Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the brothers Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus whose names are entwined with the end of Rome's Republic and the rise of the Roman Emperors. As tribunes, they brought popular reforms to the Roman Republic at the end of the 2nd century BC. Tiberius (c163-133BC) brought in land reform so every soldier could have his farm, while Gaius (c154-121BC) offered cheap grain for Romans and targeted corruption among the elites. Those elites saw the reforms as such a threat that they had the brothers killed: Tiberius in a shocking murder led by the Pontifex Maximus, the high priest, in 133BC and Gaius 12 years later with the senate's approval. This increase in political violence was to destabilise the Republic, forever tying the Gracchi to the question of why Rome's Republic gave way to the Rome of Emperors.WithCatherine Steel Professor of Classics at the University of GlasgowFederico Santangelo Professor of Ancient History at Newcastle UniversityAndKathryn Tempest Lecturer in Roman History at the University of LeicesterProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Appian (trans. This week we're discussing one our favorite reincarnated shows...drumroll...As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World Season 2. We love this show! We love Pham! We love the Maitro Company! We're excited to see some new combos, Frietz and Joe. Justin thinks that Ars may be coming for the throne and he will if the King doesn't get some better left and right handed people. Jakia doesn't think Ars is going after the throne, but that's a conversation for another day. Renge has not redeemed himself in Jakia's eyes. She's not championing a stole away. You want redemption?! Let's see some initiative outside of the support of Licia. But what we do know is that Jean is a bad man! And he's always been that man from a young age. All this and more in this week's episode of Kaizoku Uncharted.

Before the new season gets underway next week, we're bringing you a very special LIVE episode of The Rabbit Hole Detectives from the Cirencester History Festival back in October. In this week's episode, Charles is sticking with what he knows as he looks into Aristocrats and Agriculture, Cat is chipping away at her subject, Ötzi the Iceman, and Richard is keeping it local-ish with Ernest Gimson. Thank you so much to everyone who attended the live show, we really appreciate it. And apologies for any slight audio issues, it's due to the live nature of the show! We'll be back with a new episode next week but, until then, if you'd like to put forward a topic then you can email the show at: rabbitholedetectives@gmail.com. Plus, our book, The Rabbit Hole Book, is still out and available from all good book shops. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Send us a textI was born in Glasgow, a city carved by raw grit and humor, think of Sir Alex Ferguson and Billy Connolly. Not far from there, I began my career in Edinburgh, a mere fifty miles geographically, but an infinite leap in atmosphere. Imagine stepping into an aristocratic investment house, its rooms brimming with the ghosts of ambition and refinement. Suddenly finding yourself in the domain of tall men in their dead fathers' ill-fitting trousers. Aristocrats in suits hemmed just above their ankles, like ghosts of a forgotten mod era.My first posting? The Japanese department, September 1990, nine months after the Nikkei's spectacular peak at 40,000. I was young, unseasoned, but one thing I knew for sure: Japanese stocks were d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y not going back up anytime soon. Check the audio tape…This week's show isn't about stock indices or investment attire. No, it's about a curious creature, the tunicate. You see, the tunicate begins its life as a free-swimming entity, darting about the ocean with purpose and curiosity. It seeks, it explores, its a happy soul. And then, it finds its chosen spot, burrows its head into the seafloor, and, get this, it eats its own brain. Why? Because it no longer needs it. The tunicate's life becomes rooted, passive, and fixed, content to filter nutrients from the passing current. A lobotomized existence, blissfully detached from the need for thought or movement. It got me thinking. Is this not the state of many investors today? Consider the lobotomized meme stockholder, basking in the unthinking glow of rising markets. They've eaten their metaphorical brains, trading curiosity and action for the comfort of passive returns. They're Holding On for Dear Life, foolish squirts I call them. Music or no music? You tell me. And are you getting the giggles when I get all meditative...⬇️ Subscribe on Patreon or Substack for full episodes ⬇️https://www.patreon.com/HughHendryhttps://hughhendry.substack.com⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Leave a five star review and comment on Apple Podcasts!

For eighteen years (1983-2001) a fixture of radio & television's Howard Stern Show, comedian Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling was born and raised in East Norwich, a tiny hamlet on the glorious North Shore of Long Island, New York. He graduated in 1966 from Oyster Bay High School and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1971. In March, 1979, he created a dirty joke line, “Use Your Finger! Dial (516) 922-WINE!,” which has been in uninterrupted operation since 1979 [516-922-9463].The jokes worked. Jackie released three self-produced comedy lp's, 1979's “What Did You Expect?,” 1980's “Goin' Ape!,” and 1981's “Normal People Are People You Don't Know That Well” on his own label, OHR Records. In 1982, after founding “Governor's Comedy Shop” in Levittown on Long Island and touring as a national headliner, on a suggestion from a Washington DC comedy club owner, he blindly sent his three LP's to Howard Stern upon Howard's arrival at WNBC-AM in New York City. Howard called him to make a guest appearance on his radio show. In 1986, Jackie became a full-time cast member and the head writer of Stern's show, and as they say, the rest is history. Remarkable radio as well as show business history.Jackie left the Stern show in 2001 after fifteen-year run as head writer of the radio show, four television series, and three Pay-Per-Views. He's released six dirty joke CD's … “The Joke Man,” “Sgt. Pecker,” “Hot Dogs & Donuts,” Come Again?!,” F. jackie,” and “snart,” as well as three videos, five joke books and countless joke gadgets of all kinds, for children as well as adults. In 2006 he released a CD of his original music entitled “Happy Endings,” that he co-produced with guitar legend Frank Vignola. From 2007-2014, Jackie wrote and performed his own radio show on SiriusXM Satellite Radio, “Jackie's Joke Hunt,” and he wrote the joke page for Penthouse magazine for 17 years.Jackie is featured in the red-hot comedy documentary, “The Aristocrats,” over a dozen other independent films and has appeared on many television shows. He still works all around the country performing his solo act of rapid-fire filthy jokes and the classic finale, “Stump The Joke Man.” and guests on many of the top national radio shows and podcasts. For shows click on the link!https://www.jokeland.com

They also touch on the latest in Light & Wonder's legal battle against Aristocrat, as the company has vowed to produce a “Dragon Train 2.0” due to a court finding infringements in the maths behind its original cabinet. After the break, the show's attention shifts to the Philippines.
