067 Geoffrey Gunderson, Vaquero Skateboards Owner, Skater and Friend Geoff is a skater and small skate brand owner I've gotten to know and become friends with over the past few years. He is a So Cal born, Oregon Raised, eventually a Nor Cal transplant, so we talk about that and our perceptions of the preconceived attitudes that come with each amongst other things. We have had some great sessions together over the last decade and we talk about some of those times... Flower Shop in SF, Weirdo Bowl, etc.... We talk skate shops vs. chain stores and what small skate shops provided for skateboarders which is so rare today. In the old days "Kooks were Kooks, but who gets to decide who a Kook is, some other Kook" We even give props to some longboarder friends of ours, so damn we must be the kooks... hahaha We talked about one of our mutually favorite skateboarders Josh Rodriguez! We both feel Josh a craft beer who has never had a model which is unbelievable, and lots of guys that have models are Coors Lite... lol we had a fun conversation and hope you enjoy it... Geoffrey skates everything, and I like that. We talk about some of the issues in sponsoring skaters, our own perceptions and what stokes us out vs what's cool to do. Both of us are stubborn and do it our way. He has a great 14 year old Danny Way story amongst others.
Jason Borgstede is an OG snowboarder who did everything in snowboarding without having a pro model. While that's a bummer, Jason is an X-Games Gold Medalist, he filmed with Mack Dawg, and he rode for the biggest brands in the sport…he did so much over his career that this is a two-parter. Jason wears his heart on his sleeve and in part 1, we talk about poker, living all over, finding skate and snow, sponsorship letters, getting on the Burton Factory Team, and much more. Mark Sullivan and Mike Arzt ask the Inappropriate Questions Jason Borgstede Show Notes: 3:00: His marathon bet, Danny Way, and Poker 20:30: Rollerblade: They invented inline skating and make the best skates on the planet. Damon Way is a designer, brand marketer, and the co-founder of DC Shoes. With the help of his brother, pioneering skateboarder Danny Way, DC become one of the most sought after skate brands of the 90's. Under Way's guidance, DC was one of the first streetwear brands to succsessfluly implelment artist collaborations and limited edition releases into their product line. In 2004, DC was sold to Quiksilver and the brand slowly lost much of its luster without his creative control. In this episode, we sit down to discuss whether skateboarders or surfers have better style, why the music that we listen to no longer defines our identities, and why Toyota Prius headlights are so damn ugly.

Todays guest is Cheyne Magnusson. Cheyne was a Pro Surfer that grew up in Hawaii on the island of Maui and has had his hands in just about everything surf related. Cheyne was an early adopter of progressive surfing and was one of the pioneers to go above the lip and explore aerial surfing. Which makes lots of sense because his father is Famous 80's Pro Vert Skater Tony Magnusson. So for Cheyne it was in his DNA. Even Cheyenes entrepreneur spirit might come from his roots as well. His dad started H-STREET SKATEBOARDS, the very first Skater owned skate company. H-Street was a company that oversaw the transition from 'Vert" skating to "Street" skating. H-Street's first sponsored skaters were Matt Hensley and Danny Way, two of the most influential skaters of all time. So progression is in Cheyne's blood, and the bloodlines run deep. When Cheyne was young his folks split and he went to Hawaii to live with his mom. Cheyne grew up on the island of Maui. It is here were he fostered a love for Surf and Seafood. Cheyne would eventually fall in love with spearfishing and fall in love with cooking, thus creating a special "Poke" recipe that he would prepare for his friends and family, especially after a long day of playing in the surf and sun. Cheyne would eventually make his way back to Oceanside, where he would become one of the wizards involved in the ever-changing wave pool space. With a chance encounter with a fellow surfer and fish lover, Cheyne met Chris Slowey. Chris "Slowey" specialized in creating spaces for enjoyment in the Bar and Restaurant industry. These two quickly came up with the idea of "SHOOTZ"! Shootz started as little "pop-ups" in and around local breweries in San Diego County, serving up Cheyne's "Famous" Poke Recipe. A Recipe he has spend years crafting. a Recipe he holds dear to his heart, don't try to steal it, or you might get speared. Cheyne is a charismatic guy the spews positivity, and it's no wonder everyone wants to work with him. He's the kind of guy that injects salt water in the most corporate of boardrooms. He keeps salt int the building. And on every project he works on he adds that crusty approach that only a surfer could appreciate. The wave pool game would come calling and Cheyne answered the call and he had to put "SHOOTZ" poke on ice! After some ups and downs in the Wave pool game, Cheyne found himself back in Oceanside. Once again Cheyenne would hook up with Christopher Slowey and they RE-Booted "SHOOTZ" 2.0! Bigger and stronger! SHOOTZ was re-Born! While Cheyne was away, Chris had been hard at work planning Brewies and creating spaces and opportunities. "Slowey" had found the perfect space. An old building with a series of old auto repair garages. Enough to house 9 small buissneses with a common areas. Blocks from the beach in an area with lots of potential. The new building was re-imagined and re-branded as "The Tremont Collective". Appropriate since it's on the corner of Wisconsin and Tremont, just south of the pier. The Tremont Collective houses 9 small businesses where you can shop, eat, drink and connect. 9 local businesses! Brixton lifestyle apparel, Communal Coffee, The Annex, Stab Magazine, Atacama Surf Shop, Bottlecraft and shop, Verve Spin Studios, Al Fresko (lifestyle and catering) and last but not least!!!!! SHOOTZ FISH X BEER!!!!!!! At last Chris's and Cheynes vision came to life! With the help from "Rock and Roll" chef Davin Waite! The SHOOTZ menu is off the charts and its changing daily. Shootz also offers their very own Japanese Lager to perfectly accompany the sophisticated palate of tasty fish. SHOOTZ could be described as flavors from Maui and Baja colliding. Line caught poke, off-the boat tacos and daily fish market specials. The grand opening was a huge success and its been lines out the door ever since. I parked my VW bus right in front of the "Tremont Collective" all day for the grand opening celebrations. The gathering was epic and everyone was eating and drinking! yewonline.com shootzfishxbeer.com

Sal hails from Baton Rouge Louisiana where he started riding BMX until it went in a direction that no longer interested him, and with a little luck, found himself with a skateboard to ride, and has never looked back. Soon, he found himself touring with skateboarding greats like Danny Way and Ron Allen, filming all around the country, and living a dream. His early sponsors include H-Street, Plan B, Tracker Trucks, and Spitfire. Those dreams come to and end for most and for him, he just took what he had an moved forward on new projects of his own. He's been the man behind Aesthetics Clothing and Skateboards, Elwood, 23 Skateboards and more. He's lived in New York and helped run the Zoo York brand at it's peak, and much more. He's got some new projects coming up with his BMX roots, but personally will always be searching out a thrill on his skateboard. At 49 years old, I watched him still casually busting out backside airs in a pool just a few weeks ago. Through his various brands and relationships, he's sponsored many people who've gone on to make quite a splash in skateboarding, like Fucking Awesome's Jason Dill amongst others. Sal is deep in the skateboard culture and has a great respect for it.On the day we recorded (twice--oops), Sal found himself with myself and legendary skate photographer and music man "O" Otis Barthoulameu as O dyed some wheels for him and we were chatting while the Rit Dye boiled. Sorry for the background noise, this is just the reality of doing all this on the fly.If you are a fan of Sal, you will enjoy hearing his perspective. As always, I learn new things everyday from these conversations, and am happy to share them with my 3 listeners worldwide. Thank all 3 of you. Privacy Policy and California Privacy Notice.

Professional skateboarder, photographer, and frequently requested guest Arto Saari joins the show to talk about how he went from a small rural town in Finland, to leaving the country as a young teenager to go on tour with Danny Way and start an adventure that's continued ever since. Like many people from a certain generation, Arto had his young mind blown by films like Thrashin', Gleaming the Cube, and even Back to the Future's skate scenes, but it would be an old board left behind by his uncle that would end up changing his life forever. Although Seinajoki, Finland wasn't known for its abundance of skate-able terrain, Arto and his friends set about taking their skills to the next level by finding old warehouses that would make do as their own personal skate parks. Before long Arto began to attract global attention when he seemed to come out of no where at the world championships in Germany. That would lead to an invite to go on tour with Plan B, and the rest is history. Arto would end up living in southern California and form a life long relationship with Flip Skateboards and a successful career as a professional skateboarder becoming Thrasher's skater of year in 2001. During his career, he used his close proximity and friendships with many of the industries leading photographers and filmmakers to hone his own skills behind the camera and began to carve out a place for himself in a new profession that he was also passionate about. He continues to both skate and create beautiful photographs that attract both commercial clients and art buyers alike, and has since taken on the humbling task of learning to surf Hawaii's North Shore. During our conversation we talk about what made him leave Los Angeles and move to Hawaii, the intersection of skateboarding and photography, his love for Leica cameras, his photojournalist approach to skateboard photography, and the advice he gives to others coming up in the creative world. Who doesn't want to know how to be their best when it matters most? To be more creative, more contented, more consumed? To soar and not to sink? As the deeds of these athletes prove, if we can master flow, there are no limits to what we can accomplish. In this groundbreaking book, New York Times–bestselling author Steven Kotler decodes the mystery of ultimate human performance. Drawing on over a decade of research and first-hand reporting with dozens of top action and adventure sports athletes like big wave legend Laird Hamilton, big mountain snowboarder Jeremy Jones, and skateboarding pioneer Danny Way, Kotler explores the frontier science of “flow,” an optimal state of consciousness in which we perform and feel our best. Steven's work have been translated into over 40 languages and appeared in over 100 publications, including The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Wired and TIME. He also appears frequently on television and radio, and lectures widely on human performance, disruptive technology and radical innovation. He is also the cofounder of Creating Equilibrium, a conference/concert/innovation accelerator focused on solving critical environmental challenges, and, alongside his wife, author Joy Nicholson, Steven is the cofounder of Rancho de Chihuahua, a hospice care/special needs care dog sanctuary in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. "When I was reading this, I was relating back to moments when I played and getting into that (flow) state; I remember this sort of quiet calmness where I would have these conversations in my head and everything else was in slow motion." Devan McConnell, Head Sports Performance Coach at University of Massachusetts at Lowell is on to talk about The Rise of Superman. From the publisher: In this groundbreaking book, New York Times–bestselling author Steven Kotler decodes the mystery of ultimate human performance. Building a bridge between the extreme and the mainstream, The Rise of Superman explains how these athletes are using flow to do the impossible and how we can use this information to radically accelerate performance in our own lives. At its core, this is a book about profound possibility; about what is actually possible for our species; about where—if anywhere—our limits lie.

On paper, Joe Ciaglia's life sounds like a mob movie where the mobster, Joe, is bagging groceries at a store conveniently located across from the track. He meets a couple older gentlemen who introduce him to the inside world of the track. While learning the underbelly of the horse game, Joey starts winning city contracts for skate parks. It’s an interesting rag to riches story that includes professional skateboarders (Rob Dyrdek), race horses, accusations of collusion and no mob ties that I know of. Joe Ciaglia Show Notes 1:45: What does Joe do? 3:00: How the attitudes of perception around skateboarding have changed. 4:00: Does Joe skate 5:45: Grew in California and then he jumps ahead in the story and I reel him back to childhood, gymnastics and graduating at 16 9:17: Evo (listen for special offer) and Diecutstickers.com (Listen for 10% off your first order with DCS) Spy (25% off site wide, listen for code) and Sierra at Tahoe spots 10:33: What does he do after high school? Working at Ralphs and the Santa Anita racetrack 12:33: Getting into the horse game and Enumclaw Washington 13:37: Getting into the carpet cleaning hustle and then selling the company and how he gets into landscaping 15:00: Getting into skateboarding through putting in a bid in for a skatepark and then that business exploded for him 17:46: Was he skating at that point or did he start skateboarding once he started building parks 19:10: The companies that Joe has under his umbrella and developing the Mega for Danny Way and the Great Wall 20:43: Maloof Money cup and the building of a concrete park in 5 days. When Mike Blabac was called upon to be the photographer to document Danny Way jumping his skateboard over The Great Wall of China, there was no doubt in his mind that he had what it took to get the right shot. He had literally prepared most of his life for this type of pressure. From the ripe old age of 11 years old, Blabac was shooting with his first DSLR camera and developing his own photos in the darkroom. The only passion that was bigger, and more time consuming, was his love of skateboarding. At age 20, Blabac moved out to San Francisco to pursue skateboarding. Before long his two passions finally intersected, and he found himself shooting photos for some of the sponsored skateboarders he was hanging out with. The rest, as they say, is history. He would go on to become the head photographer for DC Shoe Company and have his fingerprints on some of the most iconic skate and action sports photos in the last 20 years. He has worked with some of the biggest names in actions sports, as well getting the opportunity to produce commercial work for a "whose who" roster of corporate clients. Through all of it, Blabac has kept a very humble attitude, and continues to have a deep love for photography and the access to interesting people and great adventures that it provides.
