Pastor Carolyn introduced the practice of Lectio Divina, a meditative approach to reading the Word of God. The sermon focused on 1 Corinthians 13, commonly known as the "love chapter." Pastor Carolyn read the passage in The Message translation to provide a fresh perspective. She emphasized that without love, even eloquence, spiritual gifts, and acts of sacrifice are meaningless. Love is described as enduring, selfless, humble, patient, forgiving, and truthful. It is contrasted with self-centeredness, anger, and keeping records of wrongs. Love is an essential virtue that should guide believers in their relationships with others and their service to God. Pastor Carolyn encouraged the listeners to reflect on a word or phrase that stood out to them during the reading and to allow God to speak through that. She emphasized the transformative power of engaging with God's Word and encouraged personal prayer and dialogue with God. The sermon concluded with an invitation to revisit the process of Lectio Divina individually and experience God's presence and guidance in their lives.   www.venicepres.org

Long hailed as a “historic diplomatic breakthrough,” the reality is that US president Richard Nixon's 1972 trip to China has been rather oversold. Yes, the brief Mao-Nixon meeting did start a thaw in relations, but Nixon may have given more than he got. Here's a gripping tale of geopolitical strategy, grand ambition, secret trips, betrayal and blunders. As well as covering the famous summit which would give rise to the expression, “like Nixon going to China,” we also touch on Chiang Kai-shek's own plans for “going to China” via Vietnam and the Soviet Union.

Diary of a Serial Hostess Podcast (private feed for victoriadelamaza@icloud.com)

Thank you for joining me at Diary of a Serial Hostess. It is such a thrill to see the growth of the newsletter and notice how many of you read it every week. I love the comments, suggestions, and otherwise notes from all of you. I am so excited when a subject touches a nerve, and there is a… conversation! It is advised by the powers that be that once in a while, we (that is we authors) do a recap of favorite articles as a way of re-introducing ourselves to our new readers. Clearly, new readers already know… but just in case, I am following their suggestion. Diary of a Serial Hostess started in the fall of 2021 as we were coming out of Covid and we were going back to small dinners and sporadic gatherings. It was such a re-set in many ways, and I thought it a great moment to think about how I wanted to create my social life in a new town and how I could learn from the past to make a future. At the time, I was writing the food column for a newspaper, and my articles -that I thought were charming and amusing- were edited by a very young editor who took out all the funny bits. I know that the newspaper was a serious publication, but we are talking about food and entertaining here, not solving the world's economic issues. After two years of this, I sort of lost interest. The stories I write about are personal experiences accumulated from living in New York, Southampton, Palm Beach, Greenwich, and now Charleston. Not that I am trying to show off, just that these cities and towns are enclaves of high society behavior, and, as an avid participant, I have had the privilege of seeing “it” up close and personal. I don't name-drop unless it is a public figure, and I never say anything nasty about anyone who is alive. An old saying in Spain badly translates as “You can talk about the sin, but never the sinner.” (I am sure this quote is slightly different …) and I take to heart the concept of being kind and telling stories, not criticizing and being judgemental. My favorite person to make fun of is…. myself. This week, I will share some favorite newsletters (just links, don't worry) that have received the most comments via email, social media, and here. Take a look and scroll through. I hope you are amused and entertained! How to Grovel in High Society Is one of my early newsletters. It is so important to learn how to say “I'm sorry” and do it in a believable and truthful way. In High Society and in everyday life. A Bit of Gossip is about nice gossip, or rather, sharing information about each other without malice. Categories of Friends is just an opinion of the different types of friends. I got a lot of comments on this one… still giggling about it. Odd One Out . In High Society, odd is odd—the importance of including single friends. And oh boy, did this one touch a nerve! Lots of comments and feedback. Thank you, thank you. Taking a bow. Here are some of my favorite food-related articles. What is Good for the Soul has a great cheese biscuit that is perfect for making with all those end bits of cheese. Plan Well, Well in Advance, and a great crispy Brussels sprouts recipe. Summer Soiree and a perfect dinner for the hot summer months. Just One Bite is all about the apps. And a few hors d'oeuvres recipes to add to your rotation. And some making fun of… myself! When the Culinary Muses are on Holiday, It happens to the best of us. What to do? Here are some ideas… The Circle of Life: and how I deal with my garden. Making an Entrance: is about me… and some of the financial lessons I have learned along the way. Dearest Reader: Another huge growth spurt in Diary of a Serial Hostess, thank you all for subscribing and sharing and liking my stories. You cannot imagine the thrill that is to see friends and friends of friends engaged, commenting on, and talking about my newsletter. So exciting! Not that you are as obsessed as I am about the analytics that Substack provides us, but just to say that readership has doubled in the last two months and there are about 1500 downloads on the podcasts. (I am patting myself on the back)After writing this column for oh, gosh about 9 months now, it has developed into this current format. So, just to put my thoughts down on paper here is a sort of explanation of posts and what happens when and where. Diary of a Serial Hostess is published every Friday morning at around 8 am. I schedule posts so that if I am traveling or not at my desk on Friday morning, posts go out no matter what. As many of you know, I often entertain at home on Thursdays and so…. well, you know. This newsletter started as a way to share my insights into the entertaining world of high society and it is evolving… as we all do. Now that I feel older and therefore wiser, writing this is how I want to share my knowledge, humor, and perhaps wisdom with style, glamour, and a bit of wit to make entertaining at home fun and un-stressful.A pattern has emerged, so here are some of the categories that happen monthly. Resources & Sources: Is now published on the first week of each month… mostly on Tuesday but could be on Wednesday. An extra personal list of my favorites to Read, Watch, Collect, Eat, and Cook. It is sort of the most commercial of the posts and a way to gather information with lots of links for you to click around. Please let me know if you want a mention of something you like. I would love to share it! Or we can start an info-sharing stream for books and movies that we all like and recommend. Humm… great thought! Entertaining Story: Published once a month, this is the most classic and sort of old-fashioned post with tips on the actual meal, recipes, photos, table settings, etc… like a Veranda or House Beautiful feature. Could have a video but it will certainly have a podcast attached. Titles like “It's a Classic!” and “Spring Lunch in the Garden” or “Summer Night supper”. Recipes are behind the pay-wall. High Society Commentary: This is the core of DOSH. Inspired by recent events or a comment that someone makes, or some behavior that I think needs explaining or a personal story…. meant to be amusing and charming with no malice but certainly opinionated. It has a podcast format and sometimes a recipe as a way to illustrate a point… subjects like “Category of Friends” “When You Are Not Invited” and “How to Grovel in High Society” tackle the mysteries of life in the stylish lane. Recipes and comments are behind a paywall. 10 Questions: The newest collection of posts, published once a month as a way to share all the different types of entertaining at home, a short interview with a “serial host” about their way of doing it. Love the black & white photo and the casual conversation over a glass of wine. BTW, the first one coming out next week is about a fabulous private chef from Nashville whom you will love! Live from the No Panic Zone—I'm Steve Gruber—I am America's Voice—God Bless America—God Bless You and let's do this! This is the Steve Gruber show— I am just an overgrown Zygote in search of humanity and leadership in a nation—that seems desperately in need of both—   Here are three big things you need to know right now—   ONE— A federal judge has for now slammed the door on the Biden Administrations rules for transgender bathrooms and lockerrooms—and that could be a big set back for the Blue Agenda— TWO— In Texas—a stunning report about the failures of law enforcement in the Uvalde school massacre—it is heartbreaking to the families of 19 kids and 2 teachers—many of whom could have survived— THREE— Fist bumps and failure—that would pretty well sum up the last few days and the pathetic mission to grovel at the feet of Saudi Arabia to beg for more oil— Joe Biden—having promised to bankrupt the American energy sector as a candidate for President—is doing his best to follow through on that strange proclamation now that he is in office—  he went to a meet a man he said he would not—Mohammed Bin Salmon—to plead for more output—he fist bumped the man connected to the murder of an American journalist—and honestly made a fool of himself— Biden didn't visit Texas, Alaska or North Dakota to discuss energy—instead he went to a country he promised to label a pariah—to look for answers instead of America—   Why? You have to ask why? Because the Green New Dealers are not following science they are following a religious movement—and no dissent is allowed—ever! And instead of realizing his whole green energy obsession is going to get rejected completely over the next couple of years—leaving the left with nothing to show for their efforts and in fact they may find that they have lost ground on their Green Religion—because they are completely over-playing their hand—Biden and his bunny hugging zealots are plowing blindly ahead— and plowing under America along the way— They are just turning a blind eye to the plight of Middle Class families and the pain being inflicted all across the nation—where food banks and homeless shelters are bracing for an increased demand—they may not be able to handle— The high cost of energy in all its forms is plowing under family budgets and the dreams of millions right now— Plowing under any chance of retirement- or staying retired for many- plowing under the idea of putting in a few less hours and plowing under a lot more- The high cost of energy- as a direct result of the reckless policies attacking American energy—everything costs more—I went to the mall yesterday—not how I normally spend two or three hours—BUT it was an education—looking for Nike's or any kind of basic black tennis shoes for my kids was jaw dropping—you can hardly find a pair under $100—and several were double that— No wonder parents are shell shocked by Bidens disastrous policies—and the damage being done to their wallets— The inflation—delivered by the reckless spending of trillions of dollars—flooding into the economy—is plowing under what at first looked like pretty good gains in wages for American workers—BUT now—those raises—are running far behind the rising cost of everything— With the Consumer Price Index at 9.1% and many of us realizing- its actually much higher- its no wonder people are so worried right now and scared to death they will be the next ones to get plowed under by the Biden plans and the socialist ideas— Gas is up 60% from last year—and double what it was when President Disaster stumbled into the Oval Office—Fuel Oil is up nearly 100% from last year—meat—up over 10%-- milk jumped 16—eggs 33— coffee 16—and cars both new and used are too expensive to even discuss for most families anymore—BUT Joe and the Clowns still think you should just run out and buy an electric car—because—you know—spending 60 grand will save you a couple hundred dollars a month— That is true Democrat math right there— And lets not forget who is really getting plowed right now—farmers—from here to the Netherlands—diesel—fertilizer and the war on agriculture in general is making it nearly impossible for many—in fact farm foreclosures continue at a very dangerous pace— That means that food security in this nation—that has produced more food than any in history—could be facing food shortages and real challenges in the not to distant future— But don't worry China and others are buying up the farm land and they will be sure to use it in your best interest— The idea of homeownership is getting plowed under right now too—the days of 2 and 3 percent mortgages are just a memorty now—and likely will never return—some would say that's a good thing—would you? American pride is also getting plowed under—BUT that will not last—because we will rise above the incompetence of these fools in Washington—we will get rid of the Socialists and communists that wander among us—and we will get a shot at rebuilding this great nation— But you have to make sure you don't get plowed under by all the things you are seeing—and know we can—and we will do better in the days to come—we will get our hands back on the wheel—and President Disaster will get the boot before the point of no return— BUT you must vote against every single person that supports what is currently happening—you must vote for America First candidates—I don't know who will end up running for the White House in 2 years—and right now it doesn't matter—right now we have to correct what we can and go from there—this is a critical time in American history and you have the power to get involved and make a difference

God introduces Adam to Adam by naming him. God introduces Adam to Eve… and Adam cries, “Woah Man” (woman). We never really have an official God introduction where he reaches out a handshake and says, “Hello, I am God, Your Father and creator.” God reveals who He is, through fulfilling a need. Adam & Eve needed a creator, and in fulfilling that need, God introduces Himself.   Adam and Eve had it made in the shade. They had everything they needed in the garden. Everything they needed came from God. God was everything they needed.     It all went wrong when they reached out toward someone else… the serpent. The serpent was not concerned with the needs of Adam & Eve. The serpent was concerned with his own selfish desires.   Instead of God – the serpent.   How would God handle this situation?God loved mankind, but mankind had rejected Him.   How would you handle rejection? Burn it all down? Revenge? Lower your standards? Grovel & beg?   God keeps re-introducing Himself to mankind through our needs and weakness.   What if you had to reintroduce yourself to someone repeatedly? Movies: “50 first dates” or “Groundhog Day”The Bible is the story of God re-introducing Himself to mankind over & over again.   Awkward Introductions In Exodus 3, God awkwardly re-introduces Himself to mankind as Adam and Eve stand nakedly before Him. God speaks to Moses from a burning bush and tells Moses to set the slaves free in Egypt. Moses then asks this question…   Exodus 3:13 (NIV) Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, ‘What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?”   Moses is talking to God from a burning bush and basically asks… What is your name again? EMBARASSING. 2000 years after creating mankind, we need a reintroduction.   14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am' has sent me to you.'”     God re-introduces Himself as “I AM.” What a strange way to introduce yourself.   I AM (Exodus 3:14) I exist, have always existed, and will always exist. Self-existent. I need no help existing. It requires more info…  I AM what?  I AM fill in the blank.   God is the I AM… but it requires more info.   God also introduces Himself as the HE IS.       As early as Genesis 2, God is introduced by the name “HE IS.”   HE IS Yahweh   I AM & HE IS? What is the difference? (1ST and 2nd forms of speech - perspective)  Say, “HE IS YAHWEH.”   Yahweh means HE IS. Used 6,521 in scripture and another 50 times it is us with the shortening “YAH.” (Exodus 15:2 for example) HalleluYAH means highest praise to YAHWEH – HE IS.   Say “HE IS YAHWEH.”   God invites us to call Him Yahweh… but this still requires more info?  HE IS what?   Genesis 2:4 (NIV) This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.   The word Lord is Yahweh. We have translated it LORD because the words “HE IS” would confuse the translation.   The Word God = Elohim   Yahweh Elohim | HE IS God- Genesis 2:4   This is the first compound name of God in scripture. 2 words are put together to reveal God's identity – HE IS GOD.   When Humanity needed a creator God to bring life to the universe, God came up and introduced Himself as YAHWEH ELOHIM – HE IS Go...

Diary of a Serial Hostess is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a paid subscriber. In the world of high society -or any other- having a good reputation is worth a pot of gold, well, actually more like one of those huge diamonds; yes, those rare, flawless, emerald-cut ones that make your finger develop muscle tone. A good reputation is like an invisible aura that follows you sprinkling fairy dust wherever you go. Humm, maybe like a guardian angel? (I think I have read too many rom-coms lately). A bad reputation is exactly the same as the good one except that…. it is bad. “Reputation is what other people think about you, character is who you are” Your reputation needs to be nurtured, cared for, and protected if you want to be considered in society. Not that you should really care what “people” think about you. However, it is your character that drives that consideration and the reputation that precedes you. A good reputation opens proverbial doors, eases the way into business deals, and speaks for it itself in social situations. Yes, it precedes you sending information ahead of time so when you show up… Reputations take years to develop, both good and bad. A bad reputation is not just a “one-off” but a pattern of behavior. It is consistent and expected. It is what your actions have caused and how people have reacted to them. It is when bad judgment is totally expected and anticipated. It is when people cringe when you walk into a room and they roll their eyes: “Oh Johnny is Johnny… you know…” It is when a friend says “Watch out for Charley… not trustworthy ”. Or when as you are introduced to someone, the person whispers: “Danny is totally two-faced. Beware”. I know someone who has a reputation for cheating at golf. 30 years later, if you mention his name anywhere in the world, the golf story pops up. Automatically. Regardless of whether he has cheated ever again or not, his reputation precedes him. Someone else I know was accused of making naughty movies. Seriously. And that wonderful person, whom I know very well and will put my hand on the fire to say that she didn't, is still being critiqued for doing so. Her reputation precedes her. I also know someone who has really worked on his reputation. Saintly! is what you hear when you mention his name. My personal experience -and that of many other friends- is the polar opposite. Mean spirited, cruel, and totally ruthless. Not someone you'd want by your side. But this person cruises through life under his wrongly earned great reputation. I can tell you from experience that trusting someone based on their “great” reputation is like putting your hand in a bucket of snakes and expecting to not get bitten. But, once one achieves that high strata of an exalted reputation, anything and everything one does is considered brilliant. If you have the reputation of being stylish, mixing five animal patterns all in one outfit would be considered… so chic! If you are known to be a great cook, serving frozen meatloaf with powder mashed potatoes (and not telling) is… Inspired! If your reputation is of being trustworthy, any opinion or comment is considered… The Truth. And, if you have the reputation of being a savvy business person, any deal you present is considered… Genius! Reputations linger but are not lost because of a moment in time, one bad decision, or your reaction to a specific stressful situation. We are all human, we all make errors. It is consistency that wins the day here! It does happen…. when you are not paying attention that people around you take advantage of those moments to try and destroy you. Maybe jealous of your success, desperate to one-up you, or even just do it because they can. The good news is that your character will not be tarnished by a small group of evil-minded people. It is their reputation that is at stake here and their lack of judgment in creating a smear campaign against you that will be remembered. Your reputation may be hurt for a moment, but your character remains intact. Good reputations are earned. Bit by bit, day by day. And so, the question here is what to do. How does one protect oneself from the possible enemy? How does one protect The Reputation? How do you convince the world that you are not the person those venom-spraying people claim you are? Easy. Hang in there. Your consistently good character will speak for itself. And so go back to quote: “Reputation is what other people think of you, character is who you are”. If you care, the only way that you can help yourself is by creating a posse of friends who will speak on your behalf and crush any rumor or conversation about you. Similar to what politicians -and others- do by hiring “spin doctors”, society people will listen only to other high-placed socials. Seriously, if Annette approves of you, then you are totally in. Bad reputation and all. But, seriously, basing your life on what “people” think of you is never a good idea. You cannot control their thoughts, their misinformation, and their obsession with you. Just focus on maintaining your flawless character! Easy, right? And so, the moral of this story as explained by Socrates is: “The way to a good reputation is an endeavor to be what you desire to appear”. This is pretty close to something my father used to tell my sisters and me growing up, which is that not only should we behave well, but we have to look like we are behaving well. Geeez! Diary of a Serial Hostess is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a paid subscriber. My New Year's Resolution for 2022 is to not speak badly about anyone (well, and also to lose 20 pounds but let's not discuss that!) As of now, I am not doing too badly. I am really remembering that being kind is a better way to be and, who am I to throw the first stone? On that note, I am the first to have a re-hash breakfast after a big party, and love hearing other people's versions of dinners at home, and thoroughly enjoy the frivolous scoop of who-did-what-where. I am always fascinated by people's lives and how they succeed at life and at work… or not. I don't, however, like friend-bashing. In the world of high society, being a nasty gossip is akin to being a piranha. Yes, you'll get invited only when the host wants you to spread the word, or go to big parties where the damage of your critical opinions will wash out in a sea of people. Gossip, pure, un-adulterated gossip is totally fun, irresistible, and charming. It is a way to share information about someone without malice or ill intent. It is a way we relate in society and how we pass on personal knowledge of friends and acquaintances. It can actually be helpful on occasions, like when meeting new people or a possible beau or even at work when interviewing for a new position. Getting a “heads up” about someone can be the difference between success and failure. Gossip, in this case, is just that… an amusing story about someone with the intent to make them look… funnier, prettier, more successful, charming, in essence: better. Dominic Dunne's books are a great example. Fabulously juicy and full of inside scoop, but not nasty. Nasty gossip, on the other hand, is putting someone down for the sake of it, it is cruel and untrue, often based on a sliver of misinformation and enlarged to create havoc and pain. Nasty comments, for some reason, always float around that person making it necessary to bring it up constantly and defend yourself. It is like a constant reminder of what it was, a life-long dark cloud overhead. Truman Capote comes to mind. Sounds like fun? I don't think so. When I first moved to Palm Beach, I was invited to a couple of ladies' lunches where the girls spent the entire lunch bashing their husbands… I learned more about these people in an hour and a half than they probably wanted me to know. It was horrible. And I have to say they never became my friends. I have learned early on not to say nasty things about people in my group. It always, always gets back to them. Always. Then you have to grovel and ask forgiveness by prostrating yourself at their mercy (see archives “How to Grovel in High-Society). Most people may forgive you, but they will never forget. In time, I have learned to tell the story… as scandalous and unbelievable as it may be without saying names. In the inside knowledge, the guessing game begins and ends with me. There is a saying from Spain that roughly translated says: “Talk about the sin, not the sinner”. And I must say, that I love correcting highly exaggerated bits of gossip about people that I do know. Friends are friends for a reason. Support them in public or move on. In addition, anyone who listens to your hilariously funny commentary about Raymond's little personal issues will always wonder if they may be next. So I say, defend your friends no matter what. Of course, all bets are off in regards to movie stars and badly behaving royals. It has always amazed me how society moves around malicious gossip and how people are shunned for no reason at all. And also, how some people are like Teflon pans; they get away with near murder and society thinks is perfectly all right. Having lived in small, micro-cosmic communities like Southampton and Palm Beach, I can tell you that nasty gossip destroys not only reputations but families and livelihoods. When you hear someone start a sentence with “Have you heard?” or “Did you know” or “How about…” run the opposite direction. These people, the gossip mongers, name droppers, and tale-tellers are dangerous individuals. You know who they are. Stay away. There is a very clear line that separates a fabulous raconteur from a nasty gossiper! So now, I really verify my facts before “telling” a story or mentioning personal information about anyone (without using their name, of course). Being discreet is truly an asset. If you like the inside scoop of famous people, check out these books: Nemesis: The True Story of Aristotle Onassis by Peter Evans. A friend recently described it as: “Wow...eye-popping. A big dish of slutty ice cream and I enjoyed every bite!” Thank you, MC! Dropped Names by Frank Langella: Juicy tidbits of well-known figures (all now deceased) From Marylin Monroe to Bunny Mellon and more in between. Totally riveting. As the “social whisperer,” you should really take gossip with a proverbial grain of salt. Meaning, don't believe everything you hear and don't repeat it unless you know it is true. Gossiping about extra-marital affairs is cruel and could devastate the married person. Telling friends about other people's financial dramas is none of your business and can really hurt their reputations and financial security. It is always about sex or money, right? So, be kind and be discreet. Your friends will be eternally grateful. It is said that guests of guests never bring guests. But guests, in my house, are always welcome to bring guests. It is not the first tier of unknown guests who are the problem, it is the guests of guests that will be an issue. This is a real problem in the world of high-society entertaining. When people begin to hear about the fabulous party you are organizing, those who have not been invited will practically do anything to get invited or will leave town on a very last-minute cruise. While hosting small dinners is not an issue -most sane people are not going to crash a small dinner. But, when, like in the “old” days parties for 40 become the norm, people who are not invited, feel that you are the one that has made the mistake and show up. In this case, graciousness and charm always win and so, give them a drink, ask them to sit in the living room while dessert is served, or pull up a couple of chairs and let them join in. They know that you know and everybody else knows too. If you don't receive a huge bouquet of flowers the next day, strike them from your list forevermore. I am always thrilled to include friend's house guests and new significant others at my parties. If the table is not big enough, I add another table or switch the dinner to a buffet. As a point of good manners, always tell your host ahead of time so there is time to pivot and make everyone feel welcome. But I digress. Let's go back to the subject at hand. I do actually keep records of parties I give, whom I invite, the date, the reason (if any), and what I served. These notes become a reminder of the menus that were hugely successful and the ones that just didn't work. It also reminds me not to serve roast chicken to the same group again, and not to invite the same friends over and over. I don't keep a record of what I wore, which, frankly I think I should, or the wines I served because mostly they are often the same. It is fun to look back at past parties and reminisce. Some party journals have charts for sitting arrangement planning, notes on table decor, flowers, cost, etc… I haven't been able to find one in years, (I had one for each house; my old one was from Smythson) and for my Charleston house, I just use a plain gold notebook… Having a really bad memory, which I do, this notebook keeps me somewhat organized and keeps track of seasonal menus. I also jot down if anything extraordinary happened like firemen coming to the rescue or if I had to change the menu on the fly… My party journal also reminds me of friends that I haven't invited in a while. I never want to upset anyone or be unkind but sometimes people just fall off my radar for no reason at all (as I am sure I do from theirs…). It could be a series of un-meaningful issues or none at all. The point is that they are not on my mind and so, do not make the cut. When this happens, I reach out and invite them to something and start all over again. If friendship and camaraderie are there, it will flourish again. Another way to keep records of guests is a Signature Book. Often set on a table in the entranceway, it works as a collection of autographs and a fun way to look back at the visits of illustrious guests. At my family's cortijo outside Seville, my grandparent's book is still being used at home. The page photographed here is from 1928 when the queen of Spain and her daughters, the infantas, came to visit for lunch and a bullfight in our private bullring. My grandmother mentions the bad weather and that it was a party for 50 people. Edwina Mountbatten and the Marquesa de la Union (among others) had been guests the week before. Since then, my parents have hosted thousands of events and the signature book is a wonderful reminder of fantastic times and long-lasting friendships. I have always felt that when I am invited to someone's house it means much more than just being a frivolous acquaintance. And I feel the same. Once someone makes “the list” it means that I want them in my life and they become part of my rotation of guests. After all, parties are about having a good time with friends, no? A few months ago I chatted with a lady of consequence about guest lists and entertaining and she explained that she really didn't have time to have friends, all she wanted was to collect people to make her dinner parties interesting. Hummmm. I am glad I am not on her rotation! And with that tidbit of information, I leave you today. Larry Hogan may be positioning himself for a primary challenge against President Trump.

It's the summer of 1976 and the England cricket team is preparing for a series against the West Indies. The England captain, the South African-born Tony Greig, says in a pre-series interview that he intends to make his opponents "grovel". This was a highly provocative remark, made about a team of mainly black cricketers from the Caribbean in the era of apartheid; and a remark that Greig was made to regret once the teams took the field.
