“Them,” written by Palestinian playwright Samah Sabawi, focuses on a young couple in a war zone as they debate whether to stay or leave. It captures the wrenching choices people are forced to make in wartime, as well as the humorous, joyful and mundane moments of everyday life that persist despite the violence. A production of the play will run through Aug. 23 at Portland Center Stage’s Ellyn Bye Studio. Malek Najjar, professor of theater arts at the University of Oregon, received special permission from Sabawi to stage “Them” in Eugene and Portland. He joins us with more details about the play and its relevance today.

Bestselling author Cheryl Strayed believes that writing your truth can set you free.Today we're sharing an excerpt from her conversation with Thomas at the upcoming Collective Trauma Summit. In it, she shares about a profound healing act that helped her process deep grief and trauma…writing. More specifically, the way that writing demands raw honesty and vulnerability, revealing our deepest truths about our human experiences. It's also an incredibly effective way to combat the isolation and loneliness that often accompany grief or trauma. In Cheryl's case, sharing her truth in her book, Wild, inspired people to reach out to her with their own stories of loss and pain, creating unexpected, deeply authentic connections. And it's through these connections that we can build much-needed shared spaces for healing individual and collective trauma. If you're moved by this conversation and want to hear the full talk, sign up at the link below and we'll notify you as soon as details are announced for the 2025 Collective Trauma Summit, taking place online this fall.
Originally from northern Minnesota, Joe K. Walsh grew up in Duluth and became enthralled with the mandolin (his primary focus, currently) after hearing the first David Grisman Quintet record. His dad got the young Joe his own mando. He ended up getting very serious about the instrument and found himself studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston (where he is now on faculty in the string department). Joe, in fact, was THE FIRST mandolin student at Berklee in a town that is now flooded with amazing mandolin players. His already strong sense of community and collaboration led him to becoming a main player in the Boston scene with his string band Joy Kills Sorrow and the Gibson Brothers. He now resides in Portland, Maine and plays solo as well as with Mr. Sun, a group led by fiddler Darol Anger. In our conversation, we talk about taking over at Berklee after the death of professor John McGann, a beloved Boston trad player who recorded with David Grisman, Mark O'Connor, Tim O'Brien, and the Boston Pops, among others. Joe addresses the question of whether bringing folk music into a college setting is "academizing" it or perhaps “folking” music academia. Also he gets into hot button issues like improv, simplicity, and restraint. And, of course, he finally reveals his true feelings about the "other" Joe Walsh. Joe's new instrumental album, 'Trust and Love,' is a peaceful listen in these wild times. I'm happy to know Joe and have already benefited from his friendship! He and his wife gave my family a TON of baby hand-me-downs that have proved SO useful. Everyone has a friend in Joe. It was a weekend to forget in Portland for Conor Daly, but not by his own doing. He joins co-host Chase Holden on Speed Street this week to unpack what could have been a promising weekend but ultimately ended up being disappointing in many regards. Conor explains that after racing with Juncos Hollinger at Portland last year, the team had plenty of data to build upon, and they unloaded with a good amount of speed. An unfortunate tire mishap in qualifying buried them in the pack, but Conor was still optimistic that he could make his way forward during the race. Conor gives listeners an in depth breakdown of his on-track altercation with Christian Rasmussen and explains why he feels there are inconsistencies in how avoidable contact penalties are being issued. The race winner of the weekend Will Power joins the show to chat about how he was able to go back to back at Portland and pick up Penske's first win of the season. Will reflects on being in his contract year and not feeling sure of what the future holds with Penske. He explains that he feels he's at the peak of his driving career and hopes to continue on in a competitive seat. Conor and Will chat about the increasing aggression in IndyCar driving etiquette and how competitive the field is this season. Will describes the 2025 season as being bizarre, but the future looks bright for the IndyCar series thanks to Fox and increasing parity across the field.

xcess noise has been linked to a number of health concerns, including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and sleep disorders. But noise pollution hasn’t been well studied in the U.S., due in part to a lack of federal oversight. The Environmental Protection Agency established its Office of Noise Control and Abatement in the 1970s, but the office has remained unfunded since the early 1980s. A new study from Oregon State University aims to better understand noise pollution in Portland. Researchers found that many of the city’s neighborhoods have noise levels that are likely unhealthy. Matt Bozigar is an environmental epidemiologist and an assistant professor in OSU’s college of health. He joins us with more details.
The Pacific Northwest is known for its towering trees. Douglas-firs rank as the second highest tree species in the world and can reach heights of over 300 feet, about as tall as the Statue of Liberty. Whether chasing a bird or escaping predators like coyotes, some terrified cats get stuck high up in trees. In Oregon and Washington, arborists aid cats crying for help. The nonprofit Canopy Cat Rescue helps cats throughout Washington. The Oregon Humane Society offers a list of arborists who can safely remove cats from trees. Rick Bunch frequently helps felines in Portland and beyond. Bunch, and Tom Otto, the co-founder of Canopy Cat Rescue, join us with details.

"I love this sport and I love the people in it. I love the people I race against. I love all the fans. People are wonderful." Fresh off her U.S. Outdoor National Championships 10,000m win, fan favorite Emily Infeld returns to the Ali on the Run Show to talk about winning her first national title at age 35, 13 years into her professional career. Ten years ago, Emily made her first World Championships team, and went on to win a bronze medal in the 10,000m on the world stage. The next year, she made her first Olympic team, and competed at the Games in Rio. Then, Emily had a string of tough years and struggles, including injuries, surgeries, changing teams, changing coaches, changing locations, changing sponsors, and navigating a three-year ordeal with a stalker. Today, Emily is happy, healthy, and breaking the tape. She lives in Portland, OR, with her husband, Max. She's sponsored by Brooks, after 12 years with Nike. And she's coached once again by her college coach, Chris Miltenberg. In this conversation, Emily talks about what it took to unleash that kick in the homestretch and to break the tape at a National Championship.
