Gordon emailed: "Hi Marc, Thanks for the magnificent podcast. I listen to it on long car rides and the music is terrific. I especially love the Celtic Star Wars tunes. I hope to catch you at a forthcoming Ren Faire. I'm a college professor and screenwriter and have recently completed a feature female-driven adventure screenplay that incorporates aspects of Scottish folklore. It's called The Storm King and is about Skye Blackwood, the 18-year-old reluctant successor to a remote village’s leader. She's forced to take up the mantle when the adults of her community, including her older brother, abruptly vanish, pushing her to set out with a ramshackle team to find them and become the leader she never wanted to be. The script recently made the top 10% of the Academy Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowships, which is a top screenwriting competition. I'm excited! I listened to a good number of your podcasts while writing it and the music was inspiring. I realize this is a total shot in the dark, but if you know of any managers, producers, or reps who'd be interested in reading such a thing, I'd be very grateful for the referral (and I'd absolutely become a patron). Mark Twain wrote: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. #217: 10 Years of Great Irish & Celtic Music, a Retrospective

Irish and Celtic Music Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 23, 2015 199:06

On July 28, 2005, the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was born from my love of Celtic music. I had been cultivating that love through my Celtic Music Magazine which featured album reviews and free Celtic MP3 downloads from many of the bands on this podcast. The podcast quickly overtook the magazine in popularity. I had three main goals when I created this show. First, to help indie Celtic bands find new fans. Second, to give Celtic music fans a free, easily downloadable show where they could enjoy the music of their cultural heritage. Third, I wanted a Celtic radio show that was focused on the music. What's that phrase: "Less talk, more music". But I wanted it to be true. So I have long sets and usually short breaks where I share news and feedback. There are a bunch of additional reasons, including a latent desire to be a DJ. I'll tell you more about it later. In the meantime, I want to share with you some of the best Celtic music featured in the podcast over the past ten years. Every month, I host the Celtic Top 20 where I ask you to vote for your favorite songs in each episode of the podcast. I've done this since almost the first year. That's how I created this show. It's the songs that fans of the podcast voted for over the last ten years. I just went in and cut down ten hours of music to a meer three hours. I hope you will celebrate your love of Celtic music with me and these amazing Celtic bands with music from The Tea Merchants, Heather Alexander, The McDades, Colleen Raney & Colm MacCarthaigh, Jamie Laval and Ashley Broder, Clandestine, Athas, Sligo Rags, Navan, Jimi McRae And Sam Okoo, Heather Dale, Hawp, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Round the House in the first hour. You'll hear The Elders, Mary Knickle, Kennedy’s Kitchen, Tara MacKenzie, Fiddler’s Green, Rising Gael, Rambling Sailors, Bow Triplets, Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer, Poitin, Ockham’s Razor, Gwilym Morus, LabGraal, The Selkie Girls in the second hour. Then we'll finish the show with Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones, Maidens IV, The Gothard Sisters, The Killdares, Tullamore, Marc Gunn, Across the Pond, Anne Roos, Holly Kirby, Molly Bauckham, Tallymoore, Samantha Gillogly & Tim Maurice, Stout Pounders, Rathkeltair, Black 47, The Rogues, Flashpoint. CeltiSode 2010!Happy (Belated) St. Patrick's Day, Everyone!!First off, let me please humbly apologize for the HUGE delay that this episode has weathered. Thank you so much for your patience! I truly hope you find the show well worth the wait. :):) Whether you hear this on St. Paddy's itself or tune in during any other time of the year, I hope this day brings nothing but joy to you and yours, and that you enjoy this slightly super-sized episode as much as I do. (And that's after listening to it a million times during its arrangement, so that's saying something! ;D)This show is chock-full of fantastic music, made by some unbelievably skilled & gifted musicians! Some of this is work I've collected over many, many years (through places like myriad renaissance festivals, Thistle & Shamrock shows, and a good few Celtic festivals), while other pieces were acquired more recently; explicitly for play on this show. Celtic music has been a part of my heart for as long as I can remember, and I hope its soulfulness, passion and playfulness always will. :)Finding and playing the best of pod-safe Celtic music for you seems a superb way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (musically speaking)- but for me, this music can make any day of the year an occasion. Plus, what a gift! I have found more phenomenal music in searching for pieces for this podcast than I can count! What a delight to've found sublime chanteuses like Maria Dunn, Beth Patterson and the ladies of Maidens IV!! And what a blessing to be able to share such personal favorites as The Rogues & Lothlorien, as well as a more recent favorite; the enthralling, enchanting power of Omnia! Each of these pieces hold their own magic and beauty, whether it be sweet & lilting or raucous and irreverent. And don't just relegate this lovely brand of tune-age to St. Paddy's! Celtic music goes beautifully at pubs, renaissance fairs, faerie-themed events, barn dances, and all kinds of events where merry-making is called for- even funerals on occasion- so keep it in mind the next time you go out with family & friends!Whether you're Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx or Scots-Irish (like yours truly), if you're English, German, Italian, Asian, Greek, Indian, American, Black Irish or French, may the luck of the Irish always be with you, and may you find your own pot of gold in pleasures big and small on this clover-filled, merrily-jigging day! (Just be careful with the Guinness, Harp Lager & Goldschläger, please! We want you around to celebrate the NEXT St. Paddy's, too! ;D)Now let me pick my fiddle back up again, and have a merry St. Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List1. Dougie Maclean - Caledonia2. Anne Roos - Considine's Grove3. Will Kriski - Kerry's Jig 4. Great Big Sea - Company of Fools 5. Sligo Rags - The Whiskey Never Lies 6. Athas - Boys Of Tandragee/Tuesday Morning/Checkered Blanket 7. Beth Patterson - Ye Jacobites By Name8. Omnia - Etrezomp-Ni Kelted9. Ceann - Almost Irish 20. Blaggards - Irish RoverKey:Band name = Artist Website Song Title = Band MySpace (Both where available- both soon to come!)*Bold Italic = Background Accompaniment       NOTE: For those of you who may not know, the beginning of the word "Celtic" is pronounced with a hard "c,"making the word sound like "ˈkel-tik."If you use it beginning with an "s" sound (or what's called "a soft c"), that refers to the pro. basketball team from Boston; not the groups of Indo-European peoples & languages predominantly found in Wales, Ireland & the Scottish Highlands. (Although other parts of the world still identify strongly with their Celtic roots, such as Caledonia in Spain, Newfoundland in Canada, Brittany in France, as well as much of the American south; especially those in and around the Appalachian & Rocky ountains.)Don't believe me? Listen to some of the folk music from these areas (including much of old as well as new American Country- from Bluegrass on), and see if you don't hear a Celtic lilt to many of fiddle tunes & melodies! Other grand links for those of you who love Celtic music:The Thistle & Shamrock on NPRCeltic RadioCeltic MP3's (.com)Irish Sayings, Toasts & Blessings-and for those of you who're as lost with reading Irish as I am: How to Pronounce Irish(But go to these and all the other bands' pages listed in the Tracks section! I really mean it when I say in the show that there's so much good music made by these and other artists that I could create a whole other podcast (or two) from the tremendous work that's out there!!)Tapadh Leibh. all!Yours Forever in Song,DJ Selchie

Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List:1. Dougie Maclean - Caledonia 2. Anne Roos - Considine's Grove 3. Will Kriski - Kerry's Jig 4. Great Big Sea - Company of Fools 5. Sligo Rags - The Whiskey Never Lies 6. Athas - Boys Of Tandragee/Tuesday Morning/Checkered Blanket 7. Beth Patterson - Ye Jacobites By Name8. Omnia - Etrezomp-Ni Kelted9. Burning Bridget Cleary - The Saucy Sailor 10. Rattle the Boards - The Mason's Apron (Reel)17. Mike Hanrahan - Thousands Are Sailing 18. Paddy's Pig - Pat Works On the Railway 19.

This simple effort will help the artist, AND it will spread the word about our free podcast. – Link to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast Download this week's podcast.       This Week: “The Earl of Statten” by Celtic Stone from Druid Wood “My Cavan Girl” by Tara MacKenzie from Simple Irish Ballads And Songs For Singing “The Fermoy Lasses Medley” by The Nettles from The Nettles “Loch Lomond” by Jesse Ferguson, The Bard of Cornwall “Homeward Bound/Swedish Wedding March/Hag at the Churn/Out on the Ocean” by Culann's Hounds from Year of the Dog “Kilkelly, Ireland” by Ciara Considine from O Mo Chroi “Dancin' Cross The Strings” by Steve and Ruth Smith from Dancin' Cross The Strings “Bolinree” by Switchback from Bolinree “Dunje Rajke Druske Kara Manke – Kyustendika” by Teribus from “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bombard” “For We Are Many” by Ceallach from For We Are Many “Tippin' It Up to Nancy” by Finn's Fury from What About Ya? “The Juniper” by Sora from Light “Angel from Antrim” by Hair of the Dog from Donegal If you enjoy the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, subscribe to the Celtic MP3s Music Magazine.
