This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Benjamin Wittes and Eric Ciaramella to talk through the week's big national security news stories, including:“With Arms Wide Open.” After years of open skepticism toward Ukraine (and uncharacteristic deference to Russia), it seems President Trump may have turned a page. His rhetoric has grown cooler toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, and he has proven more willing to provide arms to Ukraine, even over contrary efforts by some of his advisers—including an agreement to provide Ukraine with Patriot missiles and other U.S.-made, Europe-funded weapons. What explains this switch? And how durable is it likely to prove?“Hitting Foggy Bottom.” Just days after the Supreme Court removed a preliminary injunction, the State Department went forward with substantial personnel cuts, RIFing 1,350 foreign and civil service personnel in Washington, D.C. It's all part of a much broader reorganization that State Department leadership claims will make the Department leaner or more efficient, even as it guts personnel working on issues disfavored by the Trump administration. “Waiting for the Intel Impressment.” Since the Trump administration's June 21 airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, a heated debate has raged over their effects. The administration maintains the strikes were “historically successful” and permanently set back the Iranian nuclear program. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! When June Matthews found a charming fixer-upper just north of Spokane in 2010, it felt like the dream starter home—until she stepped into the basement. A heavy silence, an icy draft, and an inexplicable sense of being watched were the only flaws she could find, and she brushed them off as an overactive imagination. Since January, Americans have had serious concerns about Elon Musk's DOGE (the “Department of Government Efficiency”) and the privacy of our personal data. The government used to have careful guardrails in place to protect our information. Only certain people, after careful background checks, were given access. But DOGE was given unprecedented access to all of our data, across departments and agencies. And because Trump fast-tracked DOGE with an executive order, employees didn't have to go through the same background checks and screenings. Many were teenagers, including the now infamous 19-year-old hacker whose online name is (sigh) “Big Balls.”Okay, but Elon is gone now. So does that mean DOGE is over? Unfortunately, no. DOGE was never an official government agency (it just hijacked the existing US Digital Service), and Elon Musk was never officially in charge of it, so even without Elon, the work continues. A former DOGE employee is now the chief of staff at the Department of Energy, for example, and two former DOGE members are now senior officials at the Environmental Protection Agency. “Big Balls” himself is now working at the Social Security Administration.Meanwhile, Peter Thiel—another billionaire and the founder of the tech company Palantir—has been working to build a massive, government-run database of Americans. The goal is a one-stop shop with all of our information, from tax returns to medical records, all in the same place. You know, exactly the thing the government has always known not to do.Privacy used to be nonpartisan. Back in the 1970s, Republican Senator Charles Percy said, “I hope that we never see the day when a bureaucrat in Washington can use his organization's computer facilities to assemble a complete dossier of all known information about an individual.” Even in the past few years, data privacy has been an issue that transcends political parties. So reach out to your representatives, no matter where you live, to let them know that you don't want billionaires to have your data. And if all of this feels too overwhelming, try getting involved in your local community. We might not be able to do much about what's happening with our information, but we can make things better for our neighbors. For a transcript of this episode, please email comms@redwine.blue. Today, Keir Starmer told the House of Commons the previous government had ‘serious questions' to answer about a major data breach from the Ministry of Defence. On Tuesday, a major data breach which led to thousands of Afghans being secretly relocated to the UK became public knowledge for the first time. Chris joins Adam to discuss the former government's account of events, as well as what could happen next. And, Adam speaks to Larisa Brown, Defence Editor at The Times, about how she broke the story. Meanwhile in the US, Donald Trump is being pushed by fellow Republicans to follow through on promises he made during the election to release records relating to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Caitriona Perry calls in from Washington to explain why Trump is facing a growing backlash from MAGA supporters, and examines how the president's rhetoric has changed. Rudy Washington, Former Deputy Mayor of New York City, calls in to discuss New York City's financial struggles, highlighting a drastic budget increase from $37 billion to $116 billion over two decades. He expresses concerns about the negative impact of losing Wall Street and the financial community on the city's economy, comparing it to Detroit's downturn. There's a glut of action from Republicans throughout Washington — from new economic messaging from the White House to a big rescissions vote in the Senate to a new crypto bill in the House. But the big topic of conversation in D.C. continues to be the DOJ's non-release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. That's frustrating President Donald Trump, who has grown accustomed to being able to change the topic du jour when it doesn't suit him, as POLITICO White House reporter Megan Messerly tells Playbook contributing author Adam Wren. It's delighting Democrats, who continue to troll the GOP over it. And it's splitting Republicans, including many prominent members of Congress who are calling on the Justice Department to release the files. Where do things head from here? Megan and Adam talk through the potential political implications.

As soon as President Trump signed his tax-cut and spending package into law on July 4, one of the ways it impacted Oregon was to immediately make all Planned Parenthood clinics ineligible to receive Medicaid reimbursement for one year. In Oregon, those reimbursements make up approximately 70% of budgets. That is, if they continued to perform abortions - even for the approximately 90 percent of health care services that are not abortion related. Planned Parenthood sued the Trump administration and got a temporary injunction - but that’s set to expire at the end of this week. In Washington state, Gov. Bob Ferguson has committed to backfilling the loss for clinics in that state for one year. We talk with Sara Kennedy, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette, which runs nine clinics in the region, about the impact of the expected Medicaid cuts and what alternatives might be available.

This week a warrant was issued for the arrest of former La Marque city manager, J.B. Pritchett. He is facing five charges, of which two are felonies. How in the hell did we get here? To an outsider, the small Texas town of La Marque seems like a chaotic, toxic mess. Many people point their fingers at a councilman by the name of Joseph Lowry who has a brash, combative, and in your face style that rubs many the wrong way. Originally from the state of Washington where he served time in prison for distribution of methamphetamines, and fancies himself a "citizen journalist." He filed a complaint with his police department about Pritchett, accusing him of lying on his application about his education and military service. In this episode, i45Now reporter T.J. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
There is a U-boat in the middle of Chicago. It's attached to the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park. Generations of Chicagolanders, and their cousins from far away, have walked through U-505, but they don't always ask how in the world it got to Chicago.A crucial moment in the journey of U-505 to its permanent berth was on June 4, 1944. On that day for the first time in the history of the US Navy since, perhaps, October 7, 1864, the command “Away all boarders!” was given on the USS Pillsbury, part of the task force that had been searching for U-505 off the northwestern coast of Africa. Their challenge was to capture an underwater boat from the surface, and then keep it from sinking. How they got to that point, and what happened afterwards, is the subject of Alexander Rose's new book Phantom Fleet: The Hunt for U-505 and World War II's Most Daring Heist. In the course of describing one of the most audacious naval actions of the Second World War, Rose also reveals the secret war against German U-Boats.Alexander Rose is the bestselling author of Washington's Spies, as well as American Rifle, Men of War, The Lion and the Fox, and Empires of the Sky. Born in the United States, he grew up in Australia, was semi-educated in England, worked in Canada, and now lives in New York. He also claims to be a committed listener to Historically Thinking. In this episode of International Horizons, RBI director John Torpey talks with Vali Nasr, Majid Khadduri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies and former dean at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, about Iran's dangerous crossroads after its latest clash with Israel and the United States. Nasr argues that Western narratives about Iran as a reckless theocracy miss the calculated grand strategy behind its actions — a strategy rooted in centuries of imperial ambition, deep-seated insecurity, and anti-American resentment. He explains why the Islamic Republic has survived despite public disillusionment and why hopes of regime change are naïve. Nasr warns that Iran's nuclear ambitions are now more entrenched than ever, as ordinary Iranians begin to see the bomb as their only shield against annihilation. With the U.S. unwilling to invade but also disinclined to negotiate in good faith, Nasr lays out the stark choice Washington faces: a nuclear Iran or another disastrous Middle East war. Nasr recently published Iran's Grand Strategy: A Political History (Princeton University Press), and is also the author of The Dispensable Nation: American Foreign Policy in Retreat (Penguin 2014), and The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam Will Shape the Future (W.W. The Republicans are investigating President Joe Biden's use of the autopen while in office. Although many presidents have used the autopen in the past, President Trump and others have expressed concerns about Biden's cognitive abilities and his awareness of the actions his administration was taking during his term. The former president defends his own use of the autopen, telling the New York Times that he always authorized its use. Marc Thiessen, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, provides insight into the ongoing investigation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed a federal ban on Chinese nationals and other foreign adversaries from purchasing American farmland. Agriculture Secretary Rollins called this a major national issue and said concerns still remain over the food processing plants and farms already acquired by the Chinese, which are situated near U.S. military bases. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen joins the Rundown to discuss security threats posed by China's economic influence and why he believes Americans should reject Chinese-made products and support domestic goods instead. Following the airstrikes, word of a possible peace deal between Israel and Syria have emerged but will it end the fighting? FOX's Eben Brown speaks with Ahmad Shawari, research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, focusing on Middle East affairs, who says the possibilities of peace could be far down the road since the Syrian revolution may not even be over just yet.

On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel digs deeper into the controversy brewing in Lewis County, WA where a decision by the Board of County Commissioners - with little or no public input to sell a historic building with a two-week bidding process - has caught many residents off guard, and upset some who care about history and historic preservation. The Claquato Church in Lewis County, Washington was built in 1858 and is one of the oldest structures in the Evergreen State. Lewis County Commissioners approved a plan on July 15, 2025 to auction it off as surplus property; the deadline for bids is July 31, 2025. Criteria for the winning bid is described as "highest and best" - as far as who can guarantee preservation of the building - but the process and the way it's described in official documents strikes some as a little unclear. In this episode, we hear public comment from the Board of Commissioners meeting of July 15, 2025 when the plan was adopted; we speak with Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock in an interview from July 16, 2025; and another interview from later the same day with descendant of the original church builder, Marla LeFevre. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade three years ago, the question of abortion's legality and availability returned to the states. As of now, abortion remains broadly legal in more than 30 states and Washington, D.C. In some, like Kansas, Missouri and Montana, abortion is still legal largely because of voters. But while Trump spent a lot of time on the campaign trail trying to avoid the topic of abortion, his new tax and spending law proves that the GOP has stayed laser focused on restricting the rights of everyday Americans. It contains a provision that prevents health care nonprofits like Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion care provider, from receiving Medicaid reimbursements for one year for ANY services – even those not related to abortion. Mary Ziegler, a professor at UC Davis School of Law who focuses on the history and politics of reproduction, healthcare and conservatism, explains how the new law could limit your ability to access health care and threaten Planned Parenthood. And in headlines: Trump announced the U.S. will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, a bunch of states sued the Trump administration for withholding money for after-school care and English language programs, and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced he'll stay in the race to be New York City's next mayor.Show Notes:Check out Mary's work – workstatecourtreport.org/about/mary-zieglerCall Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
