This week's guest is a long time friend of mine (we go back to 7th grade together, circa 1963), Tim Lorsch, Nashville musician/sideman, who has created a one-man performance piece called "The Suitcase." The show was inspired when Tim unexpectedly received an old suitcase that had formerly belonged to his great uncle before being sent to Auschwitz, where he was killed by the Nazis. The suitcase triggered a flood of family memories and emotions, so Tim packaged it all into a one hour performance and has been taking it on the road, performing it in venues across the country. You'll learn all about it when you join us in this episode of Pizza Quest with Peter Reinhart. You'll also learn a lot about "looping," a technique Tim uses to layer his music into overlapping montages used in the show and, also, in his recordings in general.Note: If you would like Tim to bring The Suitcase to your town, you can write to him at info@thesuitcase.world.Click here for the video versions of Pizza Quest. Today we find out how to bridge philosophy, psychology and management science to understand how businesses can enable a "good society". We are joined by two experts in this field, Antoinette Weibel and Otti Vogt to find out what questions we need to be asking. Professor Dr. Antoinette Weibel is full professor for human resource management at the University of St. Gallen. She is President of the Executive Committee of the Institute for Systemic Management and Public Governance at the University of St.Gallen, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Institute for Media and Communications Management and the Institute for Business Ethics at the University of St.Gallen. Her current core project, ‘Good Organisations', asks how organisations can become better members of society. Otti is a disruptive thought leader with over 20 years experience in implementing strategic business change in multi-cultural, complex businesses and in crafting human-centric learning organisations. As COO and Chief Transformation officer in ING, he was until recently accountable for ING's global digital transformation programme and continuous optimisation of operational service performance for more than 20m customers worldwide. He is also a certified leadership coach, associate of the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI) and was recently named Top 20 Global Thought Leader on Agile. Just over 10 years ago, I had my first conversation about the idea that would become Strava with serial entrepreneurs Mark Gainey and Michael Horvath. They talked to me about their bold objective of building the world's largest community of athletes. Since then, they've achieved that goal, touching over 90 million athletes and logging over five billion activities across more than 30 sports in virtually every country in the world. While subscriptions have always been a part of Strava, in the past year, they've moved some of their most popular features behind the paywall and an introduced a bunch of new features for paying subscribers. I recently interviewed David Lorsch, Strava’s CRO for the inaugural D2C Summit, a new conference I co-created with Global Media Association FIPP, and want to share that conversation with you here on the podcast. We discussed how Strava determined what should be free and what should be paid as they build a subscription business around a social platform, and how to guide members to make the most of their membership. Do you ever struggle with trusting yourself and your body? Or just need to know that your feelings are totally normal? Our guest today opens up about some of those moments in her life and how we can choose to show up with vulnerability - even when we don't have all of the answers. Amy Geis Lorsch is an amazing singer/songwriter that I came across while podcast bingeing, and I’m so glad I did. She writes this raw, vulnerable music that so many people connect with. She attended Brigham Young University and participated in their music group: BYU Noteworthy. She’s a Utah native, but has also spent time in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. Episode 16 of the Talking About Organizations Podcast about the classic article “Differentiation and Integration in Complex Organizations”, published by Paul Lawrence and Jay Lorsch in Administrative Science Quarterly in 1967. In this classic work, Lawrence and Lorsch investigate the relation between organizational characteristics and their environment, and stipulate that an organization's economic performance is determined by its ability to meet integration and differentiation requirements according to their environment.Original release can be found here: https://www.talkingaboutorganizations.com/e16/

Agency theory emphasizes the importance of an independent board chair in balancing CEO power and controlling management’s self‐interest (Krause, Semadeni and Cannella, 2014; Krause, Semadeni and Withers, 2016; Withers and Fitza, 2017). Such has been known to be the key reason for separating the roles of the CEO and the board chair (Finkelstein and D’Aveni, 1994; Lorsch and MacIver, 1989). The working relationship between the CEO and the board chair is, therefore, important and could determine the success or failure of the firm. However, despite the fact that the leadership roles of the CEO and the board chair form one of the most important dyadic relationships in large firms, anchored on goal interdependence, we know very little about it especially on how this relationship develops and indeed on its consequences. For example, under what circumstances is this relationship likely to be stronger or weaker? What is the impact of this relationship on firm performance? Drawing on social interdependence theory, this lecture explores these questions, contributing to the theory and literature of corporate governance, in general and board dynamics, in particular.

Another convenient featurette to introduce people to this management classic - contingency theory! Join Ralph as he summarizes our reading by Lawrence and Lorsch, covers key points from the discussion and even adds some (more) of his experience-based insight! Advocates of contingency theory for organizations argue that an optimum approach to structural differentiation depends – is contingent – on the external and local conditions where an organization functions. This represents a departure from assumptions from the scientific management theories of Taylor and Fayol that we discussed in previous episodes of the show. It shifts the focus of organizational scholars beyond strictly internal dynamics and structure and places greater emphasis on an organization’s alignment with its external environment. Lawrence and Lorsch used the data they collected to argue that the most economically successful organizations were the ones that managed to fulfil the dual goal of differentiation (to cope with environmental uncertainty) and integration (to align the work of highly differentiated departments).
Join us as we conclude our discussion of Contingency Theory of organizations, as outlined by Lawrence and Lorsch in their 1967 paper on integration and differentiation. In part 2 we finish up our deliberation on the nature of the environments, puzzle over what are the integrative devices, touch upon power and authority and finish up by proposing some practical take-aways that contingency theory has to offer a modern scholar and/or practitioner!
In this episode, we read the classic article “Differentiation and Integration in Complex Organizations” published in 1967 in Administrative Science Quarterly. In this work, Lawrence and Lorsch investigate the relation between organizational characteristics and their environment, and stipulate that an organization’s economic performance is determined by its ability to meet integration and differentiation requirements according to their environment. The paper is based on a comparative study of six industrial organizations and data was obtained via questionnaires and interviews with senior executives. The researchers compare the degree of integration and differentiation between subgroups in each company (i.e., sales, production and research and development subsystems) as they attempt to meet requirements from their sub-environments (i.e., science, market and technical-economic). The paper shows that the most economic successful organizations were the ones that managed to fulfil the dual goal of differentiation and integration. Finally, the authors explore the conditions that lead to more or less effectiveness in integrative devices. So, how does integration and differentiation happen? And what does it mean to meet requirements from the environment? Join us as we explore these concepts and ideas in Episode 16!
Contractor Success Map with Randal DeHart | Contractor Bookkeeping And Accounting Services
This Podcast Is Episode Number 0138 And It Will Be About Seven Unique Shocks Every Contractor Experiences The foundation of this article came in part from an article by Michael E. Porter, Jay W. Lorsch and Nitin Nohria published in the Harvard Business Review. I am a huge fan of Michael E. Porter because of his grasp and understanding of how business works and his ability to convert complex business strategies that anyone can easily understand. During the time when we owned an operated construction contracting companies Michael E. Porter's five forces model opened my eyes and provided a great deal of insight regarding how and why things changed in the construction market. Ten Unique Shocks Every Contractor Experiences Shock #01 - You Can't Run Your Construction Contracting Company Between the demands of customers, clients, bankers, payroll tax returns, sales tax returns (if that applies to you), vendors, suppliers and everybody and everything outside your construction company you do not have the time to run your own construction company. When you first start your contracting company all you needed to worry about was finding that first customer, make a proposal, do the work and get paid. Everything seemed so simple, the sun was shining, and birds were singing, you had work to do and money was coming in, life was good! After a short while you got a few more customers and had less time to get everything done and when those pesky warranty issues or call-backs came from the first few jobs came rolling in that meant doing work for FREE instead of focusing all of your time and energy on new work that was going to pay new money. When You Hired Construction Workers And The Bookkeeper Things Got Real Interesting! You will not be briefed on everything because the first few times your staff tried to tell you something you were already overloaded with information and decisions and the last thing you needed was to hear was the restroom is out of toilet paper! So you growled at them and from that point forward they decided to not tell you anything unless they absolutely had too. Your Project Manager and Bookkeeper know everything that is going on but they will not tell you until just before or just after disaster strikes. That is why it is so vitally important to chose the right Project Manager and Bookkeeper or Contractors Bookkeeping Service for your executive team. Shock #02 - Passing Out Orders Because Think You Are The Boss Is Very Costly O.K. you are the boss, the owner of the construction firm and it is your name on the sign. You can be: #1 - "Super Star With Helpers" and struggle financially and emotionally with your contracting company your entire life. #2 - "Leader With Vision" building a contracting company everyone will want to be a part of and do it like you are going after Moby Dick, in a row boat, with tartar sauce! We have all worked for contractors who are a "Super Star With Helpers". They are the ones who criticize everything and make sure everyone who works for them feels like an idiot. A "Leader With Vision" gets the right people on-board, delegates tasks, offers guidance, support in the form of Scope+Time+Resources and holds people accountable for the outcome. If you are clear on what type of construction work your company does and the clients you want then everybody will pull together in the same direction. Shock #03 - You Will Not Know What Is Going On Unless You Do Some Detective Work No matter what you think as the owner you are viewed by your employees as the "enemy" "management" "greedy business person" and more choice words that I will not mention and therefore to varying degrees they will withhold information from you in an attempt to get even or exert control. The Root Cause is from birth to emancipation every one of us were told "No" by our parents and guardians while we were growing up and as a result we developed a paradigm in varying degrees that if people with authority don't give us everything we want they are mean and therefore the "enemy" and worse. This is as it should be, because it is human nature and you need to understand it. One popular phrase our outsourced contractor bookkeeping services clients like: "We Live In A World Of What Is...Not What Should Be" - Randalism. Ask open ended, gentle, non-threatening questions of your staff and expect they will be as open and honest as their past psychological conditioning and current Paradigm will allow them. No matter what they say do not condemn them or react badly. Either respond positively or maintain a neutral expression. To do otherwise will kill any chance of them ever sharing anything with you again. Then do whatever you deem appropriate after having taken time to cool off. Next ask your vendors, suppliers, banker, tax preparer and most importantly your Construction Accounting Service what they see and know about your construction company and ask about local, national and international trends that may affect the performance of you company in the coming months. Shock #04 - You Are Always On Stage Giving A Performance And Being Judged #1 - Everything you say and do as well as what you don't say and do is being watched, interpreted, filtered, judged and spread like wildfire. #2 - The way you dress, eat, your wristwatch, smartphone, rings, chains, bracelets, hairstyle and thousands more things about you are constantly being observed and mentally cataloged, observed, interpreted, filtered, judged and spreads like wildfire. #3 - Take a lesson from the great leaders of history who remained calm under fire and never let them see you sweat. #4 - As a contractor you take over where your employees parents left off. - Randalism Shock #05 - Don't Over socialize With Your Employees According to Aesop "Familiarity Breeds Contempt". Your employees look up to you and if they get to know you too well they will begin to see your faults and notice things about you that will diminish your authority in their eyes. Just think about the final scenes in film classic "The Wizard of Oz" when the off camera booming voice says: "PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!" Shock #06 - You Are Only Human You need to take care of yourself, get plenty of rest, drink lots of healthy fluids, exercise regularly and don't let anything keep you awake at night. Read good books and get as much "Bread for the Head" as possible. There will be times when you do not feel like going to work, times when you are depressed, grouchy, irritable and much more. During those times take the Nike's advice and "Just Do It". Shock #07 - You Need The Truth About Owning And Operating A Construction Company To get to the truth about your construction company you must go on a journey which is Four Levels Deep and like most successful strategies in life it is simple but not easy. The Four Levels Of Truth In Construction Number One - What contractors want to hear Number Two - What contractors want to believe Number Three - Everything else Number Four - Truth A Story To Illustrate The Four Levels Of Truth In Construction What Contractors Want To Hear - One evening after work, a group of contractors met at the Contractor Business Round Table which is the neighborhood tavern with a round table, pitcher of beer and four contractors. They talked about how tough it is to get profitable jobs no matter what the economy is like. When times are good it is hard to find employees, when times are tough the phone doesn't ring. Everyone agreed there was nothing anyone could do about it. What Contractors Want To Believe - A short while later they talked about making money and agreed that really big contractors make most of the money and little contractors were doomed to struggle. Everything Else - One of the contractors suggested maybe they could ask one of the larger more profitable contractors and find out what they did that made the difference. This of course made the other contractors a bit uncomfortable and then it happened and they all heard and felt the dreaded Snap-Crackle-Pop! The contractor who suggested asking for help experienced a paradigm shift and broke through to the other side. This contractor began leveling up! Suddenly they all remembered what that The Contractors Accountant, Randal DeHart, had said about leveling up. "As you develop your Business Strategy your income is likely to increase. The impact on your friends will not be pleasant as you will be proving that good people can win in the construction game by playing it with high moral and ethical standards and the willingness to try something different." Truth - Is whatever you believe and you will look for evidence to support your truth. Part of my truth comes from some of the writings of Og Mandino: ------------------------------------------------------------ A Salesman’s Prayer - By Og Mandino Oh creator of all things help me for this day I go into the world naked and alone, and without your hand to guide me I will wander far from the path which leads to success and happiness. I ask not for garments or gold or even opportunities equal to my ability; instead guide me that I may acquire ability equal to my opportunities. You have taught the lion and eagle to hunt and prosper with teeth and claw. Teach me how to hunt with words and prosper with love so that I may be a lion among men and an eagle in the marketplace. Help me to remain humble through obstacles and failures yet hide not from mine eyes the prize that will come with victory. Assign me tasks to which other have failed, yet guide me to pluck the seeds of success from their failures. Confront me with fears that will temper my Spirit yet endow me with courage to laugh at my misgivings. Spare me sufficient days to reach my goals; yet help me to live this day as though it be my last. Guide me in my words that they may bear fruit; yet silence me from gossip that none be maligned. Discipline me in the habit of trying and trying again yet show me the way to make use of the Law of Averages. Favor me with alertness to recognize opportunity, yet endow me with patience which will concentrate my strength. Bathe me in good habits that the bad ones may drown; yet grant me compassion for weakness in others. Suffer me to know that all things shall pass; yet help me to count my blessings of today. Expose me to hate so it not be a stranger; yet fill my cup with love to turn strangers into friends. But all these things be only if thy will; I am a small and lonely grape clutching the vine, yet thou hast made me different from all others. Verily there must be a special place for me. Guide me, help me, show me the way to become all you planned for me when my seed was planted and selected by you to sprout in the vineyard of the world. Help this humble salesman, guide me God. ------------------------------------------------------------ If you suspect that I care deeply about all Contractors and their families you are absolutely right! Prior experience, environmental factors, cognitive ability, and emotions play a large part in a student’s world view or understanding of the world they live in. The world view influences the way knowledge and skills are acquired, changed, and retained. There are generally 3 contemporary theories of learning teachers use to guide their teaching practices: Cognitivism, Transformative Theory, and Constructivism. CognitivismCognitivism stems from Gestalt Psychology and focuses on the learner and memory. In Gestalt theory, psychologists believe that humans learn by making sense of the relationships between new and old information. The human mind views entities as part of a bigger picture and as components of more complex systems (Cherry 2019). Cognitive theories of learning focus on the learner instead of the environment and have two underlying assumptions: 1) the memory system of the brain is structured and an operational processor of information; 2) prior knowledge plays a key role in learning (Smith 2018). Because each individual has a unique view of the world, humans create their own learning experiences and uniquely decipher information in ways that may differ from others. Transformative TheoryTransformative learning theory explains how people adjust and reinterpret meaning (Taylor 2008).It is related to the mental process of creating change in a frame of reference (Mezirow 1997). A frame of reference defines the way humans view the world and emotions play a large part in creating that view (Illeris 2001). Adults typically reject information that conflicts with their views and understanding of the world. Frame of reference is made up of habits of mind and points of view. Habits of mind (such as mindset or persistence) are very difficult to change but possible, however points of view may change over time as a result of reflection, criticism, or feedback (Mezirow 1997). Transformative Learning occurs when a student critically ponders evidence in support of competing understandings and points of view (Mezirow 1997). ConstructivismConstructivism is a concept often mentioned when discussing science classroom-learning environments. In fact, much of the current science education research and literature has focused on constructivism. Constructivism is a philosophy about how people learn, and specifically addresses how knowledge is acquired and constructed. More specifically, “according to the constructivist view, meaningful learning is a cognitive process in which individuals make sense of the world in relation to the knowledge which they already have constructed, and this sense-making process involves active negotiation and consensus building” (Fraser 1998, p. 13). Science educators may agree that constructivism is ideally more desirable over more traditional methods of instruction, such as direct instruction; however, many debate exactly how knowledge is built. The two primary descriptions of constructivism derive from Jean Piaget’s (1954) theory of cognitive development and Lev Vygotsky’s (1978) social constructivism. Cognitive constructivism focuses on internal cognitive processes (Piaget 1954) and an individual’s attempts to make sense of the world (Von Glasersfeld 1995), whereas social constructivism stresses the significance of society, culture, and language (Lemke 2001), where knowledge is socially constructed and acquired in specific social and cultural contexts. Despite their differences, both branches of constructivist thought stress the importance of experiential learning and acknowledge that motivation is crucial for the construction of knowledge and the progression of conceptual change. The literature contains many testimonials and experimental research studies that support the idea that meaningful learning is tied to experience (e.g. Angelo 1990; Bodner 1986; Bybee 1993; Caprio 1994; Lawson 1992; Lawson et al. 1990, 1993; Leonard 1989a, 1989b; Lord 1994; Lorsch & Tobin 1995; Roth 1994; Seymour 1995). The National Research Council’s 1999 Report, How People Learn (Brandsford, Brown, & Cocking 2000), is also in concert with the constructivist view and suggests inquiry-based learning as a way to have students doing real scientific investigations similar to the way in which practicing scientists define problems, formulate and test hypotheses, and draw conclusions. Inquiry-based learning has many nonscience classroom applications as well.Currently there are many models of constructivist learning (e.g., Glasson & Lalik 1993; Hewson & Tabachnick 1999; Nussbaum & Novick 1982). However, David Palmer (2005) examined the extent to which motivational strategies have been considered in the design of existing constructivist informed teaching models and found that existing models were inadequate in explicitly integrating motivation. Palmer also found that some models, in fact, conflict with the currently accepted views of motivation. Thus, new models integrating motivation and constructivism are needed. In a 2012 article by BGSU faculty Partin and Haney such a model is proposed and they discuss implications for further research in this area. References Angelo, T. A. (1990).
