I think this is the 4th time I've played this on the Deadpod, and the first since 2017. Consider it a watermark of the times, I know its noone's favorite tune.  Next Bobby delivers a powerful 'Estimated Prophet' which flows into a fine 'He's Gone'. Drums and a fairly long Space, standard for the times, follows. 'The Wheel' flows out of 'Space' with plenty of keyboards and an ensemble singing lead. 'I Need a Miracle' showcases Weir's energy and leads into a fine version of 'So Many Roads' one of their finest latter songs. The first set, short as was the norm during this period of the band's existence, opens with a fine 'Help>Slip>Frank'. The boys sound energetic and Jerry plays some fine licks here, especially during the 'Slipknot'. A long bluesy 'The Same Thing' follows then  a sweet 'Jack-A-Roe'. Phil delivers a great 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues' and Bobby closes the set with a strong 'Let It Grow'  We'll have the second set next week.    Grateful Dead Hampton Coliseum Hampton, VA 3/5/1992 - Thursday One     Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; The Same Thing ; Jack-A-Roe ; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues ; Let It Grow   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031723.mp3  Hope you have a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day!  thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod

DISCLAIMER: I know that today is the first Sunday of Advent. However, this sermon was preached two weeks ago, and never posted due to my travels and graduation. There will be Advent/Christmas posts in the coming weeks. INTRODUCTION: Many people have said that the book of Philippians is all about suffering. I've thought that, too, seeing a pattern of his declarations to rejoice even in the midst of trials. However, as I have continued to study it each week, I have realized that this is only an extension of what Paul had in mind. Paul's letter to the Philippians isn't only about rejoicing in suffering. It is about living. It is about living like a true Christian. MAIN IDEA: This life is not the end for us. Yet while we have it, we must live it for Christ. In Philippians 3:17-4:1 Paul contrasts two different groups of people: the Citizens of Heaven and the Enemies of the Cross of Christ. He does this in order to show the dangers of hell and our hope of resurrection and eternal glory in Christ Jesus our Lord. Tori returns to her beloved alma mater, Hampton University, reflects and has a very special homecoming with the singular President Dr. William R. Harvey. Known for more than 40 years of legendary leadership, he transformed the university from a small Black college to a world-class leader within higher education. Whether it's his powerful presence, establishing the largest free-standing proton beam cancer center in the world, increasing the endowment from $29 million to over $400 million dollars, erecting 29 new buildings and the initiation of 92 new academic degrees… or simply his passion and unwavering commitment behind it all, he is a highly respected titan among men. Tori delights in her "Hampton Experience" and love for the prestigious HBCU. In the center of the Hampton University Museum, the oldest African American museum in the nation, they discuss the power of dreaming, what makes Hampton University singular, the importance of character, what he's most proud of, the key to being unshakeable under pressure, his wish for the future of Hampton University, and so much more! In episode 9, we get to meet Mike Jernigan, who owns Peninsula Hydroponics along with his wife, April. They are based in Hampton Virginia, which is on the coast. Virginia recently went from 0 to 60 with their cannabis laws. Residents over 21 are able to grow 4 plants on their property and commercial dispensaries are not allowed initially. This will give smaller growers a chance to dip their toes into the production side of things before the big money jumps in. Mike is very knowledgeable about many crops besides cannabis, and is a great resource for his customers, teaching classes in store, and sharing grow tips with those who will listen. Lastly, we touch on his experience as a victim of the "war on drugs," and how it has impacted his life. A bit of a longer episode, but when the good conversations are rolling, it's hard to find a stopping point!

Steve James needs no introduction. In my opinion, the most prolific sports documentarian of all time. He took his vision from the Cabrini Greens playground in Chicago to what became Hoop Dreams, the most successful sports doc of all time, the film that paved the way for the proliferation of Sports Films on HBO Sports, 30 for 30, and Netflix. James has since gone on to produce and direct a variety of films from Prefontaine to America to Me, an award winning docuseries on the education system in Chicago , but in this conversation we deep dive into the  Legendary Hoop Dreams…. Steve James' hoop dreams started on the courts of Hampton Va where he had his first experience with basketball and race.  From there he studied at James Madison University before his heart led him to follow his future wife to Southern Illinois.  Steve shares the films that inspired him when he first started and tells us how stories from his father helped pushed him to return home to make a film about a basketball icon who had gotten into some trouble in a bowling alley.  It is our pleasure to have Steve James on this episode of beyond the lens presented by Diesel Films.

Tonight we concluded Hypothesis 12, again considering the importance of parents raising their children not only to love virtue but also to be willing to sacrifice all for it and for Christ. We considered three stories where mothers had to set aside their natural sensibilities and desire to protect their children from harm. In each case, the mothers act out of their faith to encourage their sons to remain steadfast. We see in and through the stories that they are not only bound by blood but, in a deeper way, by faith. The mothers seek to protect the eternal life of their sons and are willing to sacrifice themselves and their own needs for that end. In doing so they become inheritors of the glory that belongs to the martyrs. Their sons will intercede on their behalf because of the virtue and support that they showed.  These are not easy stories to consider and one is compelled to set aside one's judgment and to listen to them with faith. We are to see these martyrs and those who support them as living icons of the gospel. In this they will be the most compelling witnesses - those who counted all in this world as refuse compared to the surpassing worth of knowing and gaining Christ. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:30:55 Eric Williams: “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.” - GK Chesterton   00:39:05 Anthony: I am friends with several Copts in Hampton VA.  Beautiful people, understand suffering.  Same with my Iraqi Syriac Catholic friends.   00:42:30 Anthony: Sometimes I wonder what is the dividing line between rigorous ascetic practice ans insanity.  Is love the difference?   00:54:33 Ambrose Little: Discernment of the will of God. Union of the will with God, so that the actions flow out of that union. So yes, love in that sense, in that God is love and union with His will is union with Love. There is some danger, it seems, in that persons may seek out the actions for themselves, as a kind of emulation of holiness, when what makes such acts holy is the heart in tune with God's.   00:55:22 Anthony: Thank you, Ambrose   01:12:45 Carol Nypaver: What is that song called?   01:12:54 Fr. We're back to a more recent era in this episode as we look back at a show from the 2016 tour five years ago (yes, it's been five years) from Hampton, Virginia. While a great show with many moments to take out from it, this show may be remembered most for it happening on the day when the band had to cancel their Raleigh, NC show due to the state's LGBTQ discriminatory HB2 law. We'll go into full detail about the band's decision to cancel the show as well as John's original plans for that week and how he almost tried for Hampton. However, thinking that the Raleigh and subsequent Columbia shows would be enough, there is a certain song that John missed on this night that we'll discuss at length. This show has a very unique setlist with some throwbacks to past Virginia shows. For those who remember the Virginia Beach show from 2000, it was their first show since the Roskilde tragedy. Two major moments that came out of this show were the It's OK tag off of Daughter and opening with Long Road. Both moments were called back to in this show, including a version of Long Road in the middle of the set that is almost unprecedented. We'd also hear songs that are less common in the modern day era of Pearl Jam including Brain Of J, Habit, Sad, Breath and Inside Job. We've reached our 2021 goal less than five months into the year! In this powerful Red Shoes Living Podcast, Lonnie Mayne talks with Bronze Medal Olympian, Kellie Wells Brinkley. This is a special and talented woman you want to know. Her story keeps you on the edge of your seat and you find yourself cheering her on throughout the podcast. Kellie shares the incredible hurdles she powered through, over and conquered, to go on to win the Bronze Medal in 2012. It was considered one of the most dramatic stories in the history of the Olympic games.Kellie shares with us her belief that "not all types of movement is progress. Sometimes, you have to stop to move forward." She also believes that when you think you have reached your "glass ceiling", set a new one and keep pushing. Kellie Wells hails from Richmond Virginia. She attended James River High School where she graduated with honors and then chose to attend Hampton University in Hampton Virginia. During her time at Hampton University, Wells was a four-year letterman, three year Captain, elected the school’s most valuable athlete, earned all Mid Eastern Athletic Conference honors, and made history by becoming the school’s first NCAA Division 1 All-American in any sport. While she thrived on the track, she managed to graduate college in three and a half years and go on into the University’s five year MBA program and complete that early as well. Kellie suffered a heartbreaking injury at the 2008 Olympic Trials where she was unable to compete in the finals due to a severe hamstring tear. Wells made an impressive comeback in 2011 by winning her first USA outdoor and indoor national titles and dominating the 100-meter Hurdles. Wells’ winning time of 7.79 at the 2011 USA Indoor Championships was the No. 1 time in the world for the year and at the ninth fastest of all time. In the summer of 2011, Wells also went public with another heartbreaking struggle she faced – being sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend. Wells moved out of the abusive house in the 10th grade and a few weeks later her mother passed away in a car accident along with her mother's boyfriend. Wells unknowingly drove past the accident site on her way home, not realizing her mother was in the car wreck. Her honors include: • Four-time National Champion (100-meter hurdles); two-time National Champion (60-meter hurdles); Co-National Record Holder (55-meter hurdles)• 2012 Presidential Rising Star Award; awarded by President Barack Obama • Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame Inductee• Olympic Ambassador• United States Army Athlete Ambassador• USA Track and field ambassador • US Olympic committee safe sports advisor and Ambassador Kellie has a foundation called “The Hits and Hurdles Foundation”, that services people that have taken major hits and overcome many obstacles in life. Kellie enjoys helping Men, Woman, and Children that have overcome obstacles, sexual abuse, and all types of violence. The foundation also teaches self-love, empowerment, and taking care of their Mind, Body, and Soul. Kellie prides herself on being a champion for the voiceless and empowering women to take back what was stolen from them and not only surviving but thriving.

Today I'm speaking with Amber Wilson, a certified Nurse Midwife in Virginia with her Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Amber knew she wanted to become a midwife after receiving prenatal care from a midwife during her first pregnancy. Amber's journey to midwifery includes working as a pediatric nurse and a labor and delivery nurse for a number of years while serving in the Navy. After midwifery school, she joined a home birth practice in Idaho. Now living in Virginia, she's serving military families and teaching nursing classes at Old Dominion University. Amber shares with us how she used the GI bill and other resources within the Navy to get a nursing degree, go to midwifery school to become a Certified Nurse Midwife and then earn her Doctorate of Nursing Practice. She shares how she juggled the realities of school, work and motherhood and relied on her support network to make it happen. After working as a labor and delivery nurse in a hospital and as a homebirth midwife at a birth center in Idaho, she ultimately decided to pursue a career in the hospital setting. Amber reflects on what she learned as a hospital nurse and as a homebirth midwife and the financial and lifestyle factors that played into her decision. We also discuss bullying within midwifery, specifically within the preceptor-student relationship and the commonly used phrase, “midwives eat their young.” We describe concrete examples of bullying within midwifery, the career and financial impact an abusive preceptor can have on the student, what a healthy preceptor-student relationship looks like and how to tell the difference and tips for students who find themselves facing abuse. Amber also shared that she's reading Mother George: The Midwife Who Shocked Grays Lake. In this episode, we look back in space and time to examine the life of an extraordinary pioneer of the space race and literally our place in space -- the pale blue dot image. First Dave talks to Clayton Turner, the Director of the Langley Research Center in Hampton Virginia as we examine the life of the late Katherine Johnson. Made famous in the book and movie, Hidden Figures, Johnson's mathematical computations paved the way to put the first Americans into space including Alan Shepard and John Glenn and the lunar missions of the Apollo Program. Johnson passed away on February 24 at the age of 101. We also visit with Katrina Young, a NASA Public Relations specialist who got to know Johnson well during her many return visits to Langley.

Salvation and Stuff

She was born September 13, 1904 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was named Alberta Christine Williams. She would be an only child. Her father was the Reverend Adam Daniel Williams, or A.D.  -  the preacher at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Alberta lived a relatively normal life for the time and age. She went to church faithfully and learned to play the piano. As Alberta was nearing her last days in High school, her parents started to board a girl at their house whose name was Woodie. Woodie’s brother was named Michael. Even if it was something in their minds, some sort of attraction was shared between Michael and Alberta. Yet, college was calling and Alberta left the state to attend school. Not long after, at the young age of 20, Alberta earned a teaching degree from what is now Hampton University in Hampton Virginia. Upon graduating, Alberta and Michael began courting. They were married on Thanksgiving Day, 1926. Alberta was twenty-two years old. They were married in her father’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. Encouraged by his new father in law A.D., Michael began his schooling in ministry in the same year. Alberta was raised by a preacher and now married to one in training. Within four short years the newly weds had three children. The oldest daughter Willie, Middle son Michael Jr., and youngest son, Alfred. But shortly after Alberta gave her father three grandchildren, he died on March 21, 1931. Because of this Alberta’s husband and green minister became the new pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in March of the same year. Within a relatively short time, in 1934 Michael was one of ten Baptist ministers who after being able to visit the Holy Land, traveled to Germany. That was the same year the President of Germany (Hindenburg) would die. Hitler would then assume centralized power of the German people becoming the Führer - being both Chancellor and President. Despite the present mess Germany found itself in, Michael was mesmerized by the country’s religious history  - Undoubtedly, Martin Luther. Seeing the sites where Protestantism was birthed, had a profound impact on the young minister. And upon arriving home in Atlanta, Michael King changed his name to Martin Luther King. He then changed his middle child’s name from Michael to Martin Luther King Jr. The boy was five years old at the time. During all this, Alberta remained a close and caring mother to all her children. Martin Jr. would later write, that she “was behind the scenes setting forth those motherly cares, the lack of which leaves a missing link in life.” King, “An Autobiography of Religious Development,” 12 September 1950–22 November 1950, in Papers 1:359–363. While Alberta was in the midst of raising her family, her own mother died in 1941 of a heart attack. During these years, Alberta served in the church she was raised in becoming president of the Ebenezer Women's Committee from 1950 to 1962. Besides this, Alberta’s talent in music was put to use as directer and organist of the church choir. By this time, her husband had become a mature preacher and civil rights activist becoming the head of the NAACP and her middle son was following close in his steps. Martin Jr. graduated with a doctorate in systematic theology from Boston University in 1955. Both father and son were now serving as Ebenezer’s preaching ministers. Martin Jr. had become prominent enough that the FBI under Hoover, began monitoring him by the end of the same year. But as Luther became more of a figurehead in both Christian and political activity, Alberta found the joy of her son’s success mixed with real fear. Martin Luther Jr. was arrested on numerous occasions and went to jail twenty nine times, sometimes months at a time. His determination to see a part of God’s Kingdom arrive here on earth by people not judging others based on the color of their skin but their character was gaining more support from all people. Luther’s non violence demonstrations influenced greatly by Mahatma Gandhi, was beginning to make their point and people, black and white were being won over. But not without great cost. The political landscape at the time was ripe with upheaval, and at times violence. Just four months after,  Martin’s “I have a dream” speech in Washington ( August 28, 1963), the president of the United States was assassinated (on November 22, 1963), in Dallas, TX. The nation mourned. If the leader of the country was not properly protected, what chance did a black civil rights leader have of safeguarded? Little did Alberta know, and although it wasn't too personal, JFK’s assignation was just the beginning of deaths that she would soon face. Her fears increased, when on February 21, 1965, Malcom X was murdered by Nation of Islam radicals. No one, black or white, was safe from anyone. As her son Martin became more prominent and spoke out against the Vietnam War, the FBI strengthened its surveillance on Luther concerned that he was influenced by Communists, Black Nationalists or both. Whether Luther was aware or not of the FBI’s work, he continued his. In April of 1968, he traveled to Memphis in support of the local sanitations worker’s union.   On April 3rd, he gave a speech with some words seeming to foreshadow his death. Luther proclaimed, “I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.” King, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” Address Delivered at Bishop Charles Mason Temple, in A Call to Conscience, ed. Carson and Shepard, 2001. The following day, just after 6:00 pm standing on the balcony outside his room at the Lorraine Motel, Martin Luther King, Jr. was struck in the neck by an assassin’s bullet. His brother Alfred was staying in the room beneath him. Surrounded by his friends and associates he was pronounced dead an hour later. It was April 4, 1968 and he was 39 years old. In an instant, all of Alberta’s fears had materialized. Despite her prayers, and her faith in God, her son was taken from the country, but more painfully, taken from her. She was 64. God seemed to have lost control. The nation was out of control. Only two months after her son was killed, Presidential hopeful and friend of the Kings, Robert F. Kennedy was shot and killed  while giving a speech in Los Angeles, CA. Things just could not have been worse. While the pain of losing her son was still acute, Alberta took comfort in her daughter Millie, her husband Martin, and her son Alfred Daniel. The father and son were still pastoring together at her dad’s old Ebenezer Baptist Church. But then on July 21, 1969, just 14 months after Martin’s death, the unthinkable happened. Alberta’s youngest child and last son, Alfred Daniel King, was found drowned in his own pool. His death was ruled as accidental. And while Alfred was obviously depressed from his brother’s death and at times struggled with alcohol, he was a good swimmer. Not to allude that the cause of his drowning was unimportant, Alfred was nonetheless gone and Alberta had now lost both of her cherished boys. Although slowly, time crept forward. And despite all the chaos swirling around Alberta, a constant and solace in her life was her church and her ministry there. She was raised at the  Ebenezer Baptist Church and married there. It was her father’s church, had been her son’s church and now continued to be her husband’s church, but in reality, it was her church. Only five years had past since losing Alfred, six for Martin, but the 69 year old Alberta found herself comfortable as she played her familiar pipe organ on a Sunday morning. She was at peace leading the church choir and playing the organ. In more ways than one, it was her sanctuary. As she played, a young short black man, new to the church entered, joining the 400 others in attendance. He was 23 years old but looked much younger. He had a wide and large head with an abnormally long distance between his eyes that sat behind tinted eyeglasses. The innocent looking young man whose name was Marcus found a seat in the front row as Alberta was playing "The Lord's Prayer”. He had hoped to sit closer to Martin Luther Sr., but was unable. Shortly after sitting down, Marcus drew two pistols from his clothing and started to fire at those closest to him, namely the elderly woman playing the organ. The beautiful sound of the pipes were deafeningly silenced by gunfire. Alberta King was shot and killed on that Sunday morning, June 30, 1974 by Marcus Wayne Chenault - a mentally ill Black Hebrew Israelite. Alberta died on the floor of the church that she was raised in - that she was married in - and that she faithfully served in. She was less than 100 yards away from her son Martin’s final resting place across the street. Any sadness and despair that Alberta might have carried at the time was now gone. She met her maker that she long served and committed herself to. She joined the heavenly family of God of saints from eternity past - but no reunion was as sweet as that which she shared with her two sons. Years after her death, Ebenezer dedicated it's new pipe organ in honor of Alberta’s lifelong love of music and worship. _____________________________________VERSES: Matt 27:46, Mark 15:35, Psalm 22, Job 13:15 SPONSOR:COMMUNITY RENEWAL - Community Renewal invites the whole body of Christ to take the whole Gospel to the whole city in order to demonstrate "our good works and glorify our father who is in heaven."631 N. 2nd StreetTucson, AZ 85705(520) 622-1482

According to Hotep Idris Galeta, the famed south African jazz-musician and educator, in his article, "The Development of Jazz in South Africa", he wrote that "South African Jazz has had many elements contributing to its evolution and development. The most prominent and significant being the rich eclectic cultural diversity of the country's inhabitants and the influence of African/American musical culture upon it over the years. These two variants coupled with an environment of legislated racism, gross human rights violations, created the unique artistic forge and mold responsible for the evolution of South African Jazz. The first informal contact the inhabitants of Cape Town had with African Americans was during the American Civil War, when the Confederate warship the “Alabama” came into the port of Cape Town in 1862 to replenish its supplies. The “Alabama” patrolled the South Atlantic where it would lie in wait for Union Ships to come around the Cape from the Far East on its way to the east coast ports of Philadelphia, New York, New Port and Boston. It would then attack, plunder and sink them. The “Alabama” was one of the most notorious and feared Southern commerce raiders on patrol in the South Atlantic sending some fifty-eight Union vessels to the bottom of the ocean during her two year patrol. The Alabama was finally tracked down and sunk off the coast of France by a Union Warship on the 19th of June 1864. On June 19th 1890 South Africans had their first formal contact with black-Americans and Black-American music when the “Virginia Jubilee Singers” from Hampton Virginia presented a series of concerts in Cape Town. Orpheus McAdoo was born in 1858 in Greensborough, North Carolina. As a young man he attended the Hampton Institute in Hampton Virginia, where he studied and graduated as a teacher in 1876. Before turning to music as a professional career in 1886 he taught school in Pulaski and Accomac Counties in the state of Virginia for ten years. In 1886 he toured Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East after joining five members of the original Fisk Jubilee singers. Upon his return to the U.S. a year or two later McAdoo formed his own company by recruiting some ex students and graduates from Hampton amongst who were his future wife Mattie Allen and his brother Eugene. South Africa has deep and clearly identifiable connections to the African diaspora, particularly in the experiences of people of African descent who live in the U.S. What we will hear next is Africa World Now Project's tribute to Hugh Masekela who transition to the ancestral realm on January 23 2018, through a collage of music, a 2012 Ted-talk by Hugh Masekela himself, 2014 interview with AWNP's Mwiza Munthali, and reflections from various people who live in Southern African—specifically Malawi where Mwiza Munthali is currently on the ground… Our show was produced today in solidarity with the native, indigenous, and Afro-descended communities at Standing Rock; Venezuela; Cooperation Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi; Brazil; the Avalon Village in Detroit; Colombia; Kenya; Palestine; South Africa; and Ghana; and other places who are fighting for the protection of our land for the benefit of all people. KEITH MEDLEY is a Kentucky native and plays one of the most unusual instruments that we've ever come across. It's a one-of-a-kind 27-string guitar that Steve designed himself. In the late 70's his band opened for up-and-comers like George Strait, Johnny Paycheck, Ed Bruce, Rita Coolidge, Neil Young and many more from that era. When Keith got off the road in the late 80s he focused on another passion, building and repairing guitars. He eventually went to work for one of the largest guitar companies in the country building custom guitars, and for a few years also ran his own company, Medley Guitars and with it performs his own compositions. DONNA ULISSE (pronounced "you-liss-ee") was born in Hampton Virginia and surrounded by a musical family. Donna made her first appearance singing at the tender age of three when she wandered onto the stage with a bluegrass band. Since then, bluegrass fans are getting to know Ulisse for her songwriter-driven brand of bluegrass, often called "bluegrass without borders." As a writer she has recently had songs recorded by Claire Lynch, Darin & Brooke Aldridge and also had the title cut to Louise Mosrie's "Home" which was the #1 Folk album in the nation in January 2010. In June of 2011 Hadley Music Group released a fourth CD on Ulisse; another collection of original tunes by this gifted singer songwriter titled "An Easy Climb". Also, she just completed a tour of Russia. The invitation to perform was sent from the U.S. Embassy in Russia where Donna performed with several Russian bluegrass bands.
