This approach generated two enduring UK radio hits: “The King of Rock 'n' Roll” (their only Top Ten single) and “Cars and Girls” (a subtle critique of Bruce Springsteen's persona).Brice and I dive deep on Langley Park, offering track-by-track analysis. We explore the album's surprising global footprint, tracing its influence from Norwegian singer-songwriters to Japanese City Pop, anime scores, and video game music. She explores the history and symbolism of a bell-laden iron device used to control and torture enslaved people and describes the replica she created after studying metalworking. She also recounts the story of Harriet Jacobs, who spent seven years hidden in her grandmother's attic before escaping slavery. Rollins talks about how her poems engage in call and response with other texts, including the music of Sun Ra and Stevie Wonder and images connected to ornithology, anatomy, Afrofuturism, and the history of slavery. She reflects on who has historically been granted the title of “poet” in America and discusses the archival research behind her writing. Michel Grobon est ensuite parti faire carrière aux Etats Unis, où il a été Chef des Reagan à la Maison-Blanche durant 8 ans, chef privé de Frank Sinatra pendant 20 ans, il a ainsi cuisiné pour les plus grandes stars, Elizabeth Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson....Et en 1991 il est revenu en France pour ouvrir les restaurants de Disneyland Paris. Durant sa carrière il a ouvert pas moins de 300 restaurants dans le monde.

As we enjoyed the backyard of the bar Zeitgeist, H.P. gives us his experiences on growing up around the Mission, hopping on busses to sneak in to movie theaters, how multi-culti living in this part of the City was just a couple of decades ago, and also his current mainstays in the neighborhood. All of us round robin about some of our now favorite and missed businesses (and people) in the Mission. Musician Errol Cooney, an acclaimed guitarist, musical director, songwriter and producer, joins us on The Kelly Alexander Show this week. Errol has worked with some of the biggest names in music including Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, Andra Day, Quincy Jones and Beyoncé and is also a member of the band Legally Blynd. We hear about his love of the Swedes' countless classic songs; his interviews with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson; and how the quartet was indirectly responsible for his marriage to fellow scribe Caitlin Moran. Pete talks us through his journalistic odyssey from ill-fated pubescent fanzine Pop Scene via the longer-lasting Perturbed to Jim Arundel's mentoring of him at Melody Maker. Talk of his tenures at Time Out and The Times leads to his memory of "falling back in love with music" after years of being glutted with free records. The 60th anniversary of the release of 'Uptight' takes us into clips from Amy Linden's 1995 audio interview with the musical colossus that is Stevie Wonder – and a broad discussion of the Motown legend's creative evolution from 'Uptight' to Songs in the Key of Life. After Mark quotes from a 1963 review of the Beatles' first album Please Please Me, Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on Jaan Uhelszki's 2015 interview with the extraordinary Joanna Newsom.

Clipse was formed in 1994 by two brothers: Gene Thornton Jr, aka Malice, and his younger brother Terrence Thornton, aka Pusha T. From the beginning, they've worked with producer Pharrell Williams, originally as part of the acclaimed production duo, The Neptunes. But then, there was a 16 year gap between the third Clipse album, which came out in 2009, and their most recent album, Let God Sort Em Out, which came out in July 2025. This November, they were nominated for 5 Grammys, including Album of the Year. They were also nominated for Best Rap Song, for “The Birds Don't Sing.” It's a song that they made after the death of both of their parents in the span of just a few months.
