear their views on the current issues facing amateur radio and the Society. Their answers were combined into two videos: the first ‘short' video is just two quick questions, and the second video is a more in-depth interview. You can watch them both on the RSGB website and its YouTube channel. For more information about each of these unopposed candidates, see the April 2025 issue of RadCom or go to rsgb.org/candidates The RSGB 2025 AGM will take place at 10 am on Saturday the 12th of April. The event will be held online to ensure that as many members as possible can watch and take part. The formal business of the meeting will include the results of members' votes on the resolutions and details about the election. The RSGB President John McCullagh, GI4BWM will give a video review of 2024, and the Society will announce the recipients of its annual awards and trophies, as well as the winners of its construction competition. You can ask the Board questions on the day via Zoom or the YouTube live chat, or by submitting a written question in advance. After the main AGM meeting, the RSGB is delighted to have a presentation about the Society's strategy. Led by Board Director Mark Jones, G0MGX, there will also be contributions from Board Director Ben Lloyd, GW4BML; Spectrum Forum Chair Murray Niman, G6JYB; and Bob Beebe, GU4YOX who will at that point be the new RSGB President. Find out more by going to rsgb.org/agm Maritime Radio Day 2025 starts at 1200UTC on the 14th of April and finishes at 2300UTC on the 15th of April. Using SSB on the 160 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number.  Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 20th of March 2025 Last week was pretty unremarkable from an HF perspective. After the disturbed geomagnetic conditions on the 12th to the 14th when the Kp index rose to five, conditions were a little more settled. The solar flux index hit 204 on the 17th of March but then declined back to the 180s. Having said that things were settled, the Kp index did exceed four for three periods on the 19th, peaking at 4.67. This had the effect of reducing the MUF over a 3,000km path to 21-24MHz. We also had two M-class solar flares on the 17th and the 19th, with the latter causing a coronal mass ejection that may give Earth a glancing blow around the 22nd of March. As spring progresses, we may find the F2-layer MUF dropping as we move to summer ionospheric conditions, perhaps to be replaced by enhanced sporadic-E conditions on 10 metres instead. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index may drop further, perhaps hitting 150 on the 28th. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are forecast for the 25th to the 28th, with a maximum Kp index of five. As we said last week, this is now a peak period for auroral activity, given the angle that the Earth makes with the Sun. The 'Russell-McPherron' effect is down to the alignment of the Sun and Earth around the spring and autumn equinox and means that you are twice as likely to experience the aurora in spring and autumn than in winter and summer. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The recent fine weather has provided some useful Tropo. This has been mainly towards the east and into the near continent, which seemed like nice timing for the 1.3GHz UK Activity Contest last Tuesday evening. Despite this, many participants reported conditions as poor. The high is now moving away and by the time you hear this, it will be a predominantly low-pressure weather sequence from now on. This means limited Tropo in the coming week, and rain scatter comes to the fore as a mode of choice if you have a GHz band set up. The solar conditions continue to provide a trickle charge of auroral alerts, but not enough for any significant operating advantage. As usual the message is to keep on top of things by monitoring the Kp index for values over 5. Meteor scatter remains largely in the gift of random meteors, so it's an early start to catch the pre-dawn peak of random meteors if you are so persuaded. Lastly, a mention of Sporadic-E which is still in its close season. We have a while to wait until later next month when we could expect the occasional stirrings on 10m. EME path losses continue to improve until the Moon's perigee (its closest point to Earth) on the morning of the 30th of March. Moon declination has been falling, reaching a minimum yesterday, the 22nd. So again, we have short Moon windows and reduced peak Moon elevation. 144MHz sky noise started high on Friday the 21st of March but will drop back to low by the middle of next week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Using all modes on the 4m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.   Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 13th of March 2025 We've had another week of disturbed geomagnetic conditions with the Kp index at four or five for long periods. On the evening of the 12th of March, Kp was five and, at the time of writing, has stayed there for a total of five three-hour periods. This has taken its toll on the ionosphere with MUFs over a 3,000km path down to less than 24.7MHz during daylight. Meanwhile, the solar flux index rose to 160 on Thursday the 13th after hitting a low of 147 on the 7th. The best HF propagation was last weekend, the 8th and 9th of March, just in time for the Commonwealth Contest. This saw stations around the world romping into the UK, including signals from Australia, New Zealand, the Falkland Islands, Barbados, and many others. As contacts were limited to Commonwealth countries, it meant the UK had little QRM to contend with and it was fairly easy to fill the log book on 40m to 10m. Australia was still coming in at 59 after dark, and even British Columbia on the west coast of Canada could be worked with simple wire antennas and low power. This may have been caused by a pre-auroral enhancement, as the Kp index rose late on the first day of the contest. Next week, NOAA predicts the solar flux index may rise to 195 by the 21st. It also suggests that we may be back into calmer geomagnetic conditions with a maximum Kp index of two. This will be a welcome change and, if it happens, will no doubt result in better HF conditions. And remember, March is a good month for north-south contacts, such as the UK to South Africa and the UK to South America. But with the equinox just around the corner, auroras are twice as common due to the Russell-McPherron effect. Just as when two bar magnets attract one another when they are oriented oppositely, so opposite Bz components attract. During the autumn and spring equinox, this orientation enables a 'connection' to the Sun, thereby allowing the solar wind to stream in. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The recent change to colder weather brought showers and potential rain scatter to the second half of last week. But this weekend we have lost the showers and gained a large region of high pressure to bring a hint of Tropo. It's not perfect, since in cold air highs like this, conditions are usually less than ideal, so don't expect too much from this particular area of high pressure.  The high will last until midweek before it slips away into eastern Europe and, on its parting, may allow some moisture below the inversion and will improve the Tropo prospects briefly. The second half of the coming week will be dominated by low pressure and back to rain-scatter as an option on the GHz bands. The solar conditions have continued to provide a few weak auroral alerts and it's worth continuing a watching brief on the Kp index for hints of activity; anything greater than a Kp of five is worth our interest. Listen out for watery-sounding signals on the LF bands and then check out the 10m and 6m bands for auroral signals. The next important meteor shower is the April Lyrids, but there's always the chance of random meteor scatter activity, particularly in the pre-dawn hours. It's still a little early to mention Sporadic-E, but it's always worth looking at the lower frequencies first, which means 10m and 6m. Check the graphs on Propquest for signs of spikes in the foEs, which is the critical frequency of the Es-layer. EME path losses continue to rise until apogee on Monday evening. Moon declination is still falling, reaching a minimum on Saturday the 22nd. So again, we have short Moon windows and reduced peak Moon elevation. 144MHz sky noise is moderate and rising to high by Friday the 21st. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

The formal business of the meeting will include the results of members' votes on the resolutions, including the endorsement of three Nominated Directors. The President will give a video review of 2023 and the Society will announce the recipients of its annual awards and trophies, as well as the winners of its construction competition. At the end of the meeting, there will be a recorded presentation on “Making amateur radio licensing fit for the future” by Ofcom Group Director, Spectrum, David Willis. This will be followed by a live Q&A on the new licence conditions, with four senior RSGB representatives answering your questions: President, John McCullagh, GI4BWM; Board Chair, Stewart Bryant, G3YSX; General Manager, Steve Thomas, M1ACB; and Spectrum Forum Chair, Murray Niman, G6JYB. You can find more information about the candidates, voting and how to ask the Board a question on the RSGB AGM web pages at rsgb.org/agm British Science Week is drawing to a close and lots of exciting activities have been going on. Radio amateurs across the country have been encouraging young people to explore and understand our hobby and there have been some wonderful ways of incorporating the theme of “Time” into amateur radio activities. The RSGB would like to thank those who have shared ideas and resources, promoting the magic of radio communications with young people. There will be a report in the June issue of RadCom to showcase the activities that have happened and to inspire people to get involved next year! Perhaps you ran a construction day, set up and operated a radio station in a school or achieved a QSO with GB3RS at the RSGB National Radio Centre. Whatever you've been doing, please send your reports, with separate high-resolution photographs, to radcom@rsgb.org.uk by the 21st of April 2024. The RSGB would welcome feedback about what worked well, what you learned and how the Society could develop its British Science Week activities next year. Please email the RSGB British Science Week Coordinator Ian Neal, M0KEO at bsw@rsgb.org.uk to share your thoughts. Early in February the RSGB announced that the fees for Foundation, Intermediate and Full level examinations would increase from the 1st of May 2024. You can now use the online booking system to book an exam before the 1st of May at the current price or select exam dates from the 1st of May at the new prices. Please ensure you make the correct date selection, as booking errors that need to be changed may incur an administration fee as outlined in the exam terms and conditions. To book an exam, go to the Student Information section of the RSGB website and choose the option to book and pay for your exam from the right hand menu. The RadCom Contesting column has new editors! The RSGB Contest Committees will be overseeing the column and have planned a schedule of topics. Some will be written by members of the three contesting committees, and some by others who can share their experiences. As well as information about various aspects of contesting, the committees hope that the column will feature a contesting tip of the month, a featured UK contester, as well as a contest of the month. Once each issue is published, the column content will be shared on the RSGB website to provide a useful resource about contesting. You can see a list of the planned topics at rsgb.org/radcom-contesting  The committees are keen to hear from people who would like to be involved, so if you would like to suggest a missing topic or offer to write something for the column, please email ContestClub@rsgbcc.org And now for details of rallies and events Callington Radio and Electronics Rally is taking place today, the 17th. Using all modes on the 4m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 14th of March 2024 What a difference a month makes. We've gone from a solar flux index up to almost 200, to one that is down in the 120s. Over the past week, we have had only two M-class solar flares, which means we have had limited coronal mass ejection activity and therefore low Kp indices. Last weekend's Commonwealth Contest saw UK amateurs making plenty of HF contacts, some with Australia, but everyone agreed that HF propagation was a little lacklustre. There is a daily chance of moderate-class solar flares from AR 3607, the largest sunspot region, but all remaining spots remain mostly small and simple. The solar wind speed has been quite high with sporadic periods of a south-pointing Bz field. This is what has pushed the Kp index to three, but this isn't a big threat to HF. There is a slight chance of unsettled intervals caused by a weak coronal hole near the south centre of the solar disc coupled with the fast solar wind. NOAA reports that active region 3590 has been detected on the far side of the Sun using helioseismology. This may mean that it will still be active and a threat when it returns in a week or so. This region was the source of the X6 solar flare on the 22nd of February – the largest so far in solar cycle 25. Next week, commencing the 18th of March, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will remain in the 120 to 130 range, although the US Air Force predicts it could reach 150. Geomagnetic conditions are likely to be mainly settled with a maximum Kp index of two or three.  So, this is a reasonable forecast for HF propagation, which should remain open up to 28MHz during daylight hours. This is also a good time for north-south paths, such as the UK to South Africa, and the UK to South America. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The continuing theme of unsettled weather will produce further spells of rain and heavy showers and once again provide some rain scatter options on the GHz bands. Another thing to mention is that, as we move towards the latter part of the month, the intensity of showers becomes greater due to the additional warmth improving the effectiveness of the rain scatter process. It is very hard to find any traditional Tropo until we get well into the coming week. It may occur on Thursday the 21st when a high will develop a ridge from Biscay across southern Britain and the near continent. This should provide a chance of Tropo for the final few days of the coming week. Unfortunately, this is not in time for the UK Activity Contest on 1.3GHz on Tuesday the 19th, but the 70MHz UK Activity Contest on Thursday the 21st may be luckier. The north of Britain may start to see the next low bringing rain over that weekend, so although it has an early exit from any Tropo, at least being well north gives Scottish stations a head start for any aurora, which tends to favour the spring months. Meteor scatter remains in the random territory – try just before sunrise for best results. But with the next major shower being the Lyrids in late April, we have a while to wait for an uptick in activity. Lastly, a brief mention of Sporadic-E. It has popped up with some weak events on the Dourbes plots on Propquest, but the main season is still a little way off. Maybe check next month for a heads-up on the lower bands like 28 and 50MHz. Of course, digital modes will get a head start, so best to check the clusters and chatrooms for signs of fleeting activity. Some UK stations reported 50MHz trans-equatorial propagation to Africa last week, so check for that. For EME operators, Moon declination reaches a maximum on Sunday, but path losses are starting to increase again. 144MHz sky noise is moderate, falling to low on Wednesday. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Using RTTY on the 80 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.   Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 7th of March 2024 As predicted, a coronal mass ejection, or CME for short, affected the ionosphere last weekend, the 2nd and 3rd of March, pushing maximum usable frequencies down and sparking auroral displays that were visible as far south as Cornwall. The plasma hit the Earth around midday on Sunday the 3rd, eventually pushing the Kp index to more than 5 for nine hours. It eventually started to settle again, dropping to 4 for six hours, before then moving back to background levels by the morning of the 4th. The solar wind speed was not that high, being around 350 kilometres per second, but the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field, or IMF, was pointing sharply south for a long period. This allowed the solar plasma to couple with the Earth's magnetic field more easily, and it flooded in. The maximum usable frequency was impacted, and it took until late morning on the 4th  before the 10m band was usable again over a 3,000km path. This probably impacted northerly paths the most with southerly paths being relatively unscathed. The rest of the week was generally free from coronal mass ejection chaos with the Kp index remaining below 3. Attention is now turning to active region 3599, which has expanded in size. It may therefore be a threat for an M-class solar flare and potential CME. Next week, commencing Monday the 11th, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will be around 135, but may then increase to 170 by the 15th. We are heading towards the equinox, which means that geomagnetic disturbances are likely to be more common and harsher. They are almost twice as likely in spring and autumn versus the winter and summer. If the Kp index stays low, though, this can be a good time for HF. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO This weekend, the 9th and 10th, a strengthening southeasterly wind will develop over the country as low pressure moves into Biscay and a strong high builds over Scandinavia. Unfortunately, this may not be useful for Tropo since the high is a long way to the northeast and stronger winds usually prohibit the development of a quality inversion. All this changes again over this second weekend of March, the 9th and 10th, as low pressure pushes fronts into southern Britain. It won't last long though and a weak ridge will cross the country on Tuesday the 12th, which may bring some Tropo support for southeastern Britain into the continent for the 432MHz UK Activity Contest on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, an Atlantic low will cross northern areas with rain and possible rain scatter options, but this will soon clear to leave a weak high over the country and it's a return to Tropo conditions for the remainder of the week. The upshot of all this is that Tropo will be an off-and-on affair, but worth a look. The other modes, not so much. Although, as we said in the HF section, spring is a good time of the year for auroral activity and, after the recent visible aurora, we should keep a watch for activity and a high Kp index. There has been the odd fleeting pulse of Sporadic-E showing on the Propquest graphs recently. This has been noticeable on the LF bands sometimes but is not yet a big player for the usual Sporadic-E bands of 10m, 6m and beyond. However, on digital modes, UK stations have seen 50MHz trans-equatorial propagation, or TEP, to Africa last week – so check for that. For EME operators, Moon declination is still negative but goes positive again on Monday. Path losses are approaching minimum with perigee today, Sunday the 10th. 144MHz sky noise is low all week except today, the 10th, when the Sun is close to the Moon and in the beamwidth of antennas. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

GB2RS News Sunday the 3rd of March 2024 The news headlines: The Calling Notice for the RSGB's 2024 AGM is now online New HF beacon list released by the RSGB's Propagation Studies Committee The next RSGB Tonight@8 webinar is coming up The Calling Notice for the RSGB's 2024 AGM is now online. The Notice includes the resolutions and information about the three Nominated Directors who are being put forward for endorsement by RSGB members. You can also read the minutes of last year's AGM. Voting opens on Wednesday the 13th of March. On that same day, you will be able to submit a question for the RSGB Board via a web form or register to ask a question via video on Zoom. For more information go to the Society's website at rsgb.org/agm The RSGB's Propagation Studies Committee has released a new HF beacon list, with the 10m band listings completely revamped. The old list, which was started by Martin Harrison, G3USF Silent Key, had been added to over the years but was getting out of date. The only way to make it more accurate was to start again. The Propagation Studies Committee made use of the Reverse Beacon Network which wasn't available when the list was originally created, plus listeners' contributions from around the world. The new beacon list can be found at rsgb.org/beacons Have you wondered what happens at a VHF National Field Day? Would you like to take part in one? In this month's Tonight@8 webinar, on Monday the 4th of March, the RSGB offers two different perspectives. Firstly, RSGB VHF Contest Committee member Richard, G4HGI will talk about how the RSGB VHF Contest Committee uses the VHF Survey and other tools to formulate the rules and calendar for all VHF Contests, with specific emphasis on VHF National Field Day. Secondly, three members of the Lothians Radio Society, GM3HAM will explain how they organise and operate these hilltop events within the Scottish borders. The club has made a short, professional film capturing their 2023 VHF National Field Day weekend. They will show clips of that and of an old cinema film to show how this looked from a technical standpoint at much earlier club competition events in the 1970s. This will be a great evening so put it in your diary and be inspired! You can watch and ask questions live on the RSGB YouTube channel or a special BATC channel. Go to rsgb.org/webinars to find out more. The RSGB has made two safeguarding announcements. Firstly, the Society's safeguarding policy has been revised in line with modern practices and you can find it on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/policies  Secondly, if your club relies on the RSGB's affiliated club insurance for activities that may have a safeguarding requirement, it is important that you are aware of the conditions in Section 10 of that insurance. You can find the insurance details in your club portal on the RSGB website. The Radio Society of Harrow is running a one-day classroom-style Foundation course on Saturday the 23rd of March at its venue in Watford. If you know anyone who would like to join the course, please tell them to email Brian, G3YKB at g3ykb@yahoo.co.uk  There will be an optional extra session on the morning of the 24th. Following complaints from some members, the RSGB has investigated a problem with the non-delivery of RadCom on Guernsey and the Isle of Man. It seems that following changes at Royal Mail, the labelling requirement for these copies was incorrectly applied by the printers and these copies didn't go through the postal system correctly. The Society is sorry that this error has occurred and apologises for any inconvenience caused. It has, of course, asked its printers to ensure that there is no repetition of this problem, and the printer has paid for the two missing copies to be sent to each RSGB member in those areas. If your RadCom doesn't arrive in future, please email the RSGB membership team via membership@rsgb.org.uk so they can send a replacement and track any wider problems. Those who enjoy constructing and operating with low-power devices will be interested to know that a QRP conference is taking part in Rennes in the northwest of France on the 18th of May 2024. Using SSB on the 80m band, the exchange is your six-character locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 29th of February 2024 Active region 3590, which was the large sunspot group that threatened us with solar flares and coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, has now moved to the Sun's limb and is no longer a threat. Region 3590 was potentially dangerous but ultimately wasn't too bad. Yes, we had flares, but they were only minor C-class and M-class events. Three recent CMEs, which will all probably miss Earth, but with a risk of some glancing influence, are most likely to have arrived by this weekend, ending the 3rd of March. However, old active region 3576 will begin to turn into view off the southeast limb by the end of today, the 3rd. The Kp index rose to 4.67 during one three-hour period on Tuesday the 27th of February, but the disturbance was short-lived and HF propagation wasn't too badly affected. Speaking of which, there have been some good HF openings to the Pacific area over the last week. Spotted have been 3D2AG in Fiji on the 17m band, VK on the 10m band, and the H40WA Temotu DXpedition to the Solomon Islands. This latter DXpedition has mostly been spotted on FT8 Fox and Hounds mode in the UK. The maximum usable frequency, or MUF, over a 3,000km path still remains above 28MHz during daytime, with MUFs over 14 to 15MHz at night. So, as we head into March and towards the spring equinox, HF is still looking good. Next week, NOAA predicts the solar flux index will be in the range of 165 to 170. The Kp index is predicted to be two all week, but that is suspect and dependent on coronal mass ejections – or a lack of them. At this point in the cycle, anything could happen. With six or seven active regions visible, the risk of a flare and CME remains relatively high. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The overall weather pattern remains very unsettled with further active lows and weather fronts crossing the country. There will also be periods with stronger winds and it may be cold enough for some wintry weather, especially over northern hills. The upshot of all this is that Tropo will once again be a rarity, but rain scatter may offer some comfort to those on the GHz bands. Later in the coming week, high pressure will strengthen over Norway and this will produce quite strong winds over the North Sea and eastern UK and perhaps encourage paths to the east, but it's probably marginal at best in terms of Tropo. The prospects for aurora and meteor scatter are not especially reliable, but it was encouraging to hear of some digital activity on the 6m band earlier in the week to South Africa and Lesotho. This was probably the result of Trans Equatorial Propagation or TEP, as suggested in last week's news. The spring period is a fairly good time to listen for TEP, timed between the decay of the southern hemisphere summer Sporadic-E season and the start of the northern hemisphere summer Sporadic-E season. It's well worth checking for similar activity during March for paths to the southern hemisphere via TEP. Signals can be strong enough for SSB or CW modes, so it is not exclusively for digital modes. For EME operators, Moon declination drops to a minimum on Tuesday. Path losses are past their peak now and falling until perigee on Sunday the 10th. 144MHz sky noise is moderate to high, reaching a peak of over 2,500 Kelvin on Tuesday the 12th. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

sent $$$ this week to Norcal Resist.norcalresist.orgHi, I’m changing things up a little over here. Since July 2020 I’ve sent weekly cash to an entity or person doing the work or in need of funds. Connecting it to the radio show has been a way for me to budget and redistribute money regularly and to share about where I was sending it so maybe you would too. Well, I did my taxes and turns out my budgeting was off. For now I’m just going to do a monthly sustainer with Norcal Resist at a more sustainable rate until I can get back to it. I’m giving some time to mutual aid projects, but I’ll try to do more. If you’re in a position to give money to people/groups, and you haven’t yet made a plan to do it on the regular, I urge you to figure it out.Love, HoshwaDOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Major Murphy “Coming Around” Lafayette EPMore Eaze “the symphony” ConveyanceT-Rextasy “Coffee?” Odpady morskie. Zrównoważone rybołówstwo. To trzy filary działalności Fundacji Mare i palące kwestie związane z ochroną ekosystemu Morza Bałtyckiego. O nich wszystkich rozmawiałam z Olgą Sarną – aktywistką, prezeską Fundacji Mare, czyli jedynej w Polsce (!!!) organizacji pozarządowej, skupiającej się na ochronie ekosystemów morskich.Serdecznie zapraszam Was do wysłuchania rozmowy. Plus all Patreon supporters get their own unique ad-free podcast feed.   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 27thJuly. It's  Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   LUCID GOES PUBLIC   - Shares of luxury electric vehicle start-up Lucid Motors rose nearly 10% on Monday following their Nasdaq debut as the race to populate the world's roads and highways with electric vehicles continues to heat up.   - The startup received about $4.4 billion in cash from the transaction, after expenses, according to reports. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has invested more than $1 billion in Lucid. It will own about 60% of the company. The reverse-merger deal, which faced last-minute challenges being approved due to difficulties communicating to retail investors holding the stock to vote, values Lucid at around $24 billion.   - The Lucid Air has a price tag of around $70,000 after tax credits, while the Air Dream Edition will cost $162,000. The EV features an autonomous driving system with 32 sensors including long-distance Lidar   Original Source: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/lucid-motors-set-to-debut-with-valuation-of-around-24-billion/ar-AAMzfuL   PLUGIN VEHICLES HIT 19% MARKET SHARE IN EUROPE IN JUNE   - The European passenger plugin vehicle market continues in the fast lane, having gotten over 237,000 registrations in June and over a million registrations YTD   - Last month's plugin vehicle share of the overall auto market was 19% (10% full electrics/BEVs), which pulled the 2021 plugin vehicle (PEV) share to 16% (7.6% for BEVs alone).   - #1 Tesla Model 3 — The sports sedan had another peak month, scoring 26,178 deliveries in June, its best performance ever in Europe and the second best performance ever by an EV in this market, only behind the 28,110 units of the ID.3 that Volkswagen registered (or, should I say, pre-registered) last December.   - #2 Renault Zoe — Its 8,244 deliveries in June show that the French hatchback is recovering its good form. This is its best score this year.   - #3 Volkswagen ID.3 — The German hatchback is slowly returning to form as well, getting 7,101 deliveries last month, its best score in 2021.   - #4 Volkswagen ID.4 — Sitting on the vortex of the current hottest trends (plugins and compact crossovers), much is expected from the new Volkswagen, especially considering that its ID.3 sibling is yet to fill the Volkswagen Golf's admittedly big shoes. … In June, the Volkswagen crossover had 6,619 registrations.   - Still outside the top 20, a mention is due for the first full month of two important models, with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 retro-futuristic XXL hatchback scoring 1,102 registrations, while the attractive Audi Q4 e-tron had 1,869 registrations in June   Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/07/25/plugin-vehicles-hit-19-market-share-in-europe-in-june-tesla-model-3-has-best-month-ever/   NEW MERCEDES EQE SUV CONFIRMED FOR LAUNCH IN 2022   - Mercedes has confirmed that a third pure-electric SUV will arrive in 2022 with the launch of the Tesla Model X-rivalling EQE SUV.   - It won't be the largest Mercedes electric SUV we'll see in the coming years, but it will be positioned towards the top end of the company's EV line-up, sitting above the EQC and the smaller EQA and EQB SUVs when it arrives.   - The EQE badge will be shared across a large saloon and the SUV.   - From the A-pillars back, the SUV takes on more traditional 4x4 proportions. Compared to the EQC, styling changes include a stubbier bonnet, longer wheelbase and a more swept-back cabin. The EQE will sit on the same EVA2 underpinnings as the EQS limo. It also marks a shift away from the conventions set by the EQC, which uses a modified version of the GLC's platform rather than dedicated electric architecture.   - As well as ensuring the EQE is able to accommodate a large battery, Mercedes has also been prioritising ultra-rapid recharging with the new architecture.   Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/352810/new-mercedes-eqe-suv-confirmed-launch-2022   THE UK'S FIRST EV-ONLY TRACKDAY   - This is an exclusive event for EV owners to drive their vehicles on track. Llandow is perfect for all levels of driver and offers some technically challenging corners even though it's smaller than most other UK tracks.   - The number of cars on track at any one time will be very limited. We've invited Ed Moore and his team of driver coaches from Motorsport Events/Stay Sharp along. They will be on hand all day to give help and advice on and off track. This is the perfect chance to find out how your car performs on track in a relaxed atmosphere with like-minded EV owners. No earplugs required!   - This is also the very first time a trackday has been organised exclusively for Electric Vehicles in the UK, so you'll be making history!   - The nearest Tesla Superchargers are 11 miles from Llandow at Sarn services   - £180.00 Inc VAT   Original Source : https://www.tevo.solutions/events/the-uks-first-ev-only-trackday---18th-august-2021    VW PUSHES AHEAD WITH 'SUPER PLATFORM' FOR SELF-DRIVING ELECTRIC CARS   - Volkswagen Group will produce 40 million vehicles on its new electric "super platform" that will replace combustion-engine and full-electric platforms used by its brands including VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi and Porsche.   - The automaker is accelerating the development of the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) despite having only recently started the rollouts of its MEB electric platform for volume EVs and its PPE architecture for upscale electric cars.   - VW Group's development chief Markus Duesmann, who is also Audi's CEO, said the design of the SSP platform with its differing 'modules,' battery sizes and body lengths will allow plenty of brand differentiation.   - "We will reduce today's complexity by about 50 percent. And I think you can understand what this means for us in terms of economies of scale," Duesmann said.   - "By the end of this decade, we will have rolled out as SSP across all of our core segments and all brand groups," Duesmann said. By 2030, cars on the SSP platform would "already cover a bigger volume than PPE and MEB put together," he said.   Original Source : https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-pushes-ahead-super-platform-self-driving-electric-cars   GOOD LUCK GETTING A STATE REBATE ON YOUR NEW ELECTRIC CAR   - Sam Dudley of Encino knows that California government has gone all in on zero-emission vehicles. So has he. He's all about cutting back on greenhouse gases. In May, Dudley splurged on a new electric car, a metallic black Chevy Bolt EV LT. He loves it.But now it's July, and the after-school program director, 39, wonders when the state will make good on the EV-incentive rebate money it owes him.He figures he's due $4,500. He might have to wait until next year for a check to arrive, he said a rebate program representative told him by phone. And, he was warned, he and thousands of others might not get back as much money as promised, or might not receive any money at all.   Original Source : https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-07-23/good-luck-getting-a-state-rebate-on-your-new-electric-car   EUROPE TO BOOST BATTERY PRODUCTION AS ELECTRIC-VEHICLE SHIFT ACCELERATES   - If Europe is going to shift to electric cars, it will need lots of batteries. After years of slow progress, there are now plans to invest 40 billion euros (S$64 billion) in 38 European factories that could turn out 1,000 gigawatt hours of batteries per year,   - With average battery capacity of 60 kilowatt hours, that would be enough to power 16.7 million vehicles   - EU Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic recently said the planned factories put the EU "well on track to achieve open strategic autonomy in this critical sector".   - Europe has domestic sources of lithium, notably in the Czech Republic and Germany, but it will also probably have to depend on imports.  Mr Montique said Europe would likely end up "developing supply agreements with markets where there are abundant resources, favourable diplomatic ties, and strong investment frameworks" to reduce the threat of shortages.   Original Source : https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/transport/europe-to-boost-battery-production-as-electric-vehicle-shift-accelerates   POLESTAR TO LAUNCH IN FURTHER NINE MARKETS   - wedish electric performance car brand Polestar said Monday that it will launch in a further nine markets in 2021 and double its retail locations to support the brand's continuing growth.   - The brand currently has city-center retail locations under its Polestar Spaces concept, but is introducing larger, easy-to-access out-of-town locations where the company can also hand over customers' cars, in a new concept called Polestar Destinations   - by the end of 2021 it will be present in 18 countries and have up to 100 retail locations,   Original Source : https://www.marketwatch.com/story/swedish-electric-car-brand-polestar-to-launch-in-further-nine-markets-double-retail-locations-271627299496   A ROBOT THAT CHARGES ELECTRIC CARS BY ITSELF   - The Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) in Austria teamed up with the ARTI Robots start-up and the electric vehicle service ALVERI to develop “ALVERI - CharBo” – a robot capable of charging parked electric cars without human supervision.  The robot can move autonomously between the cars, recognize charging connections, and plug in. Electric vehicles are on the rise, and so is the demand for charging infrastructure. This creates a noticeable disparity, which this robot aims to fix.   - At the moment, the charging lid of the vehicle needs to be kept open, so the robot recognises that it needs to be charged. In the future, the team plans to remove this inconvenience, by establishing some sort of communication between the vehicle and the robot, either through an app or something else.   Original Source : https://www.themayor.eu/en/a/view/graz-university-of-technology-presents-a-robot-that-charges-electric-cars-by-itself-8491   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   With 2877 Superchargers globally and 25000 stalls, what do you think about Tesla's plan to open up the network to everyone?   Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.   PREMIUM PARTNERS PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBY PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI AUDI CINCINNATI EAST VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

From British Fantasy Award-winning author Jen Williams comes the electrifying conclusion to the Winnowing Flame trilogy. Exhilarating epic fantasy for fans of Robin Hobb. All is chaos. All is confusion. The Jure'lia are weak, but the war is far from over. Ebora was once a glorious city, defended by legendary warriors and celebrated in song. Now refugees from every corner of Sarn seek shelter within its crumbling walls, and the enemy that has poisoned their land won't lie dormant for long. The deep-rooted connection that Tormalin, Noon and the scholar Vintage share with their Eboran war-beasts has kept them alive so far. But with Tor distracted, and his sister Hestillion hell-bent on bringing ruthless order to the next Jure'lia attack, the people of Sarn need all the help they can get. Noon is no stranger to playing with fire and knows just where to recruit a new - and powerful - army. But even she underestimates the epic quest that is to come. It is a journey wrought with pain and sacrifice - a reckoning that will change the face of Sarn forever. Join forces with the heroes of the Winnowing Flame Trilogy as they strive to silence the Jure'lia's poison song once and for all.

Kata for Grinding up broken (or unbroken) amulets and images into Sacred Powders; For contemplative destruction of broken amulets, or even whole unbroken sacred amulets (as used as a method of non clinging, and contemplation of transience in the Mahayana Sand Mandala painting creation, and subsequent destruction). To empower with mind rapture and cosmic insight during the grinding of sacred powders using a pestle and mortar, it is useful to use the following kata  Rupang suunyang anijjang nipannang na tugkhang anatta    Rupang = assumed form/shape  Suunyang = zero - cessation, dissolution, nothingness, emptiness, void Anijjang = anijja /impermanent/transient Nippanang = enters into the end of the fidgety incessant action and constant presence of dissatisfactory transient states, and becomes one with everything else  Na Tugkhang = not Dhukkha or not dissatisfactory in state of existential separateness (illusion of being as a self that does not exist) - no longer suffering Anatta = without an identity or name that is inherently part of it, and descriptive of its unchanging self. This formula, is 'nork dtamra' (not inside any ancient formula i know of) and inherited through insight, not mouth to ear lineage transmission. Meaning 'self invented, or discovered.. uncovered..' the American Indigenous People, at least the Haida of what we now know as Canada, believe all forms to already exist, and in their carvings, are merely uncovered, not invented, for Nature has invented all forms which can exist, since the beginning, and we are merely here to uncover them for ourself, and/or reveal them to others. In the same way, i believe all physical and metaphysical laws and Dhammas to be as the Buddha declared them to be.. Namely not of his Own Invention or Formulation, rather, that this Dhamma has Existed since the Beginninglessness of Timeless Eternity, and that he has merely Uncovered or Discovered it, and Revealed it to All Humans and Devas. Hence, this formulation, is not my invention, rather, has been uncovered, as we uncover all things we find in the journey within our own minds

The Fifth Doctor and Turlough are drawn to the planet Sarn by Kamelion, where they encounter in one of his diabolical plans to tap the power of the Numismaton gas. [] Plot On the desert world of Sarn, robed natives worship the fire god Logar and follow the Chief Elder, Timanov, who demands obedience. Those who dissent are known as Unbelievers, and two of them, Amyand and Roskal, cause unrest when they claim to have ventured to the top of the sacred fire mountain but not found Logar. One of the Sarns, Malkon, is known as the Chosen One because of the unusual double triangle symbol burnt into his skin: he is also unusual for having been found as a baby on the slopes of the fire mountain. The same triangle symbol is found on a metal artefact uncovered in an archaeological dig in overseen by Professor Howard Foster. His stepdaughter Perpugilliam (usually called "Peri") Brown is bored with the dig and wants to go travelling in Morocco and when he seeks to prevent this she steals the strange artefact and tries to swim for freedom. Fortunately for her the has landed nearby – responding to a distress call sent by the strange artefact - and Turlough sees her drowning and rescues her. Going through her possessions as she recovers he finds the artefact and acknowledges the same triangle symbol is burnt into his own flesh. The returns to the TARDIS after attempting to triangulate the source of the signal being emitted by the artefact, and the ship dematerialises, seemingly on its own. It soon arrives on Sarn and the Doctor and Turlough set off to explore. The Doctor's other companion, the android Kamelion, has meanwhile made mental contact with its old controller, , who attempts to assert his control and change Kamelion's appearance from that of Howard. Kamelion tries to warn Peri of the Master but the succeeds in gaining control. She flees the TARDIS with the creature in pursuit as the rumblings of the volcanoes of Sarn gather ferocity. In the Sarn colony Timanov has damned the Unbelievers to be sacrificed to appease Logar and stop the tremors. They flee to a secret base in the mountains which is filled with seismological apparatus and which the Doctor and Turlough stumble across. The Doctor informs the Unbelievers that the tunnels, which have been their refuge are volcanic vents which will soon fill with molten lava. It is also established that Turlough is of the same race as those who colonised the planet, and when the indigenous people see his Misos Triangle, they greet him as a second Chosen One. Turlough realises Malkon may be his brother and becomes even more worried when Peri turns up and mentions the Master. Another important figure in Sarn mythology is the Outsider, a promised prophet, and the Master/Kamelion fulfils this role admirably. He convinces Timanov of the appropriateness of harsh action and when the Doctor arrives with the Unbelievers they are all seized for burning. However, Malkon and Peri arrive shortly afterward and end this assault, though not before Malkon has been injured. Turlough is aghast when he finds his relative has been shot and the Doctor presses him for as much information as he has on the strange circumstances of Sarn. It seems it is a long abandoned Trion colony planet, and that Turlough, a Trion, suspects some of his family were sent here after a revolution against the hereditary leading clans of his homeworld. He supposes his father died in a crash but that Malkon survived, while he himself was sent in exile to Brendan School In England, overseen by a Trion agent masquerading as a solicitor in Chancery Lane. The Master/Kamelion has meanwhile seized Peri and uses her to transport a black box into the control room of his TARDIS. It contains a miniature Master – the real thing – who has been shrunken and transformed by a disastrous experiment with his Tissue Compression Eliminator. The Master thus re-established the psychic link with Kamelion to gain the power of movement and has manoeuvred the robot to Sarn so that he can take advantage of the restorative powers of the Numismaton gas within the fire mountain. Turlough realises the imminent volcano bursts will destroy the Sarn colony so nobly uses a functioning communication unit to get in touch with Trion and plead for a rescue ship to evacuate Sarn. In doing so he abandons his own freedom. When the ship later arrives, the Sarns all depart, along with Turlough and Malkon. They have both been pardoned in an amnesty issued by the new Sarn government. The only one to remain on the planet and face the erupting volcanoes is Timanov, now sure to die, his faith in tatters. The Doctor meanwhile succeeds in weakening the Master's hold of Kamelion, and interrupts the numismaton experiment. He adds calorific gas to the numismaton surge and seemingly burns the Master alive. The Doctor also puts the terminally wounded Kamelion out of its misery. He returns to the TARDIS with a heavy heart, but with a new companion, Peri, for company. [] Cast notes Mark Strickson has also reprised the role of Turlough in the audio plays by and penned the introduction to the novel Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma (1986). Promotional photographs taken during production include a shot of Peter Davison wearing a tuxedo and holding a gun, with Nicola Bryant standing next to him in a bikini, in a parody of . [] Continuity This was the last story to feature Mark Strickson as Turlough. He returned for the Fifth Doctor's scene in . Turlough was the last male companion of the Doctor on screen until joined the TARDIS crew briefly at the end of the episode "" in 2005. Strickson has said that had he realised that the next season would involve stories consisting of two 50-minute episodes, he would not have departed from the series. He felt that Turlough was not receiving enough development because the 25-minute format necessitated more frequent cliffhangers and therefore less character development. This serial was originally intended as the for as the since his contract with the show had come to an end, hence the "death" of the character in the numismaton flames at the story's climax. As a deliberate tease for the audience, the Master's truncated final line is "Won't you even show mercy to your own -", with him apparently being killed by the gas just as he is about to reveal the true nature of his relationship to the Doctor. However, the Master reappeared in the following season's without explanation as to how he survived the flames. Script Editor cut from the explanation for the Master's survival provided by writers but the explanation is in their novelisation of the serial.) It was decided that because of the climate of , where the serial was filmed, the cast would have to alter their usual costumes. Although Peter Davison started the story wearing his cricketer outfit, for the rest of the story, he wore a different pair of trousers with question mark braces and a beige floral waistcoat. Strickson shed his usual school uniform in favour of a blue pin-stripe shirt and tan shorts with a pair of underneath. Nicola Bryant also wore a pink bikini beneath her clothes to which she stripped down for a couple of scenes, the first time a companion had been seen to wear a two-piece swimsuit since in the story . Peri's mother and her friend Mrs Van Gysegham, both mentioned in this story, appear in the 2006 audio drama . Although Kamelion dies in this story, he makes a posthumous reappearance in the audio . This is the only story in the Peter Davison era in which made no appearance as though she is briefly mentioned in episode 1. She left the TARDIS crew in the previous serial , and appears in the Fifth Doctor's regeneration sequence in following adventure, , as a hallucination.
