Colombian energy giant Ecopetrol has polluted hundreds of sites with oil, including water sources and biodiverse wetlands, the BBC World Service has found. However, as detailed in a new documentary produced and directed by Owen Pinnell of the BBC: "Exposing the toxic record of Colombia's oil giant | BBC World Service Documentaries,:" there are far more issues involving Colombia's Ecopetrol beyond just pollution the region's water sources such as potential links to paramilitary groups. As quoted in the documentary: "Matthew Smith, an oil analyst and financial journalist based in Colombia, says he does not believe Ecopetrol managers are involved in threats by armed groups. But he says there is an "immense" overlap between former paramilitary groups and the private security sector. Private security firms often employ former members of paramilitary groups and compete for lucrative contracts to protect oil facilities, he says. Whistleblower and former employee of Ecopetrol, Mr Olarte shared internal Ecopetrol emails (now named "The Iguana Papers") showing that in 2018, the company paid a total of $65m to more than 2,800 private security companies. "There is always that risk of some sort of contagion between the private security companies, the types of people they employ, and their desire to continually maintain their contract," Mr Smith says. He says this could potentially even include kidnapping or murdering community leaders or environmental defenders in order to "ensure that Ecopetrol's operations proceed smoothly". And so, journalists Emily Hart and Richard McColl of the Colombia Calling podcast, have the fantastic opportunity to discuss what it meant to film this documentary, meet the courageous people who were and are willing to speak out about some of the crimes being committed in the region of Barrancabermeja, Santander and how the whole area is being affected by this. "That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run." - Forrest Gump I'm extremely excited to welcome Rob Pope, the real life Forrest Gump, to this week's show! Over the last few years, Rob has taken on the EPIC challenge of recreating Forrest Gump's famous run. Over 15,000 miles across the United States 5 times, he tested the limits of his own endurance and experienced the U.S. to the absolute fullest. Over his year and a half adventure he experienced highs and lows, received major support from strangers along the way, and ran through some of the most iconic places in the country. The human connections he made, along with the places he explored were life changing. Completing the challenge was absolutely unprecedented. Today's episode is all about this INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE. Rob shares how one of his last conversations with his mother about "Doing one thing that makes a difference in this world" inspired this challenge. He also chats about the adventures he had along the way, along with the obstacles he had to overcome (including a torn quadricep..yikes!). We also talk a lot about one of my favorite subjects....Tom Hanks! Please check out Rob's website. He would love your help supporting two excellent charities- Peace Direct and World Wildlife Fund. Now I'm going to read parts of that article. So here goes and I quote: "According to a BBC analysis of 10 years of data from the Gallup World Poll, women are getting angrier. Every year the poll surveys more than 120,000 people in more than 150 countries asking, among other things, what emotions they felt for a lot of the previous day. When it comes to anger and stress however, the gap between men and women is widening. In 2012 both genders reported anger and stress at similar levels. Nine years later women are angrier. And there was a particular divergence around the time of the pandemic. Psychiatrist Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar believes this is the result of tensions that have emerged as more women become educated, employed and economically independent in countries all over the world including poorer ones. "At the same time, they are tethered down by archaic, patriarchal systems and culture," she says. "The dissonance between a patriarchal system at home and an emancipated woman outside of home causes a lot of anger." Every Friday evening at rush hour in Chennai in India, she witnesses this dynamic in action. "You see the men relax, going to a tea shop, having a smoke. And you find the women hurrying to the bus or train station. They're thinking about what to cook. Many women start chopping vegetables on their way back home on the train." In the past, she says, it wasn't considered appropriate for women to say they are angry, but that's changing. "Now there is a little bit more ability to express their emotions, so the anger is more." Many more women than men said they were stressed in Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, Cyprus and Greece. In Brazil almost six in 10 women said they had felt stressed for much of the previous day, compared with just under four in 10 men. Many women in the USA and elsewhere have now reached a place where they are able to say, "No more! And they're using their anger to do it," "You need rage and anger," agrees Ginette Azcona at UN Women. "Sometimes you need these, to shake things up - and have people pay attention and listen." unquote. Well Mac thanks for the donation and topic. Anger makes people pay attention and listen to women. Especially the white knights. Ten years of smart phone adoption means that women aren't getting as much attention in real life like they used to so they are angry. Being upset and acting out forces people to pay attention to you because at the very least they perceive you as a threat. It's very interesting hearing about all the difficulties and problems faced by Kyle while quarantined on his ship, and how they were dealt with. My apologies for not releasing this sooner, but one of the topics brought up in the interview was the tragic shooting down of Iranian Flight 655 in the 80s. I got lost heading down a rabbit hole and looking up hundreds of pages of documents and reports on that topic. It's a complicated event and time, and I think I must leave it at that for now. Becoming a parent changes who you are as a person including your brain, behavior, and sense of self. How do you stay engaged with your children and your values as a parent? How do you open to and navigate the emotions of parenthood? In today's episode of Your Life in Process, Diana and award-winning science journalist Melissa Hogenboom discuss navigating the dynamic processes of parenthood with the principles of psychological flexibility. About Melissa HogenboomMelissa Hogenboom is an award-winning science journalist, filmmaker, and editor at the BBC. She makes and commissions films and writes articles on a range of topics including psychology, neuroscience, and human evolution. Her journalism has been recognised by multiple awards, including the Webbys, the Drum Awards, Kavli AAAS Science Awards, the Telly Awards, and the British Association of Science Journalism Awards. She is a New America fellow, and she is the author of The Motherhood Complex. Key TakeawaysYour sense of self and identity as a parent often clashes with cultural expectations, especially for women as they become different types of mothers. Parenting roles can result in gender-based differences in daily responsibilities - so discussing shared roles with partners is a key component. Mothers are sold a narrative that mothers must be self-sacrificing, which has significant costs for the family's well-being. Mom guilt around the “idealized mother” is a real phenomenon because mothers care. Guilt can result in neglecting one's own needs and then contribute to parental burnout and poor maternal health. Young people when asked said the main thing they wanted in life was to make a lot of money. More than 80% listed this first. Is this the best indicator or sign post for a good and fulfilling life? How could we ever know? Harvard University has been tracking a group of students for more than 75 years, and the results of this huge study reveal that the number and strength of social connections throughout our life is the best indicator of our future physical health, mental functioning and sense of happiness. At the same time, suicide rates among men are skyrocketing in synch with rates of loneliness. Men over 45 reporting loneliness increased from 20% to 33% in ten years, while the suicide rate in this group went up 50% in the same period. Male suicide rates are 3.7 times higher than among females. Men struggle with self-expression- of their internal emotional state, and especially with the ability to tell significant people that they love them. And yet boys up to their early teens are just as open and expressive as their sisters. How are these things linked and what can be done about it? How can we help boys and men make progress in these critical areas? Join you hosts as they take on a topic that they feel it is essential to address: the ability to self-express and generate meaningful relationships as life moves forward. There are take away's here for all of us- not just men. But think especially about men in your life you love- from boys to grandfathers- as it applies to them even more. Our challenge to you is to initiate a conversation with someone new for the first time. Let us know how it went for you. Seriously I just want to know what's going on. If, like me, you remember everything that was asked of us from the beginning of last year, the inconsistencies with the science we were asked to follow, the lack of accountability placed on our government's chosen experts, the strategic suppression and/or defamation of experts accused of spreading misinformation that turned out to be correct, the rushed vx that was heralded as the heroic beginning of our return to normal, the temporary nature of the initial strategy that never ended, the multiple examples of leadership exposed not following their own unconstitutional decrees, the circumstantial fear mongering of our major media outlets, the biased support and targeted censorship from all of our major social media platforms, the coordinated support from all private institutions with documented relationships to our government, the mostly peaceful riots that couldn't possibly be “super spreaders”, the planned debacle at our boarder, our government deciding for us what was and wasn't essential - orchestrating the largest wealth transfer in my life time, and after all of this it turns out that the intention was never to respect the individual sovereignty of the American citizen. Like me, I'm sure you remember that the vx was made available at the discretion of the people, but as soon as liberty failed to yield the results projected by our government, they quickly abandoned liberty and moved to justify force. Understand that if freedom is so easily discarded then it was never valued in the first place. Neighbor against neighbor family against family and I'm sure, like me, you remember how many times Mr. Biden said “UNITY” at his inaugural address. I just want to know what's really going on, don't you? So TikTok is low-key the first big manifestation of AI taking over the world. Many of us (though now all, because Deondre' seems to have avoided the TikTok trap) have had those moments during the pandemic when we went down a TikTok wormhole and the next thing you know, it's 4 in the morning. We talk with our friend Andy Reinhold about why TikTok is so effective, and here is what he thinks: TikTok has nailed the discoverability problem that plagues a lot of new users on other types of platforms like Twitch or any platform where you need to actively seek out people to follow or subscribe to. As soon as you start creating, TikTok starts serving your content to other people automatically. This also also why it's so easy to be a consumer, as well as a creator: you don't have to spend time making decisions about what to watch and being paralyzed by the paradox of choice. TikTok has also been the proof of concept that people care about content more than quality. In fact, the shittier your TikTok greenscreen looks, the funnier it is, so people don't have to worry about their TikTok videos looking bad because that's kind of the point. And then we also delve into the political elements of the fact that the company that owns TikTok, ByteDance, is a Chinese company, and how the threats to shut down TikTok in the US only bolstered TikTok's popularity. China has been pushing AI and machine learning by dumping loads of venture capital into it, and sees the role of government as a support system for their biggest companies, as opposed to the US where we look to the government to rein in big tech and big tech to rein in government. All these factors and more lead to a winning formula where TikTok has quickly grown to 690 million users, 90% of whom use the app every day, making it the fastest growing app in the world. Is this really the case? In an article in The Province (June 12, 2014) entitled “The Guys Crisis: Boys are falling badly behind the girls at school,” author Paul Luke states, “By high school, girls’ grade point average outshines that of boys. In Canada, women make up almost 60 percent of university students.” He explains the phenomenon by suggesting that for too long the needs of girls were overlooked in school and now that things are more equitable, girls outshine boys in learning. Recently, however, Dr. Jim Dueck, author, former Assistant Deputy Minister of Education for the province of Alberta, and former head of Accountability and Student Assessment, performed a revealing analysis on current practices in student assessment. The results were not only remarkable but very disturbing, exposing what might well be an institutional suppression of the performance of male students. Dads, says Meg Meeker, are the real gamechangers for kids and the culture, because they are the KEY in developing a child’s healthy self esteem, in keeping kids in school and seeking higher education and in staying out of trouble. If Dads could see themselves from behind their kids’ eyes, she claims, their lives would never be the same. Better dads means healthier kids who grow into successful adults. And strong adults create a healthier culture. No, it’s not always about Mom. Dr. Meeker is a pediatrician, who has practiced pediatric and adolescent medicine for 25 years. She is the author of six books including the best-selling Strong Fathers/ Strong Daughters: Ten Secrets Every Father Should Know, Boys Should Be Boys, Your Kids At Risk, The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers: Reclaiming Our Passion, Purpose and Sanity, Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters: The 30 Day Challenge and Strong Mothers, Strong Sons: Lessons Mothers Need to Raise Extraordinary Men, Ballentine Books, April 2014. She is a popular speaker on pediatric health issues and child-parent relationships. Meg is Co-host and Physician-in-Residence of Dr. James Dobson's Family Talk radio program. She is also, Assistant Clinical Professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and currently teaches medical students and physicians in residency training. She has been married to her husband, Walter for 32 years. They have shared a medical practice for over 20 years. They have three grown daughters and a grown son. She lives in northern Michigan. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) https://youtu.be/B9WLgAfygJo What's Your Code of Honor?Tomorrow's World ViewpointDo we show honour towards each other or has society, in its failure to differentiate between right and wrong, also lost its adherence to a conventional standard of conduct? Do you live by The Honour Principle? When we hear stories about deceit, corruption, and infidelity filling the news headlines, it should make us wonder, “Where has all the honour gone?” We are witnessing a changing world where more and more people show less respect and honour and are too often indifferent or outright belligerent towards one another. In a book written by Robert Barriger, the author asks the question “Where Has All the Honor Gone?” He writes about “Experiencing the Power of the Honour Principle and How it Can Add Significance to Your Life.” This work explores and explains the critical need to restore and integrate this valuable truth of honour in all areas of life; work, family and leadership. While we are not in agreement with many of his religious beliefs, we do see that on the matter of maintaining honour he has a point.” Mr Barriger states: “To give and to receive honor is a basic human need,” and “There is a cry in the human heart for honor”. So yes, people seem to crave it but do they recognize that those they have relationships with also need it, and are they willing to give? Barriger continues, “Unfortunately our media intensive world too often celebrates superficiality with focus on people like Lady Gaga, or fantasy heroes like Spiderman. Honor is more than fame or power it is a spiritual principle and measure of character.”…“When we give honor to our spouses, families, churches and nation, we help to build our communities” Barriger concludes “The Honour Principle is not found on a list it is found in the heart and must be lived.” The word honour originates from the word esteem, meaning to respect and value. So do we respect and value those around us? Do we honour only those who are honourable? Are there daily situations where this time-proven principle should be practiced? The principle of honour needs to be applied regularly in the home, on the job, in government and even on our roads and highways. There used to be a time when it meant a great deal to people. Men would meet on the “field of honour” and be willing to give their lives and die that they might retain their honour. The “field of honour” was known as the place where duels were fought, where men would stand back to back, pistol in hand, walk 10-20 paces then turn around and fire!! I am certainly not condoning dueling as a means to defend your honour, but what it illustrates is that a person’s honour meant something. They would go to their grave to ensure their honour remained intact. Women also once took great care to live their lives in such a way that they would never “lose their honour.” Chastity was one of the codes of honour, a concept not widely practiced today. Unfortunately however, chastity has all too seldom been considered honourable on the part of men through the ages.” A well-known United States Military Academy prides itself on being an institution where this principle still has high value. Those enrolled at West Point are still guided by the motto “Duty, Honor, Country”. West Point stresses the development of cadets intellectually, physically, militarily, ethically, spiritually, and socially. They even have an honour code: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do”. Those are high ideals—the honour principle is widely promoted at that institution but no doubt there have been failures along the way. Sadly though, honour is not being held in the highest regard or valued as it once was. The daily news is often filled with examples of men and women, leaders in their respective fields, who have come up far too short. These individuals get caught up in their own weaknesses and as a result have failed those who once looked to them as respected leaders. In the end their behaviour affected their careers and focus—they did not lead their lives above reproach—they lost respect and honour and character. They did not make wise decisions. ---------- www.tomorrowsworld.org Viewpoint Archives - http://www.lcgCanada.org/viewpoint-ar... “Analysis of Children's Drawings to Gain Insight into Plant Blindness” with Dr. Christina Hargiss and Dr. Paula Comeau Plant blindness is a phenomenon that, despite its name, has nothing to do with whether or not plants can see. It is actually defined as our inability to see or value the plants around us. Interdisciplinary researchers Drs. Christina Hargiss and Paula Comeau have spent a lot of time digging down to the “roots” of this problem, with research touching anything from psychology to history, cryptography, literature, art and more. This episode, we discuss their work studying plant blindness and mental models in children’s art. We read every one and your language news could make it to a show intro in the future.Simply do one of the following:1) go on Skype and leave a voice message for fluentlanguage2) or email us at podcast@fluentlanguage.co.uk - include a voice memo from your phone if you can, so we can feature your voice on the showTopic: Language Learning Can Bring World Peace Language is a beautiful caress that can make strangers melt into friends, but la gusgen is also a verbal door that can be closed in the face of outsiders. (Eddie Butler) We went for deep stuff, and discussed the many ways that language learning can improve the world. From individual peace of mind, via tolerance in your everyday life, to changing the outlook of your country. We found it felt wrong not to talk about moving abroad. Considering what's happening in Britain this year, the discussion turned to migration. Do people miss out when something foreign is added to the community? Our discussion might surprise you, because as always all isn't quite what it seems. And yes, we did say the B-word: Brexit. And what about language education in schools? If we believe that language learning creates world peace, should we make everyone learn as many languages as possible? The Power of LanguageFinally, we only need to give you one word that shows something very interesting: migrant. Even when you're not learning a foreign language, the way that people and media around us use language to shape opinions affects everyone's life. We touch on the idea that language can send signals about all of us, and make or break peace. In our discussion, Lindsay and I got as close as you can get to saying horrible words. But not all the way there. We hope you have a listen to find out more, and get in touch to tell us where you stand on language and world peace.Links and Resources Lingo Newydd, Welsh Learning Magazine Lindsay on IWTYAL and Olly IWTYAL on the Creative Language Learning Podcast Everyone's A Little Bit Racist by Avenue Q Babel, the Language Magazine is talking about how "migrant" as a word has changed BBC Article
