She was the first African-American to be crowned Miss Arkansas.The oldest of five children born to Richard and Macie Sullivan. She attended the University of Central Arkansas where she received a degree in broadcasting.Sullivan won the Miss Arkansas title in July 1980 and represented Arkansas in the Miss America 1981 pageant held later that year in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Sullivan and Doris Hayes (Washington) became the first African-American women to win preliminary talent awards in the pageant. Stevland Hardaway Morris – better known to the world as Stevie Wonder – signed his first record deal at age 11, and scored his first Billboard No. 1 by age 13. On episode 100 of the show, I'm joined by South African multi instrumentalist/producer and 'Just Jinjer' bassist - Denholm Harding.Denholm began his musical career in Cape Town at the age of 5, when he appeared on a nationally televised talent show open to all ages called ‘Follow That Star' where he made it through to the finals. By Grade 7, he joined popular kids program K-TV as the ‘K-TV Kids' Band drummer and moved up to Johannesburg to pursue his musical career. It's difficult to summarize Robert Margouleff's career in a nutshell. He's a musical innovator thanks to him and his musical partner Malcolm Cecil's invention of a sort of synthesizer they dubbed Tonto's Expanding Headband. Tonto caught the ear of Stevie Wonder, who brought the guy's onboard to engineer/produce him during that peak 70s period (Innervisions, Talking Book, etc). This lead to further jobs with other legends like Devo, Billy Preston and Richie Havens. Music might be most of the story, but not all. He's made movies, sang opera, sailed ships, sang opera, started businesses and tons more. He tells his story well in his newly published memoir, Shaping Sounds.
