Artistic athletes often push their flexibility to the limit, both for competitive and aesthetic reasons. Nowhere are limits tested more than in rhythmic gymnastics where hypermobility tends to be the norm. Vita Bachman, former international Ukrainian rhythmic gymnast and now a highly respected coach, speaks openly with Bendy Bodies about her experience in the world of rhythmic gymnastics, both as an athlete and as a coach. Vita discusses how the sport has changed since she competed, and what factors influence how she coaches today. She discusses the pitfall in “chasing the points” of competitive rhythmic gymnastics, and why she continually seeks out the best methods for training her students even when these methods differ from what she was taught as a competitor. Living with her own career-related medical problems, Vita strives to be a coach that trains competitive but healthy athletes, both physically and mentally. She shares the hopes she has for the future of rhythmic gymnastics, as well as the hurdles she finds in trying to change certain aspects. She discusses her concerns with social media, confides what she'd like parents to know when shepherding their children through extreme stretching, and shares her own approach to training flexibility in a long-term, healthier way A rare, inside look at one of the most demanding sports for bendy bodies out there! #rhythmicgymnastics #rhythmicgymnasts #vitabachman #beyondlimitsrg #hypermobility #overstretching #bodiesinmotion #hypermobilitymd #jennifermilner #oversplits #safestretching #bendybodies #bendybodiespodcast #hypermobile Her website is www.beyondlimitsrg.com

Both Emily & Alannah tell us about their different journey into the sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics and why it is a sport that needs to be talked about more in Australia. We also learn about how concussion is a possibility in the sport, just how strenuous that training routines are in the lead up to an Olympic Games as well as all the finer aspects of the technical side of the sport and just what on earth a koala has to do with their competition. Added to this a large dose of nicknames, ABBA and perhaps the most philosophical answers you will ever hear, this is one fun and entertaining chat you won't want to miss!

On Episode 42 we are joined by Olga Karmansky. Olympian, world champion, gymnast, contortionist, and a beloved Prime member. Olga was born in the Soviet Union in 1989 and moved to Brooklyn with her family at 3 years old. She quickly found a love for rhythmic gymnastics at a young age and at 14 started to pursue higher ranks. Making it to the US National Team, a world championship, becoming an olympic alternate in 2004 for the US. And ultimately retiring by age 19, in 2006. For those that don't know Rhythmic Gymnastics is an olympic sport that originated in Eastern Europe. After her retirement Olga pursued other artistic avenues and did feature in Pippin on Broadway (2009), and eventually getting into contortion and teaching flexibility. And after yearning of dedicating herself to contortion and gymnastics she added CrossFit to the list. She found herself leaning out and adding strength to her repertoire of flexibility. And that's what got her here, with us! Enjoy and leave a review!

This episode takes a look at the (for some of you, new) sport of rhythmic gymnastics in India as well as around the world. In addition to the basics of the sport and the growth of it around the world, our guest, Meghana, dives deeper into the motivation that it took to work on being the best in India. As a sport that is not given much spotlight in India (it is huge in other parts of the world) Meghana speaks about the looniness that was felt as she would go and train with just her mom watching. This is something many of you athletes can relate to. That massive amount of motivation that Meghana needed and the clear picture of her vision that she had was what made it possible for her to become a pioneer in the sport in a country that is second most populated. This motivation and vision of your goal is something many of you can relate to. So whether or not you know anything about rhythmic gymnastics, I encourage you to give this interview with Meghana a listen. Thank you and enjoy! Better Than Yesterday, with Osher Günsberg

My guest today is Danielle Prince. On Instagram she’s @danniprince, follow her there and let her know that you heard her here. Danielle is a Commonwealth Games and Olympic Rhythmic Gymnast. In her words - rhythmic gymnastics is the absolute fusion between athleticism and art. It is the sport that is designed to make the impossible look easy. And Danielle’s story is one of how much time, effort, focus, and dedication it takes to do just that, to make the impossible look easy. Spoiler alert - relentless focus, practice and repetition. But I’ll let her describe it. Because there are no shortcuts to mastery. Danielle has an incredible athletic career, she’s made history as the first female gymnast to represent Australia at 3 consecutive Commonwealth Games, and has represented the country as the only Rhythmic gymnast selected to get to the Olympics in Rio. Danielle not only works with the Layne Beachley foundation, but Danni has developed her own scholarship to nurture young athletes to continue to strive to be their best. And in this conversation, you can hear how she not only deals with the incredible successes that she’s had in her career, but also the times she missed the podium - which, let’s be honest will happen more to an athlete than not. This is an emotional conversation. Twice while Danni was telling me her story I started to cry. Her grace and dignity in describing how even though she missed out on the athletic goal she’d set for her self, she emerged as a victor from a competition that she didn’t succeed at - it’s one that moved me and I’m certain will move you. It’s the first time I”ve met someone who’s retiring at 25 from the thing they’ve done their entire life. And so I was fascinated to hear how someone who’s done nothing but dedicates their every waking second to a particular outcome now changes course and pursues something else. You may never twirl a ribbon while doing a reverse scissor leap, however, what Danni’s been through and the lessons she has to tell you today will change the way you look at what you stand to win even when you look at the scoreboard it says that you have lost. She’s a remarkable young woman, find her on Instagram @danniprince and wish her a happy birthday on Tuesday - and enjoy this conversation with Danielle Prince.
