My guest today believes that the single biggest problem with our health these days is not that we carry too much fat but that we don't carry enough muscle. She believes that if we start to focus and prioritise our largest organ – our muscle – we can burn more fat, improve our body composition, decrease our risk of disease and increase our energy levels. Dr Gabrielle Lyon has a doctorate in osteopathic medicine and is board-certified in family medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois and completed a research & clinical fellowship in Nutritional Science and Geriatrics at Washington University. She is the founder of the Institute for Muscle Centric-Medicine™ and the author of a brand new book, Forever Strong: A New, Science-backed Strategy for Aging Well. Dr Lyon first appeared on my podcast about 18 months ago. In that conversation, she made the compelling case that the quality of our lives is directly related to the health of our muscles. She explained how having more muscle can improve our metabolism, reverse insulin resistance, reduce our risk of disease, protect our skeleton and improve our mobility and balance. She also explained the critical role of resistance training and the importance of consuming adequate protein. In this conversation, we pick up where we left off. We cover: The crucial importance of muscle mass for all of usThe relationship between the health of our muscles and the health of our brainsThe role of mindset when it comes to implementing new health-promoting behavioursHow to make healthy habits stickHer exact exercise recommendations for both the time-pressed individual and the time-rich individualHow to reframe stress to make it work for usThe impact of sleep loss on our ability to build muscleWhy Dr Lyon is not such a huge fan of goals!! This is a truly empowering conversation, built on the idea that ageing well is a choice. It is jam-packed with practical, real-world insights. I hope you enjoy listening. By now, I think everyone knows how I feel about protein intake. It's one of the reasons I was super excited to have back on a past guest to talk about protein myths and her NEW book, which I found utterly fascinating. It dives into the actual science as to WHY people need protein in their diets- for wound healing, blood glucose regulation, and so much more. My guest today is Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. She is board certified in Family Medicine and completed a combined research and clinical fellowship in Geriatrics and Nutritional Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. She completed her undergraduate training in Nutritional Sciences: Vitamin & Mineral Metabolism at the University of Illinois. Dr. Lyon is a subject matter expert and educator in applying protein types and levels to health, performance, aging, and disease prevention. She has continued to receive mentorship from Dr. Donald Layman, Ph.D., over the course of two decades to help bring protein metabolism and nutrition from the bench to the bedside through her concept of Muscle-Centric Medicine®. Dr. Gabrielle has been seeing patients since 2006 and has helped thousands reach their full health potential. Her clinical practice services the leaders, innovators, mavericks, and executives in their prospective fields. Dr. Lyon works closely with the Special Operations Military serving on the SEAL Future Foundation's medical board and the Hunter Seven Foundation's leadership board, helping establish protocols for early detection, education, and treatments for cancer and toxic exposures. Have you ever counted calories or focused on certain macros and found protein to be the key for you? I'd love to hear about what you did and how in the comments below! In this episode: How Dr. Lyon came to understand muscle as she does today It's not about obesity; it's about being under-muscled What is sarcopenia and what's important about it NOW? How anyone can improve mitochondrial biogenesis The two big components of healthy skeletal muscle and healthy mitochondria Protein food fears and the science around them A mindset tip from working with Navy SEALs-- HUGE shift in thinking! Dr. Lyon's thoughts on GLP-1 agonists... you'll be surprised! Quotes "One of the reasons why I wrote this book and why this book is so important and why we have to be a unified front is that in the media, there's this push to go plant-based and there is this push that we need to decrease our dietary protein intake and nothing is further from the truth." [14:36] "We are at the precipice of a new frontier of medicine that is really going to define amino acids as individual nutrients, as well as muscle as this organ of longevity." Obviously real food sources, dense protein sources of real food are critical, but sometimes we're not getting in the adequate amount of protein that our bodies need to get the results that we want. And so a lot of folks look to protein supplements, and there are a ton of protein supplements available on the market today, from plant source to animal source. But the vast majority of clinical evidence supporting the benefits of using a protein supplement are from studies done on whey protein. A randomized double-blind study published in the Journal of Nutrition, found that overweight test subjects who are instructed to consume whey protein daily for 23 weeks, lost more body fat, had greater loss in waist circumference and had a greater reduction of circulating ghrelin levels. That is our major hunger hormone, compared to test subjects who were taking soy protein or an isogenic carbohydrate drink. What's really interesting about this study is that the test subjects were not instructed to make any other dietary or lifestyle changes, they just started losing more belly fat by adding in whey protein. That's really something remarkable to pay attention to, and by the way whey protein is not a new invention, Socrates the father of modern medicine utilized whey protein, it was called serum, in their particular dialect, of course, but effectively that's what the translation is. So this has been around for a very long time and it's the most science-backed form of protein, so whatever protein you subscribe to, just make sure you get the best quality possible. And you're gonna find the best quality possible whether it's grass-fed whey protein or a plant-based protein from Onnit, go to onnit.com/model, that's onnit.com/model. And you will find the highest quality protein supplements in the world. Onnit is a health and human performance focused company that even puts their supplements through clinical trials, through randomized controlled trials to see their efficacy. So they're going above and beyond, go to onnit.com/model, check out their grass-fed whey protein, it's amazing and of course, if you're subscribed to a plant-based protocol their plant-based protein is just the best, it just is. My oldest son actually he utilizes it, it's his favorite protein when he's doing a plant-based protocol, some people just their body jives better with certain things and we have to honor that. But we wanna have delicious experiences and we wanna have things that taste good and also feel good in our bodies. So Onnit is that deal check them out, go to onnit.com/model This episode is brought to you by LMNT. Neuroplasticity, the ability of the human brain to grow and adapt and evolve and really to unlock our superhuman capacity is driven by our experiences, our practices, our activities, but also our nutrition. Fascinating new research published in the journal Neuron found that magnesium, this key electrolyte is able to restore critical brain plasticity and improve overall cognitive function. Again, neuroplasticity is the ability of our brain to change and adapt. Now, this is one key electrolyte, but it works in tandem with other electrolytes like sodium. Sodium is critical for maintaining proper hydration of the human brain. If you didn't know this, the human brain is primarily made of water. We're talking somewhere in the ballpark of 75, upwards of 80% water. It's so important because just a small decrease in our body's optimal hydration level, what's noted in the data, just a 2% decrease in our baseline hydration level can lead to dramatic cognitive decline, helping to sustain and maintain proper hydration levels in the brain. Sodium is critical in that. And also researchers at McGill University found that sodium functions as a "off on switch" for specific neurotransmitters that support our cognitive function and protect our brains from numerous degenerative diseases. Right now, the number one electrolyte company in the world is delivering a gift for new and returning customers with each purchase of LMNT. That's LMNT, the number one electrolyte in the market. No binders, no fillers, no artificial ingredients, no crazy sugar and sweeteners. My friend's son was just over at our house and my son, my oldest son Jordan, was training them, taking his teammates through some workouts. And we opened the freezer and there's a bottle of Gatorade, that's a bottle of Gatorade in our freezer. And my wife's like, whose is this? 'Cause we know we don't roll like that. We don't mess with the gators. All right. We don't mess with the Gatorades. And we knew who it was, it was one of his friends. And he came in, he's like, well, at least this is the no sugar kind. And then I go through some of the ingredients with him and I find those curve balls of like, here's where they're sneaking in these artificial ingredients and things that the human body has no association with. But you know, he's taken a step in the right direction by, by being in our environment. So, you know what I did? I put the LMNT in his hand. Alright, make sure that he's got the good stuff, the very best stuff. And also this is backed by peer-reviewed data in a huge body of evidence. With a background that includes a combined research and clinical fellowship in geriatrics and nutritional sciences at Washington University and undergraduate training in nutritional sciences at the University of Illinois, she is a subject-matter expert and educator in the practical application of protein types and levels for health, performance, aging, and disease prevention. Dr. Lyon's upcoming book, Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well, outlines her whole-body, whole- person protocol for muscle health optimization. Through her private practice, popular YouTube channel, influential podcast and new book, she asks a fundamental question: How can we build strength, not just in the weight room, but in our daily lives? Dr. Lyon is on a mission to make the world a little bit stronger by building consistent dietary and lifestyle habits, and showing up for ourselves and the people we love. In this episode, Brad and Gabrielle discuss the food industry and how humans can use food as medicine to age in a healthy way. This special episode is a solocast for me to personally introduce to you my new book, Forever Strong: A New Science Based Strategy for Aging. I'm so excited to share it with you. It took two years and 20 years of experience to bring you the information in these pages. You cannot correct a problem if the foundation and framework for thinking of that problem is wrong. That is where muscle centric medicine was born, from a desire and need to move the needle for you to be able to take charge of your own health and wellness. In my book, I give you exactly what to do, exactly how you need to think about things, and what you need to execute. This concept of obesity pained me to the point that everything in this book, and what I talk about, is to change the trajectory of your life. To allow us all as a society to not be left floundering by flawed nutrition and exercise recommendations. In this episode I discuss:Training plans for everyone from beginners to experts. How to address your personal weaknesses and triggers. What is Muscle Centric Medicine and why is it so important? The ideal protein and carbohydrate balance. This episode is brought to you by LMNT, PaleoValley, InsideTracker, 1stPhormOrder Dr. Lyon's Book Forever Strong - https://drgabriellelyon.com/forever-strong/Mentioned in this episode:15% Off Your Purchasehttps://paleovalley.com/drlyonGet your free LMNT Sample Pack with any purchasehttps://drinklmnt.com/drlyonInside Tracker 20% Off the Entire Storehttps://info.insidetracker.com/drlyonVisit 1st Phorm Website for Free Shipping on orders $75+http://www.1stphorm.com/drlyon

I wrap up our series on Strong Body Strong Mind and I'm going to give you a paradigm shifting analogy that I believe will forever change how you view your brain's ability in regards to the overall health of your body. I kicked off the series with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon whose focus is Muscle Centric Medicine. Her new book is called Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well. The focus was on how muscle, built by protein and resistance training, is key for our brain health and long term cognitive ability. This concept is a cultural shift. Then I brought on Randy James, my close friend, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert, to talk about his experience with patients and his own growing understanding of the importance of skeletal muscle as it relates to overall health. Here now, I give you some highlights from the conversations, and again, an analogy I believe will greatly alter how you view and care for the future health of your brain. We continue our series on Strong Body Strong Mind and How To Remain Fully Capable As You Age. My catalyst for this series is Dr Gabrielle Lyon whose expertise is Muscle-Centric Medicine, and that is our muse, how in our search for long term health often misses the vital role of skeletal muscle. Gabrielle's new book is Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well and her podcast is The Dr Gabrielle Lyon Show. Here, I'm with my great friend, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert. He works directly, hand in hand with patients every day who are seeking to live long and live well. You can find him at truelifemedicine.com. He listened to my conversation with Gabrielle and I've brought him on to get his take on these topics of muscle, protein, and aging well. We actually bring back the question he always gets asked, “Dr James, what exercise is best?” And his answer has always been, “Whatever one you'll do!” Which is true if you're coming from a sedentary place. But based on Dr Lyon's research we're now saying, you'll serve your health best to give resistance training precedent over cardio. Both are best, but this is a strong case for resistance training taking a lead in the discussion. We are talking about aging well. Specifically, maintaining our mental and physical strength and capacity, as long as possible. The media talks about lifespan, but what I care about is health span. I want to be healthy and able to the end, whether my end is 60 years old or 100. As opposed to lingering for the last 5 or 20 years as is getting to be the norm. A tragic norm. My expert on the topic is Dr Gabrielle Lyon. I've known of Dr Lyons for a long, long time through Functional Medicine circles. Her focus and expertise is Muscle-Centric Medicine, and today we are talking about just that…muscle, and how we are missing this necessity in our culture that is obsessed with so many of the wrong things for aging well. Dr. Lyon is board certified in family medicine and is a subject-matter expert and educator in the practical application of protein types and levels for health, performance, aging, and disease prevention. And we're going to get into this topic of protein, in relation to muscle. Her new book is, Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well, which I've been studying and is the catalyst for our conversation here.
