Flying to Canada? Essential Travel Tips & Customs Info

Traveling to Canada? Know what to pack, what to declare, and what to expect at customs. Smart travel starts here! What to Know Before Flying to Canada Traveling internationally—especially to Canada—requires a bit more preparation than domestic trips. Whether it's your first time or you're a seasoned traveler, here's what you should know before you board. Entry Requirements and Canadian Customs Tips Valid Passport: Make sure your passport is current and valid for the entire duration of your stay. U.S. travelers don't need a visa for visits under six months. ArriveCAN App: Travelers are encouraged to use the ArriveCAN app to provide customs and immigration information ahead of time. What to Declare: Be honest—declare all food, alcohol, and goods. Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) takes violations seriously. Duties and Limits: Know your duty-free allowances. Canadians returning home have specific exemptions for goods and alcohol, which vary by time spent abroad. What to Pack for a Smooth Trip Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Canada's weather can vary dramatically. Layers are key! Travel Documents: Keep your passport, boarding pass, and ArriveCAN receipt handy with an electronic copy on your phone. Remember to file your “Customs Declaration” within 72 hours of departure on airlines for faster customs processing. Electronics & Adapters: Canada uses 120V (same as the U.S.), so most electronics are compatible. Health & Insurance Info: It's smart to travel with proof of insurance and any necessary prescriptions. It is highly recommended that prescriptions are in original bottles from the pharmacy. If those bottles are large, advise the pharmacy of international travel and ask for smaller labelled bottles with enough for the “planned” trip as well as an extra week's supply incase of an emergency. Stay Connected on the Go Cellular Carrier: When flying internationally even if just over the border it is extremely important to contact your cell phone carrier (Example: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint) to verify if your plan covers all of the countries that will be visited. Roaming fees are expensive. If your plan does NOT cover, for example Canada, ask for a “Travel Pass” to be added to your cell phone or data plan which are typically significantly cheaper than roaming fees. Consider a Canadian SIM card or an international roaming plan to stay in touch during your trip.  Wi-Fi & Internet: Free Wi-Fi is common in airports, cafes, and hotels, but rural areas may have limited service. To avoid “Roaming Charges” always place the phone on “Airplane Mode”, connect to the available Wi-Fi, and change the final setting to enable “Wi-Fi Calling.” No Roaming Fees: To be absolutely sure that you are not on roaming data, after putting phone / tablet on “Airplane Mode” with “Wi-Fi” connect. Consider using apps such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Facetime or Google Meet to stay connected with others. OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you! In this episode of the Structure Talk podcast, the hosts welcome special guest Mike Casey, an experienced home inspector and educator. The conversation focuses on the topics of grounding and bonding in electrical systems. Mike explains that grounding connects the system to the Earth, maintaining a reference of 120 volts to the ground and providing a path for current to flow in the event of a lightning strike or other overvoltage occurrences. Bonding, on the other hand, connects metal components together that have the potential to be energized, ensuring that current has a path back to the source and preventing people from being in the path of a potential circuit. The hosts and Mike discuss the importance of proper bonding and grounding in various systems, such as pools, CSST, and detached buildings. They also address the changes in electrical code regarding bonding and grounding requirements. In this conversation, Reuben Saltzman and Mike Casey discuss the importance of bonding in electrical systems. They cover topics such as bonding gas piping, water distribution piping, and metal ductwork. They also touch on the bonding of metal siding and soffits. Mike emphasizes the need for proper bonding to ensure safety and prevent potential hazards. They also discuss the role of grounding electrode systems and the importance of understanding electrical theory. Mike recommends consulting an electrician or a knowledgeable home inspector for proper grounding and bonding inspections.TakeawaysGrounding connects the electrical system to the Earth, maintaining a reference of 120 volts to the ground and providing a path for current in the event of overvoltage occurrences.Bonding connects metal components together that have the potential to be energized, ensuring that current has a path back to the source and preventing people from being in the path of a potential circuit.Proper bonding and grounding are essential for safety and preventing damage to electrical systems and appliances.Changes in electrical code require separate paths for neutral current and equipment grounding and the use of four-conductor feeders for appliances with both 240V and 120V components.Specialized grounding requirements exist for systems like CSST and pools, and it is important to follow the specific guidelines for each system to ensure safety and compliance. Proper bonding is essential in electrical systems to ensure safety and prevent potential hazards.Gas piping, water distribution piping, and metal ductwork should be bonded to prevent potential energization and protect against electrical shocks.Metal siding and soffits do not require bonding.Understanding grounding electrode systems and electrical theory is crucial for proper bonding and grounding inspections.Consulting an electrician or knowledgeable home inspector is recommended for proper grounding and bonding inspections.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Eclipse Experience06:10 Grounding and Bonding: Definitions and Purposes14:07 The Difference Between Grounding and Bonding29:31 The Role of Electricians in Verifying Proper Bonding39:02 Bonding Metal Ductwork50:12 Understanding Grounding Electrode Systems

Pleb Miner in the Wild Travis Bitckle   Listen you fuckers, you screw heads, here is a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the central bankers, the cunts, the dogs of war, the filth that is the global elite, the shit who devalue our currency, and steal the fruits of our labor. Here is someone who stood up and took Bitcoin Mining into his own hands. Here is, Travis Bitckle, Pleb Miner in the Wild.   Travis is a Pleb Miner extraordinaire, a mad scientist tinkerer and a hell of a nice guy. He has built many iterations of home mining setups. His most common build is an AC Infinity fan cooled miner, coupled to the rig via a Fruits and Associates Fan Shroud and a Njord Board from Pivotal Pleb Tech. (If you'd like to hear the story of Zack Bomsta and the Njord Board check out Zack's Pleb Miner in the Wild interview)   Travis' newest build is a single board, 120v build, with a custom housing, fan design, and the use of Zack Bomsta's Loki Kit.   Travis wrote an article detailing the custom build. It can be viewed on our website. Travis' 120V miner build on Ungovernable Misfits.   Travis and Jon take the conversation is a few different directions, from automotive topics, specifically related to Volkswagen (VW) Diesel engines, turbocharging, and the use of vegetable oil as dual fuel. Here's some more information on alternative fuel diesel engines from US Filter Maxx. They also discuss alternative sources of energy for Bitcoin mining like bio digesters and what the University of Wisconsin is doing in that area.   They discuss their early political leanings, ranging from anarchy/punk to more conservative ideologies, neo-conservatism, and libertarianism.    The conversation ends with a quote from Mr. Rogers about the importance of those who have cared for and shaped us throughout our lives. Travis wanted to share a special thanks to his wife, mother of his children, washer of his underwear, and the one who has loved him into the successful person and pleb miner he is today. Thanks Travis' wife and thank you to all our loved ones who suffer through our Bitcoin mania. We love you all.   “All of us have special ones that have loved us into being, would you just take along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are” “those who have cared about you and wanted what was best for you in life” – Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers).   Show Sponsor - Foundation Devices   Foundation builds Bitcoin-centric tools that empower you to reclaim your digital sovereignty. This week on EYE ON NPI, we are keeping an eye on safety with Infineon's ‎170 W AC-DC Charger Design for E-bikes and Power Tools (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/infineon/170-w-ac-dc-charger-design-for-e-bikes-and-power-tools) featuring the Infineon XDPS2201XUMA1 (https://www.digikey.com/short/h3qfmvc0) digital flyback controller and Infineon IPA60R280P7SXKSA1 (https://www.digikey.com/short/cfvp4f82) 600 Volt, 12 Amp N-Channel power MOSFET. These two best buddies can join forces to help you quickly and safely charge big battery packs such as in e-Bikes and other micro-mobility devices (https://wagner.nyu.edu/rudincenter/areas-focus/micromobility). If you live near any density of folks, and in a place with well-paved roads, you've certainly noticed the increase in e-Bikes, e-Scooters, mono-wheels and other electric 'person-movers'. In NYC we've seen these go from banned to bountiful, as COVID restrictions made food and grocery delivery a bigger business than ever (https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/01/a-simple-solution-for-getting-cars-off-the-road-right-now.html). They're also popular in lots of countries where folks may not be able to afford cars, motorcycles or even mopeds: an entry-level E-Bike can go for $1000 to $3000 - which is a lot of money but much less expensive than a car. Plus you don't have to pay for gas or parking, you can lock it up outside or in your yard and charge it over a 120V power plug. But, about that charging setup ... these light vehicles (https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/applications/automotive/light-vehicles/) use very big batteries: a common 48V 250 Watt-hours is 26 18650 sized batteries connected in series - with extremely high discharge pulses necessary if you want to haul around a 75 lb bicycle plus a 200 lb cargo of human plus groceries. Also important is the ability to charge quickly. If you're using the e-Bike for a courier job, or you take it work, and you need to charge it in order to get back home, you don't want to wait around 16 hours. But that also means that bicycles are often charged unattended, and that could mean that a poor engineering job on the charging circuit can lead to tragedy (https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/07/e-bike-battery-lithium-ion-fire/674622/). So don't cheap out on your design, and don't try to invent high power electronics layouts and specifications when you can rely on experts who've already done the work and created a reference you can base your product on (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/infineon/170-w-ac-dc-charger-design-for-e-bikes-and-power-tools) https://www.digikey.com/short/h3qfmvc0 #adafruit #eyeonnpi #digikey

Quantum Quote: “Rule #1: do the right thing. Rule #2: do the best you can in the time you have. Rule #3: treat other people the way you want to be treated.” – Lou Holtz Heating hot water is 15-20% of the average family's energy consumption, costing $400 to $800 a year or more. Most people face hindrances in having an energy efficient water heater because of their high initial cost of installation, warranties, and replacements. With new hot water heaters coming out next year with Torii, you can finally have a highly energy-efficient water heater that will also be reused and recycled. A highly efficient induction coil will heat Torii's graphite foam core to 500 degrees Fahrenheit in just three seconds, using two to three times less energy than the average hot water heater, and providing a LOT of energy and financial cost savings. Torii is creating a subscription water heating service that will cover 100% of your installation, maintenance, and replacement costs. And, their advanced technology will let you know what's going on with your water pressure, temperature, inflow, and usage through an app or web interface filled with all the sensors and information you'll ever need. Their technology will also allow the water heater to talk to the grid and reduce energy usage during peak demand periods- providing a way for you to create additional cost savings.   About 80% of 5000 water heaters wind up in landfills every day. Because water heaters have metals that do not easily decompose, this is a terrifying contribution to Earth's shortening life span. Don't you want to join Torii as they reuse and recycle water heaters and not allow toxic metals to ruin the planet we live in? Check out this interview with Torii Industries' Co-Founder / COO – John Hynds. John Hynds was born in Long Island, New York, and raised in Clearwater, Florida. He has lived  and worked in twenty countries.  Upon graduating high school, John entered the United States Marine Corps. After the Marines, John followed his passion for technology and for 30 years has been involved in high tech. John completed the 2020 Acton School of Business, Austin, TX. Following another of his passions, John opened one of the first low carbohydrate food stores in the country, the LoCarb Outlet, learning firsthand what it's like to build a business from scratch.   John has served in senior leadership roles in sales and engineering organizations, in startups, and in multinationals.  John created two patents, one personally and one professionally. Along his career journey, John has donated his time and leadership to organizations that directly serve the poor.  Helping co-found Torii Industries, John has the unique ability to visualize the future, speak to that vision, and most importantly, create practical steps to achieving goals. As COO at Torii Industries, John enhances business strategies and helps steer the company through the ever-changing energy technology landscape.  Sign up for a free webclass to discover how easy it is to get ultra-efficient geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home – without the pain of emptying your savings account.   In “The Power Of Earth With Comfort” From Climate Master webclass, you'll discover the answers every homeowner needs to know, including:   How geothermal heating and cooling can draw energy from the ground beneath our feet (for pennies) Why homeowners everywhere are making the switch The secrets to securing utility incentives and tax credits to pay for a large portion of your new geothermal system and much more…   If you are tired of rising energy costs and want to save up to 70% on your energy bills, Go to www.AWESomeEarthKind.com and register now for this FREE special event that will show you exactly how to get geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home. The most immediate climate issue that's on the table RIGHT NOW is passing the Build Back Better Act - the largest piece of climate legislation that's ever been proposed in the history of our country. That single bill will put us on track to meet - and even exceed - our goals, which is hugely important and necessary if we want life on this planet to continue. Multiply your climate impact by a factor of 1,000 with #CodeRedClimate & CodeRedCongress.com  (https://coderedcongress.com/)   SuperNova #1. Don't be afraid to bring your ideas to the table and present and defend them, but then listen to the counterpoints – to the arguments – and get int0 the discussion. There's a phrase I love; “Prefer clarity to agreement.” When you're clear, there's no resistance to the message. When you're trying to understand, there's no resistance. It allows you to take things differently and deeper. Then you can actually change your mind. If everybody just brings their ideas in order to be clear, that's fantastic. I think that has really helped navigate different barriers and ways to get around them.   SuperNova #2. Don't ever have a firm plan. Start out with something, go for it 100%, but learn along the way and make the appropriate changes.   SuperNova #3. “Water is at its most dense just before it freezes, not when it freezes like other things. It actually becomes less dense when it's frozen - that's why ice floats. Had ice not been that way, this planet would be a chunk of ice; it all would have frozen from the bottom up. We wouldn't be here if water didn't act this way, and it's the only thing in the universe that does.”    Aha Moment: “A standard water heater is 240V on a 30/40/50A circuit. A few months ago, our Engineer was running the prototype with a tuned induction coil and they were able to run our system at 120V on a 15A standard house current. So we were there!” – John Hynds    Best Advice He's Ever Received: “Before I went in the Marine Corps, my cousin looked at me and said ‘You know, don't let them change you. You have a great sense of humor. It's something really important in life.' I never thought I would remember him saying that, but I realized how important that is to just be you, no matter where you are.” – John Hynds   Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “Tell the truth. On the flip side of that is I really expect that from other people. It's a very debilitating thing when folks aren't truthful. So I try to keep that foremost in front of me and expect that from other folks.” – John Hynds   Internet Resource: Torii Industries   Book Recommendation: Life's Matrix: A Biography of Water   Magic Wand: “That everyone would be able to understand other people's perspectives. I've travelled a lot in about 20 different countries. I think the biggest thing is to understand other people  - or at least have a perception of walking in their shoes.” – John Hynds   WTF or F: “I love weather. Growing up in Florida, when I would hear there's a tornado watch, I would shimmy up our TV antenna – which they used to have back in the day on a house – and sit up there with my binoculars, sometimes in the pouring rain. The very first time I saw a waterspout forming over Tampa Bay – maybe not even 15 miles from the house – and watched this funnel cloud come down. As soon as it touched the water, the funnel on the whole sky turned black. The enormity of the power of that event hit me. A tornado is not a swirling wind; it's enormously destructive. The amount of power just watching that happen blew me away.  I was probably 12 or 13 years old.” – John Hynds   Most Energized About Today: “Torii Industries.. I really think we can start a big change for people. We are starting with water heaters and we are going to expand in the home and do what we can to help optimize other appliances. There's a lot of room for growth. I'm excited about the technology, the energy, and creating a business model that I think is fair. It's going to help the end user save money over time. It's going to help the plumbers be engaged with that end user and become a partner. Being part of Torii, we can help facilitate that.” – John Hynds   Next Step: “Currently, we've got prototypes built and we're tuning and tweaking those. When we get what we believe is our final prototype,, we'll be going to get UL and Green certifications. By this time next year, we should be shipping product. We're currently in our seed funding round right now, talking to investors to move the company along, and it's going pretty well.” – John Hynds   Parting Advice: “Never stop learning. Never stop growing. Things don't always work out the way you want, but keep trying and moving forward”. – John Hynds   Connect: Website: https://toriiway.com/ LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/company/torii-industries

Technology is evolving with increasing demand for capacitors as we enter a new era, but as creatures of habit how can we mitigate the resistance to change and ensure manufacturing production can keep up? While some engineering challenges may be solved by compute today, manufacturing and supply chain challenges require change management leadership to build a solid foundation to scale manufacturing. Tune in to this episode of Real Talk featuring Chris Heilman, President/COO of ASC Capacitor and the Thought Leader empowering perseverance while improving the lives of our customers, employees, and community. Join the conversation as we explore strategies for change management leading electronics manufacturing growth! American Shizuki Corporation (www.ascapacitor.com) has been the leading manufacturer of custom film and foil capacitors for over 70 years. Application engineering and designing capacitors to your specific requirements is their strength. American Shizuki Corporation is a division of Shizuki Electric Company of Japan. (www.shizuki.co.jp) Originally named Goodall Electric Company, the company was founded in the 1940s by Robert Goodall, an Ogallala, Nebraska inventor. A pioneering figure in electronics, Goodall supplied capacitors for proximity fuses for the United States Navy. His company also produced fishing reels, soldering machines and watch cleaning machines. The Goodall capacitor division was purchased in the 1960s by TRW Electronics. Well known for capacitor development, TRW was involved in many aspects of capacitor electronics, ranging from televisions to space exploration. TRW's focus was primarily DC capacitors as well as resistors and diodes. Shizuki Electric purchased the capacitor division in Ogallala in 1987. Shizuki brought AC technology to Ogallala and began making motor run capacitors in addition to the DC capacitors that had been developed over time by Goodall and TRW. ASC now produces DC products rated from 50V to 30,000V and AC products from 120V to 2500V. End applications change as technology progresses, but polypropylene film capacitors are still a preferred technology, and have become much larger in size than those produced in the company's earlier days. Today, ASC capacitors are used in numerous applications worldwide, including wind and solar power conversion, variable speed motor drives, electronics, military and power conditioning. IBS Electronics is an Authorized Distributor of ASC Capacitors.

Quantum Quote: “The obstacle is the way.” – Ryan Holiday 98% of American's daily trips measure less than 50 miles.  Do you know that plugging in an electric vehicle into a normal 120V socket overnight can provide 200 miles of range? This means that most of us can wipe out our gasoline consumption and eliminate 40% of our total carbon footprints simply by switching to an electric car.  But however you move around - people will still have accidents, either dying or getting injured on their way.  And so even a transition to electric vehicles will not by itself create safe travel. How do we get to safe, sustainable, and equitable mobility solutions in the near future, both for humans' sake and the environment? What are the best ways to clean up mobility and provide real solutions for a more sustainable future? Check out this week's AWESome EarthKind Energy podcast, where we interview Brandon Bartneck, the Director of FEV North America's New Business Development & Marketing sector. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. FIAT POISED TO BE ALL-ELECTRIC AUTOMAKER BY 2030"It was a little over a year ago when Fiat unveiled its new, all-electric 500e. Fiat CEO Olivier François has already confirmed that a hotter electrified Abarth version is in the works, but now we have confirmation that far more electrification will enter Fiat's lineup. In fact, the Italian brand intends to go completely electric before the end of this decade." according to Motor1.com: "As for Fiat's electric ambitions, though the 500e looks quite similar to internal-combustion-powered versions of the iconic small car, it's actually the first car from the brand built from the ground-up to be an EV. Manufactured in Turin, Italy, the 500e features a 42 kWh battery powering a single electric motor good for 118 bhp (88 kilowatts). " https://uk.motor1.com/news/512093/fiat-all-electric-automaker-2030/ VOLKSWAGEN CONSIDERS AN IPO FOR THEIR BATTERY DIVISION"Volkswagen is considering an IPO for its new battery division. According to Chief Technology Officer Thomas Schmall, this does not involve individual plants but the entire cell business." reports electrive: "By 2030, Volkswagen plans to build six new giga-factories for cell production with its partners in Europe alone, at a cost in the double-digit billions, as the Group announced at its Power Day in March. According to [Chief Technology Officer Thomas Schmall] Schmall, this is enough to equip more than five million cars with batteries. For China and the plants on the American continent in the USA and Mexico, further factories would probably be added if VW also wants to rely on the standard battery cell there. https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/01/volkswagen-considers-an-ipo-for-their-battery-division/ UK FIRM'S UNIQUE EV DESIGN COULD BOOST RANGE BY 30%"A London-based start-up has revealed an innovative electric car design solution that, it says, could allow for 30% more range per charge.  Page-Roberts, founded in 2019, aims to "dramatically upscale EV efficiencies with cutting-edge engineering solutions that deliver design elegance." says Autocar: ""Pointing to the added height, extended wheelbase and "structural complexities" of a conventional 'skateboard' arrangement, Page-Roberts posits that a vertically oriented power pack could improve the design, user experience and manufacturing cost of electric cars. The battery would be positioned between two rows of opposite-facing seats, in an arrangement that, Page-Roberts claims, is "far more compact" than existing designs. It would also allow the car to sit lower, be more aerodynamically efficient and weigh less." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news-manufacturing/uk-firms-unique-ev-design-could-boost-range-30 VOLKSWAGEN TAKING OVER A GREEK ISLAND WITH ITS EVS, GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS THE MOVE"Late last year, Volkswagen announced it would be “investing” in the Greek island of Astypalea by converting the island's mobility infrastructure from ICEs to EVs. With around 1,500 ICE vehicles on the island, there was no odor of eco-friendly goodness." says autoevolution: "The five-year plan is meant to transform Astypalea into the first “smart and sustainable island” among the Greek provinces and act as an example for the rest of Greece. It's also a platform for study, helping Volkswagen understand a myriad of factors that will surely affect a transition to an electric society.  Astypalea is currently a mostly diesel-driven island, as very few alternative energy sources have been set up except generators. But Volkswagen seems to embrace this as it offers a perfect laboratory in which to test all subsequent stages of a transition." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/volkswagen-taking-over-a-greek-island-with-its-evs-government-supports-the-move-162575.html NISSAN LAUNCHES FLAGSHIP ARIYA EV IN JAPAN"Nissan Motor has started taking preorders in Japan for limited editions of its first new battery electric car in a decade. The Japanese carmaker is pinning hopes on the Ariya, its first all-electric crossover SUV, to pep up its EV range." says Nikkei Asia: "Nissan said it would also do more to attract customers unfamiliar with electric vehicles, opening a website on Friday to allow Ariya preordering and virtual driving using augmented reality technology. Nissan's chief operating officer, Ashwani Gupta, told Nikkei Asia in a recent interview that the Japanese carmaker is set to share close to 70% of key EV components with its alliance partners, France's Renault and Japan's Mitsubishi Motors, to lower EV production cost." https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Nissan-launches-flagship-Ariya-EV-in-Japan NISSAN POSTPONES ‘ARIYA' LAUNCH DUE TO LACK OF CHIPS"Nissan is postponing the market launch of its new electric model Ariya by several months due to the ongoing chip shortage. The Japanese domestic market is to be served first, so an export to Europe in 2021 seems rather unlikely." according to electrive: "When the Ariya was first unveiled in July last year, Nissan had announced that it would be on the market in mid-2021. Now the company announced that only a limited edition of the Ariya will be available for launch in Japan from “this winter”, for which pre-orders are now opening there. Reservations for the Ariya in Europe, the USA and China will be possible “later this year”. Nissan does not reveal when exactly deliveries to export markets are to start. That Nissan has chosen to start with the simplest model rather than the top-of-the-line four-wheeler in the face of the chip shortage is likely due precisely to the lack of semiconductors: The smaller battery with fewer modules requires fewer electronics" https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/04/nissan-postpones-ariya-launch-due-to-lack-of-chips/ EV STARTUPS RACE FOR A 'GOLDEN TICKET' ORDER"The future of a bevy of commercial EV startups seeking investor capital through blank-check IPOs rests largely in the hands of a small group of big companies such as UPS, FedEx, DHL and Amazon. With each carrier having tens of thousands of vehicles in its global fleet, an order from a package delivery giant can launch a startup on the road to manufacturing scale and profitability, and serve as a marketing tool to win orders from other big customers." reports Autmotive News: " Some startups already have their golden ticket. Arrival, which went public via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), has an order for up to 10,000 vans from UPS. The Arrival electric test van decked out in UPS' distinct brown livery is popular with drivers at the package delivery giant's facility in London's Kentish Town district. During a demonstration of the van by Luke Wake, UPS vice president of maintenance and engineering, several drivers asked: "When can we drive one?" The van's battery pack will allow UPS to add automatic doors for drivers and LED lights in the back to help drivers find packages more quickly. Such features can save seconds per delivery -- which add up as UPS delivers 2 billion packages annually." https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/ev-startups-race-golden-ticket-order TEXAS BID TO IMPOSE SPECIAL STATE TAX ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES FAILS — FOR NOW"An effort to impose what amounts to a special state tax on electric vehicles fell short of the finish line in the recently concluded legislative session, although the reprieve from new road use fees might be temporary." saus Austin American Statesman: "That's because debate about the issue largely focused on how much and when — not if — owners of electric and other vehicles that aren't powered by gasoline should pay. The possible fees are likely to come up again in 2023 during the next regular session of the Legislature, if not before then in a special session. the legislation, which would have set the fee at $200 annually for most electric cars, calling it nearly double the amount many drivers of equivalent conventionally powered vehicles pay in gasoline taxes each year." https://eu.statesman.com/story/business/2021/06/02/texas-senate-bill-state-tax-electric-vehicles-fails-for-now/7490493002/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERSRajeev NArayanI think for most workplaces, 7.2 kW or even 3.8 kW Level II chargers would suffice. In just a few hours these chargers could offset the commute to and from work also, for the cost of just one DC fast charger, you could buy several level II chargers.  If these were more common, it would make EVs an option for people who do not have access to charging at home. Ideally it would be nice if workplaces got incentives to help offset the cost of installation, and for adding solar to help charge vehicles. Some places here in San Antonio simply contract with Charting companies, unfortunately they typically charge about 31c/kWh, and install just a few chargers to maximize profits. I would prefer if workplaces install their own chargers and either provide free charging or charge less exorbitant prices. Shahad ChoudhuryWe need more, slower chargers at workplaces. My work is limited to 8 chargepoint plugs because of the grid connection, but it only takes a couple hours to charge up most EVs on them.  This led to lots of frustration and wasted time (pre lockdown) when people moved their full cars, since multiple other people are all rushing down to try and get the spot when they're notified Barry WolfFor USA: run many (at least 10% of spaces) 20 amp circuits to the parking lot, with one circuit per parking spot, using 4 conductor cable but make each circuit a 120 V circuit (extra unused conductor enables 240 V service in the future). Charging at either 12 amps or 16 amps @ 120V for eight hours will provide ~11 kWh or ~15 kWh, respectively, of energy during the work day. This will provide30 to 60 miles of range, depending on EVSE amperage and car efficiency. Either have people bring own EVSE or provide L1 EVSEs.  Karl CramerI'd be happy if every workplace parking lamppost had an outdoor GFCI rated plug socket at its base. Since were there for 8-12 hours anyway we can get a long slow charge that's better for our battery life anyway. Ron BarberI assisted in the specification and configuration of the chargers at my workplace 2.5 years ago. One site of about 600 people we installed 14 Level 2 chargers (7.6kW or 3.8kW if both of the pair in use). A second location has about 1200 people and 24 Level 3 chargers. The units are from ClipperCreek which has provided excellent service. There is no charge to using the units but we ask people to use for only 4 hrs per session. It can vertebrae a point of contention with the number of EVs more than tripling since install.I also developed hardware and software to monitor the chargers and provide a web site for status.  The charging power is a bit low but some constraints on available power near the parking lot, but I did take a survey prior to speciation (about a year in planning) and collected commute distances and EV types to analyze average charging times needed. The system has proven to be well utilized. Michael ClasquinLots and lots of 240 volt sockets  that we can plug our granny chargers into, weatherproofed if necessary. Eight hours on a granny charger will get anybody home.  Stephen TroyerI think the type of charging at workplaces should be slow charging or bi-directional.  High speed chargers don't make as much sense at a work place because they'll run when demand on the grid is high, and because the average work day is long enough to get a charge from flat to full at a slow rate.  Bi-directional charging could make a lot of sense because then all those cars could help meet the peaks in demand and then put power back in before the end of the employees' work day so that they have plenty of power for the round trip home and back.  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What noises, if any, should electric vehicles make (inside or outside the vehicle) Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing. Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid. PREMIUM PARTNERSPHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBYPORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATIAUDI CINCINNATI EASTVOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNELRICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UKEMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. WHY THE F-150 LIGHTNING IS A HUGE SHIFT"The F-150 Lightning, an all-electric version of its popular pickup truck due out in 2022, and it’s aggressively priced for an EV. The base model with 230 miles of range starts at $39,974, while the extended range version starts in the mid-$50,000s and can go about 300 miles." says The Verge: "That puts it right on par, price-wise, with Tesla’s Cybertruck and far below more luxury-minded options like Rivian’s R1T or General Motors’ exorbitant GMC Hummer pickup. And since Ford’s vehicles are still eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, that price tag can essentially come down even more for early buyers. the F-150 Lightning is by far the most familiar-looking of the electric pickups announced to date. And Ford is betting big that this unchallenging boxy design — which Elon Musk poked fun at during the Cybertruck announcement in 2019 — will pay off." https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/19/22442777/ford-f-150-lightning-electric-truck-specs-price FORD F-150 PRICE AND SPECS"There are two undisclosed battery versions: Standard-Range and Extended-Range that are expected to have a range of 230 miles (370 km) and 300 miles (483 km) respectively. We guess that the battery capacity stands at 115 kWh net/125 kWh total and 155 kWh net/170 kWh total, respectively." says InsideEVs: "The mid-series XLT trim will start at $52,974 MSRP, while the top of the line trim is up to over $90,000. We don't know the price of the Extended-Range Battery version yet. The detailed pricing will be released in Fall 2021.  The battery cells for the electric F-150 are supplied from SK Innovation's battery plants in Commerce, Georgia (Ford will additionally form a JV with SK Innovation in the future). According to SK Innovation, the cells are the world’s first high-density “Nickel 9” (battery that has 90% nickel content in the cathode)" Ford F-150 Extended Range Specs: EPA range of up to 300 miles (483 km) 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h): "mid-4-second range" top speed: undisclosed dual motor all-wheel drive DC fast charging: up to 150 kW payload of up to 1,800-pound (816 kg) Cargo box volume 52.8 cubic feet Front trunk volume: 14.1 cubic feet (400 liters) and 400 pounds (181 kg) of payload towing capacity up to 10,000-pound (4,536 kg) Pro Power Onboard (option): 9.6 kW power export with ten 120V outlets plus one 240V outlet(Two in the cab, four in the bed and four in the front trunk, plus a 240V outlet in the bed) Intelligent Backup Power capability (standard): 9.6 kW https://insideevs.com/news/508686/ford-f150-lightning-specs-prices/ THE FORD F-150 LIGHTNING IS THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE OF DYSTOPIA"It will be the first electric vehicle, the company says, to serve as a “battery on wheels.” Ford says the extended battery in the more expensive version of the electric F-150 will be able to power a blacked-out home for three days. Potential users will likely have to pay to install a home integration system, price to be determined. During the rollout event, CEO Jim Farley cited recent ice storms in Texas, which have been blamed in part on climate change and which stunted the state's electric grid for five days, as a reason to pony up for the Lightning." says Wired: "Being able to pump 9.6 Kw of power into your home is what Costa Samaras, a professor who studies energy policy at Carnegie Mellon, calls “an add-on.” “It’s a luxury that someone might use once every two years,” he says. But the vehicle’s ability to power homes, as well as tools, might be the sort of feature that will attract even the previously EV-incurious, he says. Americans might not be interested in buying products for climate resilience per se. But demand for in-home generators in Texas has reached an all-time high since the February ice storms." https://www.wired.com/story/ford-lightning-f150-electric-vehicle-dystopia/ F-150 LIGHTNING'S RANGE WHEN TOWING"Although the Lightning is aided by the aerodynamic effects of its flat underbody, when running at real highway speeds there's no tricking the air molecules, and a bluff truck is going to suffer. In our highway range testing, which we conduct at a steady 75 mph, we typically see a range number that's about 20 percent below the EPA figure. Using that same bogey, which is probably generous in the case of a full-size pickup, would put the Lightning in the 180-to-240-mile zone for what you might achieve on a road trip." says Car & Driver: "Towing anywhere near the 10,000-pound maximum rating on XLT and Lariat models (with the maximum trailer tow package and extended-range battery) at highway speeds, we believe you'd be hard pressed to exceed double-digit miles. We'd take that bet, in fact. At least there's some smart technology to help adjust the range prediction shown to the driver in day-to-day use. As launched on the 2021 F-150, the Lightning uses a height sensor at each corner to estimate the load in the bed or on the trailer hitch and preemptively adjusts down the range predictions accordingly." https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36481590/ford-f150-lightning-range-towing/ FORD CEO: ELECTRIC VEHICLE DEMAND WILL TRANSFORM INDUSTRY"Jim Farley, the company’s new CEO, calls the introduction of an electric version of the nation’s top-selling vehicle a watershed moment for Ford as well as for the auto industry" according to AP who spoke to him Q: How long do you think it will be until the majority of vehicles you sell are battery electric? A: A lot of it will depend on government support, the infrastructure (charging stations) build-out, as well as a support for the purchase. We have a $7,500 benefit still at Ford. So it depends on what happens with government policy, and whether that tips the scale for a lot of customers. It has in Europe. China is moving fast. We’re totally sold out with the Mach E (Electric SUV). On the West Coast, it’s already changed quickly. It’ll be a matter of time before that sweeps across the country https://apnews.com/article/technology-electric-vehicles-business-718598a7dea7decc1791c946bae2616a FRUNKING FANTASTIC STORAGE"With more and more electric vehicles entering the market, and fewer engine bays needing to hold engines, frunks are here to stay, and we can quickly see them becoming competitive battlegrounds. And the new Ford F-150 Lightning has one." says Motortrend: "The F-150 Lightning comes only in four-door SuperCrew configuration with a 5.5-foot bed. But up front, in the nose where a large internal combustion engine would normally reside, there is a large and deep cargo hold offering 14.1 cubic feet of space.  The frunk locks with the rest of the vehicle. It can be opened any one of six ways: using the key fob, pressing the button under the frunk lid, pushing the button inside the cab, tapping the 15.5-inch touchscreen, using the keypad on the door, or through the FordPass app on your smartphone.  The cool blacked-out chrome grille is attached to the hood and they open as a single piece (again, like a trunk lid facing forward). There are LED lights embedded on the underside of the grille (which look curiously like the headlights on the new Rivian R1T pickup, albeit pointed into the F-150 instead of out... ) that throw light down into the cargo area. How far the hood raises is adjustable." https://www.motortrend.com/news/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-ev-frunk-trunk-details/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What’s the best specialist vehicle you can think of which would make a great EV?  Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com

For Amusement Only EM and Bingo Pinball Podcast

When should you (and when shouldn't you) use high tap on your EM.  High tapping the machine provides an extra amount of voltage to all coils in the machine. If you have low line conditions (less than 120V or a large draw on a given circuit), high tap may be appropriate.  Otherwise, it can cause damage to the machine (potentially).
