Tom is a PILLAR -- there is no doubt.  With Tom's vim and vigor, guts and gumption we give the Salty Dog Classic it's proper due.  We talk about the history of the tourney and about fathers & sons and about Peyton (our young man from the Washington Jesuit Academy whom we sponsor) and about the tourney's future and about GENERATIONS -- how important are the stories of those who come before us -- and how important it is for them to be told.  We can both see a PILLARS project ahead!!!Thank you, Tom, for your passion -- you inspire.  And what started with me doing the talking quickly turned to Tom doing the hosting and me trying to do good with the telling of the salty tale of the DOG!!!  Tom, you are a good host -- what a pleasant & important conversation we had -- thank you!!!BE A PILLAR!!!

US CLASSIC Simone Biles officially debuted the Yurchenko double pike. We discuss how awesome it is, and Spencer has 84 things to say about the D score. What Tom Forster, US High Performance Coordinator, said when Jessica asked if USAG would fight the low D score given to Simone's vault. Simone gave credit to both of her coaching teams. She's been doing the Yurchenko double pike for over ten years (see our interview in 2013), first with Aimee Boorman and now competing it with Cecile and Laurent Landi. Jordan Chiles went 57+ again. Is she an Olympic lock? Can anyone stop the reliability of bars champion Kayla DiCello? OUTSPOKEN GROWN ASS WOMEN ADULTS - Simone, Morgan Hurd and MyKayla Skinner do not hold back in interviews "The way Marta did things, it was kinda brutal and it didn't need to be that way. With Tom and the rest of the team, it's a growing experience, but the changes have been really good. Tom is so supportive. It's so weird having a relationship with a national coach." - MyKayla Skinner "I don't think I'd be able to do elite gymnastics now if Marta was here. In some ways it's been a lot nicer not having her around. With consistency, though, she was good at making us hit under pressure. Since Simone and I have that experience, we can help the younger generation." - MyKayla Skinner On her activism as a world champion regularly demonstrating at Black Lives Matter protests and anti-asian hate rallies,  "I have to give credit to the brave survivors who paved the way and opened the floor for me to use my voice. These are much bigger than gymnastics. If gymnastics disappeared tomorrow, these issues would still be there. I'm a person first, and a gymnast second." - Morgan Hurd ,who also added when speaking about losing followers on social media because of her opinions, "I don't need people who don't think human rights are a given to be supporting me." Chellsie Memmel competed! We're very excited, and even more excited to see her at nationals. Riley McCusker's injury — what happened there? ‘Cancel culture Britain’ continues. With ‘Tom and Jerry’ banned from our screens, the plays of William Shakespeare are under scrutiny because of works such as the ‘Taming of the Shrew’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Othello’ and the capacity of the Bard to offend. And of course, Sir Winston Churchill. Where once tourists made a pilgrimage to his statue in Parliament Square, we now question whether he is a villain or a hero. But surely he can be both. Had it not been for him, we might be speaking to you in German and we would definitely not be speaking to our guest, journalist Ramsha Khan, at all. She has written an article in Spiked Online this week in defence of Winston Churchill and his reputation, giving an alternative perspective. So, we spoke to her from her home in Pakistan. As a glimmer of light seems to be shining through a truly horrific year, there are many tragic real-life stories behind the daily statistics. There are also many genuinely uplifting stories too. At the beginning of this emergency, PPE was hard to come by and not always of the highest standards. Battling with black-market traders and extortionate prices, Mask Our Heroes set about sourcing masks from across the world. We have heard of many heroic deeds during this pandemic, with Captain Sir Tom raising millions of pounds for charity, to many others working quietly behind the scenes. One of the latter is Tamer Hassan, a tough-guy actor with a golden heart. He came onto Sputnik to tell us about his work with Mask Our Heroes and how they still continue to distribute much needed PPE across the country.

Tom Szaky is the founder and CEO of Terracycle, an innovative waste management company on a mission to make a difference in the world by improving our global waste problem. With Tom's entrepreneurial mindset, he developed innovative programs to help consumers and businesses recycle (and upcycle) difficult to recycle products such as coffee capsules and toothbrushes.   Key Takeaways: Tom provides insight on how most items are recyclable, but it often comes down to economics. Big businesses could potentially lose money from recycling and it is cheaper for them to forgo recycling altogether. TerraCycle works to secure funding from brands, manufacturers and retailers in order to develop free recycling programs for the public. TerraCycle work to integrate waste back into new products, for example creating new packaging for products out of plastic found in our oceans and waterways. TerraCycle is working with local brands in Australia to get them to recycle their own packaging through a model called Loop. Woolworths will be one of the first companies to participate in the program. Not all glass and plastic are made equal. When choosing a product, try to choose glass that isn’t coloured (easier to recycle) and rigid plastics over soft plastics. When recycling a coloured product (like a coloured plastic shampoo bottle or a dark amber glass beer bottle), these materials can ONLY be recycled into a new item of the same or a darker colour. Nourished Life has partnered with TerraCycle to provide the option for customers to return their used product packaging to be recycled. Send your empty products to Nourished Life such as toothpaste tubes and we will send to TerraCycle to be recycled.   Links and resources: https://www.nourishedlife.com.au/terracycle.html https://www.terracycle.com/en-AU Connect: Listen to other episodes of Talking Clean with Irene Join my private podcast Facebook Group Follow Nourished Life on Facebook Follow Nourished Life on Instagram

Emma & Tom's PGCE Podcast

In an unfortunate quirk of the episode schedule, we were originally going to put out a lovely episode about our community of international students who travel to Wales to train as teachers here. But that just seemed like adding insult to injury when we’re all confined to our homes by the global Covid-19 pandemic, so we’ve postponed the release of that episode and cobbled together a lockdown special for you to enjoy, if enjoy is the right word. With Tom sitting in a deserted university campus and Emma speaking down-the-line from her house, we discuss the very sudden transition of educational institutions to remote learning approaches. What can we realistically expect to achieve as teachers in this new environment, and how do we keep a critical eye when investigating the huge flood of resources that have been kindly made available by individuals and institutions as a response to the global lockdown? We’re assisted by a blog post from the mighty Tom Sherrington which gives lots of practical advice to those grappling with a new way of working. With many of us wondering whether we might have more time to read, reflect and ponder the big educational questions, we also bring you a discussion of a chapter of Mary Myatt’s book The Curriculum: Gallimaufry to Coherence which started off as a remote-learning resource for our students before being repackaged for our podcast audience. We’ll do our best to keep our normal service going as much as possible, and hope all our listeners and their families and friends are keeping safe and well.

Tom Shadyac was the hugely successful Hollywood director of such films as Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, The Nutty Professor, Bruce Almighty and Patch Adams. Then in 2007 he moved out of his 17,000-foot mansion and into — surprise! — a mobile home. He began giving away his income. The luxuries of his former lifestyle had taught him one thing: "I was no happier," he says. Not long after, he was hit on the head during a bike accident and suffered from debilitating post-concussion syndrome. This last physical struggle gave him the courage to talk about why he made such a drastic change as well as the courage to direct the groundbreaking documentary "I Am" - which examines the troubling question, "What's wrong with our world—and what can we do about?" ... And to capture this exploration in his book, "Life’s Operating Manual: with the Fear and Truth Dialogues" - in which Tom answers another simple yet provocative question: "Is it possible that life comes with set of guidelines - an operating manual?"... like just about everything today — from your computer to your car, from your cell phone to your iPad? As Julie Ann's guest on ConsciousSHIFT, Tom shares what he has discovered about "Life's Operating Manual" - and argues that we can discern what is written inside of this operating guide and find the courage to live in accordance with its precepts.Tom explores nature, history and philosophy, and opens our eyes to one underlying principle that should guide the human race: love. This single principle is, in essence, our operating manual . . . and its instructions are very simple. The question is, do we have the courage to live in accordance with this precept — to step away from how society currently works and the ills we experience because of it? Do we have the fortitude to change and cast aside the ideas that have led to war, poverty, genocide, and environmental destruction? With Tom’s inspiring vision of what the world can be and the straightforward advice he shares on ConsciousSHIFT about how to move toward it, your answer to these questions will be a resounding yes.Join Julie Ann and Tom for this thought-provoking, life-expanding exploration!
