This summer marks the tenth anniversary of a landmark production for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Their 2012 Julius Caesar was Britain's first ever high-profile production of a Shakespeare play with an all-Black cast—a milestone that came 76 years after it was first done in the US and 15 years after it was first done in Canada. The production featured Paterson Joseph as Brutus, and he was so impressed by the experience that he wrote Julius Caesar and Me: Exploring Shakespeare's African Play. The book takes an unflinching look at Joseph's time at the RSC, both while working on Caesar and in the 1990s, when the son of St. Lucian parents found himself one of only four Black people in the building. He also writes about his early work, performing sharp and boldly reimagined Shakespeare with the Cheek by Jowl company; his thoughts about race in the British theater; the proper way to play Brutus; Received Pronunciation, and much more. In 2018, Joseph was at the National Black Theater in Harlem, performing his one-man show, Sancho: An Act of Remembrance, about the first Black man in England to cast a vote. We invited him into the studio to talk about the book, Brutus, and more, and we bring that conversation to you again now. Paterson Joseph is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. Paterson Joseph is an acclaimed British actor who has performed major roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, including the title role in Othello; and the leads in The Royal Hunt of the Sun and The Emperor Jones. He has also worked extensively in film, and in television, including recently The Leftovers and Timeless. In 2015, he wrote and performed his one-man play Sancho: An Act of Remembrance on tour. Julius Caesar and Me: Exploring Shakespeare's African Play was published in the US by Methuen Drama, a division of Bloomsbury Books, in 2018. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. Toni Morrison — the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature — was the author of 11 novels. Her first was “The Bluest Eye,” published in 1970. Morrison died at the age of 88 in 2019. Her works, which deeply describe and embody the Black experience, have always been met with critical and commercial success. But they've taken on a renewed significance during our country's current look at systemic racism and police brutality. The legacy of Toni Morrison is celebrated by The Huntington Theatre Company's production of “The Bluest Eye,” which brings her classic debut novel to life. Steeped in the cultural environment of a rural Black community, “The Bluest Eye” is the story of Pecola Breedlove, a young Black girl, who believes blue eyes would make her beautiful. GUESTS: Lydia Diamond, an award-winning, prolific playwright whose own works have been staged in theatres around the country, including here in Boston. Her play, “Stick Fly," enjoyed a Broadway run after debuting here. She is currently on the Faculty of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Awoye Timpo, director of "The Bluest Eye." Timpo's directing repertoire includes the plays “Ndebele Funeral” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and “Carnaval” at the National Black Theater, both produced in New York City. She will next direct a reading series of classic plays by Black playwrights. The Huntington Theatre Company's production of "The Bluest Eye" ends on March 26.

Hill's television credits include “Law & Order: SVU,” “It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Political Animals,”, ”BLUE BLOODS, “Boardwalk Empire”, “Lewis & Clark” and “Luke Cage.” His most recent work includes Steve McQueen's feature film “Widows,” the play “Manhood” at the National Black Theater, and the Netflix series “Maniac.” Hill's "Magnum P.I." character, a military veteran who flies helicopters, shares a distinguished trait with his father, who was a Vietnam veteran chopper mechanic. In This Week in Racism, we consider Stephen's inability to get the coveted blue check of Instagram on his account as a possible signal of racist intent. This episode contains three segments: Move 9 Parole "Stare Into The Lights My Pretties" Anarcho-Syndicalist Organizing in Kosovo MOVE9 Parole First, there's the interview that Bursts held with Michael Davis Africa Jr., a member of the MOVE organization.  MOVE is a Philadelphia-based black liberation group founded by John Africa in 1972. The group lives communally. During the conversation, Michael Jr. talks about the case of the MOVE9, who were 9 members of that group who were arrested and accused of the killing of a police officer in 1978 in Philadelphia, a charge they each deny.  Officer James Ramp was killed following a year of the Philly PD blockading the house for a year under an eviction order and the police besieged the house on August 8th, 1978.  The MOVE 9 have been incarcerated for almost 40 years now, with Merle & Phil dying behind bars.  Police and white supremacist affiliated groups have successfully gotten parole denied for Eddie, Michael and Delbert Africa over the last 9 months as they do for many Political Prisoners from the 1960's through 80's in the U.S.  There are upcoming are parole hearings for Janet, Janine and Debbie Africa and more info on who to petition for their release can be found at http://onamove.com/move-9/. The name of the D.A. who prosecuted the MOVE9 in 1978 and who is still on the paperwork and has a say on the parole of the MOVE9 40 years later is named John Straub. Coming up this Saturday, February 24th starting at 4pm there'll be an event called "Framed In America: The Making of Political Prisoners".  This will take place at The National Black Theater, 2031 5th Ave in Harlem, New York and will include presentations by Ramona Africa, Fred Hampton Jr, Pam Africa, Roger Wareham, Betty Davis, Ralph Poynter and Johanna Fernandez.  More info can be found on the Justice for the Move 9 fedbook group. Stare Into The Light My Pretties The second conversation you'll hear today is an interview by Dissident Island Radio from London from their February 2nd episode. In this, a collective member interviews Filmmaker Jordan Brown, director of ‘Stare Into the Lights My Pretties', discussing their documentary about screen culture and its implications.  The film is available for free on archive.org, youtube and at truthstreammedia.com. DI is a member of the Channel Zero Network of anarchist podcasts available at channelzeronetwork.com. Anarcho-Syndicalist Organizing in Kosovo Finally, we'll be airing an interview conducted by our friends at Crna Luknja on Radio Student in Lubjlana, Slovenia, that they conducted with members of an anarcho-syndicalist collective from Pristina, the capital of Kosovo.  This segment was released as a part of the February 2018 edition of B(A)DNews: Angry Voices From Around The World, from the A-Radio Network of which The Final Straw, Črna Luknja and Dissident Island are members. Keep PUSHing: Building on the #OperationPUSH demands Mere days before FDC's repression effort began scattering active prisoners into new facilities, and into solitary confinement for the weeks surrounding January 15, an Operation PUSH prisoner's anonymous voice reached the world and called on outside supporters to "shine a light from the outside in on the system." In essence, this prisoner saw what was coming and passed the torch to us on the outside. With three clear demands and a simple strategy, this invisible group of prisoners gave a glimpse of what could be, if the networks of outside solidarity and inside communication could coalesce. While we have heard from many prisoners since January 15, we know that the vast majority of FL prisoners still do not know how much support they garnered on the outside. And many who made plans to struggle together have not seen or heard from each other in weeks. In many ways, the next steps towards victory for them are in our hands. It is with this understanding that a group of us on the outside are developing an additional list of demands, based primarily on communication from prisoners we've gotten in recent weeks, that aims to honor the countless who have suffered major sacrifices to develop or report on Operation PUSH as well as those who had no idea what it was, but were punished preemptively simply because they were viewed as potential organizers or participants. We will do all we can to bring these demands to FDC, the Governor and State Legislature, in an effort to carry the prisoners' vision for Operation PUSH forward. In addition to the Operation PUSH demands of payment, parole and pricing, we, supporters of all Florida prisoners struggling for dignity, demand: An end to censorship of publications that give voice to prisoners and/or critique prisons; An end to repression of prisoners for communication with outside advocates; An end to the use of Security Threat Group status as a means for political repression; An end to strip cells and extreme temperatures to torture prisoners; An explanation of the cause for a major spike in 2017 prisoner deaths; Protection of prisoners health from nearby industrial activity, including phosphate mining and landfills; An end to black mold-infested facilities, spoiled food and dilapidated buildings; Removal of all KKK members, and other recognized racist hate groups, from FDC staff; An end to the medical co-pay that results in financial debt and untreated illness; An immediate reduction in prison population using existing guidelines for clemency; and A face-to-face meeting with FDC officials to further discuss these matters. What do you do when you're born to legendary comedian Richard Pryor and white Jewish go-go dancer Shelley Bonus in Los Angeles, California, spending your formative years navigating what it's like to be Black and Jewish? You write a show about it! Rain Pryor joins host Robin Milling for a backstage chat about her one-woman show, Fried Chicken & Latkes, now playing at the National Black Theater in Harlem, New York. On stage Rain tells poignant tales of her childhood, growing up in Beverly Hills in the heyday of the 60s and 70s, expertly weaving in the voices of her mother, her Bubby, her father's grandmother, and her dad. There was the time when she was five and someone called her the 'N' word, and all through her teenage years valley girls bullied her just because she looked different. She tells Robin, 'Growing up in Beverly Hills there weren't kids like me. I think I just wanted to feel normal. It wasn't like I wanted to be white. I didn't want to be black. I just wanted to be OK to be me and it wasn't. I was bullied when kids would chase me down the street throwing rocks at me; that's bullying. It felt like I was running for my life through Beverly Hills! And I literally hid in bushes.' And then there are the stories of her famous father who had Miles Davis play her a lullaby to send her to dreamland, and when she first realized his comic genius. Father and daughter relationships can be tricky after divorce, but Rain also had to deal with sometimes coming second to her dad's fame and career. She tells Robin how his presence is still strongly felt even 10 years after his death, and dedicates the show to his memory.
