Welcome to the Faith First Podcast, I'm Jonathan Gouthier, a pastor here at First Church in Torrington, Connecticut. Let me start by asking if you have an issue with paying attention? I know I do sometimes and usually it's when something important is about to happen. I get distracted very easily. So, if you are like me, this is a good message for you to tune in and hear today. So, let's both listen in on the message by our Lead Pastor Steve Darr on Don't get distracted. In this episode, you'll discover:Why we are being conditioned to distractionThe forms distraction come upon usHow to deter distractions from our livesWhish distractions are good for usOur attention often runs to what's important to us. So distraction can reveal what lies within our hearts. At the deepest level, we are distracted because we are fallen people who battle with the flesh, our sinful natures. In seeking to remain focused on what is important, we can run to God's word that tells us to walk by the Spirit. We're so glad you listen in today and hope that the distractions you face will subside when you get into God's word. Hey, you've reach the Faith first Podcast. I'm Jonathan Gouthier, your host and a Pastor here at First Church in Torrington, Connecticut. In this episode we'll be listening to a message given by our Lead Pastor Steven Darr, so if we have your undivided attention, let's listen in…In this episode, you'll discover:Why distraction is an issue for each of usHow to give ourselves fully to each momentLearn how Jesus was present in every momentWhy God deserves our undivided attentionOne of the reasons why it is hard to pay attention is because it often requires us to turn away from what we're naturally conditioned to do. It's hard to keep our thoughts at bay and it requires us to have a firm commitment to stay focused. We have this same attention deficit when we come to God, our mind wanders, our thoughts take over. The antidote is the Word of God that calls us to be more attentive to what God desires for us. We hope you enjoyed this episode. These days, the call for leaders to be adaptable, agile, flexible, clear, focused, and calm could lead many to think it's not okay to feel or that you need to be a robot. We minimize our feelings and put on a brave face until we can no longer fake it, sometimes in the name of being “regulated.”When there's a trend in language or an approach to healing, it can sometimes be reductive in how it's taught, explained, or understood. Concepts drawn from Polyvagal Theory, like regulation and activation, are no exception. How some talk about regulation and dysregulation can create pressure to diminish our humanity so that we don't emote, and cause us to criticize someone if they're upset. In reality, Polyvagal Theory offers a powerful addition to your toolbox for leading yourself and others well while staying aligned with your values. When we work towards helping our nervous systems become more agile and adaptable by putting in the reps and working to understand our systems and our stories, we can offer those we love and lead a greater sense of curiosity, compassion, and connection. And we will have enough boundaries and guardrails to know when to tap out, take a break, and ask for help.Today's guest teaches and discusses these topics so that we can learn to regulate our nervous systems better and connect better with others. Deb Dana, LCSW, is a clinician, consultant, author, and international lecturer on polyvagal theory-informed work with trauma survivors and is the leading translator of this scientific work to the public and mental health professionals. She's a founding member of the Polyvagal Institute and creator of the signature Rhythm of Regulation® clinical training series.Deb's work shows us how understanding polyvagal theory applies across the board to relationships, mental health, and trauma. She delves into the intricacies of how we can all use and understand the organizing principles of polyvagal theory to change the ways we navigate our daily lives. Listen to the full episode to hear:Why regulation is not a static state but an ongoing dynamic experience How understanding the subconscious survival responses of the nervous system under stress can help us learn to regulate and repairWhy we can't discount or dismiss the messages our survival responses are trying to give usHow even micro-moments of responding to our nervous systems' needs can create changeHow building capacity to resourcing regulation increases our capacity to sit with discomfort and struggle in our lives and in the worldHow leaders can use Polyvagal Theory concepts to create connected, collaborative environments for themselves and those they leadLearn more about Deb Dana:Rhythm of RegulationLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:Stephen PorgesThe Nightingale, Kristin HannahBlue: The History of a Color, Michel PastoureauCéline Dion, Andrea Bocelli - The PrayerHalloween Baking ChampionshipHoliday Baking ChampionshipThe Great British Baking Show

Broken trust can be painful and cause you to question all your relationships with people and even your relationship with God.Whether a family member betrayed you, someone cheated on you, a leader deceived you, or a friend hurt you, it can be difficult to move forward. You may start to question if it's wise to trust that person again or if you'll be able to discern if someone else is telling you the truth. You may even start to question if you can trust God when you're afraid of what He'll allow next.In this episode, Jordan talks with author Lysa TerKeurst about what trust is made up of, what to do about broken trust, and how to move forward with ourselves, others, and God.Tune in to learn:Why we all experience trust issues with people and with GodWhat trust really is and what it requiresWhy it's tempting to replace trust with controlWhy we sometimes have more faith in our fears coming true than God coming through for usHow to process our doubts and lean into God instead of our fearsWant to dig deeper into this topic? check out these resources mentioned in the episode:IG: @lysaterkeurstLysa's book: I Want To Trust You, But I Don'tCrunchi (Use THIS LINK for $10 off your first Crunchi order)

254 – Is it really true that God already knows what you need?If that's the case, why do we need to ask God for anything? Why doesn't He just give it to us?Well, sometimes He does, but usually it's important to ask because it reminds us that God is the source of all our blessings and we are not.The question is: What do you really need?Sometimes we get what we need mixed up with what we want and we end up praying for the wrong thing.Based on what Jesus said and did, and knowing that he was giving people what they really needed, what does that tell us about what those needs were?  In this week's episode I go deep into what we really need based on what God sent Jesus to give us. We need:The Messiah, to show us the Way and be the Way of salvationTo prioritize seeking God's kingdom and His righteousnessHealing and forgivenessTo know how to prayTo know how to love our neighbors and ourselvesThe Holy SpiritThe BibleAnd everything else Jesus gave usHow does the way God meets a particular need in a Bible story apply to you? Do you see any parallels? The underlying needs of these folks thousands of years ago are pretty much what you and I need today.God knows what you need. It may not be what you want or what you think you need. But God knows what you need, what you actually need, better than anyone else.
