In honor of July 4th in America, on today's podcast, I'm rerunning my Memorial Day 2022 episode with my amazing friend Yvonne Caputo. She is the author of "Flying with Day." This is not only the story of a WWII B-24 Navigator, but the story about the importance of listening. Michael Caputo was a member of "the greatest generation" and he had a story to tell. Fortunately for us, his daughter, Yvonne listened. This podcast is also about the importance of listening to your elders and learning from what they have to say. Yvonne's book can be found on Amazon, or your favorite place where books are sold. She can be reached at Yvonne@Yvonnecaputo.com As always, you are invited to join the Strive to Thrive Facebook group for a supportive community.... https://www.facebook.com/groups/strivetothrivepageBTW...If you love this episode, please take a screenshot, share it on your Facebook story and tag me @TonyWechsler
Welcome to Episode 237 where we DO NOT talk about the scheduled ghost story, “Thrawn Janet” by Robert Louis Stevenson due to human error. We'll discuss it on the next episode along with “The Open Door” by Margaret Oliphant. Now, on to what we DID discuss. What we're currently reading: THE GARDEN by Clare Beams, SILAS MARNER by George Eliot, and COOKING IN REAL LIFE by Lidey Heuck. What we've just read: THE SHINING by Stephen King, MEMORIAL DAYS by Geraldine Brooks, and SO FAR GONE by Jess Walter. There are Biblio Adventures: Chris talked about attending the very first Bloomsday celebration at the Guilford Free Library and watching the 1980 film adaptation of The Shining. Emily shares her stop at the Montclair Public Library in New Jersey on the way to Princeton, and recaps the excitement of attending the 2025 Aspen Food & Wine Classic and fan-girling over Nancy Silverton whose book, THE COOKIE THAT CHANGED MY LIFE, is a longtime favorite. We had a wonderful discussion at our monthly Reading Salon with Patreon supporters about short books (the flip side of last month's big books). As always we wrapped with upcoming jaunts and reads, and a reminder about our third quarter readalong in our year of reading Ghost Stories – THE UPSTAIRS HOUSE by Julia Fine with a companion read of “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Happy Reading! https://www.bookcougars.com/blog-1/2025/episode237
In this episode, Jaclyn and Sam dive deep into creating intentional peace—financially and personally. Sam kicks things off by sharing insightful takeaways from recent podcast by Brian Buffini and Dr. John Delony. Jaclyn recounts a personal decision to resist Memorial Day sales, instead investing in crypto and stocks—highlighting the value of making mindful financial choices aligned with long-term goals. They discuss their aim to build diversified "all-weather portfolios," inspired by Tony Robbins' book, Unshakeable, and share practical tips on saving and investing incrementally through user-friendly apps like Qapital. Lastly, they reveal their new routine of planning weekends on Fridays, balancing productivity with ample rest, and how this intentional approach has significantly improved their overall sense of peace.Question for listeners: How can you plan for peace in your financial life and personal downtime? Episode 60: Show Notes This year, only one of us had a Memorial Day trip, at least on a plane, and this episode is all about that! This trip also marks Trevor's family's first international long-haul trip since January of this year. From their experience at the Centurion Lounge at Washington, DC's Reagan-National airport, to managing flights with a toddler, Trevor shares the highlights. We start with Tom's fishing trip to Chesapeake before diving into Trevor's vacation, which began on a boat and continued with a JetBlue flight to Madrid via Boston. He talks about lounge experiences, including Capital One and Chase Sapphire, and offers tips for handling naps and meals in-flight. In Madrid, Trevor shares why this visit topped previous ones, from the Thompson hotel to great food. The family then flew to Valencia on Air Europa, explored major sites, stayed at Palacio Santa Clara, enjoyed paella, visited the zoo, and saw local protests. Movement, Detroit’s long-running techno music festival made its way back to the city last month. Dynamic sounds and energetic tempos could be felt miles away from Hart Plaza as massive crowds danced their way through Memorial Day Weekend. Headlining this year’s festival was Carl Craig, a Detroit music producer, DJ, and founder of the record label Planet E Communications. Last year, a documentary film that chronicles the artist's life, Desire: The Carl Craig Story, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. This year, the film was screened at a pre-party to the music festival, ringing in the vibrant celebration of techno. “Most people don’t get a chance to see their lives before their eyes until a near-death experience. When self-loathing stops selling, what happens to those who built entire empires on our shame? There's a deep shift rumbling underfoot—and it's not a political campaign or marketing trend. It's cultural. Spiritual. Almost romantic. America, for all its bruises and betrayals, is on the edge of something dangerous:It might start loving itself again. Not the flag-waving jingoism of talk radio. Not the sanitized patriotism of Memorial Day ads. Something messier. Stranger. Post-shame. A populist reconciliation where people stop apologizing for their gut instincts, their neighborliness, or their American-ness.And that's a problem for the class of people, industries, and institutions that built their relevance on American self-hate.Because once Americans stop hating themselves—once they no longer see their culture as inherently oppressive, their traditions as tainted, their flag as a hate symbol—the control matrix begins to short-circuit.Shame Was the ProductFor decades, the American psyche was mined for guilt. White guilt. Male guilt. Christian guilt. Cis guilt. Western guilt. Consumer guilt. Colonizer guilt. Guilt became a currency. Shame became social credit.Every institution got in on it:Academia turned self-flagellation into prestige.Brands commodified penance into ad campaigns.Politicians leveraged confusion into votes.NGOs and influencers made careers managing public confession. But what happens when people stop buying it?When working-class Latinos in Texas vote red—not because they're “brainwashed,” but because they're tired of hearing their values are backwards? When a gay couple in Oklahoma flies the stars and stripes next to their Pride flag—not to troll, but because they mean both? When people stop looking to D.C. or New York for moral clarity—and start turning inward, to their neighbors, their church, or even just their gut?The whole machine wobbles. The Ozempic Body and the American SoulSure, part of this shift is aesthetic. The Ozempic era flattened a million bellies. Testosterone clinics are booming. Cold plunges, Bibles, kettlebells, and banjos are back. But it's not just self-improvement. It's self-respect.It's what happens when the American everyman—fat, tired, broke, and spiritually malnourished—starts remembering how to walk tall. To live with pride, not performative guilt. To feel righteous without NPR's permission. This isn't a return to Reagan-era patriotism. It's something more anarchic. A love affair with American-ness that's post-partisan, embodied, and deeply uninterested in elite approval.Love Is Not the Narrative They WantedPopulism wasn't supposed to be joyful. It wasn't supposed to have goat cheese and jazz. It wasn't supposed to include Black homesteaders, Latina gun girls, trans folks with chickens, and veterans running permaculture farms. But it does.Because when you get off the grid—physically or spiritually—you stop caring about elite scripts. And here's the kicker: when America stops being defined by its sins and starts being redefined by its resilience and beauty—what happens to those whose power depends on unending grievance? What happens to the NGOs? The think tanks? The DEI consultants? The marketing agencies whose schtick is managing identity-based shame? They lose relevance. Influence. Power.Because you can't guilt someone who no longer believes they're broken. The Reckoning for the Shame EconomySo yes—be afraid. Be very afraid.Because when Americans stop hating themselves, they start building again. Loving again. Protecting what's theirs again. And that doesn't always look like bootstraps and Bud Light. Sometimes it looks like sourdough, or homeschooling, or a new liturgy no one asked permission to write. The culture war isn't over. But the ground is shifting. And when America looks in the mirror and smiles? That's the moment every shame merchant should fear.

Chop the Onion, Celery, Red Bell Pepper, Green Bell Pepper, and Green Onions. Drop two Sticks of Butter into your hot pot and melt completely. Add the chopped vegetables to the pot and raise burner to a medium. Add the Cajun Seasoning, Cayenne Pepper, and Salt. Sauté for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile chop the four cloves of Garlic. After 20 minuets of sautéing, add the garlic and sauté for another 10 minutes. After 10 more minuets of sautéing, push the vegetables to one side of the pot, add the 1/3 cup of flour and blend into the butter. Once the flour is mixed in well, stir everything altogether. Sauté for another 30 minutes. Be very cautious during this time. If fire seems a little high, lower it. Around this time you want to begin cooking some rice. With about 3 minutes left of sautéing, begin heating 2 cups of water in the microwave. Add a little bit of the hot water to the pot, and stir until it's a creamy mixture. Add the Crawfish and rest of the hot water to the pot. Blend evenly. Raise the heat to where you see a slight boil. Cover, and lower to a simmering heat. Cook for about 15-20 minutes. If you feel as though you would like a thinner sauce, just add a little more water. However, taste to see if you need more seasoning. Enjoy Dat!

Exodus 2:23-25; Genesis 35:1-8 This Sunday marks one year from the tornado, but it is also Memorial Day weekend. Both invite us to reflection on what it means to remember and honor the past, and move forward at the same time.
Time for another episode of At The Parties w/ Hobert, where PMT host Hobert walks around a party and asks fellow partiers what movies they've seen recently, and what they thought of them. It's a movie review show where everyone's a little tipsy and full. At this year's annual hotdog-themed Memorial Day bash, Hobert took a break from grilling to chill, have an Old Style, hear about the latest current releases and old favorites, briefly develop a star system and then drop it, and do a lot of plugging for Gabewatch (next show June 28th!).FriendshipFantastic PlanetMission: Impossible - Final ReckoningMechanical Violator HakaiderAguirre, the Wrath of GodHolesSinnersSpeed RacerPersonaDidiThe Last RodeoHot Fuzz (aka Shaun of the Dead)JazzMoulin Rouge!Real (2017)The Final GirlsThe Shrouds
The summer is finally here! This is both literal and figurative. We just celebrated Memorial Day as the weather is heating up. Just like the 4 seasons of nature, my business is entering a new season. After selling my 1st solo business in 2018, we moved to our hometown and stayed indoors. I tried everything in my power to build my coaching and consulting business in 2018 and early 2019. I stayed indoors as much as possible as I didn't want to clean. This was winter. Ultimately, I needed to get outside again and start planting seeds. I started this podcast and my aggressive networking plan in late 2019. This was the start of Spring. By the beginning of 2021, our new business was cranking and I was able to work on my consulting business again. My cleaning business was optimized and it was comfortable outside. Spring was coming to an end. But with anything, being comfortable is not a good place to be. I needed to get my hunger back and stretch myself. I need to put on my shorts, get outside and enjoy the weather. A New Freedom Vision was placed in my heart and we needed to enjoy this summer in the winter by spending a month in Florida in February. This would require me to scale my business beyond the comfort of Spring into the dog days of Summer. This will pay off because Fall represents the harvest of all seeds sown in the Spring. I am so excited to reach that season and earn my family's financial freedom! Now that you've got the seasonal perspective of my new Philly cleaning business, I'd like to announce a segment change to the podcast. I've been sharing weekly updates on my Carfagno Cleaning business since inception in October 2019. However, I've been adding more and more value-packed influencer interviews and snippets from expert calls within my paid groups, that I don't have the space to continue them. For this Summer season of Carfagno Cleaning, I will shift from weekly to monthly updates on my cleaning business. I will not share every detail as I have been. I will share relevant wins, struggles, and lessons that I feel will best support your own business growth. Most importantly, I will keep you updated on the progress of my efforts to scale my business so this long-time solo cleaner can get out of the field and live a life of time, money, and location freedom.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

This week, Sam and Hannah are back from a heavy Memorial Day Weekend of reading, and Hannah's books, in particular, are once again well-coordinated. Even if they're a little hard to describe. Also, this is a solid Pride episode, sort of by mistake. Here's what's on tap: - "The Book of Records," by Madeleine Thien, which is as meaty a read as we've had in a while, full of philosophical truths and a building made of time. This is great stuff. - "Erasure," by Percival Everett, who is legitimately among the most important writers working today. This is the book that was made into the movie "American Fiction," but, as you might imagine, is even better than the movie. - "I'll Tell You When I'm Home," by Hala Alyan, who this time delivers a memoir grappling with her family's history of immigration, escaping Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion and coming to the U.S. This book shows you what generational trauma means. - "The Phoenix Pencil Company," by Allison King, a data privacy professional who's crafted a magical text about a family that can read pencil hearts (they stab it into their veins) that's perfect for Pride month. It's weird, yes. But new and different. - "Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil," by V.E. Schwab, which is an ode to Anne Rice — a vampire book — but doesn't really follow Rice's vampire rules, exactly (they're all lesbian vampires, which is different). The second half of this is pretty great. - Oh, and we're not going to tell you which book it is we disliked so intensely. See if you can figure it out. And there's no real good reason why this didn't get posted before June 10, other than Sam being in Iceland and not feeling like posting it. Sorry.

Bryan takes us to Hungary to tell us about their government banning LGBTQ+ events, including Budapest Pride, and how the EU is lacking the backbone to do anything about it. Judson spends a glorious Memorial Day Weekend on his second annual trip to Naked Yoga Camp in Austin, this time with his husband. Brian is redeemed for the hookup gone wrong almost 18 months ago, which led to the birth of this podcast. He also explains the concept of semen to his nine-year-old daughter and receives a perfect review on TheBlowers. Judson and Brian then enjoy a listener-submitted Hookup of the Week before launching into a conversation about Playing in Public. Judson and Brian share their favorite open-air spots and experiences, some of the opportunities gay vacation destinations provide for public sex, and the pros and cons of sex outdoors versus sex at parties. They close the episode by responding to a Go Ask Your Dad question from a listener who isn't happy when his boyfriend implies he may have his own hookup with someone they're both attracted to. Memorial Day is past us, and we're barrelling into Summer. So much has been happening over the past month, and so much is going to happen in the near future. This week, Ben and I are going to round up some of the big stories in the news and think a bit about what they might mean for all of us.
This week Mackenzie and Hanna invite the first PI guest on the show to share one of their own stories! The first PI guest is Austin, a nine-year veteran whose toolkit spans family-law digs, criminal-defense surveillance, insurance-fraud exposés and cutting-edge open-source sleuthing. He pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to trail a suspect—long hours in a lobby, split-second decisions on whether to dash inside or stay hidden, and even the pros and cons of facial-recognition software like PIMeyes. You'll get Austin's top safety hacks for vetting dates (free and low-cost background-check resources you can use tonight) and discover why a seemingly innocent Memorial Day beach trip ended with an all-too-public, trunk-wide rendezvous in a cherry-red Porsche.Click here to join our Patreon! The hosts share personal experiences navigating life post-COVID, including the challenges of returning to work and the exhaustion that lingers. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1065: Today we're breaking down Rivian's big win with VW, a wild scene in LA as Waymo vehicles go up in flames, and how back-to-school shopping is creeping into summer.Show Notes with links:The tech partnership between EV upstart Rivian and legacy automaker Volkswagen just took a major leap forward. Rivian's upcoming R2 SUV platform won't just support Rivian's own vehicles—it's about to become the backbone of every new EV under the Volkswagen Group umbrella. All VW brands—Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Scout, Skoda, Seat—will share the R2 tech stack.VW's ID Every1 will be the first to launch using Rivian's off-the-shelf zonal architecture. The partnership helps VW replace its troubled Cariad software division with a proven modular platform.Rivian's Chief Software Officer confirmed all VW EVs will use the same scalable architecture, calling it “the digital brain” of the portfolio. Each brand keeps its unique identity via custom UI, tuning, and features, but the tech core is unified. At least five Waymo self-driving I-Pace EVs were destroyed during violent protests in Los Angeles over the weekend—representing a possible 5% loss of its local fleet. The unrest followed ICE raids and escalated into clashes with police and vandalism.Rioters reportedly summoned Waymo vehicles, slashed tires, smashed windows, and set them on fire.Fire crews couldn't access the scene in time, and the vehicles burned completely.Waymo operates about 100 cars in LA and over 1,500 nationwide.Waymo has suspended service in the area, saying, “We will not be serving any rides in the protest area until it is deemed safe,”Back-to-school deals have crept into early summer, with brands and retailers scrambling to catch up to shifting consumer habits—and to tariff-driven inventory pressures.Retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Wayfair kicked off fall prep as early as Memorial Day.Prime Day in the middle of July now marks the unofficial start of the back-to-school shopping season. This year's shoppers are favoring essentials and budget-friendly items over big-ticket dorm splurges“Consumers are looking for the best discount, the best sale, the best value...” — Kassi Socha of GartnerJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
