When Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele teamed up, both brought solid backgrounds including time with Second City and Mad TV. Together, they built a classic sketch comedy show that could make you think and make you laugh. Key & Peele ran for just four seasons, but racked up numerous awards including a Peabody Award for distinguished achievement in media. The secret to Key & Peele's comedy was taking one unusual character or occurrence and slowly, inevitably taking it to more absurd and hilarious levels. Since the show wrapped, Key has gone on to a busy and varied acting career and Peele has become an Oscar-winning director, with a gift for horror films. Citing Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as an example, the duo may come together for the occasional project. ​I booked a room at the Intercontinental Hotel in Montreal through Hotwire a couple of days ago. When I arrived at the hotel the receptionist asked me for a $250 deposit for incidentals. Next morning, without my permission (sure, okay, it's likely buried in the small print) they charged my card an additional $200. I subsequently learned that this was because I'd booked a couple of massages at their spa. When I checked out they charged me for the massages and told me that I should see the $450 back on my card in 2-3 business days.    Of course, this scam earns the hotel money at my expense. A tiny expense, but, when combined with all of the other visitors' tiny expenses, not tiny. This scam is similar to the one operated by the oil companies when they insist that you punch in the amount you think you'll need to spend filling your tank at their pumps. It's your money and time they're stealing. Peanuts per person, big coconuts together.    Where's the government on this? The same place government is on poor banking services, the highest mobile phone rates in the world, and sky-high dairy prices. Nowhere. Canadian governments have abandoned Canadian consumers. Valets to the rich and big business they are; to an alarming degree.   Which brings us to copyright legislation.    Cravenly hidden in an omnibus Budget Bill (a tactic Trudeau swore he'd never use), Bill C-32 received royal assent on December 31, 2022. It extends copyright protection in Canada for writers and other creators from fifty to seventy years after they die. How does this benefit the public? It doesn't. Not at all. Does it provide added incentive for these authors to create and innovate? None. Does it help readers and researchers and teachers? No, it does the opposite.    Lobbyists convinced the Trudeau government to extend copyright with one pathetic argument: that it brings Canada into compliance with other jurisdictions. Greed won out in other words. Now, no new works will come into the public domain in Canada for another twenty years. How does this affect books and readers, writers and publishers? I ask Michael Geist. He's a law professor at the University of Ottawa where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law and is a member of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society. He has obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees from Cambridge University in the UK and Columbia Law School in New York, and a Doctorate in Law (J.S.D.) from Columbia Law School - so he should know.

Il est l'auteur de Dominer le monde : les séries historiques anglo-saxonnes (Vendémiaire, 2017) et L'Angleterre en séries : un siècle d'histoire britannique à travers trois séries cultes (Downton Abbey, Peaky Blinders, The Crown) (First, 2020). Il a également signé la préface du troisième tome de l'ouvrage collectif The Historians : Les séries TV décryptées par les historiens (Georg, 2020). Enfin, il est conseiller éditorial chez Armand Colin, où il a aidé à faire paraître des synthèses consacrées aux séries policières et aux séries de science-fiction. Il présente ici la série britannique DOWNTOWN ABBEY, une des séries britanniques les plus marquantes de ces dernières années, une série emblématique du savoir-faire britannique, en particulier en matière de period drama, mais aussi un grand succès international (et en particulier aux États-Unis, mais aussi en Asie orientale).Il fait ensuite le pitch de la série, c'est d'observer la vie d'une demeure et d'un domaine aristocratique anglais sur une durée de 15 ans, de 1912 à 1927, en suivant deux groupes : les maîtres (la famille Crawley) et les valets, les employeurs et les employés, ceux d'en-haut et ceux d'en bas. La série s'étend sur 6 saisons de 2010 à 2015, soit une cinquantaine d'épisodes et un film sorti au cinéma en 2019. Il montre ensuite que la série construit ses histoires sur des événements historiques et des périodes précises. Le 1er épisode commence d'ailleurs par la nouvelle du naufrage du Titanic. On traverse donc la 1ère Guerre mondiale et l'après-guerre avec en toile de fond la question irlandaise (la guerre d'indépendance se déroule en 1919-1921). On a aussi un arrière-plan d'histoire culturelle avec l'arrivée des Roaring Twenties (les “années folles”) et des modes comme la mode égyptienne à la suite de la découverte de la tombe de Toutankhamon en 1922 qu'on voit bien dans la saison 6. Mais ce qui intéresse le plus la série, ce sont les relations sociales. Ioanis Deroide montre ensuite que la formule de Downton Abbey doit beaucoup à une série du début des années 1970, Upstairs, Downstairs (diffusée en France sous le titre Maîtres et Valets), une autre série historique qui se déroulait à Londres dans les années 1900 à 1930. Plus largement, il existe toute une tradition de la série historique sociale à la TV britannique avec, encore aujourd'hui, des titres comme Poldark (qui est un remake d'une série du même nom des années 1970). A noter que cette sensibilité sociale s'accomode de tous les tons, du très dramatique et sombre au franchement comique. On trouve des comédies historiques sociales (Brass, Plebs…). Downton Abbey se déroule sur une assez longue période, elle montre des évolutions sociales, et surtout l'émancipation ou au moins la volonté croissante d'émancipation des femmes. Nombreux rôles féminins importants dans la série avec une variété de générations de la grand-mère Lady Violet aux petites-filles Mary, Edith et Sybil. Idem chez les domestiques de Mrs Hughes à Gwen. Tensions entre respect des traditions et volonté d'indépendance, d'accomplissement personnel : Lady Sybil qui devient infirmière pendant la guerre, Gwen qui quitte le service pour devenir secrétaire, etc. C'est enfin une série intéressante en tant que produit.
