When the news broke that progressive metal titans The Ocean had lost two-thirds of their lineup, the heavy music community as a whole held its collective breath. Longtime vocal powerhouse Loïc Rossetti, alongside Paul Seidel and David Ramis Åhfeldt, all stepped away. For lesser bands, a mass exodus like that is a definitive death knell. It's the moment you pack up the gear, raise a glass to the memories, and gracefully bow out. But if you know anything about founding guitarist and mastermind Robin Staps, you know that "giving up" simply isn't wired into his DNA.Instead of letting the curtain close on a brilliant 25-year legacy, Staps dug his heels into the dirt, pivoted, and orchestrated one of the most astonishing creative rebuilds the genre has ever seen. Out of the ashes of uncertainty comes Solaris, the band's monumental 12th studio album, set to drop on September 25 via Pelagic Records. And let me tell you, this thing is a absolute beast of a record.Clocking in as a near-70-minute psychological sci-fi epic, Solaris takes inspiration from Andrei Tarkovsky's iconic film masterpiece, weaving dystopian cinematic soundscapes with the crushing, world-ending post-metal riffs that fans have been begging for since the Pelagial days. It's massive, it's introspective, and it introduces a radically revitalised global collective—featuring new vocalists Lane Shi and Enrico Tiberi, alongside guitarists Emmanuel Jessua and Marco Gennaro, all locking arms with Staps, bassist Mattias Hägerstrand, and drummer Jordi Farré. Jack Robert and Mitch Clews have spent years working as session musicians, learning other people's material, backing lead artists and making the whole operation sound considerably more competent. Now, alongside vocalist and guitarist Sam Tomlinson and the rest of NIGHTDIVE, they are putting that experience behind music carrying their own name.The band released its first material in August last year and has moved quickly since, following its debut EP with two new singles, a second EP and its first national tour. But even in a city bursting at the seams with top-tier talent, few outfits have captured the raw, sweat-soaked chaos of a Friday night quite like Gutterfire!.If you haven't crossed paths with these absolute legends yet, let me lay it out for you straight. This is a band that completely refuses to be put into a neat little box. They call their signature blend of sonic warfare "upbeat doom," and if that sounds like a beautiful contradiction, that's because it bloody well is! Worn-out taglines for women like, "don't be such a girl about it" OR "you're being dramatic" only fuel LØLØ to write her next hit song that's guaranteed to turn the sourest of souls sweet again.LØLØ has taken every opportunity that's come her way since being discovered on Spotify by non-other than Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory. With festivals like Lollapalooza, Sad Summer, Slam Dunk, Download, Rock Am Ring and the iconic Warped Tour under her belt, she has cemented her place firmly in the alt/ rock/ punk scene, thus laying down the modern blueprint for pop-punk.This chat was fun; my thick 'okka' accent took the wheel as we dug into the lore of our native animals. Upon reflection I was hardly selling Australia, more likely scaring the living daylights out of LØLØ. It's not my fault kangaroos actually want to fight you, our spiders are the size of dinner plates and koalas have STD's - don't shoot the messenger!I have to say that researching LØLØ's journey to success was something I really enjoyed. There's so much more to this talented musician then meets the eye - an interviewer's dream guest you could say! Admittedly, it can be hard to connect with people through Zoom on a strict 15 minutes timeframe. This wasn't the case here, I was lucky to be greeted by a kind smile that gave way to a super fun and easy interview. Blue October's Matt Noveskey | 20 Years of Foiled, 1.5 Billion Streams & a Full-Circle JourneySome interviews are about meeting someone for the first time. This one is about reconnecting with a story that has been part of mine for more than 25 years.I first saw Blue October at Rock Fest 2000 in Omaha, Nebraska—a legendary lineup featuring 311, Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus, Papa Roach, Nickelback and more. Months later, I opened for Blue October at the Ranch Bowl and eventually several more times, including at the Music Box. There was even a day spent hanging out at Fun-Plex before one of their Omaha shows.Then, in 2006, Justin Furstenfeld unexpectedly showed up at my band's show at Knickerbockers in Lincoln. He loved our set, gave us Blue October's manager's number, and asked if we wanted to tour. That opportunity ultimately became one of the moments that changed the trajectory of my band.Years later, I found myself working security when Blue October returned to Lincoln.Now, more than 25 years after I first saw the band, I sit down with bassist Matt Noveskey.We talk about Blue October's early days, the road to Foiled, the explosive success of “Hate Me” and “Into the Ocean,” the challenges that came with that success, and what has allowed the band to remain creatively relevant nearly three decades later.We also dive into the 20th anniversary of Foiled, the album's lasting impact, Blue October's connection with generations of fans, and the incredible milestone of their catalog surpassing 1.5 billion streams.For me, this conversation is more than an interview.
