Today, my guest is Rich Lee. Rich Lee is a top lawyer, or was a top lawyer for two companies, and richly experienced the reality that dispute resolution today is driven by pain due to legacy dispute resolution forums and courts. Rich set out to change this with New Era Alternative Dispute Resolution, or ADR, and in just a minute, we're going to speak with rich Lee about dispute resolution. https://www.neweraadr.com/
J Darrin Gross I'd like to ask you Rich Lee, what is the BIGGEST RISK? Rich Lee I'll answer that kind of in like two parts really quickly, right? The first is, I think, you know, in the real estate industry, and actually in business in general, I think the biggest risk, you know, in a lot of just kind of business dealings is the relationship, right, and and maintaining good relationships, whether it's with an existing, you know, Counterparty, or, you know, a future counterparty or a former Counterparty. Relationships are everything you know. And so all the things you do right to mitigate that you know both before, and then, of course, you know during a relationship. And then, God forbid, you know if something sours in that relationship, I think that's, you know, it's critical. And something that I think is is often overlooked for us as a business, right? The thing that I will think about all the time, and that we obsess about is, you know, frankly, and it's, it's still related to the relationship, it's the user experience, you know, both on the platform, you know, on our actual technology platform, but also just the experience overall, and the experience for all the people that would be involved in in, you know, in a dispute on our on our platform, which is both, you know, the plaintiff, the defendant, the two sides who are actually in a disagreement, their lawyers, Right? So that's two more parties, and then the arbitrators and mediators themselves, you know, and their experience, you know, administering and adjudicating a case on our platform. And so it's something that we obsess over a lot in terms of, you know, both the people we hire, you know, finding the best people who are smart, bias towards action empathetic, right? So even your interactions with us are positive. And then, of course, everything, every product we design, every feature we add, every additional process we create, even every new rule or any rule change we make right to to our arbitration rules, always with that kind of end user in mind, and like what the experience is going to be. And, of course, fairness above all else. https://www.neweraadr.com/ rich.lee@neweraadr.com

Marketplaces and digital platforms can be barraged with disputes - from peer-to-peer conflicts to claims against the company - despite strong defenses and processes. And, resolving these disputes is costly, time-consuming and incredibly distracting. That's why the need to efficiently and effectively handle disputes is important for platforms that want to focus on growth and success. In this episode, New Era ADR Founder & CEO Rich Lee will talk about the alternative to traditional arbitration, litigation and in-house dispute resolution. He'll detail just how and why platforms should go digital and move all disputes to a digital resolution solution.
Annual U.S. litigation cost estimates vary wildly. Some say $250 billion, others say $430 billion. When you consider indirect costs, such as lost productivity or economic damages, some put the costs as high as $1.5 trillion. According to Statista, more than $5 billion is spent on employment litigation alone, and another $4.5 billion on commercial litigation. Litigation surrounding intellectual property, product liability, and real estate disputes, cost more than $3 billion each. Time is also a factor. As any litigator knows, resolution of a lawsuit can take three to five years on average. Some cases drag on for more than a decade.Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is increasingly attractive. Its benefits were on full display during Covid lockdowns. It's more convenient for almost everyone involved, especially in cross-country or cross-border disputes. An important and dangerous side effect of litigation expense is access to justice. Everyone will have disputes and conflicts in their lives, but not everyone can afford to go to court. More ADR is moving from mediation to arbitration partly because of the perceived finality of going to a panel. The American Arbitration Association says there were 25,000 ADR cases filed in 2020. Meanwhile, there are more than 400,000 federal suits and as many as 60 million state suits filed each year.Listen to my interview with Rich Lee, CEO and Co-Founder, New Era/ADR as we discuss hot topics and issues involving what is referred to here as "Advanced Dispute Resolution." Before New Era/ADR, Rich was general counsel of a financial technology company that he helped to build, grow, and sell. Episode 36 of the Legal Tech StartUp Focus Podcast — Interview with Rich Lee, a co-founder and CEO of New Era ADR In this episode of the Legal Tech StartUp Focus Podcast (www.legaltechstartupfocus.com/podcast), your host, Charlie Uniman, interviews Rich Lee, a co-founder and CEO of New Era ADR. On its website (www.neweraadr.com), New Era ADR says “Use smarter, more intuitive tools to get to resolution faster with some of the most experienced mediators and arbitrators in the industry. Do it all from home or anywhere in the world on our fully-digital platform. Get everything done in one place, without everyone being in one place. Don't waste your time, money, or energy on logistics or fighting, make it simple with New Era ADR.” Here are some topics that Rich and Charlie discuss: How Rich made his way from law school to co-founding New Era ADR. How Rich's experience as a GC and also as a business person at IP-related businesses (where he confronted first hand the expense and inefficiencies of litigating disputes in court) informs his vision for New Era ADR. What's New Era ADR's secret sauce when it comes to providing a software-based approach to alternative dispute resolution? (Hint: Among other things, shorter times-to-resolution, a “virtual first” approach, an emphasis on UX and the customer experience, and versatility as a platform that enables New Era ADR to handle not only disputes that involve commercially sophisticated parties, but also disputes that involve consumers and disputes that have A2J implications)? What business successes are Rich and his co-founders most proud of to date.

Online Dispute Resolution. That is the topic of discussion with New Era ADR cofounders Collin Williams and Rich Lee. New Era ADR is an online claims dispute resolution platform that provides online mediation and online arbitrations. Collin and Rich came up with the idea for New Era after they both served as General Counsel for a couple of Chicago based tech start ups. Collin was GC for online music instrument marketplace Reverb and Rich's last role was general counsel for Civis Analytics. A data science company founded by technology vets from the 2012 Obama reelection campaign. Collin and Rich are buddies and a couple of years ago they were commiserating about inefficiencies in dispute resolution they dealt with as GCs. That is when the seeds for New Era were sown. Fast forward to 2020, and the two got serious about launching an online dispute resolution company. The company teamed up with the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals and provides experienced neutrals to oversee online arbitrations and mediations. The rest, as they say, is history (or at least history in the making). Technically Legal is hosted by Chad Main, an attorney and the founder of Percipient, a tech-enabled alternative legal services provider.

In this installment of the Future Grind podcast, host Ryan O'Shea speaks with well known biohacker and transhumanist Rich Lee. Rich first came to the public eye in 2013, when he had magnets that served as headphones implanted into his ears - meaning that he could listen to music or receive data wirelessly directly to his head. Rich has also experimented with implanted armor, and is known for his work on the aptly named Lovetron9000. Recently Rich has begun using CRISPR in an effort to modify his genes to promote muscle growth. We discuss sensory substitution, the importance of safety, some potentially horrifying uses of virtual reality and image recognition, and more. This conversation does contain some adult themes - they are nothing too graphic, but we will provide another warning when we're moving on to those topics. Once again we remind you that the thoughts of the guests on this podcast do not necessarily reflect the views of Future Grind or myself. Biohacking is dangerous and things can go wrong. We strongly advise against self-surgery of any kind, and you should consult with a trained medical doctor before moving forward with any type of human augmentation.
