20 years ago, Starbreeze Studios was going through some tough times, and they were looking for one of their games to be the hit they needed. Across the water, Hollywood actor Vin Diesel was looking to get into video games with his new company called Tigon Studios. So, they decided to come together, and they launched a stealth-FPS in 2004. We're talking The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at the developer's really rocky path to their first Riddick game, and discuss whether the general public would be excited about seeing Normal Mapping on the box. We also mention late 90s / early 00s rapper Xzibit and his thoughts on Pac-Man.In our review, you'll hear some chat on how this game is as dark as Splinter Cell and Thief, but not as deep; the oddity that is Eyeshine; our feelings towards the trade off of a sleek and minimal HUD vs ambiguity when it comes to the safe zone of an enemy's vision cone; Adam's preview of Assault on Dark Athena; being a Batman-like predator; trigger happy guards that are standing behind a door waiting for you; some of us think the shooting isn't very good, some of us think the shooting is good, but all of us quite liked it for some reason; The Darkness; a more involved melee system; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; side quest-giving NPCs; where the prison guards live and shop; a little story about a horrible place; NanoMED treats you right; Richard B. Riddick is a nasty piece of work; and an outrageously sexy menu cube. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Murdered: Soul Suspect on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris jump back into the world of Richard B. Riddick for both the 20th anniversary of The Chronicles of Riddick and the debut of The Boys season 4, which stars Riddick co-star Karl Urban.Set five years after Pitch Black, infamous convict Riddick (Vin Diesel) has been hiding out from mercenaries but gets drawn into a larger universal conflict and on the bad side of the Necromongers, a powerful race that is sweeping across the galaxy, conquering and destroying every planet in their path. Riddick also learns that he is a Furyan, an ancient warrior race that was the only one who could stand against the Necromongers. Zach and Chris discuss if Riddick's "eyeshine" is really a tactical advantage, how the sequence on Crematoria could have been the entire movie, the massive expansion to the universe of Riddick, the dodgy early aughts CG effects, and more. You can watch The Chronicles of Riddick on Hulu or Peacock. Next week, we're getting shrunk with Honey, I Shrunk the Kids to celebrate its 35th anniversary. We want to hear your comments and feedback. Send them all to contact@everythingaction.com. 25 years ago, a PlayStation-exclusive was released that required a new peripheral called the DualShock It had not one, not three, but TWO ANALOG STICKS. So, this one definitely made an impact at the time. We're going back to 1999 to look at a 3D platformer chock full of puzzles and monkeys to collect. We're talking Ape Escape. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at how Japan Studio had to communicate how players would use their new controller, and some big TV ad campaigns that ran in the States. We also take a look at some Japanese adverts that we would've welcomed on out television screens back in the day.In our review, you'll hear some chat on a giant satellite dish called a Monkey Radar that tells you where the escaped apes are (as well as how quick, powerful, and perceptive they are); an enemy's trousers tell you a lot; the Metal Gear Solid similarities in the game's visual language; going into the foetal position and being “nearly invisible”; catching a monkey sneakily vs them seeing you and jumping into a spaceship; the joy one can derive from catching a misbehaving time traveller; swinging gadgets around via the right analog stick; swimming in a 3D space with your Water Net; whacking those cheeky little guys over the head with Stun Club more than you need to; a Hoop, a Sky Flyer and an RC Car for puzzle-solving; the art of rowing a boat; phenomenal level design; trashing sandcastles; a big dinosaur; Specter doesn't want to go back to Monkey Park; two different English-voice casts with two different scripts; a much more fun Watch Dogs profiler; an AI construct called Casi; Spike's Shinobi Deathblow; and a soundtrack that doesn't fit but definitely fits. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Ape Escape is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

From 2004 to 2006, the gaming industry underwent significant changes, marked by both highs and lows. In 2004, Electronic Arts (EA) redefined industry success with its strategic NFL license acquisition and aggressive expansion, despite criticisms of their game quality. Meanwhile, iconic studios like Argonaut Games folded, whereas others, such as Insomniac Games, persevered. 2005 witnessed a surge in handheld gaming, counterbalanced by a wider industry stagnation. Controversies, like the "Hot Coffee" mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, stirred debates, while the Xbox 360's launch ushered in a new console era amidst its own challenges. By 2006, the Xbox 360 grappled with criticisms, Blizzard's policies in World of Warcraft sparked debates, but Sony's financial rebound and major industry acquisitions hinted at a consolidating and optimistic future.Featured Games:Half-Life 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Katamari Damacy, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Halo 2, Resident Evil 4, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, The Guitar Hero Guitar, F.E.A.R., World of Warcraft, LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, Shamu's Deep Sea Adventures, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Wii Sports, Gears of War, Ōkami, Company of Heroes, Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!, New Super Mario Bros., and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 7 (00:06) - 2004 (19:04) - 2005 (36:55) - 2006 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

[School of Movies 2022] This one is really rather special and arguably the longest time coming of any of our shows. Pitch Black, released in February 2000 in the USA didn't make it to the UK until November of that year. There's even some confusion in this episode because I wasn't sure if Sharon and I were actually together as a couple when we saw it (turns out we were, just). But significantly, this was our first movie where we left the cinema together on fire with analysis that we were twanging back and forth like verbal badminton. It's a tight, focused, visceral, planet-survival thriller, drawing from many inspirations but managing to combine them in a way that keeps it continuously gripping, even after all these years. This is the first of a dedicated three-week series of episodes revolving around the transmedia franchise that sprang from this standalone movie; a handful of very savvy decisions mixed with a bucket of bad ones.  The chronological order goes... 1. Escape from Butcher Bay (Patreon Exclusive Episode) 2. Assault on Dark Athena (In a double-bill with Butcher Bay) 3. Pitch Black (Main Event) 4. Dark Fury (Patreon with the video games) 5. The Chronicles of Riddick (Main Event) 6. Riddick (Patreon) See you in a few days for a delve into Vin Diesel's career and the Peter-Chung-animated 30-minute short, followed by the sprawling, pretentious Conan-the-Barbarian-in-Space of "The Chronicles of Riddick" next week.

The Chronicles of Riddick, when it first released in 2004, was the definition of mediocre sci-fi schlock.  Riddick, played by Vin Diesel, came across as a generic edgelord, and it seemed to lean into special effects and spectacle over anything more substantial.  It's a direction that didn't play well with critics, nor with the fans of the previous entry, Pitch Black. So it was to everyone's surprise when a videogame set in this same world was released to widespread critical acclaim.  Vin Diesel, under his macho exterior, was secretly a bit of a geek, and was heavily involved in the development.  Critics praised just about every aspect of this short and tightly-made prison-escape, from the visuals, to the stealth, to the characterisation. But were those critics simply wowed by the glossiness of a cinematic FPS?  Are the individual gameplay mechanics in Riddick actually fun in their own right?  Or is this just another mid-2000's hybrid FPS game that is better off forgotten? On this episode, we discuss:Structure. To this day, Escape from Butcher Bay's non-conventional structure continues to impress modern audiences. Did it impress us? Stealth, shooting and investigation. Individually, these are sub-par. So what's Riddick's secret that brings these together into something special. Characterisation. Is Vin Diesel's beloved character simply a generic action hero, or is there more to him than meets the eye? As a prequel, does Butcher Bay limit Riddick's potential for development? Or does it set up Pitch Black's captivating final moments. We answer all these questions and more on the 97th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherRiddick OST: Gustaf Grefburg—Is it worth watching the third Riddick movie, or is it just more of the same?  Are there any other obvious influences we forgot to mention outside of repeatedly calling out Half Life?  Is Dark Athena as bad as the reviews suggest?  Come let us know what you think on our community discord server!

Trans-media beings exist in a digital realm, transcending the archaic definitions of one art or another. Words become images, images become environments, narrative forms change shape in a strange alchemy of noble intent and desperate capitalism. The Mappers navigate this technoplane, where all things change and the nature of creation is itself in flux, and they find themselves gripped tight to their seats. How many Gs exist in cyberspace? Will the Mappers survive, or are they doomed to hurl their lunches at the very thought of all things being subverted into newer, bigger, more engaging? Would someone think of the adults? Actually we do, all the time. We just haven’t discussed it until our special guest Nathan gave Justin, Cole, and Ethan an excuse to talk about managing your game time as adult and family responsibilities increase. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow Growing up a gamer may seem easier than being a grown up gamer. That doesn’t you should give up, and we’re here to help. Before it gets too heavy, we should officially introduce you to Nathan – The Prophecy – who has vanished from the site in recent weeks thanks to the birth of his twins. We welcome him back with our Threesomes of the Week where Cole is confused that Inception didn’t confuse him at all. The On the Spot Question asks – what is your greatest gaming marathon session? You can almost hear Nathan tearing up recalling memories of Final Fantasy VII. Those marathons may be behind us, but there is still plenty of gaming left ahead in our adult lives. We take a look at how game time has changed from our bachelor days on through marriage and having children. Along the way we highlight games that your significant others can enjoy, and a few that may have them worried about your stability. Hopefully we saved each other and you from a potential real life fight due to video games. Of course, who says we know what we are talking about? After all, we are the types of people that can spend from now until the game comes out debating the Mass Effect 3 trailer. After a week off, Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Christina make quite a mess when they open up their horror game memories. Unrecognizable bits of Alan Wake, Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness, Dead Space, and more, stain an otherwise horrible episode. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow Maybe we held onto Halloween just a little too long. Sure after a while it was awkward, but we think the holiday supports a good horror video game discussion no matter the day. It’s good to be back on The Horrible Show and we celebrate by derailing almost immediately during our Threesomes of the Week. You can blame it on Justin’s demon forehead or drinking habits. Our On the Spot question asks, “What horror movie should be made into a game?” so naturally we talk about Titanic and Ethan’s man crush on Billy Zane. Truly horrifying. Then, it is time to (un)settle in for our horror game discussion about the highs and lows in the genre. From Resident Evil to Dead Space, Bioshock to System Shock, Metal Gear to Silent Hill, and Wonderland to Arkham Asylum, we find a reason to be scared of something in just about any type of game. In HorribleNight.com news, Ethan creates a new editorial series that just may save the industry. It couldn’t come at a better time because if our industry shout-outs are right, gaming is about to be taken over by dancing douchebags. You’ve got to get out of here.
