We're getting serious this week again just because it felt like the right time to finally make this episode. It's been one I've wanted to do for a couple years but ironically held back because I was afraid--everyone automatically assumes this topic is only about the pandemic, and while it definitely factors into today's topic, it's not the main focus.   Fear in general is a beast that holds us back from being our full, true selves. Did you know that only about one-third of businesses will survive a decade or longer?  The good news: there are a few tactics any entrepreneur can use to grow their company, take their revenue to the next level, and ensure their business survives.  The bad news? Fear—and analysis paralysis—holds many company leaders back from doing so. In this episode, 40 Strategy founder and CEO Carl J. Cox outlines the three ways that entrepreneurs can move past that fear and scale their company, no matter the outside circumstances.  Tune in for more on those three strategies, the power of elimination when setting goals, how to plan and execute strategic “sprints,” and the specific ROI you should be aiming for when you begin a new strategic initiative.  Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn:  The percentage of businesses that fail in the first year, first 5 years, and first 10 years of existence The 3 ways an entrepreneur can shift past fear and take their business to the next level Why focusing on fewer ideas — not more — actually creates more momentum  The power of a 10-week strategic plan, and why this timeline works so well for business owners looking to grow and scale The component that could be the most important to include in a strategic plan (which most entrepreneurs and business owners miss) A crucial leadership lesson from the book “Good to Great”, and how it can help you hold your team accountable when it comes to executing your strategic plan The ROI numbers you should be shooting for when thinking about key strategies Why “starting” (and planning) is the most important part of the CAPTAIN strategy How to increase your “luck” as a successful business Resources Mentioned in This Episode:  “The 4 Disciplines of Execution: Achieving Your Wildly Important Goals” by Chris McChesney “The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 Months” by Brian P. I love visiting them and helping out and wanted to do something to honor their dedication, patience, and hard work. My Great Grandfather has since passed but the farm is still one of my favorite places and an important reminder that working hard to help others is important. Do Work That Matters is my way of honoring people that work hard to benefit the lives of others. The heroes next door, Farmers, Military, Firefighters, Police, EMS and on. Show the hero in your life that you honor their work with a Do Work That Matters shirt or hat. I will give a minimum of 10% of profits back to the heroes next door all over the Nation. What if you could end price negotiations and stop clients from haggling, once and for all? According to marketer Seth Godin, one simple (but not easy) change that can make all the difference is to stop trying to sell to everyone, and instead to get specific about WHO you serve.  And that means doing something that fills most business owners with fear: Saying NO to customers who are not your target market.  In this interview with Suzi Dafnis and Seth Godin, you’ll learn how to position your business to the right audience and gain the confidence to say:  "I made something of value for a select few people, and it's worth what it costs." Listen to our favourite marketer in conversation with Suzi Dafnis to hear: What it means to really SEE our ideal clients Why all we need to be successful is the smallest VIABLE market What stops us from being REMARKABLE MARKETERs and business owners Why SPECIFICITY BEATS GENERALITIES when it comes to your niche How to get into the heads of those that we want to MAKE AN IMPACT on The important DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRAND MARKETING AND DIRECT MARKETING and why we should be doing both Why discounting OUR PRICE tells our market we are scared The role of FREE CONTENT VS PAID CONTENT in our bigger plan You can DO WORK THAT MATTERS for people who care

[Ep 196] Last time, I asked: Where do you want to be in a year? You may have read that and set a big, hairy, audacious goal—a BHAG. Or maybe you called it a “stretch goal.” You want to aim high and not settle for mediocre. You're excited! You're an optimist. “In a year, I'm going to be at the top of my game, more successful than I've ever been.” Big, Fast Success If you want it bad and can handle a focused, year-long push, you may nail it. If you have big resources to support big goals, this stretch-goal approach may be the way you level up fast. In a year (or less!) you may be the one saying: “I built a substantial author platform in six months and landed my book contract in eight. I'm on track to launch next year!” “I'm making a full-time income through my website now that I've quadrupled my blog traffic.” “I'm the keynote speaker at two major conferences thanks to my podcast taking off after just a few months.” Falling Short of Goals But if your time, money, energy, skills, experience, and support are limited, you might not achieve a big, hairy, audacious goal—even if you want it bad. And falling short of your goal can be demotivating. You may end up saying: “I set out to gain 100,000 subscribers on my email list in three months, but I only have a thousand.” “My plan to submit an essay each month fell way short.” “No, I didn't finish writing my novel in three months.” The macro plan sets us on a course toward a goal. We see the target. We take aim. The good news is that even if we fall short, we may be further along than if we had no goal at all. The bad news is that we may end up so discouraged and disheartened at what seems like lack of progress or failure, we give up. If we're setting an aggressive goal that is too much of a stretch, we may need to re-examine it before we form the plan to get there. Halve a Goal After Jon Acuff wrote a book called Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average and Do Work That Matters, he realized people may not need as much help getting started—after all, the beginning of projects and resolutions is the fun part. It's the middle and the end of projects where we sag and feel stuck and give up. Acuff wanted people to see their goals through to the end, so he wrote a follow-up book called Finish: Give Yourself the Gift Of Done. For Finish, Acuff commissioned a study with the University of Memphis that concluded “small goals, when you cut your goal in half, are 63% more successful than big crazy BHAGs.”1 So if you set out with a BHAG last week, consider chopping your goal in half. You can adjust the time and give yourself twice the time to complete it: instead of a two-month deadline, extend to four; if you think editing a draft will take 30 minutes, allow an hour. You can adjust the task: instead of committing to 2000 words a day, drop to a thousand; instead of six Instagram posts per week, try three. You can adjust the number of goals: if you're trying to raise visibility and name recognition by speaking, posting on social media, starting a YouTube channel, writing guest posts, appearing on podcasts, and pitching articles to mainstream magazines, drop half of those activities and focus energy and attention on a few. Research to Plan Find out what your writing world is like. What do people expect in that world? What are the successful people doing? Do you want or need to follow a similar path? What do you need to do first to move in that same direction? What level are you at and what's the next level? Could you connect with people in groups and meetups or at conferences and retreats? Could you find a mentor or coach? Could you partner with someone to collaborate? Make lists. Make decisions. Make your plan based on your goal. Enact, Evaluate, and Adjust the Plan While your plan may be aggressive and you're prepared for a aggressive burst of activity to level up fast, play the long game.

Definitely that wasn't the case previously. Throughout much of my twenties, I was the type of person who would respond with an involuntary reaction rather than with voluntary reason. That manifested itself in relationships with girlfriends and family. I would be more inclined to snap rather than to have a conversation. Nowadays, mindfulness is like a muscle, the more you train it the more it becomes second nature. Now if something negative happens, I take it as an opportunity to get better. I will say, great, this happened, let's respond in a positive way and let's find a solution. That's been huge for me because it's so easy to go through life in a reactive state. Thoughts on Breathing Oh yes, breathing. Yesterday I was hosting a podcast, and even though I am 311 episodes in, I always get a little bit of anxiety before a podcast episode. So before this particular episode, I went for a twenty minute walk and then I just sat in a quiet meeting room at our office and I just breathed for five minutes, deep breathing, focusing on the breath. That just brought me right back down. Miller Browning came up with the motto Do Work That Matters when he was 11; inspired by the hard work he saw his Great Grandfather Miller and Great Uncle Eddie put into their farm. He loved visiting them and helping out and wanted to do something to honor their dedication, patience, and hard work. Do Work That Matters is his way of honoring people that work hard to benefit the lives of others - The heroes next door such as, Farmers, Military, Firefighters, Police, and EMS to name a few. I’ve had a crazy whirlwind week this week with my book, Employee to Entrepreneur: How to Earn Your Freedom and Do Work That Matters, finally dropping, having done book launched events in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, an additional 12 podcast interviews and shortly, I’ll be catching a flight to San Francisco for the US leg of my book tour. You can find those episodes wherever you get your podcasts and in the show notes to this episode. However you can still order your copy online and find it at your local bookstore - and if they haven’t got it in stock, ask them to order it in. Of course, there are many ways you can support the launch, all of which are outlined over at employeetoentrepreneur.io/support Now for today’s episode, which is a recording of a fireside chat with my good friend and colleague, Shay Namdarian, as well as an audience Q&A, at the Melbourne leg of the Employee to Entrepreneur book launch. ---  Show Notes: Support the Book Launch www.employeetoentrepreneur.io/support  Podcast Appearances Startup Stories: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=99ff1a93f1&e=366f85aef3 Becoming Superhuman: https://becomingasuperhuman.com/making-the-transition-to-becoming-an-entrepreneur-steve-glaveski/  No Ego: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=6b44cde947&e=366f85aef3 Corporate Escapees: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=d104a11604&e=366f85aef3 The Power of Bold: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=0cdfadf9e8&e=366f85aef3 Grit & Hustle: https://gritandhustle.co/steve-glaveski/  The Hustle & Flowchart Podcast: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=915fcb425e&e=366f85aef3

Small Biz Life
Episode 82 – Breaking out of your burnout

Hi my name is Jeff, and I spent years burned out. If I was ever going to start a self-help group. It would start off saying that statement. About a couple of years ago, I started breaking out of nearly permanent burnout. My work was suffering, my relationships were suffering, and I was just not happy. I question my ability to be a proper husband. Maybe, I was a total failure.  I believed it was only a matter of time before every else knew the level of failure that I had achieved. I even spent several long afternoons with a therapist trying to figure out why I felt guilty not getting killed in a war. The therapy helped some. I knew part of why I felt so guilty. However, I did not break out of my funk. I was stuck. I was burned out, and to defend my therapist, I never asked for help with burnout. I just wanted to get past my survivor’s guilt.   Then I finally recognized that was burned out. My wife, Kristin shared with me Jon Acuff’s book call “Start”. I read it, I loved it.  It woke me up. It made me question myself. I realized that I had hopes and dreams. I had buried them so far, I was started to cripple myself. I knew that I had to change, I needed to start sharing.  I jumped on my first love, fantasy fiction. I wrote my first novel and then I got stuck again. Thank Jon, Things started to change. I made some changes. I would get a great burst of energy and knock out work, however I would end up getting frustrated and burning out. The burnout was no longer sticking. It would set in, I would lose a weekend or a week.  However, I would pick up the pieces and keep moving. I launched my fist podcast, the Worldbuilder’s Anvil. I started sharing.  I would pick up momentum, however I would still get frustrated and burn out and lose all of the momenta that I build up.   Finally, I had my aha moment I was in San Diego, I had escaped the cold days of early march in 2017.  I went to the Brendon Burchard's High Performance Academy Live. You heard me, I was in one of the best places in the world for weather and I spent 10 hours a day inside a conference room.   I had given in when he talked about the idea of high performance versus peak performance. My skeptical mind said, give this all a chance.  I knew what I had to keep changing.  I liked the way I was moving, I wanted more.  And thankfully, he backs up many of his ideas with the science and research to keep my cynical side at bay.   If you are not familiar with Brendon, I would suggest reading “The Charge”. I had been trapped in the caged life, I broke myself out and moved in the comfortable life.  Comfort might work for lots of people.  However, when I was at HPA 2017 I was introduced to a friend I had not seen in years, I understood why even comfort lead to my burnout.   I stood in front of my old friend and waved into the mirror I am a scout, explorer, podcaster, and author. I have a burning desire to entertain, educate, and empower people.  I cannot do that if I am living a comfortable life.  So, I invite you to join Kristin and I as we look at our stages of breaking through burnout. Escaping the burn out cycle does not have to take you years like it did for me. Once I understood that the root cause of my burnout was grief. I wasted so much time grieving. DO NOT DO THIS. Understand your burn out and break through it and start living a life that you love.   And yes, they are based on the stages of grief.  Because, I realized that I was trapped in grief. I was grieving for my dreams never achieved.   However, we learned that it is crazy to grief for yourself. If you breathe, you can and should increment changes to get you moving towards your dreams, do it now before you regret it.   Here are our 4 stages of the burnout cycle and the 3 steps you need to take to escape it now: 4 stages of burnout! Today we are joined by a very special guest, Jon Nastor. Jon is the author of Hack the Entrepreneur: How to Stop Procrastinating, Build a Business, and Do Work That Matters. He is also the host of Hack the Entrepreneur on Copyblogger's Rainmaker.FM podcast network, and co-founder of VelocityPage. What I love about his story is Jon didn't start out online. He opened a few of his own offline businesses after finding his entrepreneurial edge at a young age. In 2011, he made the jump online and has since interviewed over 207 entrepreneurs on his podcast - hack the Entrepreneur. Jon has compiled all of the shared traits and strategies that he's learned from so many successful entrepreneurs into a book, released in early December last year. I've asked him to join us today to share some of the knowledge he's collected about growing a business and being successful. Enjoy! --- Mission Statement: My mission is to create 200 new multi-millionaire business owners who solve world problems with entrepreneurship. How? You'll do better when you know better. Would it help you to have a mentor who can cut your learning curve by sharing their mistakes with you so you could avoid them? Would it help you to talk to that mentor and learn how they shifted their mindset to allow success to happen in the first place? Would it help you to hear them talk to other high-level entrepreneurs about their journeys, their mistakes and how they overcame their challenges to create the lives and financial success they desire? The Best Business Podcast was created for you to have all this in one place. If you like it, please subscribe, give an honest review and share with a friend you think will benefit so I may serve you both together.   "Your success is my success." -- Daryl Urbanski
