Diwali crackers are about to add to the already dangerously polluted air in the national capital region. So how would it be if you could fly over the smog for an important meeting, in a tenth of the time it would take to go from Gurugram to Connaught Place, say, and pay about the same as what an Uber ride would cost. InterGlobe Enterprises, the company that operates India's top airline Indigo, and Archer Aviation Inc., a Silicon Valley company that's close to commercialising its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, said yesterday they have partnered to launch and operate an all-electric air taxi service in India. Rahul Bhatia, Group Managing Director of InterGlobe, and Nikhil Goel, Chief Commercial Officer of Archer, signed an MOU to form a proposed partnership to do this, according to a press release yesterday. Based on Archer's all-electric aircraft, called Midnight, they aim to bring a low-noise electric air taxi service that is cost-competitive with ground transportation, according to the press release. The two companies aim to work with select in-country business partners to operate Archer's aircraft, finance and build vertiport infrastructure, and train pilots and other personnel needed for these operations. The partnership also plans to finance the purchase of up to 200 of Archer's Midnight aircraft for the India operations. Midnight is a piloted, four-passenger electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft designed for quick back-to-back flights with as little as 10 minutes of charging in between flights, according to the company's website. Archer is working to get certification for Midnight's commercial readiness by late 2024 and start operations in 2025. In India, which would the second international market for the company after the UAE, the goal is for a passenger on an InterGlobe-Archer flight to be able to fly the 27-km Delhi trip from Connaught Place to Gurugram, typically taking 60 to 90 minutes by car, in approximately 7 minutes. InterGlobe Archer will also explore other use cases for the electric aircraft in India, including cargo, logistics, medical and emergency services, as well as private company and charter services. “India is one of, if not the largest opportunity for eVTOL aircraft utilization in the world, as it is home to the world's largest population, and its largest cities face some of the greatest congestion challenges in the world,” Adam Goldstein, Founder and CEO of Archer said in the press release. Founded in 2018, Archer is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and has about $461 million in cash reserves currently. Its investors include automotive giant Stellantis, ARK Investment Management, United Airlines and Boeing. InterGlobe and Archer expect to start with operations in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru first, Nikhil Goel, Archer's chief commercial officer said in the press release. Meanwhile, India's hope for a made-in-India eVTOL is pinned to the success of the e200, being developed by ePlane Company in Chennai. The e200, in comparison with Midnight, is expected to be one of the world's most compact two-seater planes – carrying one pilot and one passenger – and capable of vertical take-off and landing in an area not much bigger than what it takes to park a mid-sized sedan. The plane is designed to be light enough, at around 600 kg, and have a range of 200 km per charge, and also be able to land on the average urban concrete rooftop. ePlane's founder and CEO, Professor Satya Chakravarthy, envisions hundreds of these air taxis flying over our cities. This involves achieving the safety levels of airplanes and cost economics of cars. And he thinks ePlane will get there. The company is also in talks with potential strategic investors, including some large automakers, to raise more money. “Where we are today is we have shown flight tests of a subscale prototype, which we are now going to commercialise for cargo applications,” Satya said.

eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing) or ‘air taxis' refer to aircraft that use electric power to take off and land vertically, and are particularly useful in urban areas afflicted with traffic congestion. In this episode, we talk to Adam Goldstein, CEO and Founder at Archer Aviation. He shares how the company focuses on designing and developing eVTOLs, which they believe will “unlock the skies” and enable everyone to reimagine how they live, travel and manage time. Goldstein says these vehicles – which can carry four passengers and a pilot – will not only change the way people move but also allow people to get a lot of time back. “Imagine the trips that you've been taking in your car – it would take you 60, 90, even 120 minutes of sitting in traffic. But you could instead fly to your destination in five or 10 minutes”, he asserts. Such a future is actually closer than we think. Public policy in the United States often overlooks wealth. We tend to design, debate and measure our economic policies with regard to income alone, which blinds us to the ways prosperity and precarity tangibly function in people's lives. And that blind spot can ultimately prevent us from addressing social inequality at its roots.Take the debate over student loan cancellation. Cancellation is often framed as an economically regressive policy — an elite giveaway of sorts — with the majority of benefits going to individuals toward the top end of the income distribution. But that distributive picture flips when you look at wealth instead of income. One recent paper found that if the federal government decided to forgive up to $50,000 in student loan debt, the average person in the 20th to 40th percentiles for household assets would receive more than four times as much debt cancellation as the average person in the top 10 percent.Louise Seamster is a sociologist at the University of Iowa whose work focuses on the intersection of wealth, race, education and inequality. She's one of the sharpest minds studying the way systems of wealth creation and depletion shape everything from the benefits of higher education to the barriers to racial equality to the nature of democratic citizenship. And her cutting-edge research on the student debt crisis and the racial wealth gap served as a major source of inspiration for Senator Elizabeth Warren's $50,000 loan forgiveness plan. This conversation begins with a discussion of the student debt crisis in particular: what it's like to live with crushing levels of debt, the debate over whether cancellation is fair to those who have paid off their loans, why you can't truly understand the student debt crisis without understanding the wealth dynamics that undergird it, how loan forgiveness would alter the racial wealth gap, what an entirely different model for funding higher education would look like and more. But this discussion is also more broadly about what it means to think in terms of wealth — and its inverse, debt — and what a radically different picture that reveals about the American economy and society.Mentioned:“Racialized Debts: Racial Exclusion From Credit Tools and Information Networks” by Raphaël Charron-Chénier and Louise Seamster“An Administrative Path to Student Debt Cancellation” by Luke Herrine“Black Debt, White Debt” by Louise Seamster“Student Debt Cancellation IS Progressive: Correcting Empirical and Conceptual Errors” by Charlie Eaton, Adam Goldstein, Laura Hamilton and Frederick Wherry“Student Debt Forgiveness Options: Implications for Policy and Racial Equity” by Raphaël Charron-Chenier, Louise Seamster, Tom Shapiro and Laura SullivanBook Recommendations:The Color of Money by Mehrsa BaradaranA Pound of Flesh by Alexes HarrisThe Sum of Us by Heather McGheeThis episode is guest-hosted by Tressie McMillan Cottom, a sociologist and writer whose work focuses on higher education policy, popular culture, race, beauty and more. Episode 62: CRT and Education: Five Things for Parents to Consider

All Things

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2021 39:00

Critical Race Theory (CRT) has been in the news nonstop for a couple years now. The secular justice theory is making headlines most recently because of the wave of states introducing legislation to ban CRT in the classroom. How should parents navigate volatile school board meetings and contentious social media posts? On this episode of All Things we look at five things to consider. Here is just a glimpse of all five—tune in to hear each point in greater depth and detail. First, know that parties on both sides benefit from making this a polarizing debate, based on anger and fear. But we don't have to give way to tribalism and be exploited by this conversation turning divisive. Second, we need to acknowledge that CRT has grown in popularity because of a vacuum created by our unwillingness or inability as a nation (or church) to engage our deeply racist past and how that has adversely affected our present. Third, if you think CRT is impossible to define, you are not alone. The conversation requires patience and grace because terms are used without consensus. Even the way the segments of the church have used terms and engaged in the conversation has greatly shifted over the last 5-7 years. Why is that? Fourth, we should be so engaged with justice as described and called for in the Bible that CRT pales in comparison. Biblical justice is beautiful, worship-inducing, and able to provide healing and a future for our communities. Christians ought to pursue it with joy, tenacity, and hope. And fifth, practically speaking, all education options will fall short. Whether your child is educated in a public school, private school, or homeschool, each method has its benefits and its deficits. Do not outsource cultural and justice issues to someone else, rather engage them as you disciple your children. In the final analysis, CRT falls short and asks too little of us, while the Scriptures call us to joyfully surrender all we have in our love for God and love for others. Unity in diversity is God's design for the church. Are we pursuing both? Biblical justice allows Christians to offer warmth, repentance, reconciliation, and goodness to our hurting communities. It's our path forward. May we engage. Does the thought of traveling with 4 kids, all under the age of five years old, terrify you? It terrifies Jill Devine. She was supposed to take her girls to see her best friend who lives about 6 hours away, but the trip didn’t happen due to COVID. Jill was sweating leading up to the trip wondering how she was going to travel solo with a 4 and 2-year-old. Marissa and Adam Goldstein aren’t terrified. In fact, they embrace it. Marissa and Adam have two sets of twins under the age of 5: Raya, Efi, Noa, and Eyva. Marissa and Adam love traveling, and they weren’t going to let having children stop them from doing what they loved. So, they made a pledge to keep traveling no matter what! In fact, their oldest twins visited 15 countries before they were potty trained. Their entire family are lovers of travel, food, and community service. The Goldstein’s goal is to help other families find inspiration in their everyday life, whether they’re looking for advice on what to do next or trying to find the will to just get out and go! Their website, Twinsonthegox2, contains helpful tips and tricks when it comes to traveling with kids, among other great parenting content. The Goldstein family split their time living in both Vietnam and Boston. While exploring remote villages in Southeast Asia with their family, they grew a bond with local families and fell in love with the beautiful art forms they have passed down amongst generations. Marissa and Adam wanted to share these traditional handicrafts with a larger audience, give back to the communities they came to love, and build a strong community their selves. So, they launched Rafi Nova! The company originally launched as a travel accessory brand, but as many companies that launched in 2020, pivots had to be made because of COVID-19. They were able to quickly come up with a plan and design for face masks and they continue to improve that design to meet the needs of all individuals, while also donating masks to frontline workers. Marissa joined Jill on the podcast to talk about parenting and traveling with two sets of twins, living in two different countries, the development and launch of their business, and how they are navigating the pandemic. https://www.instagram.com/twinsonthegox2/ https://www.instagram.com/rafinova_go/ Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth, so she created the Supermom Shoutout. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Jessica of St. Louis. Deb nominated her and said: Jessica is a friend and rising photographer. She is a single mom of a teenage daughter with epilepsy. She is self-made and self-taught, and truly a fighter and hard worker. She has maintained a home-daycare for years and recently took up photography as a hobby. She is now retiring her home daycare and launching her full-time photography career, JS Photography STL. She also does quite a bit of volunteer work for On Angels Wings. Jessica – YOU are seen and YOU are supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. There are many heroes that have made a substantial impact during the global pandemic. Veterans of sustainable product manufacturing, Co-Founders Marissa and Adam Goldstein, who founded Rafi Nova named after their two sets of twins and travel partners: Raya, Efi, Noa, and Eyva, quickly pivoted their business to give back. Known for their handcrafted bags, they began making 100% cotton face masks and donated 150,000 masks to frontline workers. Rafi Nova is a social enterprise on a mission to create products that meet the ever-changing needs of families while connecting global communities. Founded as a fair-trade fashion brand to equip adventurous families with sustainably made travel bags, the company shifted focus to face masks to solve the urgent needs of families and communities. Marissa Goldstein is a proud mother to two sets of twins and CEO leading sustainable fair-trade travel accessory brand, Rafi Nova. As an avid traveler, Marissa founded Rafi Nova to encourage families to travel while creating meaningful connections with global communities. While the pandemic shifted her company's production to face masks it expanded the company's ability to connect and protect communities and support social causes committed to inclusivity. Under Marissa's leadership, Rafi Nova will have donated more than 150,000 masks to organizations in need and workers on the front line by the year's end. Prior to launching Rafi Nova, Marissa and her husband, Adam, worked in the sustainable product manufacturing industry. After earning an MBA at Babson University, Marissa and her family of four (at the time) split their time in Vietnam and Boston, MA. While in Vietnam in 2017, Marissa noticed a group of Hmong women were selling handmade clothes made from brightly colored textiles. Goldstein felt compelled to tell those people’s stories and incorporate it into her business. In this week's episode 32, I discuss some of my key takeaways from the conference, which included: Why practitioners need to re-think compliance - how Adam Goldstein in my session on 'thriving or surviving' with the super reforms discussed the approach of 'compliance as a strategy' post 1 July 2017; How well we've evolved our understanding of the super reforms in 12 months from the last conference, but we still have many lingering problems to resolve and/or seeking further clarity; and the ATO's challenge with TBAR requirements in trying to be everything to everyone and why I can see it creating future problems for the regulator.

Jeff Fisher, Adam Goldstein, Chris Fry, and Bull Gervasi of Policy of 3/December 28, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Jeff Fisher, Chris Fry, Bull Gervasi, and Adam Goldstein of the band Policy of 3. Policy of 3 began as Matter of Fact in South Jersey in the late 1980s. By the early ’90s, they formalized their line-up, changed their name to Po3, and began developing their unique sound. While often categorized as an emo band (as in “emotional hardcore,” not the pseudo-sensitive boy music that was erroneously and pervasively termed emo a few years ago) both then and now, the band members have always been reluctant to embrace that categorization. Policy of 3 was a band that confronted political and social issues, unlike many bands termed emo. While the band’s presentation of these concerns was sometimes seen through the prism of personal and inward-looking lyrics, they sidestepped navel-gazing and made materials on social and political issues (including vegan/vegetarianism and animal rights) available at their gigs. As well, Po3 played many shows benefitting a variety of social/political activist groups. Over the course of their existence as a band, they did two full U.S. tours (once being paid an impressive $8.20 for playing a show) and a European tour on totally DIY and ethical terms. As well, they released two 7″s, an LP, and a CD collecting all of their material. As individuals, the four members of the band have retained a tremendously positive view of both their time in the band and the international hardcore punk scene they were active participants in. They remain friends and cherish what they did in the time they had together. Policy of 3 broke up in 1995, but the lessons learned, friends made, and experiences had while they were together played a significant role in shaping these four men into who they are today. This interview marked the first time the members of Po3 ever publicly or privately discussed their break-up, which each respective band member had ruminated over for nineteen years. For anyone who’s familiar with the band or who may be friends with any of the members, you may find the latter part of this interview to be very emotional. The air was very thick with feeling as each member talked about the band’s demise and what it meant to them. I’ve wanted to interview the Po3 since I started this project, but I didn’t think it would be possible to get all four members in the place due to where Jeff and Adam now live. The four had not been in the same place at the same time since 2005. I was thrilled to be able to talk to them and I’m very happy with the lengthy interview we achieved. For me, Policy of 3 personified what I loved (and still love) about the DIY punk scene. They were, and remain, inspiring and terribly earnest individuals.   The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY!

The crash, which happened shortly before midnight, occurred during takeoff. The crew was attempting to abort the takeoff because of what they thought was a blown tire. The NTSB also reported that accident investigators reviewing the recording heard sounds consistent with a tire blowout. The crew was unable to stop the aircraft before it departed the runway. The plane struck a series of antennas and lights, crashed through a fence, crossed a nearby highway, and came to rest on an embankment where it burst into flames. The crash and subsequent fire killed both flight crew members and two of the four passengers. The two survivors, Barker and Goldstein, escaped the aircraft but suffered severe burns.
