When it comes to firms that design for multifamily, there are two sides to marketing. First, the company must create its own brand and promotional material. Then it assists in marketing for the client that it serves. In this month's episode of Multi-Housing News's Top Marketers podcast, Chief Visionary Officer & Founder of Loft Six Four, Brandon Reed, joins MHN Senior Associate Editor Jordana Rothberg to talk about just that. Loft Six Four assists architects and developers in creating rooftop and outdoor living experiences and amenity spaces. Started in 2013, the company uses landscape, urban and rooftop design to customize multifamily, hotel and resort projects. Reed has been in the project management and design space for real estate for more than 20 years. In this episode of The Best Ever CRE Show, Slocomb Reed interviews Brandon Reed, founder and chief visionary officer of Loft Six Four, a boutique firm specializing in rooftop amenities for large apartment complexes. Brandon shares insights from his landscape architecture background and how his firm has evolved to focus on creating immersive outdoor experiences that drive property value. Despite the current narrative of development slowdown, Brandon reveals they handle 30-50 projects annually, though this represents a 50% drop from peak levels. He notes that development continues in markets like Dallas and Utah, primarily driven by well-capitalized developers with deep pockets or family offices who can weather high interest rates. Brandon explains that properly designed amenities can generate an additional 10-20 cents per square foot per month in rent and help maintain high occupancy rates. The conversation explores trends in amenity design, with a focus on creating hospitality-like experiences that foster community and justify premium rents. Brandon emphasizes that while individual amenities like pools and fire pits are important, the key is creating cohesive outdoor living spaces that become talking points and drive resident retention. In a spontaneous episode I discussed five different aspects of the business of podcasting – from using AI to “audio or video?”, to leveraging the star power and engagement power of podcasting. You'll hear from: Michael Kaye, Director of Brand & Communications for OkCupid, an online dating app; Brandon Reed, Host, formerly tired dad, and creator of 12 Hour Sound Machines, a viral podcast that helps people sleep; Bona Rai, COO and Co-founder of Capsho, the tool that helped E.B. use AI to generate these very show notes (!); Chris Whitman, Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of GlassBox Media, think 'music label-meets-podcast marketing machine';  A.J. Feliciano, Head of The Roost Podcast Network from Warner Bros Discovery, that started the groundswell of podcasts leveraging video and has his finger on the pulse of monetizing best practices to meet the consumer where they're consuming content.  It's five inspiring chats that reveal the brilliant possibilities of audio and video for the future including: How OkCupid leverages podcasting for success - earned or owned? The business model behind the 12 Hour Sound Machines podcast What Capsho is, and how this new tool taps AI to help podcasters save time How GlassBox Media cracks the code on growing podcast awareness and ups the value of creator IP A spontaneous interview at the Sounds Profitable event in Austin When is a podcast a video and a video a podcast? How should brands embrace the consumer's content journey? The Roost tells all. Chapter Summaries/Time Codes: [00:00:01] This is episode 5 of Insider Interviews, with five different guests included. Each of my guests spoke about a different area of the business of podcasting. This was recorded spontaneously right after a panel I conducted during SXSW for Sounds Profitable, featuring one of the panelists and four members of the audio .... [00:01:42] Michael Kaye, director of communications at OkCupid is naturally inclined towards earned, but says: "We've seen tremendous impact from both podcast advertising and from earned, pitching our experts to appear on other shows. In 2023, we'll be looking again at podcast advertising." [00:03:57] Brandon Reed's podcast is called 12-Hour Sound Machines. It was created when his newborn couldn't sleep through the night, now enjoying about 300,000 downloads a day. Reed started by first directly selling to brands, but now he's on Megaphone, in the Spotify Audience Network so programmatic sales is a really good solution for him. Hear his explanation of why the moments before falling asleep are actually a powerful moment for advertisers.... [00:09:12] Bona Rai is a co-founder of Capsho, a product that uses AI to tap audio files to create SEO-optimized content for podcasts. At just 10 months old they're already embracing a more robust version of Capsho 2.0 coming this Spring. [Note: I tried out Capsho 1.0 for most of these show notes, with an added “human touch!”] [00:14:15] Chris Whitman describes GlassBox Media like a record label for podcast hosts. Its goal is to grow the value of the IP for the creators across any sort of opportunity from a revenue perspective. "Now we represent around 65 shows, with no end in sight.” [00:18:58] A.J. Feliciano explains that The Roost podcast network is a video-first podcast network. “We have about 90 shows, a third of them are owned and operated. What is it about multiplatform distribution on podcasts that makes it so worthwhile for other podcasters?” [00:21:18] Our thinking around YouTube is that it's less that it's about video, and more about the platform itself. Who's your target audience and where have they been conditioned to go to just consume content? And that's why we're seeing podcast-like content bringing such big numbers there. [00:23:54] The Roost podcast will always have a foundation in audio. It can have video, it can be on YouTube. Heck,

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2022 10:12

This week on The Download: Podcast profits on the rise in the UK, white noise podcasts prove profitable, and the first Sounds Profitable Business Leader's Summit is headed to Podcast Movement. As is true of many episodes of The Download, we start with an article published on Tuesday. Bron Maher of the Press Gazette published “The Economist considers audio paywall as podcasts reach 3 million people a month.” The lede is somewhat buried, as the interesting information lies not in the framework of The Economist’s future plans to paywall podcasts, but in just how much traffic those free podcasts bring in. Prior to the launch of the publication’s flagship podcast The Intelligence, The Economist had seven full-time employees dedicated to podcasting. As of 2022 that number has ballooned to thirty of the paper’s nearly 320 staff. Quoting the article: “The Intelligence gets approximately 350,000 downloads an episode. In a month, Prideaux said the podcast can now reach as many as two million listeners. During peak coverage of the invasion of Ukraine, the figure hit two and a half million. Across its entire podcast stable, The Economist is now being listened to by more than three million people a month. That compares against 1.2 million print subscribers – while its digital circulation in the second half of 2021 was 995,228, according to its ABC report.” John Prideaux, director of podcasts for The Economist, notes that the podcasting wing’s success brings an unexpected level of familiarity with one’s audience. The Economist’s longstanding policy on not publishing bylines does not extend to their shows, allowing parasocial relationships to blossom where they wouldn’t in articles of identical information without an author attached. Maher quotes Prideaux: “I mean, it’s a bit of a surprise – some of our people, who are on the podcast, they suddenly get not exactly recognised, but internet famous in a way that is new for a place with no bylines. And some of them find that a bit alarming.” Regardless of whether the publication paywalls previously free content, nearly two decades of embracing podcasting has lead The Economist to a point where a fraction of its staff bring in more impressions via podcast audience than the actual published paper. Jacob Kastrenakes, writing for Hot Pod Insider, covered several iHeartMedia higher-ups appearing at Tuesday’s J.P. Morgan Global Tech, Media, and Communications Conference. The main takeaway of the talk? iHeart believes there’s a finite window in which one can determine if a podcast can be made successful purely through promotion. “First off, a show has to be good, according to Bob Pittman, iHeart’s CEO and chairman. ‘We can’t make something that’s not a hit a hit,’ he said. From there, it comes down to marketing. ‘What we can generally find is probably in two or three weeks, we can see if we've got a hit or not with heavy promotion.’” Though, unlike radio, a lack of success during launch window doesn’t spell death for the product. Kastrenakes quotes Pittman as saying podcasts have “unlimited shelf space.” Without a limited amount of bandwidth on which to program, iHeart is able to take risks on relatively cheaper production costs and - even if it doesn’t take off in the 2 to 3 week launch period - allow the product to exist on its own in hopes outside forces lead to a free resurgence in popularity. Once again we circle back to the global story of podcasting doing well everywhere, not just in the North American markets. Quite well, in fact, according to Aisha Majid’s article on the latest Digital Publishers’ Revenue Index for the Press Gazette. “Among the sample of 12 publishers included in the report, which was produced by the Association of Online Publishers (AOP) and Deloitte, audio revenue hit £4.2m in the first quarter of this year. This was six times what they made in the first quarter of 2021.” Deloitte’s Dan Ison claims daily podcast listening has caught up to online radio in the UK, growing to the point one in ten adults under 25 pay for at least one form of premium podcast subscription. AOP managing director Richard Reeves, as quoted by Majid, said: “We’ve seen revenue for digital audio grow steadily over the last few quarters, driven in part by what’s being deemed the ‘golden age of podcasts’. The 500% revenue growth reported for this channel in Q1 2022 demonstrates that publishers are now successfully monetising this type of content.” This next bit of news is home-grown as it comes direct from Sounds Profitable founder—and former host of The Download—Bryan Barletta. In partnership with Podcast Movement, the first Sounds Profitable Business Leaders Summit will take place August 23rd in Dallas, Texas. “On its own, a one-day business-focused event would be a hard sell to just about anyone, even in NYC or LA. But as an industry, we absolutely need one. A day dedicated to the real tough conversations that the industry needs to have in order for us to drive the progress that leads to a $4bn US podcast advertising industry and then some. So, for an event like this to thrive, it would need to be attached to the undisputed leading podcast industry event in America.” The summit is slated to kick off with the Sounds Profitable quarterly research report. “Measurement, video, and programmatic are words we hear in conversation every single day. Sometimes positively, occasionally from a negative perspective, and most often from a place of curiosity. So we’ve gathered the best and brightest to make sure we’re all on the same page, as each of these three topics continue to grow in popularity and importance.” While the quarterly report will be available publicly, the rest of the Summit - keeping in line with a key goal of fostering candid conversations on where to take the future of podcasting - will only be accessible to members of companies that sponsor Sounds Profitable. For our last full story of the week we turn to Ashley Carman’s Bloomberg piece from Wednesday: Spotify Podcasters Are Making $18,000 a Month With Nothing But White Noise. Carman’s brief journey into the world of white noise podcasting reveals a surprisingly healthy field of competing products all fundamentally designed to serve up calming soundscapes to put audiences to sleep, all while running occasional ads to their slumbering subscribers. Quoting Carman: “Those who did respond to interview requests say they are making good money, winning over fans and marveling at the power of podcast distribution. Collectively, the shows represent a burgeoning and lucrative podcast genre.” Take, for instance, the story of Brandon Reed: a man whose podcasting career started by using Anchor more as a file hosting platform for white noise to soothe his own son rather than intending on distributing the files globally. Three years later things are extremely different. Quoting Carman again: “His inadvertent hit has also made the charts on Apple Inc.’s Podcasts app and has reached over 26.6 million total listens, he said. Reed now offers a $2.99 monthly subscription, which gives paying customers access to additional sounds and the ability to request new ones. When a chiropractor needed railroad clacking for an anxious patient, Reed went out and captured it. So far, he’s made over $10,000 through subscriptions.” At the risk of reigniting years-old social media arguments as to what it means for a piece of media to qualify as a podcast, these snippets from the world of calming noise serve as a reminder that restrictive views of podcasts both in format and content can leave niches unserved. And finally, befitting of a short episode we only have one article for our semi-recurring segment spotlighting articles worth reading that didn’t quite make it into the episode. This week The Download recommends The Podcast in Quebec in 2021 by Bruno Guglielminetti. Fair warning, the post is in French, but it contains statistics relevant to The Download’s ongoing coverage of podcasting’s growth in global markets. Time to dust off that vocab textbook from college. The Download is a production of Sounds Profitable. Today's episode was hosted by Shreya Sharma and Manuela Bedoya, and the script was written by Gavin Gaddis. This week on The Download: Podcast profits on the rise in the UK, white noise podcasts prove profitable, and the first Sounds Profitable Business Leader's Summit is headed to Podcast Movement. As is true of many episodes of The Download, we start with an article published on Tuesday. Bron Maher of the Press Gazette published “The Economist considers audio paywall as podcasts reach 3 million people a month.”  The lede is somewhat buried, as the interesting information lies not in the framework of The Economist's future plans to paywall podcasts, but in just how much traffic those free podcasts bring in. Prior to the launch of the publication's flagship podcast The Intelligence, The Economist had seven full-time employees dedicated to podcasting. As of 2022 that number has ballooned to thirty of the paper's nearly 320 staff. That compares against 1.2 million print subscribers – while its digital circulation in the second half of 2021 was 995,228, according to its ABC report.” John Prideaux, director of podcasts for The Economist, notes that the podcasting wing's success brings an unexpected level of familiarity with one's audience. The Economist's longstanding policy on not publishing bylines does not extend to their shows, allowing parasocial relationships to blossom where they wouldn't in articles of identical information without an author attached. Maher quotes Prideaux: “I mean, it's a bit of a surprise – some of our people, who are on the podcast, they suddenly get not exactly recognised, but internet famous in a way that is new for a place with no bylines. And some of them find that a bit alarming.” Regardless of whether the publication paywalls previously free content, nearly two decades of embracing podcasting has lead The Economist to a point where a fraction of its staff bring in more impressions via podcast audience than the actual published paper.  Jacob Kastrenakes, writing for Hot Pod Insider, covered several iHeartMedia higher-ups appearing at Tuesday's J.P. Morgan Global Tech, Media, and Communications Conference. The main takeaway of the talk? iHeart believes there's a finite window in which one can determine if a podcast can be made successful purely through promotion. “First off, a show has to be good, according to Bob Pittman, iHeart's CEO and chairman. ‘We can't make something that's not a hit a hit,' he said. From there, it comes down to marketing. ‘What we can generally find is probably in two or three weeks, we can see if we've got a hit or not with heavy promotion.'” Though, unlike radio, a lack of success during launch window doesn't spell death for the product. Kastrenakes quotes Pittman as saying podcasts have “unlimited shelf space.” Without a limited amount of bandwidth on which to program, iHeart is able to take risks on relatively cheaper production costs and - even if it doesn't take off in the 2 to 3 week launch period - allow the product to exist on its own in hopes outside forces lead to a free resurgence in popularity.  Once again we circle back to the global story of podcasting doing well everywhere, not just in the North American markets. Quite well, in fact, according to Aisha Majid's article on the latest Digital Publishers' Revenue Index for the Press Gazette.  “Among the sample of 12 publishers included in the report, which was produced by the Association of Online Publishers (AOP) and Deloitte, audio revenue hit £4.2m in the first quarter of this year. This was six times what they made in the first quarter of 2021.” Deloitte's Dan Ison claims daily podcast listening has caught up to online radio in the UK, growing to the point one in ten adults under 25 pay for at least one form of premium podcast subscription.  AOP managing director Richard Reeves, as quoted by Majid, said:  “We've seen revenue for digital audio grow steadily over the last few quarters, driven in part by what's being deemed the ‘golden age of podcasts'. So we've gathered the best and brightest to make sure we're all on the same page, as each of these three topics continue to grow in popularity and importance.” While the quarterly report will be available publicly, the rest of the Summit - keeping in line with a key goal of fostering candid conversations on where to take the future of podcasting - will only be accessible to members of companies that sponsor Sounds Profitable.  For our last full story of the week we turn to Ashley Carman's Bloomberg piece from Wednesday: Spotify Podcasters Are Making $18,000 a Month With Nothing But White Noise.  Carman's brief journey into the world of white noise podcasting reveals a surprisingly healthy field of competing products all fundamentally designed to serve up calming soundscapes to put audiences to sleep, all while running occasional ads to their slumbering subscribers. Quoting Carman again: “His inadvertent hit has also made the charts on Apple Inc.'s Podcasts app and has reached over 26.6 million total listens, he said. Reed now offers a $2.99 monthly subscription, which gives paying customers access to additional sounds and the ability to request new ones. When a chiropractor needed railroad clacking for an anxious patient, Reed went out and captured it. So far, he's made over $10,000 through subscriptions.” At the risk of reigniting years-old social media arguments as to what it means for a piece of media to qualify as a podcast, these snippets from the world of calming noise serve as a reminder that restrictive views of podcasts both in format and content can leave niches unserved.  And finally, befitting of a short episode we only have one article for our semi-recurring segment spotlighting articles worth reading that didn't quite make it into the episode. This week The Download recommends The Podcast in Quebec in 2021 by Bruno Guglielminetti.  Fair warning, the post is in French, but it contains statistics relevant to The Download's ongoing coverage of podcasting's growth in global markets. Time to dust off that vocab textbook from college.  The Download is a production of Sounds Profitable. Today's episode was hosted by Shreya Sharma and Manuela Bedoya, and the script was written by Gavin Gaddis. OVERVIEWAs a pool technician and business owner in Southern California, Brandon Reed spends day in and day out at your neighbors' swimming pool. But he's not just lounging around, nor does he deserve to be referred to as simply “the pool guy”. Brandon has become a master in all things pool-related - from building, installing remodeling, maintaining, and repairing pool equipment. This fascinating profession requires a jack-of-all-trades, borrowing skills from electricians, plumbers, construction, and more to serve America's favorite and often overlooked home luxury. Listen in as Jeremy sits down with Brandon to learn the ins and outs of owning a business in the pool industry, building and repairing pools, how he found his career, and much more. ABOUT BRANDONShortly after graduating high school, Brandon started working for his father's HVAC company for much of his early adulthood. However, during the housing market crash in the late-2000's, business began to dwindle significantly as crucial accounts sought ways to cut costs. With a career change already in mind, he met a family friend one day, who was making ends meet in the pool business. One thing led to another and Brandon found himself cleaning pools, and eventually building them from scratch. “So I talked to that guy for a little bit and next thing I knew I was working for him, you know, low wages, I wasn't making anything but to me, which is fun, learning a new trade. And then from there, it just went from hanging out with that guy for a little bit then all of a sudden, that same guy, his name was Robert we started building pools together.” Over the years, Brandon has become a master of all things pool-related. Applying elements from several trades, he often finds himself doing plumbing, HVAC, construction, and electrician work all at once. He is on the job 365-days a year as a pool technician and business owner based in the sunny state of California. Compared to HVAC work, Brandon has found that being a self-employed pool technician is a significantly higher maintenance trade. “When I install a five ton condenser unit I'm not seeing that customer again for another five or 10 years. With a pool I'm seeing my customers every four to six months because there's constantly always something breaking and there's always something going on” Working through the pandemic, Brandon has also experienced an unprecedented boom in the pool industry due to families quarantining and dumping money into their at-home environment. “Yeah, the pandemic happened. And I'm going okay, I'm gonna have to go back in the air conditioner or something because you know, in my opinion, people are gonna be smart, we're gonna save money because they don't know what's going to happen. And the exact thing opposite happened. People stayed home, they didn't know what to do with their kids, so everybody wanted a pool now.” Transitioning as a worker in his father's company to a business owner himself, Brandon has gained context over the years for being self-employed. Having now experienced both sides of the same coin, he can now understand many of the struggles his father went through. “I could see a lot of things that he had to go through now that I'm on the other end of the stick as well… it's not as easy and the grass isn't always greener. On the other side, it's a lot of stress. Owning any type of business, in any industry by yourself, man, you feel like you got to constantly be working, because you don't know if there's going to be more work.” From working in HVAC as a young adult, to learning a completely new trade and making a business out of it, Brandon has brought himself to the forefront of the pool industry through a mix of trial-and-error, experience, and hard work.

Time to get back in the ring, to take another swing. The walls were shaking, the earth was quaking, my mind was aching - you know what, I saw AC/DC live back in 2016, you don’t need to relive that show, although it was super awesome. I’d previous had tickets to see them in high school, in September of 1996. That tour got canceled before it got to Hampton. So there I was, 20 years later, with my pregnant wife on Valentine’s Day rocking out to AC/DC. What’s that have to do with wrestling? Nothing really, other than AC/DC is a favorite on wrestling playlists worldwide. I’m Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more in and around the sport of wrestling. By the way, if you notice the episode numbers changing, that’s because I did an audit of the amount of Short Time episodes in the feed. The most recent show where I interviewed some folks in Little Rock was actually the 580th episode. At some point, I didn’t count things and had some other non-Short Time shows in the feed. That’s been fixed and sure enough, this is the 581st edition of Short Time, whether it be in the Shots form or my more formal feature story/interview format. I also went to the Richard Nixon School of Accounting. Most of you won’t get that joke. Minnesota Beer of the Night: Bite Size by Modist Brewing. It’s classified as a Pastry Stout, with some evil chattering teeth on the can. It checks in at 6.7% and it’s pretty good for the first major snowfall expected to hit the land of New Brighton by the time you listen to it. Remember, I’m on Untappd at jasonbryant12. By the way, the Modist taproom is about a mile and a half from U.S. Bank Stadium. Dual Meets:  It was a close one down south in Division II where a fall from Jonathan Miller at 141 pounds was the difference as No. 21 UNC Pembroke edged No. 17 Limestone 20-19 in Pembroke on Tuesday. All-American Nick Daggett also scored a key bonus victory for the Braves at 125 pounds. Lindsey Wilson, ranked third in the NAIA, won nine out of 10 bouts and scored six falls as the Blue Raiders trounced Division II Bellarmine 47-3 in Columbia. Returning national champion Brandon Reed picked up his fall at 1:10 at heavyweight. Grand View, the top-ranked team in the NAIA, ran its dual meet win streak to 80 in a row after blanking Benedictine (Kansas) 50-0. During that stretch, Grand View has outscored opponents by an average score of 42.3 to 4.95. There’s also been 27 shutouts. The Vikings have won 108 of their last 109 duals with the last loss coming in November of 2013 to Division I Iowa State. Keeping it in the NAIA, fifth-ranked Campbellsville won a pair of duals at home on Tuesday. First the Tigers topped the Phoenix of Cumberland University (Tenn.) 34-6 before dispatching with West Virginia Tech 59-0, yes, one away from a perfect score. Cumberland beat West Virginia Tech 48-6. Marian beat Missouri Baptist 43-6. In Division III, fifth-ranked Augsburg was aided by five forfeits in shutting out St. Olaf 57-0 at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis. Guess what, the office of St. Olaf College President David “The Duck” Anderson has ignored two more requests for interviews after feeding the Board of Regents and alumni a load of scat, no matter which animal it originates. Notables on the Docket: There’s nothing on the schedule until after Thanksgiving, with action firing up on Saturday with Northern Colorado at Fresno State. On Sunday, we see several notables, including Cornell heading to Ohio State, Wisconsin going to Carver-Hawkeye, Appalachian State facing North Carolina, Augustana (S.D.) facing North Dakota State, and Ohio facing Chattanooga. FROM THE DWN: There’s a new No. 1 in the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll as Iowa moves into the top spot for the first time since February of 2015. Penn State, the previous No. 1 for the last 36 polls, fell to No. 3 after the Nittany Lions saw their 60 match win streak stopped by Arizona State. The Sun Devils slid up six spots to No. 4, one spot behind the team they just beat. Hey, sports. Other notables saw Nebraska move to No. 2, tying its best rank in school history, Princeton moved to No. 12, its highest ever and Army West Point moved to No. 21, its highest ranking since 1994. Kurt Cobain was still alive the last time the Black Knights were this high. With two top-five victories in a matter of hours, NC State redshirt freshman Trent Hidlay was named ACC Wrestler of the Week. Meanwhile, David Carr’s win over Kaleb Young earned him Big 12 WOW honors. I’m not sure if “WOW” is said as such, other than in SID headlines, but ok. Trent Hillger, aka THOR, hammered down (dad jokes) the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after pinning Utah Valley’s Tate Orndorff in overtime. Speaking of the Big 12, tickets for the Big 12 Championships in Tulsa at the BOK Center - that’s the Bank of Oklahoma and not the vegetable popular in some Asian foods - are on sale. TheMat.com tells us the 24 wrestlers who will head to Sweden to compete at the Haparanda Cup this coming weekend. The list is highlighted by world teamers Max Nowry, Ryan Mango, Raymond Bunker, and John Stefanowicz. How’s the Turkey in Sweden, boys? Up in New York,WKBW reports the doctor related to the school system that initially denied the request of a 12-year-old seventh grader to compete on the JV wrestling team saw his association with said system end late last week. Through a statement, Michael Terranova has replied to the situation, however, while citing standards, that reportedly weren’t applied uniformly, the statement made no mention of his hand-written note that said “girls don’t play boys sports in Lancaster schools.” Yo man, double standards. It should be noted that New York does allow seventh and eighth graders to compete in varsity wrestling. Trista Blasz’s story has gained national attention. More on the girls wrestling front sees MontanaSports.com reporting that the Montana High School Association will submit a proposal to add girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport. That vote will come in January. Right now, 18 states sanction or will sanction girls wrestling in the 2020-21 school year. Notably absent - Pennsylvania. Internationally, The Times of India notes world medalist Vinesh Phoghat and Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik are notables set to compete at the Indian national championships. The news of a possible Russian ban at the upcoming Olympic competitions has officials in the Russian Federation annoyed, to say the least. Russian wrestling federation head Mikhail Mamiashvili spoke out against the potential ban in international news services, citing instances in the past where athletes were punished unjustly for “the sins of the father.” Ok then. In keeping it international, the President of Iran’s National Olympic Committee responded to United World Wrestling’s postponement of the Greco-Roman World Cup. UWW issued a statement on Sunday saying the postponement was in response to current instability in Iran. Tuesday, the Mehr News Agency noted Reza Salehi said UWW’s decision was “hasty, sensational and under the influence of incorrect propaganda by western states against Iran.” Cody Goodwin of the Des Moines Register opens up the wrestling mailbag in the wake of the Iowa-Iowa State dual which drew over 11,000 fans to Hilton Coliseum. Sad news came in late Monday as it was learned the Brian Keck, a former NJCAA national champion and longtime wrestler on the senior level, had died. The details around the situation are still slim, but Keck was one of a kind. If you didn’t know him, he looked mean and intimidating. If you wrestled him, you’d probably understand that to be somewhat true. Brian was a jovial, big-hearted guy with a very unique past and one where wrestling played a big role in changing the course of what he’d do with his life. He dabbled in professional wrestling, coached MMA fighters, ran youth tournaments and was just generally someone who liked to do right by people. Personally, Keck had been a friend since probably 2005. We’d roomed together in Fargo, I announced tournaments for him, most recently at the Preseason Nationals last month. A funny guy who was labeled “No Neck Keck,” he was one of those people that had a story - and everyone who knew him - had a story that involved him in some way, shape or form. Last month in Des Moines, he bought a bunch of tickets to the Carrie Underwood concert next door from the venue where the Preseason Nationals were held - at the Wells Fargo Arena. He wasn’t comped those tickets - he bought them

The last time we spoke to John Bower on this podcast, we talked about the hard grind that is a career in music. Those careers often include full-time side jobs, bad gigs, math-challenged club owners, sketchy promoters, and more. Now, John is seeing the culmination of all that hard work. In fact, you could say he's "livin the good life". The Good Life is a new tune by Bower and songwriting partner George Domiano, with some bars from Brandon Reed, also well-known in local circles for his solo music, and his work recording and encouraging other artists. The song, included on this podcast, has everything a hit needs. It has a great hook, good vocals, expert recording, and a tasty rap section. Johnny called it "country hip hop", but he did so facetiously, and because Brandon was not in the room.   We can all use a little positivity these days, and Bower and friends deliver that with "Good Life". It's the beginning of a good new phase for the artist, and for us, as well.
