#231 Outliers: Harvey Firestone – Men and Rubber

Most people fear a $43 million debt. Harvey Firestone called it “invigorating.” When his company faced collapse in 1920 and his executives panicked, Firestone seized control. He fired the sales manager, slashed prices 25%, and personally ran the sales department. It worked—not because he managed through fear, but through clarity.   Firestone was the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company—an outsider who built one of America's iconic industrial empires by doing the opposite of what everyone else did. This episode isn't about tires. It's about how Firestone quietly built one of the great businesses of the 20th century by asking two deceptively simple questions: Is it necessary? Can it be simplified?  This episode breaks down the invisible principles behind Firestone's success: positioning over talent, inputs over outcomes, discipline over drama. If you lead a team or simply want to lead yourself better, this story is a masterclass in building enduring advantages.   This episode is for informational purposes only and is based on Men and Rubber: The Story of Business by Harvey Firestone.  Check out highlights from these books in our repository, and find key lessons from Firestone here—https://fs.blog/knowledge-project-podcast/outliers-harvey-firestone/ (03:00) PART 1: The Best Businessman I Ever Knew(06:50) The Vanilla Extract Lesson(10:23) When Premium Doesn't Matter (12:05) PART 2: Right Beneath the Wheels(14:21) The Back of an Envelope(16:36) If Two of Us Stay, Neither Makes Money(18:39) Betting on what Doesn't Change(20:55) The Accidental Breakfast(24:53) The Third Option (28:19) PART 3: The Innovators Dilemma: Pneumatic Tires(32:24) The Ford Connection: A Partnership of Outsiders(35:23) Navigating the Crisis(37:17) The Underdog's Advantage(39:24) The Million Dollar Milestone(43:10) Weathering the Panic of 1907(45:55) The Simplicity Imperative (51:25) PART 4: The Ship-by-Truck Revolution(54:31) The Boom That Hid Everything(56:11) The 25% Solution(01:01:42) Cutting to the Bone (01:04:25) PART 5: Why He Never Stopped(01:06:54) The Human Element(01:08:09) The Legacy (01:10:05) Reflections, afterthoughts, and lessons Upgrade—If you want to hear my thoughts and reflections at the end of all episodes, join our membership: fs.blog/membership and get your own private feed. Roman Buhler never thought he'd see the day where the 'Left' would so actively try to undermine this nation through the packing of the Supreme Court. A constitutional amendment, presented with a Democrat helping the coalition, to say the the Supreme Court will consist with 9 justices. Roman looks behind the left wing members of Congress; involving the pro-abortion crowd, the teachers unions, folks who want to take away 2nd Amendment rights, the quota civil rights crowd wanting racial quotas, and Wall Street to empower regulators to enrich Green New Deal policies, and the most dangerous of all the Democrat election lawyers that want to get rid of the Electoral College. Young voters are key. Roman packs his coalition with the Gen Z folks that are strongly engaged to join Roman's coalition to initiate this new constitutional amendment. "We need another revolution", Roman said. In Trump's 2017 inauguration, Donald Trump said "it's time to transfer power out of Washington and back to the states and the people." "Laws must be made by elected officials" he said, "not by administrative decree. That would be the NEXT amendment."Check out MadisonCoalition.org or 202-255-5000“Keep 9” Is the Solution ~ Let's Stop Dem Court Packing!!!on the GrassRoots TruthCast with Gene ValentinoORIGINAL MEDIA SOURCE(S):‣ Originally Recorded on May 13, 2025‣ GrassRoots TruthCast: Season 2, Episode 284‣ Image courtesy of: GeneValentino.com➡️ Join the Conversation: https://GeneValentino.com➡️ WMXI Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/NewsRadio981➡️ More WMXI Interviews: https://genevalentino.com/wmxi-interviews/➡️ More GrassRoots TruthCast Episodes: https://genevalentino.com/grassroots-truthcast-with-gene-valentino/➡️ More Broadcasts with Gene as the Guest: https://genevalentino.com/america-beyond-the-noise/ ➡️ More About Gene Valentino: https://genevalentino.com/about-gene-valentino/

Snapdrop: The Ultimate Cross-Platform File Sharing Solution

    TPF's Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2025 3:27

In today's interconnected world, transferring files between devices should be seamless and efficient. Enter Snapdrop—a free, open-source, web-based tool that revolutionizes the way we share files across different platforms. What Is Snapdrop?Snapdrop is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file transfer service that allows users to send files between devices connected to the same local network. Inspired by Apple's AirDrop, Snapdrop operates entirely within your browser, eliminating the need for additional applications or accounts. Whether you're using Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS, Snapdrop ensures effortless file sharing across all major operating systems.Key Features1. Cross-Platform CompatibilitySnapdrop's standout feature is its cross-platform functionality. Unlike AirDrop, which is exclusive to Apple devices, Snapdrop bridges the gap between various operating systems. Users can seamlessly transfer files between Android phones, iPhones, Windows PCs, Macs, and Linux systems without compatibility issues.2. No Installation RequiredOne of Snapdrop's most appealing aspects is its simplicity. There's no need to install any software or create an account. Users can initiate file transfers by visiting Snapdrop.world on their devices. This web-based approach ensures that sharing files is just a few clicks away.3. Real-Time Peer-to-Peer TransfersSnapdrop utilizes WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) technology to establish direct connections between devices. This peer-to-peer method means that files are transferred directly from sender to receiver without passing through intermediate servers, ensuring faster transfers and enhanced privacy.4. End-to-End EncryptionSecurity is paramount when sharing files. Snapdrop employs end-to-end encryption, ensuring that files are encrypted on the sender's device and remain encrypted until they reach the recipient. This approach safeguards against potential eavesdropping or data breaches during transmission.5. Open Source and FreeAs an open-source project, Snapdrop's source code is publicly available, allowing the community to review, contribute, and ensure its integrity. Additionally, Snapdrop is entirely free to use, making it an accessible solution for individuals and organizations alike. How to Use SnapdropUsing Snapdrop is straightforward:Connect Devices to the Same Network: Ensure that both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.Open Snapdrop on Both Devices: Navigate to Snapdrop. world on each device using a modern web browser.Initiate File Transfer: On the sender's device, click on the recipient's device icon displayed on the screen. Select the file(s) you wish to send, and the transfer will commence immediately. There's no need for pairing, sign-ins, or complex setups—just simple, efficient file sharing.Security ConsiderationsWhile Snapdrop offers robust security features, it's essential to exercise caution:Local Network Limitation: Snapdrop operates over a local network, meaning both devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. This limitation ensures that file transfers remain within a controlled environment.Public Wi-Fi Risks: Using Snapdrop over public Wi-Fi networks may expose devices to potential security threats. It's advisable to use Snapdrop on trusted networks to mitigate risks.Use CasesSnapdrop is versatile and can be utilized in various scenarios:Home Users: Quickly transfer photos, videos, or documents between personal devices without the hassle of cables or cloud services.Educational Institutions: Facilitate easy file sharing between students and teachers, especially in classrooms with diverse devices.Corporate Envi

What if the beliefs you've held close, the very things that gave you purpose, suddenly seemed like strangers? How do you hold on to meaning when it feels like it's slipping through your fingers? These were the questions that weighed down the wealthy, famous writer Tolstoy.Even though he had a loving family and children…Nothing was missing to enjoy his life…Yet, he was consumed by an inner emptiness. In his 50s, he faced an existential crisis…What is my life's purpose? What is all of this for?Why am I here? Why should I continue living if everything I love and cherish will ultimately fade away?Tolstoy's own meaning of life—his fame and success—felt like an illusion to him.Because it is so…For a religious seeker, fame, success, money, and family are just illusions. He wanted to find something that would last and give him a reason to keep going. For every religious person, worldly life is meaningless and often disgusting. In his autobiography, Confession, his search for meaning brought him to the verge of suicide.Personal satisfaction becomes a hollow pursuit; it doesn't give us meaning. In the end, he discovered a truth that was as simple as it was profound…But meaningless for religious people!Tolstoy realized that meaning could not be found in grand pursuits or intellectual answers but in acts of humility, connecting with others, and accepting life as it is.Only by merging myself with the whole of humanity could I find my life's purpose!Life has no meaning, nor is it meaningless. (Quote Bhagwan or Osho.)Tolstoy failed. Without a spiritual connection to God—found through contemplation—life has no meaning. You have to look beyond your physical body, emotions, and thoughts.“I can't die; I am energy.” These were the last words of Wilhelm Einstein.I don't want to brag, but I was clinically dead three times or had three near-death experiences.I read everything I could find about near-death experiences… Guess what? What I experienced is normal, and what all religions say about death is a big lie to exploit people. You can never die! There is no hell, no paradise, no Moksha, and no Nirvana. But there is God!You have never felt such unlimited freedom as many feel when leaving their bodies.God wanted me to come back into my body—my cage—and so I did.If you surrender your life to God, your life will make sense to you!Instead of running like a hungry dog after worldly pleasures! (Quote Attar, the greatest Sufi.)When my child died, my life fell apart…My only focus in life became my spiritual journey, and God came to me… God became my purpose.I spent over ten years in meditation retreats because life doesn't make sense without surrendering to God.We have the choice: to be slaves to our egos or to God.When religions lost their grip on people, they began searching for purpose or meaning in their lives—or to make a difference in the world. How disgusting is this sentence? I call this megalomania! How does one become humble by serving the Lord?Do it for God!The meaning of life or purpose is for irreligious people.  My Video:  Tolstoy's Surprising Solution to the Meaning of Life https://youtu.be/FpsQNNtXqvsMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast4/Tolstoy's-Surprising-Solution-to-the-Meaning-of-Life.mp3

It's not just the MAGA or the Woke crowd. According to Greg Lukianoff, CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), free speech in America is under existential threat from all political sides. While he's long criticized campus cancel culture from the left, he now opposes Trump's coercive targeting of big law firms, media companies, and universities. The Stanford Law trained Lukianoff argues that Trump's actions—removing security clearances, barring lawyers from federal buildings, and threatening media mergers—violate constitutional principles. Five Key Takeaways * Bipartisan Authoritarianism: Lukianoff fights free speech threats from both sides—campus cancel culture from the left that he's criticized for years, and now Trump's government coercion of law firms, media, and universities from the right.* Trump's Legal Warfare: The administration is removing security clearances from lawyers who opposed Trump, barring them from federal buildings (including courthouses), and threatening media companies' business deals—unprecedented attacks on legal and press freedom.* Institutional Cowardice: Major law firms like Paul Weiss capitulated quickly, offering millions in pro bono services to Trump, while others like Covington & Burling stood firm. Media responses have been mixed, with some caving under pressure.* Free Speech is Fragile: Lukianoff argues free speech isn't humanity's default state—it requires constant defense and can easily revert to authoritarianism when not actively protected by institutions and individuals.* Technology Accelerates Crisis: Social media and AI are speeding up existing problems of polarization and institutional decay, making the current free speech crisis more acute and unpredictable than previous eras.Greg Lukianoff is an attorney, New York Times best-selling author, and the President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). He is the author of Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate, Freedom From Speech, and FIRE's Guide to Free Speech on Campus. He co-authored The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure with Jonathan Haidt. Most recently Greg co-authored The Canceling of the American Mind: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust and Threatens Us All—But There Is a Solution with Rikki Schlott. Greg is also an Executive Producer of Can We Take a Joke? This week's EYE ON NPI is another onsemi device - this week we're looking at the NIV3071 4-Channel eFuse Solution (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/o/on-semi/niv3071-4-channel-efuse-solution) a power distribution manager that can lets you manage a product with a lot of power domains and supplies using just a couple GPIO pins. This week's product is an upgrade from the covered-earlier NIS5420 (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/09/09/eye-on-npi-onsemi-efuse-porfolio-eyeonnpi-digikey-onsemi-digikey-adafruit/) - with a higher 8~60V input range, and 4 independently-controlled channels. When people first meet fuses, they usually see and think of classic 'wire' fuses (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bel-fuse-inc/5ST-200-R/1009012) with ceramic or glass or thermoplastic bodies, and a thin wire inside. When too much current goes through the fuse wire, it gets hotter and hotter and eventually melts, cutting off the load from the source voltage. These kinds of fuses are super cheap, very-very-low resistance, easy to find at any hardware store, and there's lots of suppliers with various current limits. However, they're one-shot usage only and only good for over-current, can't act as switches/sequencers. You need to have a way for customers to access the fuse in order to replace it. For those reasons, a lot of engineers prefer going with 'poly fuses' - fuses that are easy to mount into a circuit that auto-reset after a time (usually minutes) so that a temporary overload doesn't make the device a brick so quickly. For example, we have a chunky 24V 5A hold / 10 A trip polyfuse (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/littelfuse-inc/2016L260-24MR/6347052) on the Sparkle Motion board design (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100), designed to protect folks who accidentally have a short in the output LED strings, and want to avoid damaging the power supply or main board. Poly-fuses are a great step-up from plain wire fuses: they're fairly inexpensive, available from lots of suppliers with various current limits, and best of all the fuse auto-resets after cooling down. However, like wire fuses, they're good for over-current, can't be reset, and have some variation depending on ambient temperature: you may trip 50% higher if its cold, or lower if its hot. Thus the next generation of fuses: eFuses (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/o/on-semi/efuse-automotive-circuit-protection)! As you could imagine, these are pure-silicon fuses, with a chunky N-FET that acts as the cut-off switch, and current limiting managed as an analog feedback loop that will cut the FET when too high. We get the resetability of a polyfuse, with additional control like sequence-able enable pins and under-voltage lockout. Note that some eFuses also can do over-voltage clamps and negative voltage protection, but the NIV3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3v0thr1p) doesn't contain these protections, so you may want to implement those protections separately. Especially designed for automotive power systems, which tend to be 12V/24V/36V/48V multiples, the NIV3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3v0thr1p) is AEC−Q100 qualified and PPAP capable (https://www.onsemi.com/pub/collateral/tnd6284-d.pdf). The use of eFuses is becoming popular as cars have become more computerized and electrified, with each 'zone' in a car (https://www.onsemi.com/solutions/automotive/zonal-architecture) - such as entertainment, communication, lighting, charging and sensors - all needing separate power management. If you don't need automotive qualifications, the functionally-compatible NIS3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/9v2dmvhf) is a couple of cents cheaper. This family of eFuses is good for up to 60V and 2.5A per channel, but if you need more per channel you can just double or triple them up to add 2.5A per. If you want less per channel, to protect low-power devices from overheating or accidental shorts, the current limit can be reduced with an external resistor. And of course, you can turn on/off each channel with a GPIO enable pin: great for sequencing your power chain to reduce stress on the power supply from inrush current, or to allow each section to stabilize and go through self-test. For your next power supply design, the onsemi NIV3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3v0thr1p) and NIS3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/9v2dmvhf) offer high-voltage, high-current control in a small package and a great price. Both are in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment, so you can book today and start integration by tomorrow afternoon.

For Helen Branswell, the celebrated Stat News reporter, the SARS outbreak of 2003, while she was based in Toronto, was a thunderclap moment. Jump forward 22 years: Secretary Kennedy on May 28, posted a one-minute video on X announcing he is not recommending Covid vaccines for healthy children and pregnant women -- an “unprecedented” unilateral decision without any normal process. “It came out of the mind of the individuals who wrote it.” What does this bold step signal?  The public is voting with its feet in the low uptake of Covid vaccines by the older and more vulnerable population. Yet it is not clear why the government has to take active measures to make vaccines less available to healthy individuals. CDC should play a lead role in deliberations but is cut out. The CDC director position is vacant, and no acting director is in place.  Will vaccine producers need to run new field trials for updated boosters? “They (the Trump administration) have been quite unclear in what they are asking for.”127 days into the second Trump administration, how to characterize things?  “I would characterize it as exhausting.”  “The change has been massive, and it is not over.”  What gives you hope? “That is a very hard question.”

The nuclear industry and its boosters promise clean, abundant energy, but nuclear power delivers expensive electricity while posing catastrophic radiation risks and a constant threat of nuclear war. M. V. Ramana, physicist and author of Nuclear is Not the Solution, explains why respecting the limits of the biosphere means reducing our energy use and rejecting elites' push for endless growth. Highlights include:  Why nuclear energy is inherently risky due to its complex, tightly coupled systems that are prone to catastrophic failures that can't be predicted or prevented; Why nuclear waste poses long-term threats to all life by remaining dangerously radioactive for thousands of years, with no safe, permanent disposal solution and frequent storage failures; Why nuclear energy is expensive, with projects routinely running over budget and behind schedule; Why the expansion of nuclear energy increases the likelihood of devastating nuclear war; How climate change and war-time accidents or direct targeting increase the risks of nuclear catastrophe; Why nuclear Uranium mining and its wastes often require ‘sacrifice zones' that are disproportionately found in indigenous land and less powerful communities; How the nuclear industry shapes nuclear policy and debate by capturing regulators and creating an energy ‘panic' based on one-sided narratives that block democratic discussion and scrutiny; Why, despite the hype from the nuclear industry, new nuclear plant designs like small modular reactors are subject to the same cost and safety concerns as the old designs;  Why the best answer to dealing with renewable energy's variability is not nuclear or fossil fuels but reducing demand; Why renewable energy is no panacea for planetary overshoot and why we need to have a broadly democratic conversation about living within the limits of the planet. BONUS: Solution-Focused Coaching: The Game-Changing Method Every Scrum Master Needs With Ralph Miarka and Veronika Jugwirth In this BONUS episode, we dive deep into solution-focused coaching with Ralph and Veronika, co-authors of "Solution Focused Coaching For Agile Teams." This conversation explores how to shift from problem-solving to solution-building, helping Agile teams thrive through a forward-looking approach that empowers teams to find their own path to success. Understanding Solution-Focused Coaching "Solution focus, focuses on the goal itself. We are not talking about 'how', but first start with 'what we want to achieve'." Solution-focused coaching represents a fundamental shift from traditional problem-solving approaches. Rather than diving into root cause analysis and retrospectives focused on what went wrong, this methodology centers on the future and desired outcomes. It operates as a communication system that recognizes the complexity of modern work environments where simple cause-effect relationships don't always apply. In engineering, root causes make sense when dealing with predictable systems, but in complex organizational dynamics, solution-focused coaching acknowledges that we often can't identify clear root causes and instead focuses on creating a "preferred future." In this segment we refer to Solution-focused brief therapy and the Cynefin model.  The Power of Not-Knowing "Instead of suggesting solutions, we should start by asking questions. The “Not-knowing position” is about accepting this." The "not-knowing position" challenges coaches and leaders to resist the urge to immediately diagnose problems and offer solutions. When someone shares their story, they're not sharing the version we think we know. This approach transforms coaching conversations by starting with questions like "What difference would it make for you to solve this problem?" This shift toward asking questions about a positive future can even help identify advocates among those who initially resist change, creating unexpected allies in transformation efforts. Everyone as an Expert "When we help teams change by themselves, they change much faster." The principle that "everyone is an expert in their situation" fundamentally changes how coaches approach team dynamics, especially during periods of pressure or conflict. Instead of imposing external solutions, this approach involves asking teams what they already like about their current practices. For example, when observing daily standups with their natural diversity of approaches, focusing on what teams appreciate about their existing practices creates a foundation for sustainable change. Teams that discover their own path to improvement implement changes more rapidly and with greater commitment than those following prescribed solutions. The Miracle Question Technique "What would be a very small first sign that tells you that there was a small miracle during the night?" The Miracle Question emerges from real coaching conversations where clients express that "only a miracle can help." Rather than dismissing this statement, solution-focused coaches embrace the client's language to create powerful exploration opportunities. The technique involves asking teams to imagine their situation after a small miracle has occurred overnight, then identifying the first small signs they would notice. This approach helps teams explore possibilities and envision concrete steps toward their preferred future, making abstract goals tangible and achievable. Unlearning the Fix-It Mentality "Don't work by yourself in the problems of others, let them work." For Agile practitioners trained to identify and fix problems, solution-focused coaching requires a significant mindset shift. Instead of jumping into problem-solving mode, coaches must learn to hold space for solutions to emerge naturally from the team. This involves trusting that team members are experts in their own situations and developing strong questioning skills. Coaches and Scrum Masters need to clarify their own goals and resist the urge to solve problems for others, instead creating conditions where teams can work through challenges themselves. Practical Questions for Immediate Implementation "What do we want to achieve? What is our goal, and why?" Teams can immediately begin incorporating solution-focused approaches by bringing specific questions into their regular ceremonies. Key questions include exploring what the team wants to achieve and understanding the underlying purpose behind their goals. Additionally, asking "What works already?" helps teams build on existing strengths rather than focusing solely on problems. Confidence-building questions like "How confident are we?" and "What would make you more confident?" create opportunities for teams to identify specific actions that would increase their likelihood of success. Recently there has been a lot of discussions and social media debate about the apparent crisis within the farriery profession. This has centred around the economy of farriery as a profession and the lack of training providers and people coming into the profession.Like all farriery rants on social media, we all shared it on our feed so no doubt your customers can see it and feel sorry for you! Id like to add at this point “they don't care”. I have personally thought for some time in the UK that we are most of the time subsidising their hobby and their want to own a horse compared to the prices with the rest of the developed world. To fix this it will take more than farriers sharing a well written post by another farrier on their social media. We need to get in a room together discover how we got in this situation in the first place, work on strategies to improve our value and to raise the price of farriery and go up together.Up until this point apart from moaning no one has proactively done anything to resolve this situation until now.Tom Smith FWCF, an experienced farrier who has been in the business since 2006, discusses his career journey, the challenges faced by the farrier industry, and the need for change. He highlights the potential lack of farriers in the future, the struggle with proper pricing, and the undervaluation of their work. Tom introduces 'Forge Smart,' a 10-month program designed to help farriers improve their business acumen, raise their prices collectively, and enhance the professionalism of the industry.  The discussion covers the importance of community, professional development, and re-evaluating traditional practices to ensure the sustainability and growth of the farrier profession.www.forgesmart.co.ukThank you to the Podcast Sponsorswww.silverbackchaps.comwww.theshoeinglab.com
