Read to Lead: Why the Best Leaders Have Their Noses in Books Are you struggling to level up your leadership game? In this eye-opening episode, we dive into the secret weapon of legendary leaders like Warren Buffett, Abraham Lincoln, and Oprah Winfrey – they're all bookworms! Our panel of coaching experts breaks down why consistent reading isn't just helpful for leaders – it's absolutely essential. Mind-Expanding Mentorship From Warren Buffett devouring 500 pages daily to the average CEO consuming 4-5 books monthly, successful leaders are consistently feeding their brains. As one of our experts points out, reading gives you access to wisdom from people you'll never meet in person - it's like having Jocko Willink or Simon Sinek as your personal mentor! No Excuses, Only Priorities Think you're too busy to read? Our coaches challenge that notion head-on. As our coaching panel reminds us, "24 hours in every day is the only thing the good Lord gave us all an equal measure of." It's not about finding time; it's about making reading a priority. Cut just one hour of screen time weekly, and you've created space for literary growth. Brain-Rewiring Benefits Reading doesn't just provide information – it physically rewires your brain. According to our experts, physically reading and taking notes creates neural pathways that strengthen memory and enhance learning. For maximum benefit, follow up with quality sleep to cement those connections! ## The Bottom Line Leaders who stop reading stop growing. If you think you've "arrived," you haven't. If you're "too busy," you're not prioritizing correctly. Make a personal development plan that includes consistent reading, and watch your leadership capabilities soar. Tune in for: • Warren Buffett's surprising success secret (hint: it involves 500 pages daily) • Why reading trumps experience alone • Practical tips for creating your own leadership reading plan • The scientific reason reading physical books beats audiobooks Stop making excuses and start turning pages – your team is counting on you!
Kristen and Mike dive into Dale Carnegie's classic "How to Win Friends and Influence People" - a book that's approaching its 90th anniversary yet remains powerfully relevant. Mike reveals he's read (or rather, listened to) the book nearly 10 times, often before starting new jobs to ground himself in core leadership principles. The couple explores why this 1936 bestseller has sold over 30 million copies and continues to influence modern leadership thinking. Unlike most leadership books, Carnegie's approach focuses on genuine human connection rather than strategy or tactics. As you listen, you'll discover timeless principles that can transform not just your leadership approach, but all your relationships through small yet powerful changes in how you interact with others.Highlights:Carnegie's core message: Leadership is about making people want to do things, not forcing themPrinciple 1: Don't criticize, condemn, or complain - criticism puts people on defensivePrinciple 2: Give honest and sincere appreciation - not flatteryPrinciple 3: Arouse in the other person an eager want - talk about what they wantThe book emphasizes remembering names as "the sweetest sound" to any personGood listening is highlighted as more important than talking for effective communication"The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it" - a principle both hosts struggle withMike shares examples of seeing these principles successfully applied in hospitality leadershipCarnegie's focus on understanding others' perspectives aligns with the improv principles Kristen teachesLinks & Resources Mentioned:How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale CarnegieHow to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin It's Your Ship by Michael Abrashoff The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier How to Say It for Women by Phyllis Mindell Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara Podcast Website: www.loveandleadershippod.comInstagram: @loveleaderpodFollow us on LinkedIn!Kristen: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristenbsharkey/ Mike: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-s-364970111/Learn more about Kristen's leadership coaching and facilitation services: http://www.emboldify.com

How do you turn an idea into lasting thought leadership? Dr. Ruth Gotian has done just that—translating academic research on high achievers into actionable insights that help individuals and organizations thrive. In this episode, we explore the power of mentorship, the resilience of high achievers, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Ruth shares stories of Olympic champions, astronauts, and Nobel laureates who refused to settle for mediocrity. Like Dr. Peggy Whitson, who applied to NASA for a decade before becoming the agency's chief astronaut. Or the Olympian already planning his next win on the flight home. Ruth knows success isn't a talent—it's a learned skill. She shares how to identify your superpowers, leverage them, and plant ambition like a seed that grows into unstoppable drive. She also reveals her own journey of thought leadership—from struggling with the first chapter of The Success Factor to writing books, speaking globally, and democratizing knowledge in every format possible. Her latest book, The Financial Times Guide to Mentoring: A Complete Guide to Effective Mentoring (The FT Guides), co-authored with Andy Lopata, was named Runner-Up for Leadership Book of the Year (The Leadership Awards 2024). Whether you're looking to elevate your own success or help others rise, Ruth's insights will change the way you think about achievement. Three Key Takeaways: • Success is a Learned Skill, Not Just Talent – High achievers aren't born extraordinary; they develop habits, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of growth. Whether it's Olympians, astronauts, or Nobel laureates, they all follow a process to success that anyone can adopt. • Mentorship is a Game-Changer – The right mentors can push you further than you ever imagined. Surround yourself with people who believe in you more than you believe in yourself, ask the tough questions, and challenge you to think bigger. (The Financial Times Guide to Mentoring explores this in depth.) • Persistence Separates the Good from the Great – Dr. Peggy Whitson applied to be an astronaut for 10 years before finally being accepted—then went on to become NASA's Chief Astronaut. The difference between those who succeed and those who don't? They refuse to give up. Want to know if you are a High Achiever? Take this 2 minute assessment to find out.

In today's conversation Judith Germain speaks to Neil Jurd OBE who contrasts overly complicated leadership frameworks and emphasises the importance of simplicity. Judith notes the value of leaders being able to create space for their teams to contribute. Key Takeaways Neil emphasises simplifying leadership into two key concepts: connection (building relationships) and direction (clear, compelling purpose) Both agree leaders must genuinely care about followers and enable everyone to contribute, not just dominate Over-controlling and micromanaging are common leadership mistakes; allowing space for others to think/decide is crucial In this conversation, they discuss common leadership mistakes, with Neil highlighting the tendency for leaders to get overly involved and micromanage, rather than empowering their teams. The antidote is for leaders to step back, allow others to think and decide, and focus on inspiring and aligning the team around the shared purpose. What makes some organizations inspire fierce loyalty while others just seem to exist? In this episode, Kristen and Mike dive into Simon Sinek's groundbreaking book "Start With Why," exploring how truly great leaders and companies create lasting success by focusing on their purpose rather than just their products. Through compelling examples from Apple to Martin Luther King Jr., they break down why people don't buy what you do - they buy why you do it. Whether you're building a business, leading a team, or trying to make a bigger impact, this episode reveals how starting with your "why" can transform your approach to leadership and create genuine, lasting connections with both customers and employees.Highlights:The Golden Circle concept: Understanding the critical difference between what you do, how you do it, and why you do itWhy manipulation tactics like price cuts and promotions might work short-term but won't build lasting loyaltyThe fascinating neuroscience behind decision-making and how the limbic brain influences our choicesThe Law of Diffusion of Innovation and why you need to reach 15-18% market penetration before achieving mass successHow great organizations maintain consistency between their why, how, and what across all aspects of their businessThe importance of finding and developing leaders who share your organization's core whyThe "Celery Test" - a practical framework for making decisions that align with your organization's purposeWhy success can actually be the biggest challenge for maintaining your organizational whyThe difference between achievement (getting what you want) and success (knowing why you want it)The power of finding and articulating your personal why as a leaderLinks & Resources Mentioned:Start with Why by Simon Sinek Simon Sinek's 2009 TED Talk: "How Great Leaders Inspire Action"Leaders Eat Last by Simon SinekInfluence by Robert CialdiniKitchen Confidential by Anthony BourdainNever Split the Difference by Chris Voss Get your FREE 5 Day Leadership Reset Challenge guide here: https://llpod.link/challengePodcast Website: www.loveandleadershippod.comInstagram: @loveleaderpodFollow us on LinkedIn!Kristen: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristenbsharkey/ Mike: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-s-364970111/Learn more about Kristen's leadership coaching and facilitation services: http://www.emboldify.com
"52 Ways to Be a Servant Leader and Build Trust"
When 36-year-old Mike Abrashoff took command of the USS Benfold in 1997, he faced a demoralized crew that openly jeered their departing captain. Instead of sticking with the Navy's traditional command-and-control leadership style, Abrashoff decided to revolutionize how he led. His radical approach? Trust his crew, listen to their ideas, and make their lives better. The results were unprecedented - taking a ship with low morale and poor performance and transforming it into what many considered the best damn ship in the Navy. In this episode, Mike and Kristen break down Abrashoff's leadership philosophy and how his innovative approaches from 25 years ago remain remarkably relevant today.Highlights:What drives people to leave organizations: lack of dignity, inability to make an impact, not being listened to, and lack of responsibilityThe "Washington Post test" for decision-making: would you be comfortable seeing your actions on the front page?Three key questions for leaders when things go wrong: Were goals clear? Were there enough resources? Was training sufficient?Breaking down hierarchy by modeling the behavior you want to see from othersCreating a climate of trust through collaboration over competitionBuilding people up through praise, opportunity, and improved quality of lifeTaking calculated risks that empower your team to show initiativeHow focusing on people development led to exceptional combat readinessLinks & Resources Mentioned:It's Your Ship by Captain D. Have you ever considered that your best intentions as a leader can lead to self-deception and undermine your effectiveness? Kevin speaks with Victoria Trammell about how self-deception ties to our identity as leaders. Self-deception leads to what an inward mindset—an excessive and unhealthy self-focus that leads us to see ourselves and others in altered ways. She explains how leaders can act in ways that contradict their stated values, denying their team members growth and opportunity. Victoria believes, as leaders, we need to stay curious and see our team as individuals with different needs and goals. Kristen and Mike break down Marshall Goldsmith's influential book "What Got You Here Won't Get You There." While they praise the practical advice and behavioral frameworks in the book, they also challenge some of its core assumptions and discuss how leadership development has evolved since its 2007 publication. Through their analysis, they reveal how seemingly small behavioral habits can make or break a leader's effectiveness - and why changing these habits requires more than just willpower. The episode offers both practical tips for behavior change and a thoughtful critique of traditional executive coaching approaches, making it valuable for anyone looking to grow as a leader.Highlights:The 20 workplace habits that can derail successful leaders and why "winning too much" tends to be the most common and destructive behaviorHow successful leaders typically exhibit 6-8 of these habits, and why identifying your one or two biggest problem areas is crucial for developmentThe surprising reason why stopping negative behaviors can be more effective than trying to develop new positive onesA detailed breakdown of Goldsmith's seven-step change process, including how to gather feedback, apologize effectively, and follow through consistentlyWhy traditional approaches to leadership development might oversimplify complex psychological factors like imposter syndrome and internal motivationThe concept of "feedforward" and how this future-focused alternative to traditional feedback can create more openness to changeHow the simple act of saying "thank you" can transform the way you receive feedback and criticismAn analysis of whether the book's somewhat rigid approach and lack of nuance still serves modern leaders effectivelyLinks & Resources Mentioned:What Got You Here Won't Get You There by Marshall GoldsmithExtreme Ownership by Jocko WillinkHow to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale CarnegieDare to Lead by Brené BrownIt's Your Ship by Michael AbrashoffGood to Great by Jim CollinsThe First 90 Days by Michael D. Jim Vaselopulos and Jan Rutherford discuss what makes a great leadership book including the value of storytelling in making concepts relatable for the audience. They also discuss the importance of evidence-based concepts, and the significance of lasting and practical advice that transcends time. The best leadership books aren't necessarily leadership books. “The books that help you most are those which make you think the most. The hardest way of learning is that of easy reading. But a great book that comes from a great thinker is a ship of thought, deep braided with truth and beauty. ” — Pablo Neruda Key Takeaways [02:06] Jim and Jan discuss what makes a great leadership book, preferring evidence-based works over parables. Jim values data-driven insights, while Jan appreciates storytelling for its lasting impact, noting that different styles resonate with different readers. And if it does, to some degree, mission accomplished." “The best leadership books aren't necessarily leadership books." "If you're talking about leadership, you better be facing your own hypocrisy because nobody's got it all figured out ever." “Those leaders constantly test themselves and reframe their life story.” "Different things speak to different people." “A new way to communicate an idea is always interesting in a leadership book but it also needs to last." “The books that help you most are those which make you think the most. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about balancing work with career management. Many women tend to struggle with prioritizing their own career growth because they're too focused on the needs of the business. This week, I talk with Marja Wagenaar, a leadership specialist, former member of parliament in the Netherlands and author of “The Leadership Book for Women”. Here we discuss the ways in which we hold ourselves back by doing silent work without recognition, hesitating to raise our hands for new opportunities and focusing too heavily on being a “good girl”. We also explore her 50/50 method, which is designed to break these habits so that you can more confidently and effectively advance your career.About My GuestMarja Wagenaar PhD is a leadership expert. ABOUT THE BOOK: The Energy Advantage (Link to purchase) How do you maximize your success and impact as a leader while maintaining your stamina and sanity? The answer doesn't lie in simple “efficiency.” It's not about making better use of your time and resources. It's about understanding how energy works and how to tap into its power. Many people live lives of intense and false emotional compartmentalization. For example, they strive to be one person in the corner office (invincible warrior) and another at the dinner table (sensitive spouse), and they struggle to keep those two lives from bleeding into and contradicting each other. But as it turns out, this takes tremendous energy and is almost always impossible. One person can't be two different people. So, how do you live an integrated life of fulfillment, purpose, and success? How do you create an alignment between your head, heart, and creative power that is in coherence with your true self? The answer is simple and complex: You must move from managing your time to mastering your energy. For more than a decade and a half, Ricardo Sunderland has worked with the leaders of some of the world's largest and most recognizable companies. He has learned firsthand that mental and physical energy are no longer all that is needed for success for today's leaders—at all levels in their organizations. Today's leaders must bring emotional and spiritual energy to their roles and create a space in which they and their team members feel safe to challenge each other, grow together, and thrive. Given this significant leadership challenge, leaders must gain an energy advantage. You will learn: What gives you energy? How to identify the energy blockers that are holding you back. Every situation presents a choice for you to unlock the transformational energy source within you. The path to gaining the energy advantage on seven distinct levels. Quick recap Summary Ricardo's European Roadshow and Leadership Observations Michael and Ricardo talked about Ricardo's recent European roadshow, during which he met with 250 leaders in seven cities. Ricardo shared his observations about the current state of leadership, noting that leaders are increasingly focused on implementing abstract concepts in their workplaces. Michael introduced Ricardo as a partner at Egan Zender, a leadership advisory firm, and a coach to senior leaders of major global organizations. The discussion was set to continue for 15 to 25 minutes, with the potential for Ricardo to share links and other resources. Managing Energy for Optimal Productivity Ricardo and Michael discussed the importance of managing one's energy levels throughout the day for optimal productivity and well-being. Ricardo shared his insights on this topic, emphasizing understanding what activities give one energy. Michael agreed, sharing his experiences with energy management and highlighting the significance of this approach in addressing current organizational challenges. Both agreed on following one's energy levels for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Emotional Awareness for Productivity and Resiliency Ricardo discussed the importance of being aware of one's emotional state for optimal productivity and resiliency. He emphasized that understanding whether a day would be an 'energy giving' or 'energy taking' allows for intentional scheduling and increased clarity of mind. Ricardo also shared his recent experience launching a book and traveling to six European cities to meet with 250 leaders. He reported that the response was positive and curious about integrating the concepts. Integrating Personal and Professional Life for Success Ricardo and Michael discussed the importance of integrating personal and professional aspects of life to achieve fulfillment and success in the corporate world. They emphasized the need for individuals and organizations to understand their 'why' and focus on their unique strengths and energy levels. Michael shared his insights on creating an environment that allows individuals to be authentic and the benefits of understanding and managing one's energy levels. They also touched on the value of transparency and empathy in the workplace. Towards the end, they discussed the time-consuming nature of writing a book and the personal significance behind Ricardo's upcoming publication. Ricardo's Book Writing Journey and Purpose Ricardo shared his experience writing a book described as a labor of love. He emphasized the importance of connecting with one's purpose, following one's energy, and being intentional about one's desires. He also highlighted the need to accept the consequences of these desires. Michael agreed with Ricardo's insights and acknowledged the role of Harper Collins in the book's success. Leadership Book and Energy Management Michael and Ricardo discussed the impact of a leadership book and its unique approach to energy management in organizations. Michael highlighted the book's potential to create a positive ripple effect in society and businesses and its relevance for leaders managing constantly changing organizations. They also discussed the importance of creating a productive and engaging work environment where employees can operate in their sweet spot. Michael expressed optimism about the future, given leaders' open-mindedness and desire for improvement. Unexpected Reactions to Ricardo's Book Michael and Ricardo discussed the unexpected reactions to Ricardo's book, which focused on the concept of human energy and its leadership role. Ricardo shared that the book received positive feedback from large companies and was found practical and actionable. He emphasized the importance of incorporating spiritual energy into leadership to create a culture of vulnerability and strength. Michael agreed with Ricardo's views, highlighting the universal energy that connects all and the need to communicate with it for enlightenment. Ricardo's Book, Charity, and Remote Work Michael and Ricardo discussed Ricardo's new book, a game changer with all its proceeds donated to charity. Ricardo shared that he is promoting the book not for sales but to create a movement in partnership with his firm. Michael appreciated Ricardo's time and promised to share the show notes with his editor. They also discussed the impact of the pandemic on work and the adjustment to remote work settings.
