We start off talking about preservation of television video from the late 90's and 2000's - and why it looks a lot worse today than we remember when it first aired. PEGI has reclassified Balatro and Luck Be A Landlord down to a PEGI-12 rating from a PEGI-18, which was given because it had elements of gambling. PEGI's statement described how it was modifying its rating rules to account for "fantastical elements" in games like Balatro. EA has released the source code for many of their Command & Conquer titles, which are fun to go through and will help the modding community greatly, but won't really teach you how to make a game in 2025. Warner Bros is closing Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego, and cancelling their projects, including a Wonder Woman game. Monolith Productions had patented the "Nemesis" system from Shadow of Mordor, and now Warner Bros holds on to the patent until 2036, while most likely not using it in any more games - but will stop other games from incorporating the same mechanic. Then we talk about how March is gonna have a lot of great game releases.
EA releases the recovered source code for Command & Conquer and C&C Red Alert under GPL! LACT now supports dynamically reattaching GPUs, the Steam Deck turns 3, TF2 Classic is headed to Steam, Framework announces a desktop PC, and there's new content for Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition.
We have Kernel resignations, A GPL court case of some importance, and Mozilla's potentially broken promise. Curl maintainers have thoughts, Some gaming classics have gone open source, COSMIC has another Alpha, and ROCm probably isn't ready for the 9070. For tips we have Chronic out of MoreUtils, pipewire's pw-loopback for audio looping fun, wall for sending terminal messages, and usbip for spooky USB actions at a distance. Today, we're diving into Command & Conquer: Renegade, the 2002 spinoff that took the beloved real-time strategy franchise into the first-person shooter genre. We start by exploring the origins of Command & Conquer at Westwood Studios and how the team sought to expand the universe beyond its RTS roots. Then, we'll examine how Renegade blended fast-paced combat with strategic elements, bringing the Tiberium War to life from a soldier's perspective. Finally, we'll reflect on the game's legacy, from its cult following to the fan-made Renegade X project that keeps the experience alive today. So, grab your weapons and join us on the battlefield for today's trip down Memory Card Lane! Find out more at https://a-trip-down-memory-card-lane.pinecast.co

Tom and Brian discuss their time playing the Command and Conquer series, while also looking back on FMV and ridiculous Tim Curry quotes.
At the suggestion of a listener Jake and Jason struggle their way through what was an attempt at finding the worst RTS game possible. Honestly the listener outdid themselves because this game is rotten through and through. From its poorly acted and bizarre plot, all the way to the slow and grindy gameplay the game is a real disaster. This week Ad and Tom are talking about Command and Conquer. The game that threw RTS into the mainstream and popularised the genre for many in the 90's. Certainly one of our favourite memories and a great look back at this seminal game.
This week, we're deploying COMMAND AND CONQUER into perhaps hostile territory, as the RTS classic attempts to take ground on the Nintendo 64. We look back at the history of the once-prolific series, including a deep dive into the dearly departed Westwood Studios, and see if C&C can break the console RTS curse. Also, we're both very tired and overhot this episode, so it gets a little slappy. The boys are back with a look into an alternate history. C&C Red Alert 3 is a story about a world war that never was. When the Soviet Union is on the verge of defeat, a colonel played by Tim Curry uses a secret time machine to go back and murder the source of the Allies's super tech: Albert Einstein. When he returns, he finds the Soviets are now winning, but a new threat has been born from his temporal tampering. The global war is now worse than ever in this final entry in the Red Alert series. Red Alert 2 proposes a question that every military nut wants answered: What would happen if the Soviet Union invaded the United States of America? Except the Soviet Union has mind control technology and trained giant killer squids, while the United States relies on Albert Einstein to develop weapons of mass destruction for them. Does Red Alert 2 represent the apex of the genre, or is it just another boring base builder? In today’s episode, we ask ourselves:Is Red Alert 2’s dual pronged story a cinematic masterpiece or just a bunch of terrible scenes stitched together? Can an RTS with very simple mechanics still be as enjoyable as one with a million upgrades and options? How much frustration do James and Patrick have to endure before we remember that alt-tabbing crashes the game 100% of the time?Find out the answers to these questions, and many more on episode 5 of Retro Spectives!
