Shakespeare famously never attended university. But not only has his work inspired generations of scholarship, his plays, too, are filled with scholarly characters. Shakespeare, it seems, took an interest in learning. Perhaps that's why so many people come to Shakespeare for wisdom that they can apply to their own lives. While leading the University of California, Santa Cruz's Shakespeare Workshop, professor and dramaturg Sean Keilen noticed that people look to Shakespeare and the humanities to answer questions like “Who am I? Why am I here? And how should I live?” Keilen's book, Shakespeare's Scholars: Three Lessons from the Liberal Arts, illustrates how learned characters from Hamlet, Love's Labor's Lost, and The Tempest more can guide us to those answers —some through their wisdom, and others through their own flawed judgment. In this episode, Keilen shares vital lessons from Shakespeare's fictional scholars in humility, self-knowledge, and perhaps most importantly, forging connection with others. Father tells us that these words are the essence of our human condition.
There was a time in America when shipping a dead body by railroad was as routine as sending a trunk of luggage... until somebody misplaced the coffin. In this episode of The Box of Oddities, Kat and Jethro uncover the strange and surprisingly common history of America's "silent passengers"—human remains transported across the country by rail. Discover the newspaper stories of lost coffins, bodies sent to the wrong families, funeral trains delayed by storms, and the unsettling realities of moving the dead before modern embalming. It's a forgotten chapter of railroad history that's equal parts fascinating, unsettling, and absurd. Then Kat takes a detour into one of history's lighter mysteries: Why is Connecticut called the Nutmeg State? Did crafty merchants really sell fake wooden nutmegs? Along the way, you'll discover the surprising origins of state nicknames like the Tar Heel State, the Sooner State, the Badger State, and more—revealing how folklore, history, commerce, and a little creative marketing shaped the identities of the United States. If you love forgotten history, strange true stories, bizarre Americana, railroad oddities, unusual facts, and conversations that wander gloriously off the rails, you've found your people. Because sometimes the weirdest journey... begins after the passengers stop breathing. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week, Da7e and Neil are surrendering immediately as Rhaenyra finally makes her way to toward that big spikey chair on House of the Dragon. In The Calm [04:40], they analyze the show's shaky relationship with the concept of honor, discuss this episode's original purpose as a season 2 finale, and throw their support behind the Emmy campaign for Emma D'Arcy. Then in The Storm [01:06:04], they look ahead to what happens now that the Iron Throne has changed hands. And they engage in debate about Daeron, who still may be useful in the weeks to come.Next week, House of the Dragon continues with a third episode that may also be more of a season premiere. Either way, there will be more polygons to discuss on Monday. To interact with the show, send your comments and questions to stormofspoilers@gmail.com, and follow us on Twitter/X and Bluesky @Da7eandNeil.You can also support Da7e and Neil and get all kinds of bonus content (from the Game of Thrones era to the LOST rewatch to our Twin Peaks rewatch project to our current Adventure Pod and Dark watch project) by subscribing to our Patreon here: patreon.com/Da7eandNeil
Was this the best weekend of the year? The gang is recapping Drag Me To Brunch and all the pride.
This episode began as an investigation into Sigmund Freud, Edward Bernays, propaganda, psychoanalysis, and the hidden machinery through which modern perception management came to be. But somewhere along the way, it became something much more personal. In Starlight Sickness, Kelly traces the strange lineage between Freud's abandonment of the seduction theory, Bernays's engineering of consent, and the ways power moves harm out of view by relocating it into the minds of the harmed. From the origins of modern public relations to the hall of mirrors inside ufology, this episode asks what happens when the tools we use to interpret reality also become the tools used to obscure it. How do we practice discernment without losing trust in our own perception? How do we make room for complexity without allowing complexity to become fog? And what does accountability look like when the story you were living inside begins to collapse? In light of recent allegations against her former best friend and creative partner Jay Christopher King, Kelly turns the same questions back on herself, beginning the process of untangling what happened, what she believed, what she may have gotten wrong, and what this community is owed now. This is an episode about gaslighting, trauma, consent engineering, ufology, and the terrifying difficulty of finding solid ground in a world built to manage perception. Topics explored: Sigmund Freud | Edward Bernays | propaganda | psychoanalysis | gaslighting | consent engineering | perception management | public relations | the unconscious | repression | seduction theory | the Oedipus complex | Jeffrey Masson | Freud Archives | Emma Eckstein | Wilhelm Fliess | institutional betrayal | therapeutic language | expert authority | trauma | memory | interpretation | accountability | narrative control | invisible government | torches of freedom | United Fruit Company | Guatemala coup | ufology | experiencer communities | anomalous experience | sexual trauma | abduction narratives | vulnerability and power | Jay Christopher King | The Experiencer Group | spiritual abuse | trust and betrayal | epistemic instability | discernment | reality testing | | truth and coherence | symbols and meaning | systems of control | manufactured consent | moral injury | the hall of mirrors Referenced in this Episode: Addressing the Allegations Against My Former Creative Partner, Jay Christopher King Starlight Sickness — Helico Tele Propaganda — Edward Bernays (1928) The Engineering of Consent — Edward Bernays (1947) The Aetiology of Hysteria — Sigmund Freud (1896) The Interpretation of Dreams — Sigmund Freud (1900) Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality — Sigmund Freud (1905) The Assault on Truth: Freud's Suppression of the Seduction Theory — Jeffrey Masson (1984) Sigmund Freud and the Jewish Mystical Tradition — David Bakan (1958) Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator — Ryan Holiday (2012) I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell — Tucker Max (2006) Support The Show Patreon: inquirywithkellychase.comSubstack: inquirywithkellychase.substack.com Connect with Kelly Website: kellychase.mediaX: @kellychasemediaInstagram: @kellychasemedia TIMESTAMPS 05:27 Propaganda and The True Ruling Power 09:20 Freudian Ick10:58 Jeffrey Masson, Heretic 13:18 Sigmund Freud and The Source of the Nile 17:49 Wilhelm Fliess, A Passionate Friendship 19:55 Emma Eckstein and The Stronger Sex 22:06 A Little Sleight of Hand24:21 The Oedipus Complex and The Nucleus of Neuroses 32:02 The Baby and the Bathwater 33:21 Trust the Experts 34:44 You Can't Do Anything With This Information 37:54 The Torches of Freedom 40:31 The Coup 43:11 A Koan 48:15 The Abstract Becomes Horrifyingly Personal 52:21 Responding to Jay Christopher King's Statement 01:01:03 Fall 2023 01:05:21 The Epistemic Black Boxes of Ufology Learn more about your ad choices. Russ Cook, better known as the Hardest Geezer, became famous for running the length of Africa. 352 days. 10,000 miles. The first person ever to do it. But before all of that, he was a teenager scrubbing a Waitrose toilet at 4am, opening a cupboard to find a single tin of new potatoes, and hiding a gambling debt from his girlfriend. In this conversation, Jake goes back to before Africa - to the years of directionlessness, the arrogance that masked insecurity, the run home from a nightclub in Brighton, and the chance encounter with a cyclist in Kenya that changed everything. They also get into the question that sits beneath all of it: is Russ running towards something great, or away from something painful? And now he's a new father - how does that shift what he's willing to risk?Plus: why he won't take the Leeds Ironman lightly despite barely managing three lengths of a pool.Bulldog
After the Norman Conquest, many Anglo-Saxon nobles, clergy, and warriors refused to submit and instead chose exile, fleeing not just to Scotland and Scandinavia, but all the way to Constantinople and the Eastern Roman Empire. The episode explores the remarkable tradition of around 10,000 English exiles traveling by ship, receiving lands from the emperor, and helping form English communities far from home, even in places remembered as a kind of early “New England” on the Black Sea. Steve Guerra and Patrick Young also trace how these exiles entered imperial service through the Varangian Guard, showing that the fall of Anglo-Saxon England did not mean the end of its people, identity, or Christian inheritance. For Semiotician Uklan Tel, the discovery of the object in the vaults of the New Archives was a gift he could scarcely have hoped for. The Holy City, walled and impenetrable, had fascinated him for so long. He'd pored over the Marieldan documents and artifacts that the Archives had collected over the years so many times that his name repeated in the access cards like a prayer . But here was something new - misfiled, overlooked - that had evaded his eye all this time. He was starting to take notes for a book. We could not be more excited to unveil the Marielda 10th Anniversary Vinyl Soundtrack edition in all its unfolding, kaleidoscopic color, and let you know that it is now available to preorder at lostincult.co.uk/marielda. A very limited number of signed copies still remain, to be followed by a second, unsigned run. This extra-special edition, which began in early ideas and sketches six long years ago, is based on concepts by Annie Johnston-Glick and illustrated by Elemei, and is created in collaboration with the British publisher and designworks Lost in Cult. The centerpiece, alongside the full Marielda soundtrack, is the "star book", an unfolding, layered diorama showing four scenes from that fateful High Sun Day, secured by a red ribbon. This object exists in-fiction and tells a story, discovered in the cavernous vaults of The New Archives by Semiotician Uklan Tel, and shipped (much to the chagrin of the Archives' Exceptional Loans division) to a friend in Velas. In addition to the vinyl and star book, contained inside are two enamel pins showing coinage of ancient Hieron, as well as five bone-white d6 dice emblazoned with the sigil of the second god to rule the holy city. Alongside Tel's covering letter, you can also find eight pieces of Marieldan paper ephemera: an undelivered postcard bought by a holidaymaker at a pleasure garden, a double-sided broadsheet of Marielda's newspaper "The Charioteer", and six other mysterious pieces from the City of First Light at a time of great change. Oh, and there's also a 7" vinyl with a plain red label, and we'll say no more on that for now. We've already been blown away by yesterday's response to this project from our Patrons, which has really helped demonstrate that there's an audience for physical media projects from Friends at the Table. It has been an absolute joy to return to this world in collaboration with such incredible artists and designers. Writing in character as gods, citizens, and tourists to the holy city (as well as people thousands of years later, trying to make sense of what they hold in their hands) has been a real treat and we are so excited to finally - finally! - get to share it with you.

The prosecution's most powerful storytelling tool just got taken away. Twelve and a half hours of financial crimes testimony painted Alex Murdaugh as a desperate thief who would do anything to keep his world from collapsing. The South Carolina Supreme Court said it was too much, too inflammatory, and went far beyond what was needed to establish motive. The retrial has to be “efficient” with no inflammatory detail of limited probative value. That changes the entire shape of the case. The prosecution's physical evidence has always been circumstantial. No weapon. No confession. No eyewitness. The kennel video and Alex's lie about being at the scene are the anchors. But the first time around, those anchors sat inside a narrative about a man who stole from disabled clients and defrauded his own law partners. That context made everything feel inevitable. Without it, the jury has to reach guilty on the physical case with far less emotional ammunition. The AG is also floating the death penalty for the first time, and the defense is claiming statistics favor acquittal on retrial. Both sides are already fighting over timeline, venue, and who testifies. Bob Motta on whether the prosecution can still get a conviction. Sarah is trying something new to keep John's attention.
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries lost the midterm gavel yesterday in New York's primary elections when his endorsed candidates - all of them incumbents - LOST. The democratic socialists have taken control of the democrat party and now there is only one way to win: By being as extreme, as toxic, as unpalatable and Trump-hating as possible in order to appeal to the rabid progressive base. Rep Dan Goldman loses his House seat and gets a hot cup of antisemitism to wash it down as Harry Enten marvels at the most extreme political shift he's seen in his lifetime.
I made the rookie mistake and bought a deal outside my buy box. A $40,000 rehab turned into $85,000. The property sat on the market for 12 months! I dropped the price, refinanced it, turned it into a short-term rental, and eventually sold it three years later at a $70,000 loss.In this episode, I break down what a bad deal actually takes from you.We go over:- The $40,000 rehab that became $85,000, and the one thing I missed during due diligence that caused it- Why the $70,000 wasn't the number that kept me up at night- The moment most new investors quit, and why it has nothing to do with money- What a professional poker player taught me about losing in real estate- What to do right now if you're sitting on a deal that's gone sidewaysIf you're in a deal that's gone sideways, or you took a loss and you're starting to wonder whether this is even worth it, the answer is not to be more careful in some general sense. The Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast: Lead Like Never Before
Most leaders don't think of themselves as creative. Al Gordon says that's the lie keeping you stuck. Al, founder of Renaissance, lead pastor of SAINT in East London, talks about why creativity is the church's lost superpower, how stress and algorithms are quietly killing your imagination, and what it actually takes to unlock creativity in yourself, your team, and your church.
Four months ago, the U.S. and Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran. Supporters predicted a decisive victory that would curb Iran's nuclear ambitions and reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. Instead, the war became a costly stalemate. Iran's power continued, the conflict dragged on, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted global energy markets, sending economic shockwaves around the world. Now, a ceasefire has ended the fighting. But critics argue that the agreement gives Iran major concessions in exchange for empty promises about its nuclear program that prove difficult to enforce. Today, Karim Sadjadpour returns to the podcast to examine the end of the Iran war. Why did the Trump administration agree to this deal, and will history remember it as a necessary compromise or a strategic failure?
