The Haunting of Hill House was first published in 1959 by Shirley Jackson and has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It's the story of four individuals who arrive at the notorious Hill House. This place is so frightening that people who live in the local town won't even talk about it. The group is brought together by Dr. Montague, an anthropologists and occult scholar. He rents Hill House for a few weeks in the summer to study the hauntings, and invites several people who he's heard possess psychic abilities or previous encounters with the paranormal. Two young women agree to come - the lively and charming Theodora, and the shy and naïve Eleanor. The owner of the home requires that a relative of the family must be present as part of the lease terms, so she sends her son Luke, who is the future heir of Hill House. The four form an unlikely bond as the horrors of Hill House come to life, nerves start to fray, and forces at work in the house gather to claim one of them for eternity. Why was each person motivated to come to Hill House? What parallels can be drawn between past inhabitants of the house and the current visitors? Would we spend a week in a haunted house? The Shining begins as Jack Torrance is interviewing for a position as the off-season caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, which sits in the mountains of Colorado. Some people say it was inspired by the real-life Stanley Hotel, though Stephen King says the Overlook is entirely fictional and doesn't have a real-life basis. Who's to say? Anyway, the Overlook represents a fresh start for the Torrance family, as Jack was fired from his previous job for brutally beating a student that slashed his tires. Jack has anger problems, to say the least, and is a recovering alcoholic. He really sees this job as an opportunity to rekindle things with his wife, Wendy, reconnect with his son, Danny, and focus on writing his play. Soon enough, the harsh Colorado winter sets in, the family is unable to leave the hotel grounds, and sinister things begin to happen that are centering around Danny. Danny has this unique gift that the in-season chef, Dick Halloran, calls his shine. Dick has a lesser version of this gift. Danny can have visions that seem to be premonitions, thanks to his imaginary friend, Tony, and can see and hear the hotel's ghosts, all of whom seem to have some nefarious intentions with the Torrance family. The Overlook is hungry, and Danny's shine is the perfect dinner. How big a part does destiny play in the family's life? What was Danny's first sign that the hotel's spirits were after him? Do we believe in ghosts? What do you get when you combine three acts of a tragedy, two acts of a pastoral romantic comedy, and a sprinkle of the supernatural on top for good measure? A problem play for the ages: The Winter's Tale. If it feels like we've been down this road before, it's because this late Romance borrows many of its themes from some of the great tragedies of Shakespeare's career, like Othello. Jealous husbands, chaste wives, and accusations of infidelity abound in the first half of the play. Then -- as we've seen very recently in Pericles -- we jump sixteen years into the future, following the fallout of Leontes' disastrous accusation of Hermione, the death of son Mamillius, and the banishment of the infant Perdita to discover that all may not be lost after all. This smash-cut tonal shift that leads us from wintry Sicilia to summer-time Bohemia and the introduction of a long-lost daughter and a marriage crisis that brings the destroyed family back together again, possibly with a little help from the gods, perhaps (shades of Macbeth, anyone?) But unlike Othello, Leontes is given this second chance to prove himself to his family and friends after the damage has been done because, unlike hero Pericles, Leontes has a lot of prove. And despite the magical overtones of the final climactic reunion, there is no shade thrown on witches here, unlike the Weird Sisters that haunt Macbeth. So what is Shakespeare playing at, mixing these old tropes to new effect? That's the focus of today's episode -- we hope you'll enjoy! Ancient Bickerings Who is the worst husband in all of Shakespeare? Notes: Reddit AITA post (which -- shockingly -- has been marked "No A-holes Here", which only goes to show that a) men are not okay and b) Reddit is the asshole of the internet.) We've got Andy Rahden on the show today. He's the CEO of a children's supplemental education company, Shmoop - which is actually a Yiddish term that means to gain progress in or move forward. He's an engineer by training and has a great career in tech, design, and education. He talks about what he's seeing at founder and CEO of Shmoop as well as the state of education today.  Our three do or die takeaways for dads covered in this episode are: Be careful labelling your child, especially around school related things like grades and test scores. Avoid as much as possible saying things like, “Jacob is my smart kid, he does really well in school.” or “Jane got a high score on her test, she's an A+ student.” Focus on outcomes and behavior, not labeling your kids.  Learn how to ask good questions to your kids. Andy's Shmoop Heartbeat product randomizes through hundreds of questions to get a pulse on a child's current state of being. As dads, we need to get comfortable asking questions. If nothing else, just ask “Why?” Kids are amazing at asking that simple but powerful question, we can be too. Dads too often fail ignorantly by asking passive questions like, “You good?” while we hold a thumbs up and hope our child just says “Good” so we can move on. Instead ask more open ended questions like, “How are you?” wait for them to reply, then ask “Why do you feel that way?” - that's a good way to start. Be intentional with the time you have. Andy shared how limited his time can be as a CEO and on several boards. Being intentional and maximizing the time you do have is hugely important, almost as much as increasing the amount of time you have with your children. Show notes:https://www.shmoop.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/andyrahden/Music by DJ Quads

Another one of Shakespeare's problem plays, All's Well That Ends Well doesn't really, well... end well. It's a play deeply concerned about gender norms, sex, and lies, with some interesting characters who - like those in other problem plays - defy the typical conventions we usually associate with Shakespeare's better known figures. We talk about these themes and the characters that lay trapped within them, in this episode! Notes: As always, the Folger accompanying essay, "All's Well That Ends Well: A Modern Perspective" is a good resource for digging into some of the thornier issues of this play. The Shmoop guide ain't half bad either! The BBC version really does rip off the baroque and other famous painters shot-for-shot at times - well worth checking out for that alone! The film Aidan mentions in the outro is definitely Ran by Akira Kurosawa. not Rain, which is a lesser known film that doesn't sound nearly as good. Ancient Bickerings: It's a simple question for this one: is all well at the end of the play? Lindsay says no, Aidan says yes. Aidan is wrong.

Help For Your Dyslexic Child:  1. https://learningally.org/  ($12/month  Audiobooks)-  Learning Ally provides kids with thousands of audible books and even a few popular textbooks!  Depending on the book, it will highlight sentences for the child and allows the kid to learn through listening comprehension.  This is a game-changer for children who need to read novels for English class.   2. https://snapandread.com/  ($3.99/month reads computer text)-  If you have a child that has all their new homework or curriculum given to them online or on a computer screen, then Snap and Read might be an excellent fit for you.   This website reads aloud any words that might appear on your computer screen!   3. https://www.shmoop.com/  (FREE Gives chapter summaries for popular books, test prep, math drills, & essay writing help.)  Shmoop is free and provides math drills for extra help with math practice, helps your child write better essays with writing guides, and I love that this website gives practical main idea summaries of popular books. Unlike Cliff Notes, these summaries provide main points without giving away too much information.  My dyslexic child reads the outline of a chapter from Shmoop, and then audio listens to the chapter afterward.  The summaries provide him with enough structure to look for main points but don't give away all the details. In other words, he still has to read the book, but Schmoop gives him enough information to help him focus on the main ideas.   Schmoop improves his reading comprehension but does not do all the work for him. 4. https://ttsreader.com/  (Free- highlights text, reads aloud, and converts speech to MP3 format)-  TTSReader Text to Speech Reader reads files aloud and saves them as MP3 files. How does my son use it?  He uses this website to aid in editing his OWN writing.   He takes an essay or paragraph he has written for school and pastes it to the site.  The website then reads his work aloud back to him while highlighting the text.  This allows my son to hear his writing aloud, and he can listen for grammatical errors or weird sentence structures.  He then can edit his writing with more accuracy. 5. Livescribe.com (Prices Vary- $100 Notetaking help)  Livescribe is best for older children or even college students.   These are special smartpens that can record voice while you write, or take recorded notes and accurately transcribe the information.   This technology is impressive and you have to check out the website to understand. Livescribe takes notetaking to a whole new level. Ask your teacher for:   • Extra time to do the work • Video chats where directions are verbalized rather than read • Oral testing or video testing on things that need to be assessed  • Copies of the teacher's notes • A reduced workload or modified assignments • As the teacher to honor content quality over spelling/grammar • Hands-on learning if possible, like projects instead of worksheets • Can your child record answers orally and submit assignments in MP3 format or video? • Ask for examples of correct and completed work as examples of what the teacher wants and expects. There are also things that you can do at home to help make your child more successful.   These things include: • Post your child's daily schedule.  Dyslexic children do better with a visual plan.  Don't just tell them what needs to be done.  SHOW them visually. • Give your child a ruler and have them read with it.  This aids in reading a lot! • Use large-print text or enlarge their homework.  The smaller the print, the harder it will be to read. • Help them organize their work • Arrange the work from easiest to hardest.  Do the “easy” things first! • Help them read instructions, so they know what is expected. • Break up large assignments into smaller steps.   • Eliminate distractions in the area where they are expected to focus on school work.  For example, no bed, no tv, no iPod, lousy lighting, lousy noise level, etc.) Your child wants to be successful!  Most dyslexic children want to learn and want to show off their unique academic talents!  With the right resources, your child can do that!  School at home doesn't have to be a set-back or another frustration.  You and your child can do this!

Mike Soldan is the Chief Experience Officer at Shmoop, leading Engineering, Product and Content; this is a very new and different way to create the CXO platform, and it's a game changer. Mike and I talk about how he organizes his team to deliver value for customers and employees, and is taking a human-centered-design approach at Schmoop creating quality products for students and schools across the country. We also talk about the connectivity of CX and Agile teams, and the importance of integration. Shmoop is an EdTech company, so Mike and I also cover how the industry has been impacted due to COVID, and how it is changing the education landscape forever. A lot more in this insight-packed episode that can't be missed. It's one of my favorite shows. Such an all-star CXO and an amazing conversation that will no doubt leave you with a bunch of take-aways as you think about customer experience and driving change in 2021!

For this episode I go back to a childhood song and go through Aerosmith's best album Toys in the Attic. A sexually charged album with psychedelic undertones. Toys in the Attic is punctuated by Sweet Emotion, Adam's Apple, and the Y for today's episode, Walk This Way. There are some great podcast questions so feel free to reach out on Instagram @jd4unc and answer those. You will get a shout out in the next episode. The vocals and guitar carried this album up the charts. Hope everyone has a great week and enjoy this episode. 1 John 5 John, The Elder has another letter so listen up! You Gotta Have Faith And…more from the speaker: anyone who believes that Jesus is the Messiah is a child of God. That means if you love God, then you have to love his children (i.e., other believers), too. Oh, and you also have to obey his commandments. But no worries, says the author; his commandments are pretty simple: believe in Jesus and love other people. Having faith in these things is like a victory over the evil powers of the not-great world. It's like shining a light in the darkness. Flashlights ready. The speaker tells us that Jesus came "by water and blood." That's just referring to Jesus' baptism (water) and death (blood). He continues: three things tell us the truth about Jesus: the water (baptism), the blood (his death), and the Spirit (or, as you might better know it, the Holy Spirit). God has told the world all about Jesus, and that outranks anything ordinary people have to say about him. Lesson: go right to the source. But how do you know what God has told the world? Well, you have faith. Love you people! Thanks The Ryrie Bible, Shmoop and Savae!

Before hopping aboard the Shmoop train, Andy was the Vice President of the Pluralsight Creative, Design, and Engineering business unit. Armed with his passion for democratizing education, Andy built teams at Pluralsight from the ground up to forge strategic partnerships and create a world-class customer experience. Since his early days as a Mechanical Engineer at Baker Hughes, Andy has always enjoyed solving problems, from mechanical stress tests to Marvel-worthy teams of super-employees. Before Pluralsight, Andy made his way as an all-rounder at Autodesk, where he directed global teams through all elements of improving customer experience. He has also worked for the largest SolidWorks reseller, where he provided in-person training, worked with customers on implementation, and provided guidance to companies transforming their design process. Andy Rahden and Mike Soldan, Shmoop's Chief Experience Officer are now focused on bringing the latest technology to the K-12 learning space to ease the stress of the learning environment.  Andy couldn't be more excited about progressing, at lighting speed, what Shmoop's founders Ellen and David Siminoff started over a decade ago. During this episode, Andy and I discuss: Andy's career before he was the CEO of Shmoop and how his background in engineering and design has led him to what he is doing now. How the people Andy has worked with have influenced how he thinks about making decisions at a professional level The meaning of the word ‘Shmoop' and how it applies to the concept of what Shmoop does as a company The valuable tools Shmoop provides  for teachers and students for grades 6-12 Andy's observations about  school closures due to COVID-19 and Shmoop  The free learning Shmoop has provided to over 3 million students across the country that were not previously customers of Shmoop Why there is a drastic difference between where students live and what kind of education they receive Why founders at Shmoop wanted to use a form of engagement rather than the traditional methodology early on   How they use humor and a little bit of flair in their content to increase engagement. “Even when you are learning E = MC squared” How Shmoop is able to provide a tool to access the students' minds for teachers that are working with them Shmoop's new technology called Shmoop Heartbeat that is expected to release before the 2021 school year.  Welcome Listeners! We are reading...2 Corinthians: Chapter 2 Summary   The Painful Visit Okay, the real reason that Paul cancelled his visit to Corinth is because he didn't want to have another "painful visit." At least that's what happened the last time he stopped in Corinth. Ouch.Apparently, there was some kind of disagreement between Paul and a male member of the Corinthian congregation. Paul doesn't go into details (we're guessing the Corinthian gossip mill has already made this news known). He also doesn't name his opponent, so we'll just call him the Offending Brother. We don't know what happened, but we do know that what was really upsetting about the whole incident was that the Corinthians ended up siding with the Offending Brother instead of Paul. How rude!Paul cancelled his travel plans and did what he does best—he wrote a letter. This letter made him super sad though and he cried a ton while writing it. The Tears Did It! But—good news—the letter worked. Paul hears that the Corinthians have kicked the Offending Brother out of the church.Okay, but now, Paul tells them they should work on bringing him back into the church (wait, what?). Oh, you know. Forgiveness and all that jazz.Paul heard all this news first hand from his friend, Titus (who had been to visit Corinth). Needless to say, this made Paul very, very happy. But really, this is all God's handiwork. He has led Paul and his fellow apostles on a victory march through the streets. God loves a parade, apparently.Paul and his cohorts aren't like some apostles who are really just "peddlers of God's word." They're sincere and truthful. They come from God. Now that's a solid resume. Thanks to Shmoop.com

Good morning church! Join us as we have our weekly Bible study! Romans Chapter 7. Paul goes on to talk more about the role of Jewish law. He says that the law only applies to people who are alive, but that Christians are dead to the world and dead to the law. Thus, they don't have to obey all those fussy rules anymore. Sweet! It's kind of like when a man and woman get married—they have to stay faithful to each other. But if the husband dies, all bets are off. Now the wife can remarry and it's a-okay with everyone. Plus, she gets double wedding presents. Basically, Paul's saying that because of Jesus, Jewish law is dead. Christians have remarried and belong with God now. He's their dream guy. Before all that, we were slaves to the law and sin, but now we're free to run barefoot in a meadow with the Holy Spirit. How exhilarating. Now, wait just a second, Paul… it sounds like you're saying Jewish law is sinful. Oh no, Paul explains. You're misunderstanding!  The law isn't sinful, but it does point out all kinds of sin to us… making that sin look oh-so delicious. See, if no one had ever said, "Don't steal stuff," would we have even thought of stealing? Um, Paul, you're losing us. Look, the law is good, Paul says. Don't get him wrong. It's doing its best, but really it can't hold a candle to the power of sin. Ooooh, what's the power of sin? Well, it just means that sin has major pull over people. We may try to follow the law and do good things, but we just keep getting drawn back towards doing bad things. Blame it on the sin. See, we're just weak, sad little mortal beings who can't help but do bad things. And sin usually looks pretty good to us. But the good news is, there's someone who can get us off this crazy merry-go-round of sin. You guessed it—it's Jesus! It's always Jesus. Thanks to Shmoop.com

Welcome church! We have set aside some time on Sunday morning for Bible study, prayer and reading inspirational stories. Join us! Today we are reading Romans 6. "Okay, so it's cool to sin, right? After all, Jesus did die to erase our sins, so we can just let him work all that out after we get done coveting our neighbor's wife over here…Um, no, Paul says (and probably rolls his eyes). Look, he explains, if you're baptized in Christ, then you're baptized in his death. Wait, what? Let's break it down: when you're baptized, you symbolically die and are reborn as a new person. That's because Jesus died and rose again. When you die, you leave all your sin behind. Now, you're fresh and new and super holy. Very nice. But wait… you still might want to sin because people kind of love sinning.Paul tells Christians that they need to keep presenting themselves as this new person. Don't go back to being the old person you were. Don't be a slave to sin. Free at last!Okay, but since Jesus kind of does away with Jewish law and not everyone has to follow it, isn't sinning actually kind of fine? Come on, guys, Paul says. This time he's really rolling his eyes. You can only pick one—either you want to serve sin or serve God. You can't do both. Besides, what has sin ever gotten you? A nice car? A good job? A hot girlfriend?Okay, but did sin ever get you eternal life with God? Didn't think so. Oh, friends, Paul says, "the wages of sin is death." Why work hard to earn death when God is giving out eternal life for free through Jesus? Act now… even though supplies are unlimited". Thanks to Shmoop.com

Welcome Church! We are here every Sunday to read the Bible, tell personal stories and pray together because when two or more are gathered.....In a non-judgemental down to earth format. God bless you every one! Romans 2 Okay, but before we get all judgmental about others (wait, didn't Paul just do that?), there's one important thing to remember. When you pass judgment on someone else, that makes you just as bad as them. Wait, what?Oh no, you say. That can't be right. I totally know that God hates all these things, so it's fine for me to judge the people doing them, right?Wrong, Paul says. (Nice try though.)When you judge someone else, it's like you're saying you've never done anything bad. We all know that's not true. (Remember the time you stole that rainbow-colored eraser in third grade? Yeah, Shmoop knows about that.)Basically, the idea is that you shouldn't call other people out for doing something wrong, when you're doing stuff wrong, too. But judging is so fun…Look, God is a kind and gentle guy. He's trying to help you be kind and gentle, too. But if you spend all your time getting angry about what other people are doing, then he can't really make a dent in that. Anger is a tough armor to crack. And once you've filled your heart up with anger, God's gonna have to give that right back to you on Judgment Day. Sorry, angry hearts, it's not looking good for you.God rewards people who do good and punishes those who do bad. It's a pretty simple formula.

Audio File:  Download MP3Transcript: An Interview with Ellen Siminoff President and CEO, Shmoop University Date: June 1, 2009 Ellen Siminoff: Shmoop University Lucy Sanders: Hi, this is Lucy Sanders. I'm the CEO of the National Center for Women & Information Technology, or NCWIT, and this is one of a continuing series of interviews that we're doing with really just outstanding women who have started IT companies. With me is Larry Nelson from W3W3.com. Hi, Larry and welcome. Larry Nelson: I am so happy to be here. This is going to be a very interesting interview. As we get into it Ellen is going to see that there's some similarities between us. Lucy: Well, that's a pretty scary thought. Larry: Yeah, it is; isn't it? Lucy: Ellen, run. Today we are interviewing Ellen Siminoff, and she is the President and CEO of Shmoop University. Now, this site is something that our listeners really must go and see. They have a great mission. Shmoop is an education Website, and their goal is to make everyone lovers of literature, history and poetry. I went there last night and started looking around, and I really like the idea of their Book Club where they review books and even have questions for teachers to use with books, and I thought it was really fascinating that people creating their content, master's degree students and Ph.D. students, really looking for great original and creative content to help students and teachers. I found a little humor on the site as well, so it really cracked me up. Shmoop guarantees better grades. There was an asterisk next to it, and it said: "not an actual guarantee." Anyway, welcome, Ellen, we're really happy to have you for this interview. Ellen Siminoff: Thanks for the great review of this site. That was great. Lucy: Well, we're really happy to have you and before we get into the entrepreneur questions, I really wanted to know how you came up with the name, "Shmoop," and what's going on with the company. Ellen: Well, I started the company with my husband. Shmoop is a Yiddish term for trying to move something forward a little bit. So, my husband's grandmother always used to say to him, "Shmoop this, shmoop that" so we're trying to move education and learning forward a little bit. Larry: Shmoop, I love it. Lucy: I love it. Down in Louisiana we used to say we were carrying somebody from here to there, even though you're actually driving them. Now, we can say we shmoop around. Larry: I'm for shmooping. Lucy: I'm for shmooping. Well so, Ellen, how did you first get into technology? You are using technology in the delivery of your company, obviously, and so our listeners would really like to know what you're looking at as particularly interesting technologies today. Ellen: I got into technology because I was really interested in media, and media became very important to technology. I started a different company with my husband many, many years ago. It was about 18 years ago, and we were distributing television programming in eastern Europe and that made me love the media industry. Then I went to the Los Angeles Times, and I started running their online Classifieds. This was really early. It was like 1994 when the Internet, and if you remember Prodigy and CompuServe and AOL were all fighting it out. I started realizing that technology could be used to deliver media in a really interesting way. Larry: Wow, that's terrific. Remember, I warned you up front that there's something that we have in common. First of all, on your Website there's so many things I like about your Website, but I am also, like you, a lover of chocolate. Ellen: All right. Larry: I'm a cheese head. I used to live in Wisconsin. Ellen: All right. Larry: And I still struggle with golf, so I think that's enough similarities, right? Ellen: Those are great similarities, but have you been shot? Larry: No, but I almost shot my dad when we were hunting once. Lucy: Have you been shot? I'm sure there's more to that story. Larry: It's on the Website. Lucy: Oh, I better go look at that part of it. Well so, Ellen, I was sitting here thinking about technology today. Do you see any particular technologies on the horizon that you think are pretty interesting? Ellen: I'm a big lover of the Kindle. I think the approach Amazon and, obviously, some others in that space have taken about taking a text book and providing a much easier way for students to get their information. I think it's fabulous. I think, first of all, we don't need to have orthopedic problems from carrying around back packs loaded with books, and second, text books are really expensive. They has to be a less expensive way to deliver the same amount of material, so I'm really excited about that one. Larry: Yeah, I am, too. Now that they've got the new, big one, I like that even more. Ellen: As I get older, the bigger print would be fine. Lucy: I see them on planes more and more now. Ellen: Yes, I actually always bring mine every time I travel because, why lug a book around? Larry: Right, you bet. Well, I get the part about technology and all, but why are you an entrepreneur, and what is it about you that makes the entrepreneur part of you tick? Ellen: Well, I think entrepreneurs are people who would be just dreadful employees... because it's chosen for us. For me, I have always sort of gone with smaller companies that I like the people and the idea. When I started Yahoo, we were just a handful of folks, and we thought we were changing the world. Hopefully, we did to some extent. I started up Fischer Frontier which subsequently became the largest search engine marketing firm when it was just a couple of guys with a really neat math algorithm. Shmoop, my husband and I came up with in our back yard. So, for me it's about the idea and the people and the excitement of creating it. The other benefit of being an entrepreneur is you have very little bureaucracy. When a decision needs to be made, you sort of look around at your four or five key people and you resolve it quickly, and that's exciting for me. Lucy: So, along your path you're a serial entrepreneur and you've had a lot of success along your path, who has influenced or supported you? Who are your role models? Ellen: Well, if it hasn't become clear, my husband has been really supportive which I think is great. We've worked together a number of times, and he's pushed me more than I probably would have pushed myself. I have phenomenal parents who basically told me dream big and we're your number one fans, whatever you want to do. So, they've been great, and I've had some terrific teachers along the way. Back to the Wisconsin thing, I had a great eighth grade teacher at Mapledale Elementary School who told me, "You might be pretty smart. Think about what you might want to do in life". I was in eighth grade, and I still remember that conversation. Lucy: Isn't it amazing that you do? That kind of influence on young people by teachers, it really sticks. Ellen: It's amazing. We actually have a page on Shmoop, a teachers' page, that we literally went to the Ph.D.s and Masters I alluded to before and all of us here at the office have said, "So which teacher influenced you the most?" We wound up with this great list of our favorite teachers and how they impacted our lives. And I think that every person who's reasonably successful can identify one of the teachers who made a big difference to them. Larry: Oh, that's fantastic. You know, you mentioned you and your husband. My wife and I, we've started 12 different companies over the years, and it's an extra little plus that as an entrepreneur you can do that. Ellen: That's great. That's inspirational. We have a few more to go. Larry: Well, OK. I'm just a kid, but... Ellen, what is the toughest thing that you have ever had to do in your career? Ellen: Oh, I think the toughest thing anyone has to do is ask someone to leave a company when that person is doing a good job, but they're somehow... morals or conduct or behavior goes against what you want your company to do. I think any CEO or hiring person will tell you, that's the hardest call you ever have to make. Lucy: And, in fact, I think we've done about 50 of these interviews, and that comes up over and over and over again, I think, along with having to leave a company you don't want to leave. Ellen: Yeah, transitions are very hard. I think transitions in life are very hard, and transitions in companies are very hard. The reality is, there's a certain number of years when you're productive to a company, and even if you're doing a good job, you reach a certain comfort level, and sometimes it makes sense to bring in some fresh blood. Lucy: I think that's right, if for no other reason that your network's been tapped out, or something else, that other people can bring in new thinking. So, this gets us into our next question. I think this notion that transitions are hard is really insightful. What other things would you tell a young person or anybody about entrepreneurship, and what kinds of advice would give them? Ellen: I think there's two things I would tell someone. The first is a practical thing, which is, do something you love, and do it with people you love or like, and all good things will come from that. I can't tell you the number of people who turn down great opportunities because their friends told them it was a bad idea, or it didn't fit in the sort of boxes that they had been taught in business school about how to evaluate an idea, or someone told them the business is going to be bad. So, you've got to, a lot of times, go with your instincts, and go with the businesses that make sense to you, and that you doing it, and with people you like, and then I would bet the percentages are in your favor. The second idea I would have for someone is a little less practical, but more of a gut instinct thing, and that is, don't worry so much. I think if you work hard, and you get a little bit lucky, and your timing is good, you will find good opportunities. If I had known how much fun I would have had doing different things, I wouldn't have worried so much along the way. Larry: Wow. Lucy: Is there a Yiddish word for, "Don't worry so much?" Ellen: No, I don't know that one, but I'll have to call my dad. Lucy: I think it could lead to a new company name. Ellen: I always think of, hakuna matata, right? Lucy: Yes, that's right. Exactly. But, I think you're right. Ellen: It's not Yiddish, but it should be. Larry: You got it. Lucy: It probably should be. Larry: Well, I've got to ask another question here that pertains to everything we've talked about so far, but we're now looking at you. What are some personal characteristics that make you a successful entrepreneur? Ellen: I think it's relentlessness, right? I think anybody's who's willing to face in the Internet world zero wages, zero revenue, you know, and a blank sheet of paper, I think yes, you have to have a certain passion, and relentlessness, and drive, and be internally focused, that you don't need someone every day telling you, "This is a great idea. You're going to do great." You've got to just have it from within and be laser-focused on executing. Lucy: I'm just writing this down. I mean, I think the laser focus is exactly right, and the relentlessness, you know, we've heard before, as well. Some people have said even, "stubborn," or... Ellen: I don't know that I would necessarily always write stubborn, because there's a fine line between being crazy and being brilliant. Lucy: That's true. Ellen: Most of the people will tell you that their original idea was not always their final idea, so you need to have a balance of having great conviction in what your doing, but being flexible with what the environment is telling you. Lucy: So, you had a very successful career starting companies, and obviously when you start a company, I'm sure you put everything into it, and give it your all, and people often want to know, well, how then do you balance that with a personal life, if, in fact, balance really exists? Ellen: Oh, I believe in balance. I think you set limits. I think that working smart is a lot better than working every hour of every day. I think being efficient matters. I've seen people take so much time to do something, where that could be done a lot quicker, and I sometimes think when you have more things to do, you're more focused about the things you have to get done. In terms of balance, you just have to. Nobody goes to their grave saying, "I wish I would have worked harder." Lucy: Absolutely. Ellen: I have a great family. I run half-marathons. I have deadly, struggling golf game, and I think the Spectaculars are the most fun, coolest organization on earth. So, you've got to get out there and do other thing, and I think you have a better approach to work when you do. Larry: That's some excellent advice. Gaining balance, or whatever that is, is one of the most difficult thing for new entrepreneurs, but they've got to somehow, as time goes along, really build that balance into their life. Ellen: Oh, you're so right. And you've gone on with your life, so it's especially... I do know couples where one of them doesn't like to come home and talk about work or the other doesn't. We just incorporate it in our lives. Lucy: There's an integration process there, I think. Ellen: Yeah. But at the same point, there are points, you know, my husband... you know, sometimes people are amazed that they'll say something to Dave, and he'll say, "Well, I don't know about this, that's in Ellen's area." And they think that all we do 100 percent of the time is only talk our business stuff, and there are sometimes many days we don't even discuss anything "businessy." Lucy: Well, that's so healthy, and also, you find things that way. Sometimes you find things when you just open up like that, that relate to the business that you never would have seen if you were just working all the time. So, that's very powerful. So, Ellen, you've achieved a lot, and we like to find out from the people we interview what's next for you. You obviously have a new company and so you'll probably be putting a lot of time into that, but anything else you'd like to share, either what's next for you, or what's next for Shmoop? Ellen: Well, I think for Shmoop, I think we've done a really good job on lit., and history and poetry. We're going to do more in civics and get some of the math and sciences up there, because I think it's really important to be able to read, write, and do arithmetic. So, we've got to add the third stool. Lucy: Well, we'd really like to talk about computing. Ellen: Oh, wow, that would be great! Lucy: Well, thank you so much. I just love your site. Larry: I love your site, and I just want to say this one thing. Lucy referred to this, but she buried it a little bit. Right off of your Website, one headline there that really caught my attention said, "Shmoop wants to make you a better lover." Lucy: Of literature. Larry: Well, then, in parenths. Lucy: Oh. Larry: "Of literature, history, poetry, and writing. I'm just getting in the complete line." Lucy: Oh, OK. Ellen: Well, you know, if you just become a better lover, that'd be OK, too, but we'd like you to like lit., history, and poetry. Larry: Oh, a fellow cheese head for sure. Thank you so much, Ellen, for joining us today. Ellen: My pleasure. Thank you for having me. Larry: And by the way, you listeners out there, make sure you pass this interview on to others that you know would be interested, and they can find the entire thing, and download it at any time at ncwit.org, as well as w3w3.com.
