Ten years ago, Pearl Jam headlined a festival called the Global Citizen's Festival in Central Park where the mission was to raise funding in order to end world poverty. They were joined by the likes of Beyonce, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Sting and others who wanted to get this message across. It was their only US show in 2015 and was broadcast on network TV, something that Pearl Jam hasn't had a lot of opportunities to do in their history. The 12-song set certainly has it's highlights. For one time one time only, Beyonce got to share the stage with Eddie for a performance of Redemption Song. It's not something that's gone over well across the community over the years, but we'll give it it's due and discuss the connection the two of them were able to make on stage together. The other big moment from this show is Ed getting to tell the origin story of Unthought Known, having wrote it in a hotel that overlooked Central Park. We'll also talk about Big Bird, pirate rabbis, dating origin stories and why Bill Nye should probably stay away from rock 'n' roll stages. We invite our Patron, Richard Green, on to talk about his personal experience at this show, and if you stay tuned until the end you'll hear a eulogy for a loved one who left us too soon. This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

In this grunge-fueled episode of Big Rich, TD, and Fletch, the debate gets loud and flannel-clad as the crew battles it out over who reigns supreme in Top of the Rock — Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Plus, they each reveal the one concert they refuse to miss if the band rolls into town. And don't miss Rich's surprisingly heartfelt (and slightly passive-aggressive) tips on how to be a better listener — especially if your name rhymes with "Schmeed."
On today's edition of the cast, we take a look at the origins of grunge music and its place on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks charts, and how Nirvana's debut on the chart back in 1991 signaled a seismic shift in music and created a whole new sub culture in the process. We examine how some other grunge acts including Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains flourished in this era, and made a name for themselves in the short lived era that grunge had. We also take a look at how some female singer-songwriters flourished on the chart in the mid 90's like Sarah McLachlan, and why they suddenly vanished from the airwaves as radio programmers shifted to a more male dominated sound that continued throughout the decade, further highlighting the sexism and ignoring women's contributions to music. We also play a tune from Boston's own Letters to Cleo, the classic "Here and Now".

The 1980s saw an explosion of independent record labels across the US, shaping the sound and spirit of underground music to this day. This week, Daniel House from Skin Yard and C/Z Records joins us as we dive into some of the finest labels whose DIY ethos, fearless experimentation, and raw energy broke away from the corporate music machine. One of the crucial American indie labels of the era was C/Z Records, the Seattle imprint that will forever be remembered as the second most important label in the burgeoning grunge scene. That being said, it was C/Z, not Sub Pop, who released the defining document of the new sound of the Pacific Northwest with 1986's Deep Six compilation - introducing Soundgarden, The Melvins, U-Men, Green River, Malfunkshun, and Skin Yard. Founded in 1985 by Chris Hanzek and Tina Casale, Skin Yard bassist Daniel House took over operation of C/Z in 1987, subsequently releasing music by Nirvana, Henry Rollins, Built To Spill, The Gits, Hammerbox, Presidents of the United States of America, 7 Year B---h, Coffin Break and many more. Skin Yard was a foundational band in the development of the grunge movement, not only due to the groundbreaking music they recorded between 1985 - 1991, but also the band members' other contributions to Seattle music. Aside from the aforementioned impact that House made with C/Z Records, guitarist Jack Endino would go on to produce and engineer some of the most enduring records of the era - including Nirvana's Bleach, and music by Mudhoney, Tad, Soundgarden, L7, and Screaming Trees. Lead singer Ben McMillan would form the band Gruntruck, and sadly passed away in 2008 at the age of 46. Drummer Matt Cameron is a world class musician who has been behind the kit for Soundgarden and, for the past 25 years, with Pearl Jam. Skin Yard Select is the brand new, limited collection of 14 songs loving curated by Daniel House and Jack Endino, culling tracks from their four studio albums, but also featuring enough rarities to please long-time fans. This beautiful package consists of seven individual 7" singles, each in their own sleeve and pressed on limited edition colored vinyl (or good ol' fashioned black). Better late than never...said no one who's ever listened to this crap! This (last) week I'm talking about the great Bill Belichick story and how I never want this to end. Then I'm spending a lot of time on the great city of Pittsburgh, Pearl Jam, the Pirates and lousy bars. Next we're on to FOUR Gripes this week: bad tattoos, racially stereotyping ride share drivers, talking at the urinal and drive by hand washing. It's mostly awful, but now I'm paying to record this trash so you should listen! #TellYourFriends
Our guest today is Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter Brandon. The multi-instrumentalist makes music that floats between alternative, R&B, and modern folk—crafting some of the smoothest, most delicate sounds you'll hear this year. With the release of his entirely self-produced debut album Before You Go, Brandon has firmly carved out a space of his own, drawing comparisons to artists like Dijon, Mk.Gee, and Frank Ocean. It's a beautifully restrained collection of alt-R&B, rich with emotional depth and intricate production that rewards repeat listens. While in LA, we sat down with Brandon to talk about the making of Before You Go, from recording in his college dorm to working in his own studio. He reflects on the influence of music education, the mentors who nurtured his creativity, and the wide range of artists—from Prince to Pearl Jam—that continue to shape his sound.Brandon: Instagram / Spotify Purchase Before You Go hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

MUSIC37 years after it was stolen from The Doors' front man's Paris gravesite, the bronze bust of Jim Morrison has been recovered.Jelly Roll brought out Eminem for his "Lose Yourself" Sunday night at Ford Field in Detroit. Watch it on YouTube. Pearl Jam did "Hunger Strike" by Temple of the Dog Sunday night in Pittsburgh and dedicated it to the late Chris Cornell. Sunday was the eighth anniversary of Cornell's death. Here is some audio from that night. Apparently Axl Rose's fall on stage during Guns n' Roses show in Mumbai, India on Saturday inspired the folks running their social media to poke fun at the frontman. The story of Nevermind, Nirvana's genre-defining breakthrough, is a familiar one. Less well known is the saga of Billboard's Modern Rock chart—and how college-rock staples of the 1980s like R.E.M. and The Cure gave way to heavier, more commercially dominant groups of the ‘90s like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and The Smashing Pumpkins. What sparked the grungification of the charts? How did Modern Rock become the new Top 40? And how did the Seattle sound pave the way for post-grunge bands like Sublime, Third Eye Blind, and even Creed? The final destination on Pearl Jam's spring 2025 tour will be Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a city that's no stranger to big time shows. Although they haven't been back there in 12 years, there was a time where the Steel City saw it's fair share of shows. From 1998-2006, there were five shows played, every one of them memorable in their own way. This episode covers their 2006 show from the Mellon Arena that kicked off the second leg of the North American tour that year with the band and the crowd so hot that the nearly melted the igloo. Sometimes you'll notice that certain Pearl Jam cities are known for having a song that's connected with them. For example, people usually connect Wash with Pittsburgh due to the umbrella moment in 2000. But at this show, another song developed a connection as they covered the Rolling Stones Waiting On A Friend for the first of a small handful of times. It was done to pay tribute to the Stones after opening for them at PNC Park the year prior, and it's a moment that the Yinzer crowd is proud of. Other great moments that we'll talk about include a monstrous Release to kick things off, an incredible version of Black with an It's OK tag, Stone's smokin' solo on RITFW and a plethora of Avocado songs that were kicked in high gear during this era. We'll also discuss how songs like Inside Job and Smile have continued to grow and become fan favorites throughout the years. We run down the entire setlist, but you'll want to stay tuned to stories from Javi's Nashville trip where he met not one, but two members of the band. You won't want to miss it! Denver-based punk group Dead Pioneers recently released their second album, PO$T AMERICAN, on Hassle Records. They’ve been opening for Pearl Jam on their U.S. tour this spring. KEXP’s Dusty Henry caught up with lead vocalist Gregg Deal to discuss the band’s rapid success, how their new album portrays disillusionment with modern America, and how the band reclaims and recontextualizes Indigenous representation seen in media – from Dances with Wolves through One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. In a divided moment in history, PO$T AMERICAN feels perfectly timed for imperfect times. “I know that there are different mediums out there that exist to create places of safety and understanding and articulation of frustration,” Deal says in the interview. “I know music is one of those places, I know art is one of those places, and I am grateful to have any part in either of those things.” Support the show: kexp.org/deeper Photo by Carlos CruzSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on another brand new episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we bring you part one of two episodes with Rodd Bland, son of the genius blues, soul, gospel & rhythm & blues singer Bobby “Blue” Bland. Best friends with B.B. King, & called the Frank Sinatra of the Blues – Bobby has more inductions into more museums and Hall of Fame's than an Amana Radar Range. Known for his soulful voice and his signature phrasing, Bobby was truly one of the greats. He also was also known for a guttural sound he made while singing that we get into on this episode. What started as a cue from a preacher became a sound that the ladies loved. No one did it like Bobby. Our conversation with Rodd dovetailed into many topics, including musicians such as ZZ Top to Pearl Jam, Taylor Hawkins to Jay-Z who were all influenced by “Blue.” We also talk about his father's late career resurgence thanks to films and television. From Spiderman the Animated Movie, to The Lincoln Lawyer and American Gangster, all roads seemed to lead back to “Blue”'s tunes in trailers, opening scenes in films and the like. Rodd tells us a rather touching story about when his father first heard one of his songs in a film that left us misty eyed. Along the way, we discuss what it was like touring in the Chitlin' Circuit, we touch on – albeit briefly – Don Robey and the Duke / Peacock years at the beginning of his career and a little known fact about Bobby that perhaps makes this episode an unleavened experience with a singer nicknamed as Sonny Boy that even Rodd didn't know. We had to call his mom to confirm it and she pretty much did. So sit back, take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast with Rodd Bland discussing everything from “Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City,” and “Further Up The Road” “Cry, Cry, Cry” & “I Pity The Fool.” But not, “Member's Only.” That one we saved for our Patreon page where we hear an exclusive, bonus episode, you won't hear anywhere else. Another child of a celebrity, interviewed by a child of a celebrity. Everyone has a story.
Dave and Cody are back to dissect the gut-punch that is Episode 5 of The Last of Us Season 2. From airborne spores to vengeance spirals, it's a heavy one—but don't worry, there's a little Pearl Jam to ease the pain.
Bobby addressed a listener who shared a MAJOR pet peeve she has with the show. Even Amy gets annoyed with it. Bobby shared his advice on balance and sacrifice after listening to a voicemail from a listener going through a rough season. Eddie talked about going to see his favorite band Pearl Jam last night with his 11-year-old son. He was shocked they didn’t play a HUGE hit. Bobby shared a list of the richest celebrities and how they made their money. We tried to determine whether Eddie got scammed by the person who ended up winning the auction for Amy’s 'game used' basketball from the free throw competition. Bobby talked about a guy who was attacked by an animal after he tried to get the ultimate selfie and a woman who was found alive after missing for 62 years.
