This week Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham is solo with David Woods out because he is in a "protocol" according to his publicist. The show must go on however, so Ryan dives into all of the juicy Pac-12 football news and notes that Dave despises so much, including starting quarterback news at Utah and Arizona, The Alliance that formed between the Pac-12, Big 10 and ACC, the Pac-12 deciding not to expand and of course Washington State head coach Nick Rolovich getting prickly with the mandatory vaccine mandate handed down by the Governor of Washington. They also make all of their picks for each Pac-12 football program for the 2021 season including the division winners and overall conference winner. With Ryan doing the show solo, Dave's publicist sent in his picks and Ryan went through them on the show. Both hosts agree on the conference champion but disagree on the Pac-12 South winner. And as always they (or just Ryan this week) spend time answering every single question listeners manage to send in, including text messages and voicemails! About Ryan Shazier:Despite unexpected challenges throughout his life, Ryan has met his goals, silenced his doubters and served as an inspiration to fans across the world. Now, he is turning that motivation toward increasing funding, resources and support for spinal cord injury (SCI) patients.Ryan knew from age five that he wanted to make it to the NFL, but it wasn't long before he faced his first significant obstacle. He was diagnosed with alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes partial or total hair loss. Through the taunts and bullying, he didn't let the disease get him down or shy away from his dream. He embraced it as part of who he was and let his play define him, not outsiders. After high school, he left his sunny home state of Florida for the rough weather up north, joining college football powerhouse Ohio State, where he immediately made an impact, starting as a freshman at linebacker. In three years with the Buckeyes, Ryan recorded 315 tackles, 208 solo tackles and 14.5 sacks. That success made him a perfect fit for the Steelers, who selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He didn't disappoint, becoming a star playmaker known for his speed, smarts and instinctual nose for the ball. He made the Pro Bowl in two of his first three seasons. Over 46 games, including 41 starts, he recorded 299 tackles and had seven interceptions. Then it all changed. During a Monday night game in Cincinnati on Dec. 4, 2017, Ryan suffered a spinal contusion, or a crushing of the spinal cord. The nerve signals in his spine were disrupted, paralyzing his lower body and necessitating emergency spinal stabilization surgery. Doctors said he had a 20 percent chance of walking again, but for Ryan, this was just another obstacle to overcome. After 130 spinal rehabilitation sessions, Ryan not only gained back strength to walk, but he was able to dance with his wife at their wedding just two years after the devastating injury. Moving on to the next chapter of his life, Ryan is now making it his personal goal to help SCI patients get the treatment they deserve and meet their own goals through the Ryan Shazier Fund for Spinal Rehabilitation. With Ryan on their side, these patients have a supporter who understands their struggles and a teammate who won't let them down.https://ryanshazierfund.org

We played to his strengths and the strengths of our offense.” Smith said.    Coach Smith also pointed to Ryan’s history of success and says he is looked forward to working with the veteran signal-caller.   “Certainly Matt Ryan has had a ton of success. In today’s episode, we’ve assembled a fantastic group of coaches to discuss the differences, similarities, nuances, and challenges of coaching beginner athletes versus veteran amateurs.  This episode is filled with myriad topics, all related to the coach-athlete relationship. And it starts by defining some terms. What constitutes a beginner, and a veteran? Can you be a beginner if you’ve ridden for 10 years but don’t know much about how to train? We’ll discuss.  What should beginners focus on most? What should veterans focus on most? How does a good coach most effectively work to identify each athlete’s needs?  How can an athlete get the most out of working with a coach, and how does that differ if you’re a beginner or a veteran? These questions and so many more, today on Fast Talk.  Our guest coaches today include Grant Holicky, someone you’ve heard many times before on Fast Talk; former pro triathlete and XTERRA world champion turned coach, Melanie McQuaid, who appeared in episode 99; and Ryan Kohler.   Ryan is the former manager of the University of Colorado Sports Medicine and Performance Center and—exciting news here—the new Head Coach here at Fast Labs. This week we welcome Ryan Patrick to the show to talk about training! We get into Ryan’s background, his experience being a part of the Silverback Project, concurrent training, and filling the buckets for high level athletes. Ryan has been the owner of Peak Fitness and Sports Training in Kentucky for 10 years, serving adult gen pop clients and high level professional athletes alike. Ryan has competed in powerlifting and in recent years has enjoyed training himself like an athlete, having met James through the beta version of The Silverback Project.  We first get into Ryan’s evolution as an athlete and coach. Having started off with a bodybuilding background in highschool and dabbling with training through college and post college, Ryan discovered powerlifting in 2014. While powerlifting helped rekindle his enthusiasm for training, he missed being an athlete and found himself not identifying with the idea that you’re washed up once your highschool playing days are over. Ryan ended up hopping on the very first Silverback Project in 2018 and jumped head first into transforming himself into a hybrid athlete. The concurrent model completely reframed how Ryan thought about training and how he now structures programming for himself and clients.  This leads us into getting into how Ryan is currently programming for some of his higher level pro athletes. Taking a page from Bill Hartman’s model, he starts with looking at the two different movement strategies of compression and expansion and how he can increase their options. With these athletes in particular, they already have exceptional abilities, so making improvements is a matter of filling the buckets and giving them what they need. With a limited amount of time to work with these guys, he is simply trying to find the low hanging fruit to get them ready for camp and avoid injury from a lack of preparation. He has them lifting 3 days a week with 2 days a week of lower intensity conditioning, and even one higher intensity conditioning day on Saturdays to coincide with their specific movement and agility based drills.  We transition to discussing the concept of “kangaroos vs gorillas” and Velocity Based Training when working with different athletes and deciding which qualities they need more of. With Ryan’s objective of making these already force based athletes a little bit faster, he trains them in zones more specific towards the velocity side of the curve so that they can learn to produce that force in as little time as possible. He makes sure to keep other variables such as rest periods consistent so that he’s getting a true reading of how much output the athletes are capable of and how much volume is appropriate.  We then talk about how he cooks in movement variability into a program without spending inordinate amounts of time laying around on the floor and potentially losing buy-in. With the NFL guys he works with, Ryan is looking to drive very specific adaptations so he will often use what could be called “redundant” training to layer on intensity as he’s trying to recapture movement capacity. This way he can still continue to build fitness qualities while getting athletes to recognize the similarities behind what they’re doing and how it will translate to ultimately making them better.  James then brings up the point of using the right exercises to plug the leaky holes so that you can funnel more energy into the things that truly matter. In this instance, when looking at what would be usually considered to be accessory based exercises, both of the guys agree that you want to be far more concerned with the quality of the movement and not necessarily trying to hit big personal records. This keeps “the goal the goal” while still keeping the training very challenging.  Next, Ryan breaks down how implements sprinting into his athlete’s programming. With his young athletes in particular, he believes that there needs to be an element of...

Ryan Simonetti, CEO of Brookfield-backed Convene, joins Bold Founder, Caleb Parker in an inspiring episode on leadership and optimism on the future of commercial real estate. Ryan shares the core values that’s helped make Convene successful over the last decade, what’s enabled him to take decisive action during the Covid pandemic, why he believes we’re in the middle of “The Great Accelerator", how office as an asset class is going through a transformation and why buildings without Space-as-as-Service will struggle in the future. Connect with Ryan on Twitter: https://twitter.com/rwsimonetti Connect with Caleb on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Caleb_Parker   If you have any questions or feedback on this episode, email podcast@workbold.co Questions asked in this episode You were quoted a couple years ago with saying that only 2 things keep you up at night: your 2 year old and your company’s culture. Can you talk about the culture you’ve built at Convene?  Often business leaders keep quiet on topics that become politically polarized, but you’ve been vocal on social media sharing what you believe. Is that risky? Do you think more business leaders should take a stance? You made the decision early on to close all Convene locations, even before the Government mandated lockdowns. What drove that decision?  It’s an understatement to say this is a difficult time - how do you balance maintaining optimism with facing the realities of today? What makes you optimistic about the future of our industry? You’ve been talking a lot about hybrid and virtual events - do you expect this to last long-term? How is this going to affect occupancy or vacancy rates in commercial assets? How do you think our industry needs to evolve to keep up with the growing demand for SPaaS? Do you think #CRE needs an asset class for Space-as-a-Service? What is your advice to commercial real estate leaders who are not convinced that SPaaS is the future of #CRE? Value Bombs and tweetables Leadership At the core of a company's culture is a set of beliefs and values - core non-negotiables. Core values are the high bar for which a company hires talent and the lens through which all decisions are made. GRIT as a core value stands for: Genuine, Relentless, Integrity, Teamwork, and is required for any disruptive company to succeed. Integrity is the most important core value. Business is the greatest team sport of all. We’ll see more companies and executives take a proactive stance to have a positive impact on societal issues. “As the leader of a company I need to speak out on behalf of our team, and what we believe as a company is the right thing to do.” The decisions that companies make during this pandemic will impact their value for decades to come. Future of #CRE This crisis will be seen as the great accelerator for the Future of Work and Space-as-a-Service trends we’ve been seeing. Many of these trends that were expected to take 15-20 years for change to take effect will now happen in 3-5 years. Hybrid and virtual events and work is here to stay long-term. Talent wants choice, flexibility and experience. Shift toward the individual, not the company, being in control specific to when, where and how we work Remote work will make up 25-35% of a company’s workforce #CRE needs to support people working in the HQ and remotely If an asset doesn’t offer Space-as-a-Service it’s going to struggle   About Ryan Simonetti Ryan Simonetti is the CEO and co-founder of Convene, the company that designs and services premium places to work, meet, and host inspiring events. New Year, New Goals and New Guests. And what better than our first episode for the year being with one of Broad Spectrums most talented recruits, Drew Lehman. Broad Spectrum, if you aren't already aware design, fund, construct, operate, and maintain major projects and infrastructure assets across diverse industries all over Australia. Meaning they are experts in delivering projects in fields such as Airports, Rail and Metro, Public Transport, Roads, Telecommunication, Water, Power, Defence, Local Government, Maritime, Social Housing, Universities, Schools and Campuses, Justice, Property, Health, Oil and Gas, Mining and Industrial. With a company as diverse as this you would have to be mad not to have a glance over their job board and see what opportunities they might have for you. We have mentioned it before but something we are both quite passionate and want to use this podcast for is to enable people to be able to find their dream careers within the Engineering industry. And frankly in an episode like this it's great to hear about the endless opportunities that exist at Broad Spectrum as we certainly feel that most people looking at a company like this could easily identify a dream job quite quickly. Drew has had a variety of experiences within the company as she now comes to the completion of her graduate program. She talks about her work on defence contracts and as well as DIDO (Drive in Drive Out) positions, and that's just naming a few, throughout the episode. Now she bases herself in a head office in Sydney, but expresses her motivation to get back out in the field, where she feels "real experience" is gained. We are both extremely excited to be back and getting this show back on the road! So we are hoping that his episode will be the start of lots more interesting and plenty more value add stories for the year to come. As an added initiative we have decided that we want to start advertising vacant positions at the companies we talk to, to promote these opportunities to our listeners. Please see them below. With Ryan in Melbourne, Drew in Sydney and I in Brisbane we all caught up for a quick chat on the phone to learn how Drew has broken into typically male-dominated workplaces like rural mine sites and defence bases with such grace and humility not commonly seen in young professionals. Drew being a long time friend and definitely someone who helped me pass one too many uni exams, wasn't someone we just had to interview. I insisted as I knew that her incredible humility and good nature was definitely something the Engineering world hadn't seen yet and I really wanted to know how it was all playing out as she comes to the end of her graduate program at broad spectrum and begins to look for more challenging roles within the organisation.

This time of year, we gather and celebrate the holidays with family and friends. For members of our family, this is a particularly meaningful Christmas: this is the first Christmas without Barb Taylor and without Mary Cicero. Two great ladies that made our world a brighter and better place. While these wonderful women left us too soon, we continue to practice Holiday and Christmas Traditions that bring family and friends together. We will build on these Christmas Traditions in the future as we celebrate each other, our lives, our history and our heritage. In this post, I will discuss Five Christmas Traditions that we practice, and if you don't have your own Christmas Traditions, maybe that will inspire you to give some of them a try! Just to be completely honest with you, I am late with this post. I originally wanted to post it earlier this week. Given the mix of emotions this year, I found that this was a particularly difficult post for me to write. I struggled with how to frame and write it as I have been working on it all week. I want to thank my sister-in-law Kelly Domres for helping me "get over the hump" on this post. As she said eloquently, "Do not dwell on the negative; you have a lot to be thankful for this year." She is absolutely correct. This post is dedicated to my sister-in-law, Kelly. 1. Decorating the Christmas Tree We moved from our house in St. Louis Park in July, and most of our stuff is still in a storage locker. This is by design because we moved into a furnished house, and we were planning to move our gear when we finally purchased our house. The drawback to this strategy, however, is that all of our holiday decorations (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter) is buried deep in the storage locker somewhere. Fortunately for us, Julie's parents had an artificial tree, lights and ornaments stored in the basement of this house. Christmas was Julie's mom Barb's favorite holiday, and she always tried to make it special for the family. Using her tree, lights and decorations is comforting and special for all of us. Julie and I set up the tree and the lights, and then we all took turns adding ornaments to the tree. There are some special ornaments from the past, some that are funny and some from relatives long since passed. Inspired, I even decorated the outside of the house with lights and ornaments. Barb might not be with us in body this year, but her spirit and her memory lives on for all of us. Her decorations, lights and trees remind us of what a great and generous woman she was. 2. Favorite Christmas and Holiday Movies https://youtu.be/4fyS5CLBgyM I have really made a conscious effort to NOT watch much television and movies in 2017. Sure, I watched Taboo (and even did some podcasts about the show Taboo earlier this year), Game of Thrones and The Punisher, but overall, I have done a pretty good job limiting my time in front of a television or movie screen. This time of year, however, I make an exception. With Ryan home from college, we gathered together as a family to watch some classic Christmas and Holiday movies. There have been some great ones over the years, and the following movies are our family favorites: • Planes, Trains and Automobiles (I seriously know almost every line of this movie) • Christmas Vacation • Elf • A Christmas Story We have watched two of the four movies so far this season, and we will have to find the time to watch the last two. It is easy to forget how funny these movies actually are, so if you need a break and want a good belly laugh this time of year, check out these classics. You won't even shoot your eye out, kid! https://youtu.be/9jyCfRHumHU 3. Wooddale Church Christmas Program For the past few years, we have gone to Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. This year, Julie, Danny, Ryan, David and Jenny (brother and sister-in-law) went to Wooddale's Christmas Program. The church is massive, and they had a full orchestra, choir, organ and even interpretive dancers. The program consisted of the following songs: • Overture "Canticle of Glorias" • Gloria in Excelsis Deo • O Come, All Ye Faithful • White Christmas • How Great Our Joy • Pat a Pan • Noe! Noe! • Fum, Fum, Fum • The First Noel • Angels We Have Heard on High • The Christmas Story • Ecolgue for Piano and Strings Opus 10 • No Eye Had Seen/All is Well • Amazing Grace It was very profession and extremely inspirational. Some of the songs had a Celtic feel to them, and the grand finale included a Scottish man playing bagpipes in traditional dress. It was amazing to hear, especially since it was my dad's and Barb's favorite hymn. If you have a chance to go to a church program, you should. It is a chance to decompress, tune out the commercialism of the season, sing carols and hymns, and share in the Christmas message with family and friends. https://youtu.be/euWfTiYwRB0 4. Decorating Christmas Cookies When Julie and I were in high school, we would decorate sugar cookies with Julie's family, her cousin, her aunt and her uncle every year. It was a lot of fun (and it tasted good too)! This year, we gathered once again to decorate Christmas cookies. It was a team effort: we made dinner, Julie's dad and fiance Sue made the sugar cookies, and Julie made the frosting. We had a great dinner, and then we got down to business decorating the cookies. It was a lot of fun, and we had a bunch of laughs as some of our "artists" got creative with gingerbread men and Santa cookies. In fact, you can see one of those cookies in the picture above (just don't point it out to your kids). I am sure eating tons of cookies covered in the world's best frosting didn't help my healthy lifestyle goals, but it was worth it! We'll have to do it again next year! 5. Christmas Eve Meal My ancestors on my mother;s side came from Poland and Czechoslovakia. This year, I did a little research about Polish Christmas traditions. In Polish households, Christmas Eve is an extremely important day. The Polish people celebrate Christmas by preparing a big meal called "Wigilia." This traditional meal is a big deal. According to the Polish Women's Alliance of America, the wigilia consists "of twelve meatless dishes, and includes many kinds of fish, beet or mushroom soup, various dishes made from cabbage, mushrooms, or potatoes, pierogi, followed by dried fruit compote and pastries for dessert." The meal does not start until the first star is seen in the sky. Like Polish homes, we traditionally have a big meal on Christmas Eve. Unlike the Polish dinner, we eat meat (and lots of it). We have adopted something my side of the family started doing years ago: fondue. We will cook shrimp, beef, and vegetables in boiling oil or broth (we have tried both). We will make a cheese fondue and dip bread into it (big hit around Green Bay Packer fans), and we will have a dessert fondue with chocolate, marsh mellows, strawberries and pound cake. The beauty of the Christmas Eve fondue is the social aspect of the meal. It takes time to cook the food, and it is a lot of fun to talk with everyone, joke around a bit, and yes, steal someone else's meat or shrimp (accidentally, of course)! It takes some time to prep: cutting the meat, breads, pound cake and vegetables; preparing the various fondue pots; and gathering the various dipping sauces for the cooked food. A few words of caution before you do fondue: list text hereThe oil, cheese and chocolate are VERY hot. Be careful around the fondue pots! list text hereThings splatter and spill, so use a disposable table cloth. list text hereBe careful using the fondue forks. Someone usually ends up spearing their finger by accident. list text hereThere usually is a lot of clean-up after the meal, so be prepared for that! This year, we are planning on a smaller meal on Christmas Eve, but we will eat very well. We will celebrate Christmas Eve dinner with Julie, Danny, Ryan and me, and we are eating steak, shrimp, twice baked potatoes and salad. It will be a great dinner! How about you? What are your Christmas Traditions? What do you do with your friends and family? I would love to know, and maybe we will incorporate some of your traditions into our Christmas and Holiday Celebrations. Feel free to share your Christmas Traditions as a comment on this blog post. This is a busy time of year. Before we let the moment get away from us, I would like to thank you for following Small Scale Life. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you and your support. Please be safe this holiday season. Enjoy each moment, and be kind to someone. In case we haven't said it yet, Julie, Danny, Ryan and I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It's the second instalment of the PON Road Show! With Ryan on the road covering the WHL Playoffs, he enlists the PON Black Aces Simon, TSN 1040's Stu Walters and Grant to sit around the hotel room and discuss this week in hockey. The biggest news (for Canucks fans) is the signing of Brock Boeser. Brock's NCAA season finished Friday night and by Saturday morning, he was a signed Vancouver Canuck and made his debut in hometown against the slumping Minnesota Wild. The Brock hype has begun and they discuss what this means for the Canucks, their youth movement and the rebuild. They discuss Willie D's future with the Canucks. Grant makes a solid case to keep him around based on his positive development with the Canucks and the young kids on the team. Has his tough love and forcing the kids to earn their spots finally paying off? Is it time to cut him loose or keep him around when he's needed most? They also discuss Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk's comments about Sidney Crosby and his regular comments speaking against his own players and their opponents. Are Melnyk's comments a positive or a negative for the fans, the team and the players? Or is it a distraction and a cause of concern? Leon Draisaitl also comes up. He is leading the Oilers in scoring behind Connor McDavid and has become a HUGE part of the Oilers roster. They discuss his development and the different approaches taken with Draisaitl compared to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Finally, they discuss Brad Marchand's amazing season with the Boston Bruins. Going from noted cheap shot artist to Hart Trophy candidate, what changed? Will it last? And what does this mean going forward now that the Bruins are slowly becoming his team?
