Progress as of 8/14- 58 x70 inches (14x20 hexis) My goal is for it to be twin blanket size which is 60x80 inches. I would need to add 2 more rows to the length= 28 hexis to make, wash and seam. My friend Liz was walking around sightseeing on a recent trip to St. Louis and mentioned she may need a water bottle holder like the one I made for Hattie (Ravelry Project Page). Wild Air Farm Spinning I am spinning a 4 oz braid of Polwarth/Silk (85/15) from Jakira Farms to ply with Wild Air Farm Shetland & Pygora- Melody & Cadence (dyed in blues and greens) Ravelry Project Page Note: Some links are listed as Amazon Affiliate Links. Brainstorming I'd like to crochet a pocket to put between the mattress and the platform part of our bed. I sleep with my heating pad nearly every night and depending on how I move, and especially when I get out of bed, the controller for the heating pad clangs loudly against the wooden drawers and metal drawer pulls of the platform bed. I'd like to hold several strands together and make a large piece of fabric with a pocket in it, to hold the controller and muffle the sound. I need to go through my stash to see what I can find. I will likely crochet it for the sake of time and I think it will also yield a denser fabric that will work well without hurting my hands too much. Dyers: Jasmin and I did come up with colors theme for this KAL/CAL: purple, green, blue, golden yellow, and black. We are encouraging all those participating to use any/all of these colors for your sweater. We are asking #bipocdyers to use these colors to create your inspired colorways for this KAL/CAL. We have a link that we are using that can choose your color palette shade from the colors we listed above. We really hope you all can join us in the KAL/CAL. We can’t wait to look on instagram and see the progress everyone is making and we will see you all at Rhinebeck with your sweaters on! This is what it’s all about. I knit one back in 2011 for my cousin Bella In My Travels I gave an overview of my 10 day trip to Barcelona, Spain and Portugal Packing in a carry-on for 10 Days 3 pairs pants- black and grey leggings & 1 pair jeans 8 shirts vest with hood denim jacket 1 handknit shawl & 1 cotton scarf sneakers, shortie boots and slide sneakers. Socks, underwear 1 pair of sleep shorts too cold to wear- slept in leggings I had plenty of clothing. Washed clothes at my friend's house on Friday before we went to Porto. Could have done w/ fewer shirts but it was nice to have variety. Wish I had wool socks for bed. Lessons Learned Didn’t need my shortie boots. Sneakers and casual sneakers would have been sufficient. Denim jacket and vest were good to mix and match & good layering options. Loved having my prescription sunglasses! I could bring less jewelry if I plan to buy some. I never understood the point of packing cubes- but my mom sent some over and I'm sold. They really do compress things more than I thought possible and kept my small suitcase organized. Overall Travel Highlights & Safety Tips Booked 3 apartments in the 2 cities through AirBnB all worked out great! Booked 2 excursions in Spain through them - 3 hour Bike Tour & Paella Making Experience Separate beds/rooms meant that I didn't get Laura's cold. Clean out your wallet before you leave. Take photos of what’s in your wallet in case it’s stolen. My wallet stolen before we got to our first apartment. Because it was fast and easy to call and cancel, the thieves didn't get in any charges on my cards. I had new cards & a license by the time I returned home Carry wallet and passport on your person during airport and train travel. Always zip your purse. Keep passport separate from wallet. Was happy I packed Airborne & my water bottle. It was easy to fill and carry (saved me money too). Downloading google map of city in advance was a huge win. You can find your blue dot on map even without WiFi. WiFi in lots of places. Cafes, restaurants etc. makes traveling without cell service possible. Carry-on suitcase was plenty to manage through cobblestone streets and many flights of stairs in metro stations. I might have thought of bringing a larger suitcase if it were "free" but that would have been a bad idea. Brought external battery back up for phone. Used at least most days. My phone was in airplane mode except for 2 small needs for cellular. But I used it to take lots of photos. Internet and apps on WiFi as needed. Bought European 220 plug that supports 2 usb cords which worked for all of the electronics I needed to charge. Worked well but I didn't like that it lights up green when plugged in. Not good if want to charge phone by bed. Barcelona The bike tour and paella making class were huge highlights We visited All You Knit Is Love Yarn shop. I bought a skein of Murmur yarn & 2 50gram skeins of Hjertegarn. Sagrada Família. Passion facade done this time! First time went in. Breathtaking! Visited Montserrat. Audio of boys choir at end. Porto Love the street art in Porto. Loved that Porto is so walkable. Can’t get too lost. Loved small winding streets with bright colors and laundry hanging. First AirBnB gave us really great recommendations. Ora Viva= favorite restaurant. You can easily hop on a river cruise. They sell tickets right down by the river. Cable cars/ gondola brings you to top of bridge. Fun ride! Fun with Laura taking photos Graham’s port wine tour. Knitting No trouble with metal or bamboo circulars in any airline. The shawl project & one pair of socks was plenty for a busy trip of sightseeing, knowing I'd buy some more yarn there. The boys loved the giraffes I crocheted for them. Marta’s oldest made me a sign that said "Welcome Home" in English and had a drawing of a girl in a giraffe costume like the stuffy I made Aila for Christmas that he saw in my Instagram feed. If you're traveling, consider bringing an FO you want great photos of. KAL News Slay the Stash 2019 Each month you can declare a skein of yarn to knit/crochet/weave to its very end. Garter Stitch edges offset by the lace in the center. i-cord edging gives the edge a very polished look and bonus, there's not a single purl stitch in the shawl. The design of the shawl is inspired by the relationship I have with my best friend, Kris. She often compares us to Grace & Frankie (from the Netflix original series)- best friends who love and need each other but on the surface have nothing in common. You'll see that play out in the shawl where the openness of the lace is offset by the solid fabric of the garter stitch—completely different types of stitches and fabric that complement each other well. Click here for all of the details. The Grace & Frankie Shawl is available for $6 on Ravelry. If you signed up for my newsletter you already got an early bird special discount. Next up Riley Rose Hat. I focus on just making sure I make progress on one thing a day. That’s right you heard me, just one thing a day that matters to me. Now, if I can make progress on one thing a day that matters to me, then I can let go and let the rest of my day get hijacked by kids, by my spouse, by phone calls, by emails, by social media, by all kinds of things that come up and tend to hijack your day when you are a busy person.” – Mel Robbins ------ Thank you for tuning in! It is on sale for only $3 until 4/21 (no coupon code required)- after that it will go up to the regular price of $6. Jean Marie is a top-down half-hexagon shawl designed for 3 colors of Ross Farm Sport weight yarn. It uses simple knit, purl and slipped stitches to create three distinct textures- one for each color. The result is a very wearable, warm shawl that sits nicely on the shoulders. It is also great for use with commercial or handspun yarn in a single solid, tonal or variegated yarn. You can easily use Sport or DK weight! Ask me Anything This episode I answered a question from SewRunKnit about how to photograph FOs late at night before a KAL deadline. First tip would be-- take the best photo you can without killing yourself. Consider more of a proof of life so you're eligible for the contest and then after you post- delete those photos so you HAVE to take a better photo in the daylight. Natural light photos always come out best, especially if your photography skills are limited. But if you do have to shoot inside your house at midnight when the lighting is dim at best- here are my best tips: Find the best possible light your house has to offer. Try to find a lighter background to shoot agains Shoot straight at your FO instead of looking down on it, if possible. If using DSLR Camera (some require a built-in flash) Shoot in Aperture priority mode- and look for a low F stop number. Raise your ISO-. You may need a tripod or self timer because shake from hand can ruin the shot. Sometimes this is still really tricky and if we're going for simple it may not be your best bet. Use a flash but diffuse the light. Some options: Use the flash with tissue over it Hold a white index card/paper at a 45 degree angle in front of your flash, and take your shot. The light should hit the card, bounce to the ceiling, and spread out the light. Cut a water bottle and place over flash to diffuse light DIY diffuser tutorial Pop-up flash tips If using your smart phone to take photos Tap screen to focus, picking the darkest area. The camera should adjust and brighten it up some. Find a better camera app. I like the Camera Plus app. It allows you to adjust the brightness. On a Happy Note Easter with my big, crazy family was tons of fun, especially the egg hunt with the kiddos. Lunch with Holli with Qdoba! Date night Dan at a new local restaurant My Aunt Florence's 90th brithday! Starting #the100dayproject with Kris. Therefore, to be furious and enraged and bitter that people don't get all of who we are is a really cruel piece of immaturity." Alain De Botton ------ Thank you for tuning in! Episode 10 – 5/16/17 - we’ve hit double digits! Considering I’ve listened to podcasts since 2005, and have listened to a few for 10+ years, it seems a little silly to be celebrating 10 episodes but to me if someone reaches the 10 episode mark then it shows they are in it for the long run and to me, I’m more likely to start listening to them. Welcome to our new international listeners! New listeners from Canada, Bievenue! I suspect I’m related to most of you, lol, I’m half Canadian. Also Australia, Germany, Sweden and India! Wilkomen! Tak! Dhanyabad – ok, that last was Nepali, not Hindi, but I speak Nepali (or used to). Languages are a hobby of mine so forgive me for geeking out about listeners abroad. Ask Me Anything I answered a question from cynalune on Ravelry about my dream knitting bag. My favorite purse currently I purchase from this shop on Etsy. Hear more about my 2 bag system for commuting to work via train on Episode 93. On a Happy Note My cousin's bachelorette party in Provincetown (Cape Cod). Favorite places: Patio (went to lunch with Mom), Boat Slip Beach Club Tea Dance (4-7p) MGH Diversity Statement- came through on my work email and I was so touched by it. Because of diversity we will excel. We think broadly about diversity and everything that makes us unique. It is core to our mission. Our differences make the MGH a more interesting and distinctive environment in which to work and are an important means of providing the very best care to every one of our patients, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religion, age, sexual orientation, disabilities, life experiences, geographic backgrounds, skills and talents among others. We will not excel without recognizing and appreciating everyone’s perspectives. Through inclusion we will respect. Together we work hard to make this hospital a diverse and inclusive place of healing. Encouraging a broad range of opinions, ideas and perspectives drives creativity, innovation and excellence. Our continued engagement in our nationally recognized initiatives and programs highlights our commitment to diversity and inclusion. But this ongoing work will not be complete until every employee, every patient, every family member, every visitor feels safe, respected, welcome, comfortable, supported and accepted within our walls. Focused on equity we will serve, heal, educate and innovate. Our job is to improve health and save lives, regardless of what our patients or colleagues look like, where they come from, what they believe, or who they love. Issues of equity and justice are not separate but rather intertwined with patient care, education, research, and community health. Targeting inequality enhances the quality of care for all. We believe in treating our patients and each other with the dignity that every human being deserves. Meeting up with new friends at Gather Here in Cambridge, MA for knit night. Bathing suits that fit from Athleta. Rash guard love. Pacifica (long sleeved version) Not so happy- water in our well is low because of the summer drought. Good news is that we're finding ways to conserve water and hopefully are building in some better long-term routines.

On a Happy Note I went to see Vertical Horizon’s free concert in the Boston Common with Lisa, and her son and daughter. Really fun night. It was hot but the show was great, forgot how much I loved their music. And we knit! Aila and Will slept over the weekend of the 16-17th so parents can finish some renovation work at their house. Pool day Sat and Sunday! Sunday afternoon went to a cookout at my Nana’s assisted living facility. Knit and listened to the music. Fun! Knitting definitely helped what could have been an otherwise boring function. Aila left Giraffe Mommy- her prized possession- at our house. I came home and found her. Told Kris I’d send lots of photos of GM and me having fun so A would know she was ok. Dinner, showers, reading, made her a tent to sleep in, snuggles, riding the train, going to work. set up her own little office. Went to the craft store and then taught her to crochet so she could make a dress. Aila called Monday night when she got back from a trip with her grandmother, sad about it. Told me all of Giraffe Mommy's favorite things so I’d know. Very sweet. Brought her back on Tuesday. Wednesday night I went to Will and Aila’s track meet where we did a mini birthday celebration for Will before they left for vacation. I gave him the Rhino I had intended for Christmas! Finally scored a sock blank from Andre Sue Knits on Etsy Mom found a photo of a dress she made when she was in her early 20's that she wore to her Bridal Shower. She handed it down to me and its my favorite item of clothing! Was fun to have a photo of her wearing it.
