Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Alternative Proteins + Machine Learning: Project Proposals, Seeking Funding, published by Noa Weiss on December 6, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: I'm an AI & Machine Learning consultant (12 years of experience with data). My website: www.weissnoa.com. TL;DR: research, machine learning, data science strategy, I worked with early stage startups as well as big companies like PayPal. Vegan for 10 years and counting I want to move to work full time on animal welfare projects if I can find such projects where my skill set has added value. I looked for promising problems that I think I might solve, I'll list my top ones here (please give me feedback) I'm looking for funding to flesh these ideas out, implement them, and offer them to alternative protein companies Ideas 1: Modeling of the extrusion process What is this? A physical machine where you put ingredients in, and plant-based meat comes out. It's widely used The vast majority of plant-based meat solutions use this. It is also sometimes used for cultivated (lab-grown) meat. It's currently “voodoo” Trial and error, mostly unpredictable. It's a classic problem for ML Train a model to guess the result based on given ingredients. In problems like this, the model often isn't perfect but does help narrow down the search space significantly (for example, by recognizing that most sets of ingredients “obviously” won't work) 2: Addressing bottlenecks in Alternative Protein companies using existing research TL;DR: There are known bottle necks that are relevant for most alternative protein companies. For example: figuring out what stem cells are about to grow into as early as possible. There are existing solutions (in the form of published research) for these problems. For example, see this Nature article. These solutions are not ready for use (there's a difference between an article and a production ready system). I hope I can help orgs integrate these solutions. After I do this for one org, scaling to other orgs will be much easier. Some bottlenecks I might address All bottlenecks here are known problems for alternative protein companies, according to the experts I spoke to, but please tell me if I'm wrong. For all problems here, there is at least one scientific paper that seems promising enough to explore (in my opinion). Identification of the beginning stages of neural stem cells differentiation into specific cell types Predicting cell response to different treatments Identify new potential cell cycle regulatory genes If you're an org that could use a solution for one or more of these problems, please get in touch! Call to action Help me get funded to run this project Give me feedback on how to write a funding request for this project Contact me By messaging me here, or emailing [me at weissnoa dot com]. There’s nothing new about conspiracy theories, disinformation, and untruths in politics. What is new is how quickly malicious actors can spread disinformation when the world is tightly connected across social networks and internet news sites. We can give up on the problem and rely on the platforms themselves to fact-check stories or posts and screen out disinformation—or we can build new tools to help people identify disinformation as soon as it crosses their screens. Preslav Nakov is a computer scientist at the Qatar Computing Research Institute in Doha specializing in speech and language processing. He leads a project using machine learning to assess the reliability of media sources. That allows his team to gather news articles alongside signals about their trustworthiness and political biases, all in a Google News-like format. “You cannot possibly fact-check every single claim in the world,” Nakov explains. Instead, focus on the source. “I like to say that you can fact-check the fake news before it was even written.” His team’s tool, called the Tanbih News Aggregator, is available in Arabic and English and gathers articles in areas such as business, politics, sports, science and technology, and covid-19. Business Lab is hosted by Laurel Ruma, editorial director of Insights, the custom publishing division of MIT Technology Review. Often we ignore our own needs and it is important to build ourselves up so that we can be strong and stable.“You can know so much about nutrition and still not do it.”In addition, we talk about stress levels and how drastically they can affect both our mental health as well as our infertility. We hope this episode encourages you no matter where you are at in your fertility journey!Topics Discussed:
Originally recorded on November 20, 2020 Jenny Perlman Robinson and Molly Curtiss joined us at CID's virtual Speaker Series event and sat down with us after for further discussion on their work with The Brookings Institute. Despite growing evidence on what works to improve access and quality in education, the world continues to face a global learning crisis, with 258 million children already out of school and 617 million children and adolescents in school but not learning the basics even before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down schools around the globe. While there are many initiatives working to address this challenge at a small-scale, they often do not translate into the large-scale, systemic change required. Since 2014, the Millions Learning project, led by the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at the Brookings Institution, has examined how and under what conditions education policies and programs have gone to scale in developing contexts. Drawing upon literature and case studies from around the world, the 2016 report, Millions Learning: Scaling up quality education in developing countries, identified 14 core ingredients that, in different combinations depending on the context, contribute to scaling effective practices and approaches that improve learning. Now in the second phase of the project, CUE is implementing Real-time Scaling Labs, an action research project undertaken in partnership with local institutions and governments in several countries to support, learn from, and document the scaling process in real-time. The ultimate goal of these labs is to support initiatives as they deepen and expand while simultaneously gaining deeper insight into how policymakers, civil society, and the private sector can most effectively work together to bring about large-scale transformation in the quality of children’s learning and their development. This presentation will share key insights and lessons learned from the Millions Learning project to date, including the key drivers of scaling impact in education and common scaling barriers, alongside illustrative examples from the Real-time Scaling Labs currently underway. Jenny Perlman Robinson is senior fellow at the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at the Brookings Institution where she leads CUE’s efforts to build the evidence and produce practical guidance for scaling effective education initiatives through the Millions Learning project. Molly Curtiss is a senior research analyst at the Brookings Institution Center for Universal Education (CUE), where she has worked on the Millions Learning project since 2017.

Danielle & Nicole are here to discuss their favorite topic - virtual summits! Whether you're curious about the behind the scenes end of creating a the #totalteachersummit or you're seriously considering implementing a virtual summit in your classroom this school year, Danielle & Nicole are here to walk you through the "How-To" of virtual summit creation. When you listen to episode 46 you know why a virtual classroom meet-up is worthwhile, and today we're building on that point, bringing you the how. In just 9 easy steps, we break down questions to ask yourself, factors to consider, and potential roadblocks to look out for. Step 1: Pick a unit that makes sense to host as a virtual summit What unit is so large in scope that you always feel like you just scratch the surface with how you traditionally cover it? (Nothing comes to mind? In episode #18, we talked about how to teach topics you can't stand— this very well might be one of them) Step 2: Select what students will be responsible for in terms of creating the virtual summit. Think outside just the presentation itself. Student autonomy is key! Name of Summit. You have the general topic/concept, but let students choose a name for more ownership and creativity. How can you make this happen— have students work in small groups to come up with their name and a pitch for why. Step 3: Craft a corresponding rubric or rubrics to use for each of the requirements students must meet Identify Common Core Standards you are looking to address What you'll probably want included for this rubric or to have separate rubrics for: Presentation— creativity, accuracy, understanding audience Networking/Engagement—how do they interact with others “in chat.” The quality and quantity of what is said, how it is said The “extras”— do students need to create a corresponding PowerPoint for their talk? Do they need to create a virtual or physical thumbnail display of their talk Step 4: Decide what technology you need to use to make this happen. When will students be viewing the presentations? How will they give their feedback? Step 5: Determine how to model the concept and any related technology in your classroom Don't assume students know how to use a particular piece of technology. Time will probably need to be built in for students to learn this. Do students need to edit their videos? Upload them? These small logistics are things that can cause a lot of problems come the due date if you don't plan for it as students are unlikely to know what they don't know Step 6: Get students HYPED Step 7: Decide what students will need extra support with to create their virtual summit and select how much class time to devote to it Step 8: How can the summit live on/be shared with others? Grab our bulletin board print outs and utilize QR codes Use Class Dojo to share with parents Step 9: Reflection to help you iterate Build-in time for you and your students to reflect on the project, stay organized, student growth and ownership, make it even smoother next time or for next year

Machine Learning’s inroads into our collective consciousness have captured our imaginations. If you are interested in learning machine learning skills to enter this field, your moment is now. Majorly there are 4 properties or characteristics or measurements scales decide the whole depth and breadth of a machine learning project. The key distinction has to do with the end goal. As a Data Analyst, you’re analyzing data in order to tell a story and to produce actionable insights for members of your team. The analysis is performed and presented by human beings to other human beings who may then go on to make business decisions based on what’s been presented. The “audience” for your output is human. As a Machine Learning engineer on the other hand, your final “output” is working software (not the analyses or visualizations that you may have to create along the way), and your “audience” for this output often consists of other software components that run autonomously with minimal human supervision. The world is unquestionably changing in rapid and dramatic ways, and the demand for Machine Learning engineers is going to keep increasing exponentially. If this is YOUR future, then there’s no time like the present to start mastering the skills and developing the mindset you’re going to need to succeed. We from BEPEC are ready to help you and make you shift your career at any cost.Anyone are interested for Career Transition Programs on ML / AI / DL / Data Scienceget register here https://www.bepec.in/registration-formFor more details visit: https://www.bepec.in/Check our youtube channel for more videos and please subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn1U...Check our Instagram page: https://instagram.com/bepec_solutions/Check our Facebook Page : https://www.facebook.com/Bepecsolutions/

We know that Adverse Childhood Experiences or ACEs can lead to long-term health issues as adults, but we’re just beginning to understand the impact trauma has on a child’s ability to learn during the critical early years in school. The good news is researchers have identified strategies that help these students learn and they are beginning to be implemented in public schools across North Carolina. Today we’re going to talk with two leaders of the NC Resilience & Learning Project and hear from principals from Eastern North Carolina who are rolling out these game-changing efforts in their schools. Guests: • Elizabeth DeKonty, Director, NC Resilience & Learning Project • Dr. Katie Rosanbalm, Senior Research Scientist, Duke Center for Child and Family Policy • Jessica Parker, Assistant Principal, Phillips Middle School, Edgecombe County Public Schools • Roderick Tillery, Principal, Baskerville Elementary School, Nash Rocky Mount Public Schools

Today, the Getting Smart team dives into a conversation about industry-defined student competencies at Del Lago Academy in Escondido, just north of San Diego — with Alec Barron and Brett Goldsmith. Alec Barron is a Science Coach in the Escondido Union High School District and has taught a variety of science subjects for grades 6-12. He is one of the founding teachers of Del Lago since it first opened in 2013 and was part of the team that helped set up the school. At Del Lago, he developed a program called Competency X that provides the opportunity for students to develop a digital science portfolio to track and reflect evidence of their competency with science and engineering practices. The students earn badges that are validated by industry experts — like Brett Goldsmith, from Nanomedical Diagnostics — who joins Alec on this podcast. Brett Goldsmith is the co-founder and CTO of Nanomedical Diagnostics — a nanotech company building biosensors that speed up medical research and diagnostics; The first such tool in the world. He's also one of Del Lago's business partners that help define what STEM graduates should know and be able to do. Join Tom, Alec, and Brett as they discuss their backgrounds in the sciences; Del Lago's genesis and current goals and focus; Brett's nanotech company, Nanomedical Diagnostics; Alec's program, Competency X; and all about the use of digital badges and how they help support authentic, competency-based learning and work experiences that help students build rich, digital portfolios to support their college applications and career aspirations. This week, Matt and Courtney talk with young learners from Marcia Buker Elementary School in Richmond, ME. They talk about a project they just completed, with the driving question "How do we/doctors know what is going on inside of us?" These two young men researched about pill cams and x-rays, built a model of the digestive system using clear tubes, water bottles, and foam board. They also talk about how they were setting goals, making reflections, asking for advice, etc. Seems like a lot of guiding principles in action!

PAVE has a long and proud tradition of adopting emerging technologies to improve their students’ experience. The innovation has often been developed in silos and as a result has meant an eclectic approach that has made applying any type of learning or learner analytics challenging. The PAVE strategic plan has an aspirational goal to ensure that 100% of PAVE courses has a blended approach to learning with bare minimum requirements determined to be set as a minimum benchmark. The blended learning project aims to provide a consistent blended learning hub for all courses that will have varying amounts of data. A basic dashboard that focuses on the active components of the learning will be created to sit within a default Blackboard shell.
