Come to a Dehoarding Accountability Zoom Session: http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/ticket Subscribe to the podcast: https://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/subscribe Podcast show notes, links and transcript: http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/  This week, I talk about what happens when I actually let myself feel the tough emotions instead of shutting them down - a pattern that's shaped my life and my struggles with hoarding, self-harm, and eating disorders. After a thought-provoking conversation with Anna Sale on Death, Sex & Money last year, I started questioning whether avoiding feelings has helped or hurt me in the long run and have been trying to process that ever since! I share what it's like to sit with big emotions, experiment with messy ways to cope, and why feeling the feelings might just be a way forward. Avoiding Feelings Realisation that I tend to do anything rather than feel difficult emotions. Recent personal reflection and processing feelings over the past few months. Impact of mental health and a PTSD flare-up on my ability to manage feelings. Connecting Coping Mechanisms to Avoidance Experience with PTSD, self-harm, anorexia, and bulimia as different forms of not feeling or avoiding emotions. Insights from an interview with Anna Sale on Death, Sex & Money that linked these coping together as forms of avoidance. Acknowledgment that these strategies were more than just avoidance - also punitive, protective, and multifaceted. The Cost and Pattern of Emotional Avoidance Compartmentalising as a lifelong coping skill and its negative long-term consequences. Difficulty breaking the habit of not feeling and the impact on my sense of identity. Recognition that suppressing feelings can be as damaging as (or more damaging than) the feelings themselves. Actively Facing and Processing Feelings Engaging in therapy, journaling (both resentful and creative/collage style), and reading poetry to access emotions. Talking more openly with friends as a supportive measure. Forcing myself to do enjoyable activities (like getting outside), which helps counteract avoidance. Community, Connection, and Support Impact of Trauma and Suppression on Daily Life How PTSD and unprocessed sadness began affecting sleep, revealing that suppressing feelings is no longer effective. Discusses the challenge of letting oneself feel emotions, both by choice and when overcome involuntarily. The risks of being overwhelmed and the delicate balance between feeling and avoidance. Learning and Conversations About Emotional Acceptance Revisiting lessons from previous podcast guests about the counterproductivity of suppressing or over-intellectualising feelings. The concept that suppressed emotions may “come out sideways” through other behaviours, like self-harm or hoarding. Nuanced view of coping mechanisms - not labeling them as purely negative since they served protective purposes. Vulnerability, Shame, and Deepening Relationships Gradual willingness to share deeper, more distressing moments with friends. Examining the reasons behind the instinct to hide intense distress. How vulnerability leads to stronger, more meaningful connections. Positive Effects of Feeling the Hard Stuff Discovering that feeling hard emotions increases the capacity to feel positive emotions more deeply. Finding deeper love, joy, and beauty in everyday experiences. Recognising the importance of support systems when exploring difficult emotions. Reflection and Encouragement for Listeners Encourages listeners to be curious about their own patterns of avoidance and coping. Cautions that intentionally feeling emotions is difficult and requires support. The hopeful observation that allowing feelings can be cathartic, gratifying, and healing—even if it's uncomfortable. Head in the Clouds or Eyes on the Prize? Mastering the Art of Daydreaming and Visualization

Encouragementology

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are delving into the intriguing realms of daydreaming and visualization. Have you ever been caught staring off into space, only to snap back to reality and wonder where your mind wandered? Or perhaps you've been told to “visualize success” but aren't quite sure how that's different from a midday reverie. You're not alone! Daydreaming and visualization may seem like mental opposites—one feels like a carefree drift down a lazy river, while the other is more like a focused GPS for your goals. But what if I told you they both have a place in your life? In this episode, we're unpacking these two mental superpowers, exploring their differences, and discovering how to balance the benefits of dreaming big and thinking strategically. Let's turn those cloud-watching moments into life-launching plans. So, grab a comfy seat, let your thoughts meander (but not too far), and let's embark on this mental adventure together! To set the stage, let's clarify what we mean by daydreaming and visualization. Daydreaming is a spontaneous and unstructured flow of thoughts that can transport you away from the present moment. It's often a way to escape boredom or entertain oneself, allowing the mind to wander freely. On the other hand, visualization is a deliberate and structured mental process where you create vivid images or scenarios in your mind to achieve a specific goal or outcome. It's commonly used in practices like sports psychology and personal development to enhance performance and manifest desired results.  Mark Morgan goes a little deeper on the definition, Visualization is Like Daydreaming on Purpose found at Neuro Tracker Barbara Field  shares 5 Positive Effects of Daydreaming found at Very Well Mind On Dr. Tracey Marks' YouTube channel, she explains Maladaptive Daydreaming vs Mind wandering – How To Tell the Difference Activity: A Two-Part Mental Experiment Let's try an exercise to really understand the difference between these two mental activities. Grab a notebook or open a notes app, and let's go: Daydreaming Phase Set a timer for five minutes. Let your mind wander freely—no rules, no restrictions. Write down any thoughts, scenarios, or ideas that pop into your head. It doesn't have to make sense or have a purpose; just let your imagination flow. Maybe you're a world-famous chef, or you're living on a tropical island with a pet monkey. Go wild! Visualization Phase Now, reset your timer for another five minutes, but this time, focus on something you want to achieve. Picture it in as much detail as possible. What does success look like? How do you feel? What steps are you taking to make it happen? Write down the specifics of this visualization. Reflection: After the exercise, take a look at your notes. Your daydreams might feel playful, random, or even a little absurd, while your visualization notes should feel structured and goal-oriented. Notice how both have value—one sparks creativity and freedom, and the other drives focus and motivation. Bonus Insight: If you find yourself daydreaming too much when you're trying to visualize, that's okay! Your mind just needs a little training. Try grounding techniques like deep breathing or focusing on a specific object to bring yourself back to the present and regain control. This simple experiment helps you tune into how your mind works and gives you a clear sense of when to let it wander and when to focus it with purpose. It's not about choosing one over the other—it's about learning to use both effectively, like switching gears in a car. Sometimes, you need to cruise; other times, you've got to put the pedal to the metal! CHALLENGE: Harness the power of your mind by distinguishing between when to let it wander and when to focus it with intent. Embrace both daydreaming and visualization as tools to enrich your life and propel you toward your goals.   I Know YOU Can Do It!

One of the trends in the world of marketing is people try to create a place where everything's available. That's the idea of the modern mall, the idea behind 7-11, they try to figure out exactly what people need and then they put it all in one place. So, Kṛṣṇa has done that for us. Everything that's necessary or consumable anywhere within the three worlds is available in one place—that's through Japa. But you don't have to drive there and get it; actually, you don't have to go far—you just have to sit down anywhere and you can get it. So, it's one thing to keep in mind because the mind gets restless, thinking that it wants something else and it's available somewhere else. But if we become acquainted with actual clear philosophy that everything's available in one place, at the root, at the center cause, then we can reassure our minds that you don't have to go anywhere else because you're not going to, you're just going to lose your place in line—just stay here. And the other concept I'll talk about in a minute, but we can remember that everything's available. As Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says, there's nothing else to be had in the fourteen worlds except the holy name. So keep that in mind if your mind wants to go shopping elsewhere—we already have the one-stop shopping The shastras, and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu emphasized so strongly how everything's included in the holy name. So that it's one time when we're chanting—it's not the one time—but we can give ourselves full permission while we're chanting to not think about going somewhere else. This is one of the ways to have successful japa: is to not divert the mind and go anywhere else. And if we're convinced that the holy name is all-inclusive—that everything I'm looking for is available in The Holy Name, it's cintāmaṇi—if I just stay in touch with the holy name, then I'll be transformed in a way that will be favorable. It's what everyone's looking for.
