Charlie Parker was punk rock before there was punk rock. His bebop was underground music: subversive, intellectual, and a major departure from popular music of the day (think: Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters, Perry Como). He was an intellectual heavyweight, nearly untouchable in his technical ability and pushing music to places no one else was daring to go. So where did Charlie Parker with Strings, his most accessible album, come from? It's not Bird going commercial, like some have claimed. Charlie Parker with Strings is an album he fought to make. He loved Bach and Stravinsky (even quoting the opening of Stravinsky's 'Firebird Suite' mid-solo in one legendary performance), and had longed to make a record where his jazz saxophone was accompanied by strings. The resulting record is music's greatest improviser at his best. Jazz pianists Peter Martin and Adam Maness listen to select tracks (like "Just Friends" and "Summertime"), breaking down the theory behind the music to understand what makes this album great. Jazz is the foundation of the most GENIUS music in recent history: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Joni Mitchell, D'Angelo. In this popular music series, You'll Hear It, Adam and Peter break down the greatest albums of all time. These seasoned jazz pianists bring their deep musical knowledge to every joyful episode to help you hear the hidden qualities that make music AMAZING. Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KJack Harlow has officially announced his fourth studio album, Monica, set for release on March 13, 2026—coinciding with his 28th birthday. This marks his longest gap between projects, nearly three years since Jackman (2023), which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200.The announcement dropped February 10, 2026, via Instagram, featuring striking cover art: a motion-blurred image of Harlow in sunglasses and a tilted brown cap, eyes closed, evoking a dreamlike, in-motion aesthetic. Vinyl pre-orders are live now, backed by Atlantic Records.Monica was written and recorded over the past year at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York City following Harlow's relocation from Louisville. The legendary venue—home to sessions for Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder, and more—hints at a fresh creative chapter and potential sonic evolution. In a March 2025 Zane Lowe interview, Harlow previewed the project, expressing intent to "transcend" past work and take longer for something distinct. Details on tracklist, features, and sound direction remain under wraps, leaving fans speculating on whether it continues Jackman's introspective vibe or pivots toward commercial anthems like his "Lovin on Me" era.Recent activity includes the 2025 single "Just Us" with Doja Cat, plus tracks like "Set You Free." Celebrity nods from Victor Cruz and Karl-Anthony Towns, plus overlapping studio moments (Lorde praised Harlow's reaction to her work), add buzz.Join me, Analytic Dreamz, on this segment of Notorious Mass Effect for a concise breakdown of the announcement, key stats, development timeline, and what this birthday-timed rollout means for Jack Harlow's career pivot.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Hello music lovers, and welcome to another edition of Why Music Matters. I'm your host, music journalist and musician Jeff Miers. Today, my guests represent a cross-generational journey through the ever-evolving world of jazz.  Alex McArthur is a singer and storyteller whose resume reads like that of a musician three times her age. A winner of multiple JazzBuffalo Vocalist of the Year awards, Alex brings a distinct soulfulness to any music she lends her voice to, whether she's singing something she wrote herself, or flexing her interpretive muscles on the works of legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, and Mavis Staples.  Alex is joined today by a man who has acted as a significant mentor in her musical journey.  Pianist George Caldwell is credited by Alex as, quote, “the first person I ever attempted to sing jazz in front of, and the person who encouraged me to explore vocal jazz and improvisation in the first place.”  In his role as Director of the Student Jazz Ensembles and Music Piano Performance Instructor at the University at Buffalo, George has employed his decades of experience as a Grammy-winning professional musician to help mold the musical imaginations of countless young artists-in-the-making.  Those decades of experience include tenures with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, tap dancer and choreographer Saivon Glover, R&B legend Ruth Brown, and right here in Buffalo, the awe-inspiring Star People, a Miles Davis Repertory Ensemble.  Currently, Alex and George are in the midst of performing Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, a recreation of Billie Holiday's final performance, with Alex inhabiting the role of Lady Day, and George acting as Musical Director.  The show, a MusicalFare production, is running at Shea's Smith Theatre in Buffalo's Theatre and Entertainment District, through February 15. (You can learn more about the production and purchase tickets through musicalfare.com.)  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Alex McArthur and George Caldwell!

He's also a bestselling author of fatherhood memoirs, cookbooks, and mystery novels and someone who's remarkably open about his family and health struggles. In this episode of “Life In Seven Songs,” Roker discusses growing up as the oldest of six kids in New York City to become one of the most well-known people on television — and why the songs he loves are fundamentally joyful. “The A-Team” (from The A-Team TV series) Stevie Wonder, “Fingertips, Pt. 2” Soupy Sales, “The Mouse” Santana, “Black Magic Woman” The Doobie Brothers, “Listen To The Music” The Spinners, “I'll Be Around” Elton John, “Philadelphia Freedom” This is also the last episode of Life in Seven Songs that we're planning to publish. Thank you so much for listening. We appreciate every single one of you. It's been a joy to work on this show.

Meet me at Edge City.  Isn't that place where worlds collide the only one where new ideas are ever generated?  Saxophonist Jim Pepper knew all about these cultural collisions. His band Free Spirits was arguably the first to combine rock and jazz elements, and his oft-covered song Witchitai-To is perhaps the only hit to feature an authentic Native American chant in the history of the Billboard pop charts (we sure can't think of another one; can you?).  Yes, this man changed the world, at least twice!   This spirit of discovery and of sharing culture is what this episode of Deep Focus is all about.  Fellow multi-reedman Jay Rodriguez knows.  You know him as a founding member of Groove Collective, but this three-time Grammy nominee has also played with everyone from Prince to Stevie Wonder, Celia Cruz to Gil Evans.  He's one of the cats.    Jay Rodriguez joins host Mitch Goldman in the studios of WKCR to explore the soul and the legacy of Jim Pepper through live, unreleased recordings from the archives.  Deep Focus this Monday (Jan 5) from 6p to 9p NYC time on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR-HD, or wkcr.org.   Or join us when it goes up on the Deep Focus podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at https://mitchgoldman.podbean.com/.  Subscribe right now to get notifications when new episodes are posted.  Just like WKCR, it's ad-free, all free, totally non-commercial.  We won't even ask for your contact info.   Learn more about Deep Focus at https://mitchgoldman.com/about-deep-focus/ or join us on Instagram @deep_focus_podcast.   Photo credit: publishing info not available.   #WKCR #DeepFocus #JimPepper #JayRodriguez #GrooveCollective #JazzRadio #JazzPodcast #JazzInterview #MitchGoldman   Deep Focus is a production of Small Media Large.

On this episode of 90's NOW, Kelly & Sharon break down the newly announced Songwriters Hall of Fame Class of 2026, featuring Kenny Loggins, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS, Alanis Morissette, legendary producer Walter Afanasieff and Taylor Swift, who becomes the second-youngest songwriter ever inducted. (The youngest remains Stevie Wonder, inducted at age 33 in 1983.) Kelly & Sharon also discuss the notable omissions from this year's list, including Sarah McLachlan, P!nk, LL Cool J, and Kelly's all-time fave Janet Jackson - and share their thoughts on who they believe deserves future recognition. The conversation then turns to the surprising legal dispute between longtime collaborators Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, whose partnership helped define hits for Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, NSYNC, Jay-Z, and their own group N.E.R.D. What led to the split and why is it so unsettling to see two music icons at odds. Plus, AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys explains why he prefers to go by Alex when he's not performing, sparking a discussion about artist personas and mental health. We also cover Harry Styles' return to music, including a new single, album and tour, with Shania Twain set to open his London shows - and reflect on Sheryl Crow previously opening for P!nk on tour. This week's listener question: Who would you like to see inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame next? Wrap things up with Kelly's Trivia and a trip back to 1990 in Sharon's 90's Rewind. Percussionist Lenny Castro has made a career out of being an ingredient that makes everything he touches better. He's been one of the most in-demand musicians of the last 50 years and was even an official member of Toto for many decades. Would classics like "Africa" and "Rosanna" be what they are without him? Doubtful. He's also the best thing about Christopher Cross's "Ride Like the Wind" and ONJ's "Physical". We also discuss a bunch of his session work with people like Stevie Wonder, Robert Palmer, and Fleetwood Mac. He's "mostly" retired now but keeps getting pulled in because he's so good and even just completed a tour with John Mayer. He's the best and we're lucky to hear from him. The Rizzuto Show crew dives into some of the weirdest conspiracy theories people believe — from the Titanic being an insurance scam to Stevie Wonder “not actually being blind,” Avril Lavigne being replaced by a clone, Mattress Firm laundering money through identical strip malls, and Jay-Z possibly being a time-traveling vampire. None of it makes sense. All of it is discussed with confidence in this Rizz Show daily podcast. Then reality gets even stranger. A man discovers his massive beer belly is actually a 77-pound tumor, setting a medical record nobody asked for. Another wakes up from surgery, suddenly fluent in Spanish thanks to a rare neurological condition that sounds fake but is terrifyingly real. The crew debates whether your brain secretly stores everything you've ever experienced — which might explain why this daily podcast exists in the first place. Things escalate when a story about a family Uno game allegedly ends in a stabbing, proving once and for all that Draw Four cards should come with a warning label. Add in celebrity chaos, pop culture commentary, Disney movie trauma, moon hotels that shouldn't exist, and a sneak peek at the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles spinoff "Lazy Entitled Millennial Monkeys" — and you've got a daily podcast episode that covers more ground than it should and answers none of the questions it raises. Oprah sits down with Carole Bayer Sager, the Grammy-, Golden Globe- and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter and painter, to discuss her legendary career. Carole shares the stories behind some of her biggest songs, including "That's What Friends Are For" and "The Prayer." One of the most prolific writers in pop history, Carole has worked with numerous legendary performers, such as Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Stevie Wonder. In her memoir, "They're Playing Our Song," Carole reflects on her spiritual journey both in and out of the recording studio, including her decadelong marriage to, and painful divorce from, composer and singer Burt Bacharach. She opens up about how her mother's harsh criticism of her weight led to lifelong emotional insecurity. Nevertheless, Carole says she found healing in her songwriting and believes that her life's purpose has always been to touch others' hearts through her work and to help them feel connected and less alone.
