Here in Washington State, we are surrounded by a vast landscape of natural resources. When you are enjoying the outdoors, do you ever wonder about the state of these resources or the role that we play in their preservation? Big River: Resilience and Renewal in the Columbia Basin is a new book-in-progress and visual storytelling campaign exploring the Columbia River system and its expansive watershed, from sea to source. The project seeks to explore the river's complexities and illuminate its beauty geologically, ecologically, and culturally. It also explores the current challenges and the people and communities seeking solutions and sustainability. The book includes the work of award-winning wildlife and outdoor photographer David Moskowitz, landscape and history author Eileen Delehanty Pearkes, former Seattle Civic Poet and Washington Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna, and contributions from members of the various communities and cultures whose lives are touched by this river, such as Indigenous tribes across the watershed who have called for new management strategies to establish better outcomes now and secure the river for future generations. The future is uncertain, but Big River hopes to serve as both an educational and inspirational resource to support the ongoing efforts of conservation organizations to push for sound management of this important body of water. This event is part of a series of international book events celebrating the book launch of Big River, and is cohosted by Save Our Wild Salmon, a diverse, nationwide coalition working together to restore wild salmon and steelhead to the rivers, streams, and marine waters of the Pacific Northwest. Big River explores the Columbia River watershed as one living, interdependent entity that embraces a broad cultural and ecological perspective Photographer, author, wildlife biologist, and tracker David Moskowitz is the author of Caribou Rainforest, Wildlife of the Pacific Northwest, and Wolves in the Land of Salmon, and coauthor of Peterson's Field Guide to North American Bird Nests. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Sierra, High Country News, and Audubon Magazine, as well as by organizations such as the National Wildlife Federation, Endangered Species Coalition, and Nature Conservancy of Canada. Eileen Delehanty Pearkes explores landscape, history, and the human imagination through writing, maps, and visual notebooks, focusing on Indigenous culture and the power of water. She has researched the international Columbia River basin for more than two decades. Pearkes is the author of The Geography of Memory, A River Captured: The Columbia River and Catastrophic Change, and The Heart of a River. Claudia Castro Luna served as Washington State Poet Laureate for several years. She is the author of Cipota Under the Moon, One River, A Thousand Voices, and There's a Revolution Outside, My Love, among others. Born in El Salvador, Castro Luna arrived in the US in 1981. Living in English and Spanish, she teaches and writes in Seattle. Cindy Marchand is a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes (Sinixt/Lakes Band). She serves as secretary of the executive committee, chair of the fisheries committee and vice-chair of the natural resources committee.  She works extensively on environmental issues in the United States and Canada, serves as the Eastern Representative of the Environmental Protection Agency's Regional Tribal Operations Committee and Commissioner for the Upper Columbia United Tribes.  Buy the Book Big River: Resilience and Renewal in the Columbia Basin The Elliott Bay Book Company

Austin Reese, PE is a Senior Project Engineer with Jirsa Hedrick in Denver, CO and always up for an adventure. He has spent much of his last few years working on the One River North project, a showpiece building that is currently under construction in Denver's River North neighborhood and slated for completion in late 2023. This building will include three stories of below grade parking and 16 stories of above grade, luxury residences, with an open air, 10 story tall, canyon through the center of the building. The exterior will almost appear as if the exterior hardscapes are cracked open, revealing vast crevasses of lush greenery. There will be over 13,000 square feet of open-air environments throughout the structure, including a creek, waterfall and walking trail lined with vegetation. Biophilic design inspired by Colorado's great outdoors will be integrated throughout the building structure. The structure will be comprised of post tension concrete floor slabs and concrete vertical elements.Austin grew up in Maryland and Texas but has called Colorado home since 2017. When he is not designing adventurous structures, you can find him hiking. This past summer, he completed an almost 450 mile hike along the Colorado Trail. If you enjoy this show and want more content like this, visit gablmedia.comMentioned in this episode:Gabl Membership

We are more isolated, divided, and sick than ever before. Personally, I always turn to nature when I'm feeling lost. And in traveling, talking to interesting people, and learning about the world, I've found that ancient cultures and their relationships to nature can teach us volumes when it comes to rediscovering connection, health, and meaning. Today, I'm excited to share a conversation I had with Wade Davis, all about culture, the depth of the natural world, belief systems, ethnobotany, psychedelics, and more. Wade Davis is a writer, photographer, and filmmaker. Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society from 2000 to 2013, he is currently Professor of Anthropology and the BC Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of 23 books, including One River, The Wayfinders, and Into the Silence, and he was the winner of the 2012 Samuel Johnson prize, the top nonfiction prize in the English language. His latest book is Magdalena: River of Dreams. Wade's many film credits include Light at the Edge of the World, an eight-hour documentary series written and produced for the NGS. Fidelity Digital Assets, a subsidiary of the financial services giant Fidelity Investments, plans to double its headcount this year to meet the growing demand for crypto trading from institutional investors, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. The business is planning to add 110 employees in tech roles, including engineers and developers with blockchain experience, Fidelity Digital Assets President Tom Jessop said, according to the report. The expanded headcount will be used to build infrastructure to offer trading of ether. Fidelity Digital Assets has hitherto offered only bitcoin (BTC) support. It aims to provide faster transactions and 24-hour trading support as well as compliance and tax-reporting tools. The One River Carbon Neutral Bitcoin Trust – a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) proposed by One River Asset Management – has been rejected by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The proposal to list on the NYSE Arca exchange lacks sufficient investor protections, the SEC said, which is similar verbiage used by the agency in denying other spot bitcoin (BTC) ETFs. One River submitted paperwork for the ETF in May 2021, and the SEC in March announced a delay in its decision. This particular spot ETF application differed from others in that One River pledged to buy and dispose of carbon credits to account for the emissions associated with the bitcoin in the fund.

Amidst a fraught backdrop for macro risk, uncertainty around inflation is a new and vexing challenge for investors. And with this in mind, it was my pleasure to host a conversation with Lindsay Politi, the Head of Inflation Strategies at One River Asset Management. Through our discussion, we learn about the framework she has developed over two decades in fixed income with an emphasis on trading inflation. In Lindsay's rendering, inflation is not a single variable but needs to be understood through unique cycles and in specific geographies and economies. Fiscal and monetary factors matter in driving inflation, but so to do structural components of labor markets, like demographics, and the degree to which wage and price growth can become linked in how employees and employers think.Today's environment is unique in the impact of Covid and how it has created supply chain risks that are not easy to reverse, leaving the potential that today's elevated inflation levels will not soon recede. We next turn to the ecosystem of products that pay out specifically on realized inflation. Here, Lindsay comments that shorter-dated, income oriented products have done quite well as the realized level of CPI has far outstripped anything that was implied even a short time ago. Rounding out our excellent conversation, we explore the Fed and how it impacts market prices. Lindsay sees lots of manipulation in prices but still valuable information to be derived from metrics like the break-even inflation curve.I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my discussion with Lindsay Politi.

Here's One River's crypto pitch to multi-billion dollar pension funds and endowments

"It's really a matter of moving at the pace of the decisions of institutional players." That's Shaun Martinak, research and portfolio manager at One River Digital, the newly-launched arm of One River Asset Management that's working with clients to add crypto exposure to their portfolios.  In an interview during the latest episode of The Scoop podcast, Martinak observed that while institutional players have made headlines entering crypto, some of the largest investors--including pensions and endowments--account for only a small fraction of the crypto market. He believes that, in the future, there will be a place for such investments in the portfolios of these types of investors.  "I think between 2 and 10 percent is a perfectly good number," he said, speaking to the penetration of pension funds and endowments into crypto. "And it's a matter of the timeline for education and the timeline for decision making." He said such firms are actively seeking exposure though One River as they actively pitch for their business. "I think the pitch is multifaceted, but it really boils down to: This is an area of fundamental growth at a time where fundamental growth is difficult to find." The metaverse  While hesitant to make predictions on cryptocurrency portfolio allocation over the next 12 months, Martinak was enthusiastic about the growth and technological advancement he's seen in the gaming segment. Ultimately, he sees the possibility of gaming and NFT assets sitting alongside traditional assets in an investor's portfolio.  “When I think about the metaverse and I think about what digital assets and crypto primitives bring to existing in a space with other people in a digital environment, it just seems like it compounds how much time and attention we spend on our screens and in our information universe because your bank account is going to live in there with you, your value is going to live in there with you," he said. As Martinak posits: “What is this going to look like in its version of the Super Bowl?” Episode 73 of Season 3 of The Scoop was recorded remotely with The Block's Frank Chaparro and Shaun Martinak, Research and Portfolio Manager for Digital Assets at One River Digital. Plants, languages, and the loss of medicinal knowledge

Many Minds

Our planet is home to an astonishing diversity of plants—close to 400,000 species. Over the millennia, indigenous communities around the world have been studying those plants, experimenting with them, using them as a sort of free-growing pharmacy. Certain species, prepared in certain ways, might be used for digestive ailments; others for the skin, teeth, or liver. But this vast trove of medicinal knowledge is now under threat. Under two threats, really—we're losing plant species and we're losing indigenous languages and cultures. My guests this week are Dr. Rodrigo Camara-Leret and Dr. Jordi Bascompte, both of the University of Zurich's Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies. Rodrigo is a Senior Researcher there, and Jordi is a Full Professor. We discuss their remarkable recent paper titled 'Language extinction triggers the loss of unique medicinal knowledge', published this past summer in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). In the paper, Rodrigo and Jordi analyzed data from three hotspots of biocultural diversity—New Guinea, the Northwest Amazon, and North America. They were trying to better understand the nature of indigenous medicinal knowledge, the threats it is facing, and how we might best protect it. This is one of those papers that immediately grabbed me. It's deeply, unclassifiably interdisciplinary; it takes on an urgent question with a clever approach; and it tells us something we genuinely didn't already know. As I already said, our global stores of ethnobotanical knowledge are under threat—and from different directions. What Jordi & Rodrigo's work shows is that, in order to protect that knowledge, we need to focus on protecting indigenous languages. Before we get to it, just wanted to mention that, as it happens, Jordi was just very recently awarded the prestigious Ramon Margalef prize for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of ecology. So it was an extra special honor to have him on this episode. Alright friends—on to my conversation with Dr. Rodrigo Cámara-Leret and Dr. Jordi Bascompte. Enjoy!   The paper we discuss is available here. A transcript of this episode will be available soon!   Notes and links 4:45 – The Bascompte lab focuses on the architecture of biodiversity. 9:30 – Dr. Cámara-Leret and Dr. Bascompte have previously worked together on indigenous knowledge networks. 12:00 – The concept of “ecosystem services” is central in ecology. 16:30 – Dr. Cámara-Leret has previously worked on plant biodiversity in New Guinea, as well as on ethnobotany in Northwestern South America.   25:30 – A 2000 paper estimated that only about 6% of the world's plant species have been screen for biological activity. 36:20 – Dr. Bascompte very recently won the 2021 Margalef Award for his contributions to ecology. End-of-show recommendations: Dr. Bascompte recommends Perspectives in Ecological Theory, by Ramon Margalef. Dr. Cámara-Leret recommends Where the Gods Reign, by Richard Evans Schultes, and One River, by Wade Davis.   You can find Dr. Cámara-Leret on Twitter (@R_CamaraLeret) and follow his research at his website. In this article, I discuss allegations that a case of bioterrorism lay behind the introduction of a fungus that kills cacao trees, which appeared in Brazil's northeast. I strongly dislike conspiracy theories. At the same time, sometimes there are real conspiracies. In this case, we don't have enough evidence to judge whether the allegations are true, even though one person confessed. So was this a horrible political crime? A conspiracy narrative concocted for political reasons? One thing is certain- the fungus was introduced into northeastern Brazil. One correction: in the podcast I said that the fungus was introduced into the heart of plantations, but I know realize that I probably misunderstood, and that the outbreak first appeared along a river and a road. My guest today is Wade Davis, an author and anthropologist, who was until recently Explorer in Residence for the National Geographic Society and is currently Professor of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Some of his books include "The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World,” "One River," about which Sting wrote in his review “Read this book”, and most recently "Magdalena" which was described by the President of Colombia as essential reading for every adult Colombian. Wade Davis is probably the most well known anthropologist in the world today. His work has received a huge boost recently from an article he wrote in The Rolling Stone Magazine about the decline of America brought on by the COVID-19 crisis, and we talk about the ongoing work he's planning with The Rolling Stone going forward. As well as being a great writer, this interview illustrates just how compelling a storyteller Wade Davis is. What is Covered - What tools anthropologists can bring to the world leaders in order to re-establish geopolitical stability and deal with the climate crisis - Redefining the notion of wealth in contemporary society by finding inspiration in the reciprocal relationship to nature of indigenous communities - Why Colombia is one of the hotspots of cultural and natural diversity, as well as resilience in a globalised world Key Learnings and Takeaways - The key thing to step back from is cultural myopia, and the idea that my world is the real world and everybody else is a failed attempt to be me; we can't afford that anymore in an interconnected world. - In a society like the Penan culture, where material accumulation has no meaning, and where everybody can essentially make everything from the raw resources of the forest, wealth is defined explicitly as a strength of social relations between people. - Colombia is not a place of drugs and violence; it's a land with the greatest biodiversity, geographical diversity and cultural diversity in the Americas. In a recent interview, veteran journalist Carl Bernstein said that the political sides in this country are moving toward a kind of cold. civil war. But this week's first guest, veteran blogger and political operative Peter Daou, says that we're already in a civil war, and it's not cold. He cites the killing of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, the violence of white nationalist groups, the Trump supporter who mailed explosive devices to prominent Democrats and CNN, and the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting as examples. One of the key fronts in this war is social media, which is the subject of Daou's new book, “Digital Civil War: Confronting the Far Right Menace.” We're joined next by Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna. She's recently been named an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow, an honor that confers a $100,000 grant, money she's using to fund a new project called One River, A Thousand Names, which will convene a series of workshops and readings along the Columbia River. We also have our weekly calls to action with research team leader Stephen Wilhelm. This title was released digitally only in December 2016, and on CD in January 2016. It will be exclusively available to buy from the BF website until March 31st 2017, and on general sale after this date. Time travelling archaeologist and adventurer River Song returns - and this time she will be stepping into the past life of the Doctor, encountering two of his incarnations at once! From the space exploration vessel Saturnius – which is heading to a destination that never gets any closer - to a doomed planet Earth and beyond, River's journey will bring her closer to a new foe… and an encounter with both the Sixth and Seventh Doctors. 2.1 The Unknown by Guy Adams A planetary anomaly. A scientific impossibility. A mystery to be solved. Of course, River Song expects to be consulted. She expects her valuable knowledge and experience will help the crew of the Saturnius unlock the strange phenomenon that has appeared in Earth's solar system. But what River doesn't expect is a stowaway. An infuriating little man, calling himself the Doctor. 2.2 Five Twenty-Nine by John Dorney River has made a terrible discovery. Billions of lives hang in the balance. But if she can save just a few, then it might just help her solve the conundrum of Earth's destruction. But how can she win when survival becomes a race against time itself? A race against Five Twenty-Nine? 2.3 World Enough and Time by James Goss When it comes to bringing down corrupt and exploitative regimes, there is no-one quite like River. Until she arrives at Golden Futures and discovers that someone else has already taken on her job. Someone with almost as much style and panache as herself. The Doctor is about to get the shock of his lives. 2.4 The Eye of the Storm by Matt Fitton The Great Storm of 1703 approaches. The fate of planet Earth hangs in the balance. The only person who can save it is the Doctor. Or River Song. Or quite possibly another Doctor. Or maybe this whole situation is their fault in the first place. Two Doctors. One River. About a year ago I did a mix of my favorite ambient artists of all time.  I have been meaning to do a mix of my favorite ambient albums of all time ever since.  And now here it is. I did not go back and look at my favorite artist list.  I sorted through my ambient collection and came up with my fav albums.  Then I compared the two lists and not surprisingly they are almost identical.  Basically I substituted Scott Solter for Alio Die when I made the fav album list.  At least I didn't repeat any tunes from one mix to the next. Choosing a favorite album from some of these artists was difficult.  Steve Roach has some many recordings that it was tough to know where to start but I kept coming back to the one that gets the most play and that is "The Dream Circle."  I wonder how many other folks like this album as much as I do.  I'm not e really sure why I like it more than his other releases, it definitely sounds similar to a lot of his other output.  I guess over the years it's become like a comfy sweatshirt. Stars of the Lid & Eno were both hard to choose a favorite as well.  With SOTL I ended up going with the album that I first discovered them with.  In choosing "On Land" from Eno I really could have just flipped a coin to choose between it and "Music for Airports," "Apollo" and "Music for Films."   The one favorite that probably doesn't make a lot of lists is "One River" by Scott Solter.  Using mostly processed guitars this album ebbs & flows beautifully from one tracks to the next.  I was happy to see that it's available on Bandcamp, although it's one long track instead of separate tracks like the original.  You can find it HERE.   Enjoy. There is a new release from Loscil called "Sketches from New Brighton." And of course it's excellent, everything from Loscil is excellent.  As I listened to it I figured that Loscil would have to be one of my favorite ambient artists of all time. That got me thinking...what are my top ten ambient artists of all time?  The artists on the list are ones I come back to again and again.  And also ones that have a decent sized body of work.  Scott Solter did one of my favorite ambient albums of all time, "One River." But that was pretty much it from him.  So to make the list it was important to have a fair number of releases. Well, here's the list, in no particular order: Stars of the Lid Brian Eno Steve Roach Loscil Harold Budd Maps & Diagrams Alio Die Sonmi451 William Basinski Kyle Bobby Dunn This mix is a collection of tracks from each of those artists.  The cuts used in the mix are not necessarily my favorite track from that artist, just tunes that worked well within the mix.  I did want to use something new from Loscil but something old from Eno & Harold Budd. Honorable mentions might be: Marconi Union Robert Rich Taylor Deupree Saul Stokes Gas Hammock Aglaia Marsen Jules Spheruleus Windy & Carl David Tagg A Produce 36 If any listeners would like to leave their lists in the comments that would be very cool.
