We were Live with my good friend, 2x Emmy nominee, Gary Stockdale. What a joy after a long void. Pre-pandemic, it seems we saw each other everywhere, and often. COVID changed life. A lot. We talked about that and how both of us have Facebook Lives born out of necessity. You'd think with our combined expertise, it would be smooth sailing. You'd think. Tech glitches messed with Gary's fine art… his singing/playing and songwriting, which we were challenged to present, but Gary persevered and did treat us to two songs from his new musical, Showstopper, and an a cappella treat to take us out that I won't spoil. Gary took us back to his early days in Glendale, musical theatre at LA City College, his mentor Henry Mancini, Penn & Teller for whom he scored for 25 years. There was Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Aristocrats, Spongebob Square Pants, and lot of Gary music along the way to discuss. Even with the challenges, it was a fun, relaxed ride down Gary's memory lane. The kind of conversation that happens between friends. Lovely. And Gary's voice… I don't know how it's possible, but he sounds even more incredible than ever. What a gorgeous voice, and what an amazing songwriter! Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the brothers Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus whose names are entwined with the end of Rome's Republic and the rise of the Roman Emperors. As tribunes, they brought popular reforms to the Roman Republic at the end of the 2nd century BC. Tiberius (c163-133BC) brought in land reform so every soldier could have his farm, while Gaius (c154-121BC) offered cheap grain for Romans and targeted corruption among the elites. Going backwards by 26% was Helia which told the market its contract with Commonwealth Bank could expire by the end of the year. New Zealand-based Synlait Milk dropped 12%, despite posting a half-year net profit of NZ$4.8 million. Westpac rose 1%, and ANZ closed 0.7% higher. Gold Road Resources saw shares down 4.9% after it said production was set to be lower than expected in the March quarter. Aristocrat down 2.8%, JB Hi-fi losing 2.2% and Guzman Y Gomez dropping three-quarters of a percent. While Fortescue, Transurban and REA Group also went backwards. MARKET WRAP: ASX200: down 0.12%, 8,399 GOLD: $2,745 US/oz BITCOIN: $164,265 AUD Wisetech Global dropped half a percent, NextDC fell 7.2, while Goodman Group plunged 8.2%. Also tumbling were the energy companies – Origin down 3.4%, AGL down 2.3% and Yancoal off by 3.7%. Sigma Healthcare took off, as its merger partner Chemist Warehouse reported record sales. Shares were up 12.2% to $3.03. Consumer stocks were led higher by Wesfarmers rising 1.1% and Aristocrat gaining 4.2%. The Big Four banks all finished in the green - Westpac 1.2% higher – but Macquarie lost 1.5%. A warning by Nuix that it would post a half-year fall in earnings saw its shares dive more than 20% to $4.31. I was young, unseasoned, but one thing I knew for sure: Japanese stocks were d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y not going back up anytime soon. You see, the tunicate begins its life as a free-swimming entity, darting about the ocean with purpose and curiosity. It seeks, it explores, its a happy soul. And then, it finds its chosen spot, burrows its head into the seafloor, and, get this, it eats its own brain. Why? Because it no longer needs it. The tunicate's life becomes rooted, passive, and fixed, content to filter nutrients from the passing current. A lobotomized existence, blissfully detached from the need for thought or movement.It got me thinking. Is this not the state of many investors today? For eighteen years (1983-2001) a fixture of radio & television's Howard Stern Show, comedian Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling was born and raised in East Norwich, a tiny hamlet on the glorious North Shore of Long Island, New York. He graduated in 1966 from Oyster Bay High School and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1971. In March, 1979, he created a dirty joke line, “Use Your Finger! Dial (516) 922-WINE!,” which has been in uninterrupted operation since 1979 [516-922-9463].​The jokes worked. Jackie released three self-produced comedy lp's, 1979's “What Did You Expect?,” 1980's “Goin' Ape!,” and 1981's “Normal People Are People You Don't Know That Well” on his own label, OHR Records.​In 1982, after founding “Governor's Comedy Shop” in Levittown on Long Island and touring as a national headliner, on a suggestion from a Washington DC comedy club owner, he blindly sent his three LP's to Howard Stern upon Howard's arrival at WNBC-AM in New York City. Howard called him to make a guest appearance on his radio show. In 1986, Jackie became a full-time cast member and the head writer of Stern's show, and as they say, the rest is history. Remarkable radio as well as show business history.​Jackie left the Stern show in 2001 after fifteen-year run as head writer of the radio show, four television series, and three Pay-Per-Views. He's released six dirty joke CD's … “The Joke Man,” “Sgt.
