One of the best philosophies I have ever learned about networking is that business is not B2B (business to business); it's H2h (human to human). Humans are complex beings. They have emotions, biases, experiences, expectations, fears, hopes, and random acts of kindness or stupidity (depending on the planet's alignment and inspiration from higher powers). In face-to-face networking, we get a tiny glimpse into the complexity of a person's overall being. Think of networking as a relationship bank! You have to make deposits to create interest. Every quality network you can tap into creates a foundational asset that can and will help grow your sphere of influence.

In January of 2018, Christopher was two years away from retiring from the military and was thinking about the future. He wanted to figure out how he was going to make money once he was out and found the Bookkeeper Business Launch course and thought that it might be a good fit. Turns out it was. [3:45] Chris got his first client one month after completing the course. He connected with them on Craigslist and is still working with them today. [4:30] Chris used the money from the first client and joined the BNI (Business Networking International). Using only BNI referrals, Chris got to ten clients by October. He also got five more clients using paid leads from Thumbtack. [6:50] BNI meetings are structured so the first fifteen minutes are meant for networking with the members and occasionally giving ten minute presentations. For Chris, being in BNI is not his natural environment. He was actually voted “Most Likely To Eat Alone” in high school because he was such an introvert, but he faced his fears and did it anyway. It took him a good six months to feel comfortable at the meetings but now he really enjoys them. [10:00] Some people are good at talking to people and starting a business which seemed to be the case for Chris. He feels like it was just something he had to learn, so he did. His one regret may be not having gone to college sooner because the different learning techniques you pick up in school could have been an asset. [13:20] Chris has to serve one more year in the military before he can retire, and because of that it has forced him to hire more employees as his business expanded beyond what he was capable of handling. [14:30] Chris's vision for his future business is to essentially just manage the business, do the marketing, and bring in the clients while other bookkeepers do the numbers work. [16:15] Chris's main challenge/potential opportunity is just keeping track of everything and keeping focused. Working with clients is a lot like juggling, when you have just four in the air it can be managed. Once you start juggling 27, things start to get hectic. The good news is that nothing major has slipped through the cracks yet. [19:35] The goal is putting processes in place, not necessarily revenue or clients. Chris needs to create order from chaos. [22:30] The easiest way to create a new process is to just record yourself doing that task. Record your screen while you're doing the work, narrate what you're doing, and make sure you keep it short. Once it's recorded, you can transcribe the audio using a service like Rev.com. With the transcription you can condense the process into a checklist that contains the major important points of that process. Once you've got that finished, not only did you get the work done, but you've also defined a process and put yourself ahead of 90% of all bookkeepers. [28:15] The biggest mistake that Ben made in his business was feeling that he was so busy that he need to hire people to take care of all the chaos in his business, but all that resulted in was more chaos. [29:20] You will have to change your mindset as you transition from doing the work to reviewing the work. What got you here isn't going to get you to where you want to go. [30:35] Start with the processes you like least and that are the most client-facing. Give it time and you will eventually start to enjoy the process. [33:10] Your business is a system and a system is a series of processes that get the work done. The value in the system is in clearly defined processes, especially if you are interested in eventually selling the bookkeeping business that you're building. [34:30] You have to be committed to the process, it's always a challenge to do something new or something big. [35:40] Chris is looking at a couple of different software options to help him track what he's working on but so far he's been falling back on just using a spreadsheet. Lots of bookkeeping professionals believe all they need is one more app but that's not necessarily the case. Sometimes you just need what will get the job done. Start mapping out your processes with a pen and paper well before you get to an app or a spreadsheet. Look to the function before you look for a shiny object. [41:10] You don't want to be dependent on a person to get things done, you want processes that people can do. That way if someone leaves the team, you can move things around without causing chaos trying to find a new perfect person to fill that role. [43:55] A virtual assistant may be just the answer that Chris is looking for. [45:00] Keep your big goals front and center. For Ben, that means a giant whiteboard positioned in front of his desk that keeps his goals and projects always on the top of his mind. Technology is great, but you should lean on your process first. [48:45] When you need to get something done, don't think of “what”, think of “who”. Who has done what you want to do and how can you talk to them? [50:30] Chris's wife has been crucial in terms of support for the growth of the business. A common thread for people who have succeeded in the bookkeeping business is having a supportive spouse. The beauty of an invitation is that a new world of possibility is present. When someone invites us, whether it's a new job opportunity from a recruiter/headhunter or being invited to a BNI(Business Networking International), something becomes possible that you didn't know about. Attending networking events, I met someone named Joslyn who introduced me to the world of Accomplishment Coaching. She kept inviting me, and I remember that the observation days were once a week on a Saturday morning from ten am to 12:30 pm. I remember sitting there and being captivated by the vulnerability of the people in the coaching training program. It's funny how things turn out. I was on this random Networking app, which led me to meet some guy named JP Pullos, one of the Landmark Team Management and Leadership Program leaders. I randomly accepted an invite to a networking event that hosts over 120 + guests somewhere in the basement of a corporate building located near Union Square in NYC. I never knew that saying yes to things and accepting that invite would lead me down the path of BNI, where I get to meet with thousands of people for 5 + years, waking up and attending a 7 am networking event. Through these beautiful networking events, I met Joslyn, and my life shifted the moment I signed up for $16,000 program that seemed like a tremendous amount of money. Don't get me wrong, it's still a heavy investment, and that program alone has given me over $100,000+ in value in terms of self-fulfillment and self-actualization. A simple yes can you lead you to many thousands of people. Being uncomfortable and open to rejection by reaching out to a buddy of mine now but a random stranger at the time, Garrett, through searching through LinkedIn to find employees who graduated from Rutgers has changed my life getting into selling a Learning and Development Product. Simple choices can have monumental impacts on our lives if we choose to go outside our comfort zone. Just yesterday, I received a thank you note from someone that I did a workshop with, and it filled my heart to see her implementing some of the advice that makes a difference in my career and how if people implemented it in their lives, it would go a long way. My call to action is think of minor decisions and how they can lead to a world of possibility? Was it when you dared to propose to your significant other, and now you have beautiful kids, that you cannot imagine a world without them? Think of what life would be like if we dared to fail more often, but in those courageous moments, something else opens up for you that was never there before.

96. We're all holding our breath, hoping for the best

Most of your visible success will come from the things you do no one else sees. Just like the seeds you sow. Most of the process of a plant's growth happens beneath the surface, hidden in a place no one sees. Success— which we've defined as living up to your God-given potential in every area of life— is largely like that. Most of the factors that create visible success are invisible. They're real and measurable, but most people don't see them. Because of that, problems arise when we compare our daily grind to someone else's moment on the stage— or their highlight reel. We often don't see the myriad of factors contributing to that highlight reel. Again… Most of the actions which create visible success are unseen. "You only see 10% of the iceberg," the saying goes. "90% of the iceberg exists beneath the surface." The preacher from whom I first heard that stat used the metaphor of the iceberg to describe character flaws beneath the surface of our lives. Unseen things we hide. Things that left unchecked can bring things as big as the Titanic down in a night. We've all watched it unfold numerous times… Ministry leader fails— because of some huge thing beneath the surface Marriage falls apart— because of some relational rift that kept getting swept away under the rug rather than discussed Kids shun parents and parents shun kids— because of some hurt that dug so deep that no one would simply own so that everyone can move forward together A hidden addiction— to alcohol, porn, drugs, sex— suddenly combusts and something (or someone) goes down in flames You could add more things to the list. We've both watched it play out in real time. Multiple times. Speaking about unseen things we should AVOID is NOT the purpose of this talk. Rather, I'd like to call your attention to the UNSEEN THINGS we should NOT avoid. The UNSEEN things we should do every day. It's these UNSEEN THINGS that create greatness. And it's those same things that give us the platform to encourage others to the greatness within them. What are the “underwater” activities? Things like: Persisting when you're tired or even bored Failing and getting back up Sacrificing time when you could be doing other things and receiving an “instant” result Dealing with humiliation— then stepping back and showing your face to the same crown (often, more times than once) Overcoming doubt and frustration— the inevitable feelings with any of the above happen Good habits for extended periods of time Feeling alone— as you do the hard work no one else sees You'll eventually “walk on water.” To succeed, though, you've got to grow comfortable swimming beneath the surface first. Everyone who walks on water first swims under water! Of course, not all swimming is negative. The biggest part of “the swim” is being consistent— of working the hours required, of continuing the good habits, of pressing forward even when no one else is… even when you don't seem to be making much progress. After all, that's when the biggest breakthroughs are generally just around the corner. Here's something I've learned about success and dreams: If it's your dream, you'll invest the time it takes to succeed. Even when no one sees. If not, you won't. (That doesn't mean you're a “bad person,” by the way. It just means that, well… this isn't your dream. Something else is.) For a season I had a list of wannabe business builders on our home-based biz team who consistently missed training opportunities and big events— even though those are two of the factors which successful builders always attribute to their success. In other words, these efforts are part of the success recipe. Implement those and you're closer to your "cake." “I can't miss this _______________” (fill in the blank of whatever the “thing of the month” they opted to attend instead), they regularly reported. Then, the promise— “I'll get to the next event that I'm able to squeeze into my schedule.” No problem. Missing one opportunity isn't the end of the world. Life is full of trade-offs. But, if you miss every single opportunity, you need to step back and be honest with yourself. In some instances, they need to admit the truth. This business isn't their dream. Or, if it is their dream, they haven't come to terms with the actual cost. It's something that's a good idea, but if they're not willing to invest the time and energy… if there not willing to move this from a MISSION to a VISION… from a WHAT to a HOW… then, really, it's not theirs… They don't own it. Or they want to own it yet work so little at it, that they CAN'T SUCCEED because they're not willing to invest the time + energy that successful people invest in it. Remember, success is a recipe. That means you need the same ingredients and the same time (20 minutes for a chocolate cake and a whole lot more time for big life dreams) to generate success. Anything less and you're fooling yourself— even if unintentionally. Let's apply this concept to other dreams, because this principle is is true in every area of life: If you want to lose weight, you likely need to exercise 30 minutes a day x 5 days a week. And you need to adjust your food intake. Anything less, and it's probably not your dream. If you want to write a book, you need 2 hours each day for several months. If you want a sizzling marriage, you need a date night— or some other form of time alone. Your kids hearts? Turn off the TV, block 1 hour a night for family dinner, and leave you cell phone in the briefcase until they go to bed. This sort of honest evaluation forces us to consider whether or not the dream, in fact, really is ours. Remember, success isn't just a matter of doing the right things (effort), it's a matter of doing the right things consistently over the long haul (time). Both are important. A little time doing the right things is as ineffective as a lot of time doing the wrong things! Success doesn't exist without the journey. Everyone who is successful “fast” generally comes to the game with YEARS of previous experience, numerous invaluable relationships, and an immense amount of SKILL that they've already developed. In other words, their starting line usually isn't the starting line that you see. They've already been working the dream (sometimes even unbeknownst to themselves) for years. Sometimes even decades. And remember, even the most successful people… well, even after they can “walk on water” they still swim underneath it MOST OF THE TIME. It also means this— some people, quite frankly, aren't swimming. They're drowning. Or treading water at best. I'm more open to seeing it now, because I spent my own long season treading water... A few years ago I subbed for my wife at a local BNI (Business Networking International) meeting. The organization has chapters throughout the world where like-minded professionals meet once a week to learn about each other, their businesses, and help each other succeed through strategic connections. They probably have a chapter meeting in your neighborhood, in fact. You're only allowed a few absences a year, so you're encouraged to find a sub when you must miss a meeting. That way, your sub can learn what others' needs are, they can present your own, and they can continue the dynamic conversation of everyone moving forward together. Then, they can report back to you. We lived a few blocks from where the local chapter met. I visited a few times with my wife, got to know the group, and regularly got phoned to sub when someone needed to miss the meeting since I knew the members. “I'm the group's professional stand-in,” I told them. "I enjoy riding with my wife to the meetings, and I'm cheap— I work for the free coffee you serve each Thursday morning." One day I actually subbed for my wife. That was rare. Usually, I subbed for others. In fact, I only stood in for her that one time. I arrived early to help greet people as they arrived— a volunteer job she typically performed each week. There were just two or three people there setting up when one of the members approached me and asked, "Hey, who are you subbing for today...?" I told him, “My wife. I'm actually filling in for her..." He asked if she was sick. In that moment, I made a decision. I could say, “Yes”— and lie. Or, I could tell him the truth. Normally one to hide, I opted to reveal what was happening. You see, we were swimming underwater. One of our dreams had taken a huge toll on us. "No. She's tired. Emotionally, we're threadbare. It's been a long year. I told her she should sleep in and rest... I would cover for her." I could see, sense, and feel that my friend was listening. Somehow, the words I was speaking were serving life and breath to him... I continued, "In these meetings, everyone hi-fives and fist-bumps. We talk about how great things are. How business is growing. How excited we are. Things like that. The truth, though, is that most people are hurting... they're tired. Drained. They need a hug— not a handshake." Or— to use the analogy from earlier— we stand on top of the iceberg. We don't reveal that hard work it's taken us to get there. And the work it takes to remain there. Or that there are painful, gut-wrenching things under the surface of life, too... He looked at me. He paused. Cleared his throat. Then— "It's been a hard year for us, too... I thought it was just us..." Turns out, it's not just them. It's us. And everyone else in the room. Probably you, too. All of us. Couldn't we just own that, share a big group hug, and start stepping forward together? Encourage each other...? Call forth the greatness within each other— and point to the destiny that was just ahead...? Would it really be OK if someone walked into church this Sunday, mascara running down their face...? Would we think someone was crazy if they said they were really, really struggling... and didn't have words for how, why, or what for... but that they were just overwhelmed...? On the surface— that 10% above water— this leader in BNI looked incredible. Well dressed. Nice looking. Amazing family. A few kids + a wife + a house. And, I'd say that under the surface, his character is solid. He's incredible there, too. That 90% is NOT going to implode like I talked about earlier in this chapter. In other words, he's swimming underwater not because of character flaws that he's hiding but because— let's just be real— life is beautiful but life is also hard. Dreams are difficult, too. Especially the ones that matter most. The ones like thriving marriages. And heart connections with kids. And deep friendships. Especially when there's so much other stuff weighing you down. Yes, he's swimming underwater most of the time. At least 90% of it. I am, too. And so are you. What would it be like if we realized that, yes, despite how bad things are right now, they will get better? And, that all success is proceeded by effort and time— swimming underwater? And what would it mean to the people with whom we come in contact every day if we treated them as if they've been holding their breath for a long time...? If we took the moments not just to chit-chat or fist-bump, but to infuse life and hope into them... to acknowledge their diligence... to honor, even, their struggle... to assume that they might be barely holding themselves above water, treading the wake through their tiredness...? Hi, Braith. Welcome. How are you today. Braith Bamkin: I am fantastic Donna, thank you very much for inviting me on to said this with you and your viewers. Donna Hanson: Awesome. So, let's just get stuck striding what my first question shifting from corporate to BNI and having BNI on many regions why the move? Braith Bamkin: Do you mind if I take you back in time back to the 80s and I was around I'm not sure you were around my very first real job was working in commercial textiles and I remember in the very first week of working in that company, the woman that had started this business. Now we're driving across the Sydney Harbour Bridge as you do. And I was looking up at the good as and she said to me, Braith, if you're going to be successful in this business, you need to know how to network. So, this is the 80s is I was young, I knew everything. Of course, I knew nothing, and I had no idea what that word meant so we went into town. We did our business and on the way, back. I was looking at the girl as again on the Harbour Bridge. And I said, Judy. I have no idea what networking is can you explain what you mean by that. And over the next two years, she taught me what networking was and how you could build your business and how you can become successful through networking and it was a lesson that I took with me. Well, the rest of my time in that business. And as I moved through corporate and one thing led to another and my very last job, I was working in the mattress business. I was a national sales and marketing manager. We had franchisees and I think you've got a network, you've got a network. And one of them said to me, where are you doing it. And I went, you know, I've given up something I know works well. In fact, I had actually started a networking group here in Melbourne about 20 years ago so nothing. Nothing to do with being I was a not for profit. And it's still going. And you know, I went back into it and somebody invited me to obey and I'm at and the rest, as they say, is history. Donna Hanson: Wow, you know, sometimes you dip your toe into the water on something and then you decide that. That's for you. Braith Bamkin: Yeah. Well, I mean, my father said to me when I was probably in my 30s.

Dena Ganje, My Mechanic, Tuscon, AZ.  At 19 she received her first car as a surprise from her future husband Billy, this was a vehicle he restored and since then she have been a part of the automotive industry in one aspect or another. Key Talking Points Community help- you have the time even if you don't think you do. If you're thinking about it, you're already doing it and you need to put it into action. People think the little things don't add up but it does. If your customers or employees ask for your help (sponsoring little league) find a way to help. What's important to them should be important to you. Don't feel pressured to purchasing top-level sponsorships, consider smaller donations so you do more.   “People don't care how much you know, they want to know how much you care.” Driving Forward by My Mechanic is an idea in process. They have to date given away 4 vehicles to persons in need. These vehicles are either donated to or purchased by My Mechanic, typically from customers. They also include a care package of support with the donation such as a gift certificate for future maintenance or repair needs that may come up within the next year.   Community support for someone else's charity that helped with Dena's charity- Southern Arizona Book Heroes is a Tucson local nonprofit that provides books to first responders to distribute to the Children within their reach. For Example, when a Police Officer is responding to an event and there is a child present they will have a duffel bag of books to choose something to share with the child. This effort will hopefully provide a distraction to the child reducing trauma as well as break down the barriers that 1st responders often face when working with Children. Lastly and equally important is to encourage literacy. The founder of SABH is a single mom, working full time and volunteers for the American Legion as well as running her own nonprofit. When she said she needed help to sort, organize and fill the bags Dena organized a volunteer day at My Mechanic to fill that need.  Employees, customers, and friends came to help. They sorted thousands of books, we filled almost a hundred bags. Over the next two weeks, SABH was able to deliver bags of books to 5 precincts all over Arizona. During the volunteer day, Dena became aware of the condition of the founder's own vehicle. It was not reliable or safe. Everyone at My Mechanic nominated her for a car from driving forward. Following all that she posted about it on Facebook which created a great buzz online about our business and our charity. Resulting in another running vehicle to be donated to the program for the next person in need.    “Cars are vessels of freedom.” Culture- employees are able to see an impact of what they do beyond the day-to-day work. They are helping their community, they see the donation vehicle they've worked on be donated to someone in need. It's more than a job.   1999- Billy Ganje worked as a full-time technician at local shops while working on vehicles on his own on the side. MASA: Growing up in the small town of Moultrie located in Colquitt County deep in South Georgia brought Masa Kenney into contact with an agrarian lifestyle and community. As a young teen, he spent a lot of his time involved with 4-H, FFA, and the annual Sunbelt Ag Expo. The Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition has been billed as America’s largest agricultural exposition for over 4 decades now. Many of his friends lived and worked on farms, and his summers were spent helping them pick crops and tend to cattle. Two of those summers brought him into a deeper understanding and appreciation of the science that is incorporated into agriculture when at the ages of 13 & 14 during summer break he worked in Valdosta for Funk’s G Hybrid Seed Company which conducted a selective breeding program using a technique of self-pollination to create a genetically desirable harvest. His junior and senior years in high school introduced him to a landscaping job and cultivated his love of working with Nature through the beautification of the environment. By working in this field he gained a greater respect and understanding of the symbiotic relationship that plants shared with humans, not just in the exchange of the necessary gases to survive but also the deeper effects that the environment and plants have on people and vice-versa. It was then that Masa decided that he wanted to attend one of the best agriculture universities in the nation and find a career path that involved working with plants.. With no way to pay for college, he joined the U.S. Army and opted for the Army College Fund and the G.I. Bill instead of a one-time cash enlistment bonus to pay for his college education. After a station overseas in Europe and a deployment to the Middle East for Desert Shield & Desert Storm, he went right back to his chosen career path and worked for several different landscape companies and nursery centers while attending Valdosta State College and then UGA. Upon graduation he went to work for a large scale landscape company in Savannah only to return six months later to the incredible city he had come to love in Athens. Here he spent the next 15 years raising a new family, starting a new landscape business, and settling into a city that his family, the Kenneys, had originated from five generations earlier. His landscape business, Lavish Landscapes, LLC, operated for over 12 years and offered services in landscape design, installation, maintenance, irrigation, hardscapes, drainage remediation, licensed chemical applications, and consultations. During this period Masa was a member of the GGIA (Georgia Green Industry Association) and one of the founding members of the original BNI (Business Networking International) chapter in Athens. Masa moved to Hawaii after that to visit with his mother and sister and eventually found himself again drawn into his chosen field of cultivation with a licensed medical cannabis home grow co-operation. After Hawaii Masa spent a few years in Kentucky working with his brother in the medical field of Prosthetics & Orthotics with the intention of starting a new career in that field, but once again, Fate seemed determined to keep Masa with his true love and passion of working with plants. MASA: Growing up in the small town of Moultrie located in Colquitt County deep in South Georgia brought Masa Kenney into contact with an agrarian lifestyle and community. As a young teen, he spent a lot of his time involved with 4-H, FFA, and the annual Sunbelt Ag Expo. The Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition has been billed as America’s largest agricultural exposition for over 4 decades now. Many of his friends lived and worked on farms, and his summers were spent helping them pick crops and tend to cattle. Two of those summers brought him into a deeper understanding and appreciation of the science that is incorporated into agriculture when at the ages of 13 & 14 during summer break he worked in Valdosta for Funk’s G Hybrid Seed Company which conducted a selective breeding program using a technique of self-pollination to create a genetically desirable harvest. His junior and senior years in high school introduced him to a landscaping job and cultivated his love of working with Nature through the beautification of the environment. By working in this field he gained a greater respect and understanding of the symbiotic relationship that plants shared with humans, not just in the exchange of the necessary gases to survive but also the deeper effects that the environment and plants have on people and vice-versa. It was then that Masa decided that he wanted to attend one of the best agriculture universities in the nation and find a career path that involved working with plants.. With no way to pay for college, he joined the U.S. Army and opted for the Army College Fund and the G.I. Bill instead of a one-time cash enlistment bonus to pay for his college education. After a station overseas in Europe and a deployment to the Middle East for Desert Shield & Desert Storm, he went right back to his chosen career path and worked for several different landscape companies and nursery centers while attending Valdosta State College and then UGA. Mychelle Blake runs her own web design and SEO company with a focus on small to medium businesses and non-profits. She provides a full range of online business services including website design, copywriting for the web, search engine optimization, Google analytics setup and reporting, and web accessibility audits. She approaches her business with an eye towards online solutions that fits each of her clients' unique needs. She also has a specialty in helping individuals develop online course platforms, whether it's on their own website or using pre-configured learning management systems. She has studied web design and internet technology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and was one of the very first students of the Las Vegas campus of the Iron Yard Front End Engineering program. She also works as a writer for LoveToKnow, writing on a diverse set of topics from website design and social media to pet care and gaming. In addition to her technical background, her professional background includes over 20 years working in administration, development and marketing/communications positions in the non-profit world. She has worked for both 501c3 charitable organizations and 501c6 nonprofit professional associations. She previously was a Certified Association Executive (CAE) through the American Society for Association Executives (ASAE). She has a Masters in Social Welfare with a concentration on Community Administration, Planning and Programs through the University of California Los Angeles. Growing up in the small town of Moultrie located in Colquitt County deep in South Georgia brought Masa Kenney into contact with an agrarian lifestyle and community. As a young teen, he spent a lot of his time involved with 4-H, FFA, and the annual Sunbelt Ag Expo. The Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition has been billed as America’s largest agricultural exposition for over 4 decades now. Many of his friends lived and worked on farms, and his summers were spent helping them pick crops and tend to cattle. Two of those summers brought him into a deeper understanding and appreciation of the science that is incorporated into agriculture when at the ages of 13 & 14 during summer break he worked in Valdosta for Funk’s G Hybrid Seed Company which conducted a selective breeding program using a technique of self-pollination to create a genetically desirable harvest. His junior and senior years in high school introduced him to a landscaping job and cultivated his love of working with Nature through the beautification of the environment. By working in this field he gained a greater respect and understanding of the symbiotic relationship that plants shared with humans, not just in the exchange of the necessary gases to survive but also the deeper effects that the environment and plants have on people and vice-versa. It was then that Masa decided that he wanted to attend one of the best agriculture universities in the nation and find a career path that involved working with plants.. With no way to pay for college, he joined the U.S. Army and opted for the Army College Fund and the G.I. Bill instead of a one-time cash enlistment bonus to pay for his college education. After a station overseas in Europe and a deployment to the Middle East for Desert Shield & Desert Storm, he went right back to his chosen career path and worked for several different landscape companies and nursery centers while attending Valdosta State College and then UGA. It was while attending classes at UGA that he was introduced to a scientific cutting edge technology in agriculture when he worked in the Horticulture Department’s Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory under Dr. Hazel Wetzstein who is one of the most well respected pioneers in her field of plant genetic research and a recent recipient of the Fellows Award. This is where Masa learned the true scientific process of cultivating plants and how we can work with plants on a genetic level to propagate exact clones from plant tissue and experiment with genetic modification techniques to produce plants that are more desirable in many aspects: higher yield, higher sugar content, resistance to drought, disease, pests, herbicides, etc. Although he had acquired a large amount of his botanical knowledge through his years of work in the industry and in the classroom, it was in that lab that he took a huge leap forward in his understanding and appreciation of Nature. Masa Kenney graduated from the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science school of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture in 1997. He has a major in Horticulture and a minor in Crop & Soils Science. While attending UGA, he was a member of the Horticulture Club and BioTechnology Journal Club. Upon graduation he went to work for a large scale landscape company in Savannah only to return six months later to the incredible city he had come to love in Athens. Here he spent the next 15 years raising a new family, starting a new landscape business, and settling into a city that his family, the Kenneys, had originated from five generations earlier. His landscape business, Lavish Landscapes, LLC, operated for over 12 years and offered services in landscape design, installation, maintenance, irrigation, hardscapes, drainage remediation, licensed chemical applications, and consultations. During this period Masa was a member of the GGIA (Georgia Green Industry Association) and one of the founding members of the original BNI (Business Networking International) chapter in Athens. Masa moved to Hawaii after that to visit with his mother and sister and eventually found himself again drawn into his chosen field of cultivation with a licensed medical cannabis home grow co-operation. After Hawaii Masa spent a few years in Kentucky working with his brother in the medical field of Prosthetics & Orthotics with the intention of starting a new career in that field, but once again, Fate seemed determined to keep Masa with his true love and passion of working with plants. He headed west by way of Colorado to attend a CannaGrow Expo and onto Nevada to find employment with a cannabis company since Nevada had just legalized recreational use at the time. Bringing his education and past experience to bear, Masa helped this company start up a new tissue culture propagation laboratory in a Las Vegas cultivation facility. That company was impressed enough that they offered him a position as a lab manager to start up another tissue culture propagation lab in the very first medical grow facility in Louisiana. After that venture Masa found himself back in Georgia working as a project manager in the hotel construction industry but once again found Fate leading him back to Athens after a 10 year absence to work in the field of Horticulture with Cannabis. Masa has been registered as a Marijuana Agent in Nevada and Louisiana and certified in the state of Georgia as a licensed Pesticide Applicator and as a Level 1A GSWCC (Georgia Soil & Water Conservation Commission) card holder which is the required state form of the NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System).

In January of 2018, Christopher was two years away from retiring from the military and was thinking about the future. He wanted to figure out how he was going to make money once he was out and found the Bookkeeper Business Launch course and thought that it might be a good fit. Turns out it was. [3:45] Chris got his first client one month after completing the course. He connected with them on Craigslist and is still working with them today. [4:30] Chris used the money from the first client and joined the BNI (Business Networking International). Using only BNI referrals, Chris got to ten clients by October. He also got five more clients using paid leads from Thumbtack. [6:50] BNI meetings are structured so the first fifteen minutes are meant for networking with the members and occasionally giving ten minute presentations. For Chris, being in BNI is not his natural environment. He was actually voted “Most Likely To Eat Alone” in high school because he was such an introvert, but he faced his fears and did it anyway. It took him a good six months to feel comfortable at the meetings but now he really enjoys them. [10:00] Some people are good at talking to people and starting a business which seemed to be the case for Chris. He feels like it was just something he had to learn, so he did. His one regret may be not having gone to college sooner because the different learning techniques you pick up in school could have been an asset. [13:20] Chris has to serve one more year in the military before he can retire, and because of that it has forced him to hire more employees as his business expanded beyond what he was capable of handling. [14:30] Chris’s vision for his future business is to essentially just manage the business, do the marketing, and bring in the clients while other bookkeepers do the numbers work. [16:15] Chris’s main challenge/potential opportunity is just keeping track of everything and keeping focused. Working with clients is a lot like juggling, when you have just four in the air it can be managed. Once you start juggling 27, things start to get hectic. The good news is that nothing major has slipped through the cracks yet. [19:35] The goal is putting processes in place, not necessarily revenue or clients. Chris needs to create order from chaos. [22:30] The easiest way to create a new process is to just record yourself doing that task. Record your screen while you’re doing the work, narrate what you’re doing, and make sure you keep it short. Once it’s recorded, you can transcribe the audio using a service like Rev.com. With the transcription you can condense the process into a checklist that contains the major important points of that process. Once you’ve got that finished, not only did you get the work done, but you’ve also defined a process and put yourself ahead of 90% of all bookkeepers. [28:15] The biggest mistake that Ben made in his business was feeling that he was so busy that he need to hire people to take care of all the chaos in his business, but all that resulted in was more chaos. [29:20] You will have to change your mindset as you transition from doing the work to reviewing the work. What got you here isn’t going to get you to where you want to go. [30:35] Start with the processes you like least and that are the most client-facing. Give it time and you will eventually start to enjoy the process. [33:10] Your business is a system and a system is a series of processes that get the work done. The value in the system is in clearly defined processes, especially if you are interested in eventually selling the bookkeeping business that you’re building. [34:30] You have to be committed to the process, it’s always a challenge to do something new or something big. [35:40] Chris is looking at a couple of different software options to help him track what he’s working on but so far he’s been falling back on just using a spreadsheet. Lots of bookkeeping professionals believe all they need is one more app but that’s not necessarily the case. Sometimes you just need what will get the job done. Start mapping out your processes with a pen and paper well before you get to an app or a spreadsheet. Look to the function before you look for a shiny object. [41:10] You don’t want to be dependent on a person to get things done, you want processes that people can do. That way if someone leaves the team, you can move things around without causing chaos trying to find a new perfect person to fill that role. [43:55] A virtual assistant may be just the answer that Chris is looking for. [45:00] Keep your big goals front and center. For Ben, that means a giant whiteboard positioned in front of his desk that keeps his goals and projects always on the top of his mind. Technology is great, but you should lean on your process first. [48:45] When you need to get something done, don’t think of “what”, think of “who”. Who has done what you want to do and how can you talk to them? [50:30] Chris’s wife has been crucial in terms of support for the growth of the business. A common thread for people who have succeeded in the bookkeeping business is having a supportive spouse. [52:05] The ultimate vision for Chris and his wife is to be able to travel in their RV while still running their business from wherever they are.

We discuss Taichi Meditation, Mindfulness and Martial arts training. Beth and her husband have both recently successfully recovered from cancer by following some of the practices and methods in this episode. Between us we have a combined 50+ years in martial arts practice and yes Taichi-chuan (meaning supreme ultimate fist) is a martial art and can be trained in this way. I will include some links to resources and videos in this post. Taichi meditation is just something that happens, it is not only why we do Taichi, there is so much more to it than just meditation. (NB. disclaimer we are not medical doctors or giving any advice) Nathaniel Schooler Well, I'm really excited today because I'm joined by Elizabeth Misner or Beth, as she likes to be known. And I'm going let her introduce herself. I don't like to do that, but I think she's best to that herself. Beth Misner And we are Facebook friends, and so we chat over Facebook. So my official bio is probably not something you're familiar with. Anyway, so I am married to the founder and chief visionary Officer of BNI, the world's largest networking organisation. Ivan Misner started being I in 1985, and I joined BNI and I joined in 1986. So, although we have about a quarter of a million members, 74 countries over 8500 chapters. Now, I've been there from the very beginning when there were only 20 chapters and I was actually one of the early regional directors for BNI, and I got to travel around the United States primarily opening new regions for BNI. However, my founding roots of my life were in healthcare. I was a chiropractic assistant. And so the whole time we were growing be and I was keeping my foot in the door with health care and I have a certification in nutrition. I got into martial arts and so I was able to really help coach the martial artists have the best nutrition that they could with their food, their diet, their supplementation, and then I got into health cleansing and way of, you know, detoxing the body of chemical chemicals that the body holds and people were losing way and getting healthy, getting off medications. And so I really gone and more specialised in helping people create abundant health. I had the chance to help my husband heal completely from prostate cancer. Using the principles that I teach and then not long after that I got the opportunity to help myself heal metastatic breast cancer last year 2017, completely healed with no conventional interventions, no chemo, no radiation, no surgery and in about five months. So what I'm doing now is I'm blending my martial arts with my Tai Chi and Qi Gong instruction with health practices and the medical healing arts including meditation, Qi Gong, sound therapy with healing bowls, and when I'm in and I travel for being I now since the business is has changed a lot and I'm not working in the everyday business. I lead Tai Chi in the morning for our groups that are meeting and training, doing their education and doing their conference. We have Tai Chi and meditation in the morning and then if there's anyone during the day that has a headache or maybe dealing with the time change and struggling, I get in there and help them with energy work and aroma therapy. And we meditate together. So I'm back in my kind of my calling back on my path. And I'm just loving it. And that's where you and I connected. Fluent in both French and English, she has developed a truly global practice. In this podcast we talk about her journey toward holistic natural medicine and the many clients and types of disorders that she treats. I know she perhaps is a different choice for this podcast – but seeing as she does online medicine, I think there are several things we can learn from her.
