On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Greg Davis! Greg and I go pretty far back - I think I first covered him on Foxy Digitalis when “Curling Pond Woods” came out in 2004, but this year he's got a new LP from Asterisk, his awesome hip-hop/beats project. With a slew of incredible MCs on board, “No School” is fun, deep, and an incredible record that invites repeat listens. We get into all of that before going long on Brian Eno & John Cale, Norma Tanega, Stevie Wonder, Gerry Rafferty, Nina Simone, MJ, and loads more!Listen to all of Greg's picks HEREAsterisk “No School”Autumn RecordsGreg's WebsiteGreg's BandcampGreg on InstagramSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. Próximo programa: Skeleton Crew / Creature Commandos T1 / What If? T3.

What The Riff?!? makes another "stab" at Halloween with these theme songs, movie and TV music, and rock songs with a bent towards the macabre. We hope you enjoy this second "Halloween" special! Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran This is the breakthrough song off Duran Duran's Rio album. It was inspired by the Big Bad Wolf in the Little Red Riding Hood story. It is also wone of the first times where video popularity drove the success of the band, with Duran Duran on constant play for the new MTV station.Dead Man's Party by Oingo Boingo Danny Elfman fronted this new wave band before he became famous for his work on film scores. It also appeared in the comedy film "Back to School" starring Rodney Dangerfield. This Is Halloween by Marilyn Manson Oingo Boingo wrote this track for "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and shock rocker Marilyn Manson takes on this cover.Theme from the "Harry Potter" film series The Wizarding world of Harry Potter has been an enduring franchise, and this music draws us into that world from the first few notes.Pet Sematary by The Ramones Steven King was a big fan of the Ramones, and invited the band to his place in Maine. While there Dee Dee Ramone wandered into the basement with a copy of King's "Pet Sematary" and returned an hour later with the lyrics to this song.Bad Things by Jace Everett "True Blood" is a series on HBO based on a novel called "The Southern Vampire Mysteries," and the show portrays vampires in a campy, dark comedy style. Country singer-songwriter Jace Everett provided the intro music to this series.Werewolf Bar Mitzvah by Donald Glover and Tracy Morgan A skit in the television series "30 Rock" would produce this song. Originally a 7-second clip from a skit, it was turned into a full fledged Halloween novelty song due to popular demand.Witch Doctor by David Seville The origins of this song go back to 1958, where Seville tells the story of how a guy learned to talk to girls from a witch doctor friend. It has become a well known novelty song covered by a number of artists.Devil in Disguise by Elvis Presley The King dropped this single in 1963 about a girl who uses her charm to manipulate people to get what she wants. It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard singles chart. You're Dead by Norma Tanega Singer-songwriter and experimental musician Norma Tanega was better known for writing songs for Dusty Springfield. However, this song which she penned in 1966 was picked up for use in the vampire satire "What We Do In the Shadows" in 2014.Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band Folks, don't bet your soul against the Devil. But if you do, make sure you're the best fiddler that there has ever been. Charlie Daniels would peak at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 with this song.Runnin' with the Devil by Van Halen The first album that Van Halen produced was a monster in itself, and this track was the first one on the album. It is a great introduction to the band, not only for Eddie Van Halen's guitar work, but also for David Lee Roth's screams, Michael Anthony's high harmonies, and Alex Van Halen's percussion work.
Norma Tanega lived an extraordinary life. She was a talented folk musician whose work captured Bob Dylan's attention. She had a hit song and a record deal. She was the longtime hidden romantic partner of Dusty Springfield. So why don't more people know her name? And why does her story feel so incomplete? Lexi Pandell does her part to fill in the gaps in Norma's history.
Happy Pride Month! In this week's episode, we take a look at incredible LGTBQ+ folks from history. Hannah shares the story of German physician and sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, and Lori covers Margot Heuman, the first queer Jewish woman known to have survived concentration camps during World War II. Sheena covers artist and musician Norma Tanega.

As broadcast October 29, 2021 with plenty of extra nightmares for you podcast trick-or-treaters. Tonight a rare occurrence went down on the air, as both guest artist selectors Freedom Fry and our seemingly faithful host Danno were possessed by different demons and rebaptized in blood. The Darkness as he is now known welcomed Phantom Fright to the show to have some REAL fun with Halloween on the air, and the guests played horror film soundtrack favorites and talked about some of their favorite moments in the movies. However, the host (or whatever vile thing The Darkness is) took it several steps too far during the first hour in committing an abduction of one of his young devotees then murdering and burying that poor soul, watching them rise from the grave as a zombie, cause depraved havoc in the night, and regret their ultimate sealed fate as a member of the undead army. Not to be missed for Halloween enthusiasts & big props to Bruce & Marie fka Freedom Fry for joining this nuthouse of a radio experience.Tracklisting:Part I (00:00)Michael Jackson – Thriller (The Reflex Halloween edit)Lyn Christopher – Take Me With YouSeals & Crofts – Sweet Green FieldsWar – Slippin Into DarknessAngela Alexander & JD Saddler – Don't Make Me Kill YouNorma Tanega – You're Dead Part II (30:03)The Revels – Midnight StrollKip Tyler – She's My WitchWillie West & The High Society Brothers – The Devil Gives Me EverythingThe Love Unlimited Orchestra – Midnight & YouLeon Haywood – I Wanna Do Something Freaky To YouGhost Funk Orchestra – MourningGhost Funk Orchestra – Step Back Wild ChildGhost Funk Orchestra – Fuzzy LogicGhost Funk Orchestra – Pause I Part III (59:07)Freedom Fry – MonsterCreedence Clearwater Revival – Midnight SpecialFlanagan & Allen – Run Rabbit RunAl Bowlly with Ray Noble & His Orchestra – Midnight, The Stars & YouHarry Belafonte – Banana Boat (Day-O)Kay Starr with Orchestra – Headless HorsemanMagnet – Willow's Song Part IV (67:09)Freedom Fry – Zombie LoveTito & Tarantula – After DarkHubert Kah – The Picture (Francois K 12” remix)Roger Bartlett – Fool For A BlondeLana Del Rey – Season Of The WitchJoy Division – Love Will Tear Us ApartNick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand

Norma Tanega was a soulful American Latina artist, a one-hit wonder who never wanted stardom, but who fell in love with Dusty Springfield, the Queen of White Soul, who wanted stardom very much. They kept their contentious love affair from the public, but Norma had to leave behind Dusty's glittering world for the pain it concealed. Sources for this episode can be found on our website.
How exciting to go straight from Black History Month to Women’s History Month! Over the course of this coming month, I am going to feature programs on my favoritest singers of all time! For the first episode, I break with normal Countermelody protocol and feature the quintessential pop singer, Dusty Springfield, whose career spanned the early 1960s through the mid-1990s. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to do an all-Dusty episode and since this past week was the 22nd anniversary of her premature death at the age of 59 of cancer, the time seemed right to present her to my listeners in all her eclectic glory. Because we are celebrating women this month, I decided to present Dusty singing material exclusively by female composers and lyricists, including all of extant recordings of songs by the great Carole King, most in collaboration with her longtime songwriting partner, the late Gerry Goffin. Other songwriters represented include Janis Ian, Karla Bonoff, Scherrie Payne, Norma Tanega, and Carole Pope; lyricists include Dorothy Fields and Marilyn Bergman, and vocal guest stars include Tom Jones and Martha Reeves and The Vandellas. This week’s bonus episode, available to Patreon subscribers, features further Dusty performances, both live and studio. Come and let me guide you through the glory of All Things Dusty! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. A shamelessly indulgent episode, as Kirsty, Stella and Dan rabbit on at length about why and how much they love the 2014 horror mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows, its current TV incarnation and other spin-offs. It's mostly spoiler-free, for the uninitiated (apart from a spoiler section beginning at 01:20:48), but it does contain some swearing. Which is becoming a habit.
