Five years ago, actor Giles Panton swung by the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to talk about voicing Iron Man in Marvel Battleworld: Mystery of the Thanostones, the sleighful of Christmas movies in his filmography, what he learned playing the minister of propaganda for the American Reich in Amazon Prime's critically acclaimed dystopian series The Man in the High Castle, and the Barbie commercial that broke up his band. It's a fantastic episode (which you can find in the episode footnotes or wherever you listen to podcasts), but a lot can change in five years. For instance, you can move from being the guy that always loses the girl in the rom-com to the guy who gets her. You can win a Leo Award for Best Performance in an Animation Program for your work in animated horror anthology series Red Iron Road AND a UBCP/ACTRA Award for voicing Carnage and Norman Osborne in Absolute Carnage. You can get an ADHD diagnosis that explains so much of how you move through the world. You can become a dad. In this compelling conversation – at times poignant; at times funny; always authentic and entertaining – Giles reflects on the many changes of the last five years, what it takes to be a leading man, working with Andrea Brooks on Snowy with a Chance of Christmas, pursuing joy, constructing grilled cheese sandwiches, and how his ADHD diagnosis changed his life. Filmmaker Carl Bessai and actor Vincent Gale are legends of the Vancouver screen scene. These two legends have worked together before – Vincent was nominated for a Leo Award for his work in Carl's iconic comedy-drama Fathers & Sons – and their latest collaboration, Field Sketches, screens at VIFF Centre on April 12 and 14 as part of National Canadian Film Week.Carl mined his own life and family history for Field Sketches. Vincent stars as Peter, a middle-aged architect whose business and personal life are imploding. With nothing left to hold him in the city, Peter decides to move to his family farm and spend the winter in Saskatchewan. He soon discovers that pioneer life is much more than he bargained for. And the silence and loneliness play tricks on his imagination. Field Sketches takes its characters and audiences from a gorgeous mid-century modern home in Vancouver, to Peter's rustic family farm in Saskatchewan (played by Carl's family farm), and into the past, to East Germany (played by Berlin). The result is a singular piece of art that is rich with surprises, fleeting and impactful beauty, and insight into what it means to age as an artist, an immigrant, and the descendent of immigrants. In this fascinating conversation, Carl and Vincent reflect on their journey with Field Sketches, and how their own experiences with art align with Peter's journey.Episode sponsor: Directors Guild Of Canada, BC District Council

To say that actress Teagan Vincze's filmography is varied is an understatement. Her lengthy list of credits includes critically acclaimed roles in indie hits – like when she played a compassionate sex worker in Daughter, Anthony Shim's critically acclaimed first feature that screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival, or when she played a fiery adult film star in The Cannon, a nuanced role for which she was nominated for a Leo Award – as well as nuanced performances in an array of studio and network fare, including Dead Boy Detectives, The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story, and a long and growing list of Christmas movies, including A Cowboy Christmas, where we finally got to see her as the romantic lead . [NOTE: This episode was recorded before it was announced that A Cowboy Christmas will be available to view in Canada on Tubi; check our episode footnotes for more information] . No matter the role or genre, Teagan's work is fearless, and lifts roles above any cliches. In this compelling and introspective conversation with Sabrina Rani Furminger, Teagan talks about what she's learned portraying “taboo” roles in multiple screen projects (including Daughter and The Cannon), the importance of intimacy coordinators, and the special magic of her first time as the lead in a holiday rom-com. Welcome back to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Sharlene Royer, the Assistant Stunt Coordinator for utterly brilliant ‘Shogun', which recently won a record-breaking 18 Emmys - including a very well-deserved one for Outstanding Stunt Performance!Based on James Clavell's novel, FX's 'Shōgun' is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village...It is an outstanding drama, available on Hulu in the USA, and on Disney+ in the UK and other territories. It's well worth watching and catching up if you haven't seen it yet, as it appears it will be returning for two more seasons following its record-breaking Emmy win.Born and raised in Quebec to a Haitian mother and French Canadian father, Sharlene was a dancer from the ages of 7 to 18, before moving into modelling and acting. However, following a meeting with legendary Stunt Coordinator, Alan Oliney, she was encouraged to try stunt work, and found her calling. She soon became a very sought-after stunt performer being requested to double stars such as Halle Berry, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Williams and many more.On 'Shōgun', Sharlene discusses her work on the epic drama as Assistant Stunt Coordinator, working alongside her boss (and life-partner) Lauro David Chartrand-Del Valle, developing the hugely complex Emmy-winning “cannon” scene, melding VFX, physical effects and stunts for the “earthquake”, plus location scouting, stunt coordinating in the pandemic and lots more.If that wasn't enough, Sharlene was also Assistant Stunt Coordinator on season one of the hit CBS drama ‘Tracker', for which she became the first Black, Female Stunt Coordinator to win a Leo Award from The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia. She talks about working with lead actor Justin Hartley (and his photographic memory), and also working with Justin alongside guest star Jenson Ackles... who sound like they were as much fun together as you'd expect!Still want more? She also worked on the wonderfully fun DC superhero drama ‘Legends of Tomorrow', performing the stunt work for Hawkgirl, so we touch on that in the interview too! Audacious, poignant, and funny, Novelette is Trying – which will also be released on OUTtv in 2025 – comes to us from the wonderfully creative mind of Giselle Miller, the Jamaican-Canadian writer, showrunner, filmmaker, and three-time Leo Award-nominated actor. His ascent from an impassioned self-learner in dance to an acclaimed choreographer exemplifies dedication and artistic innovation. From the streets of Victoria, British Columbia, Becker's affinity for movement was ignited by the rhythmic pulses of breakdancing and hip-hop during his early teens. By the age of 19, he had already made his choreographic debut, a transition fueled by his experience on the set of "Chicago," a film that won accolades for its choreography. Becker's choreographic imprint spans over 300 projects, including high-profile films like "Deadpool 2," "Disney's Descendants," and the "Twilight" series. His television credits are equally impressive, featuring popular series such as "The Last of Us," "Riverdale," and "American Horror Story: Hotel." His knack for storytelling through dance and the transformation of non-musical works into dynamic musical spectacles speaks to his ingenuity and versatility. His contributions to the art of dance have been recognized with nominations for three world choreography awards and an MTV award victory for "Best Musical Number" in 2021. Moreover, he has been honored with the Leo Award for his outstanding choreographic achievements in film. Expanding beyond choreography, Becker has produced and creatively directed "Canada's Got Talent" and co-produced the Inaugural Celebration for President Joe Biden. His directorial flair was also showcased at the Pan American Games' closing ceremonies in 2015. However, Becker's path was fraught with hardship. He recounts the loss of his home during the financial crisis, a period during which he worked at FAO Schwartz Toy Store. It was this twist of fate that connected him with Kenny Ortega, sparking collaborations that propelled him to new heights. Paul Becker's narrative is more than a chronicle of professional success; it's a source of inspiration, showcasing the fruits of passion, ingenuity, and an unwavering spirit. His ongoing work in the realm of dance and choreography continues to motivate those who dream of a life in the creative arts. Gary plays DJ Ian Leighton, who has spent 45 years volunteering on co-op radio and interviewing many of the great players, but now devotes his 3:00-3:15 AM time slot to finding the greatest guitarists you've never heard of. Forgotten Masters returns for its second season on October 13, and Gary Jones visits the YVR Screen Scene studio to talk Harriman (including his bonkers audition and a potential Stargate SG-1 rewatch podcast), hairpieces, and the forgotten masters we'll meet in season two of Forgotten Masters. Allisa Swanson is an award winning Costume Designer and a film and television veteran with over 25 years of industry experience in the BC film industry. Knowing her calling early on, she moved to Los Angeles, CA after high school where she earned a BFA in Fashion Design & Marketing. She then returned to Vancouver, BC and started her Costume Design career, where she's worked on TV series like The 100, Once Upon a Time and Firefly Lane, to feature films such as The Snow Walker, which earned her a much deserved Leo Award for Best Costume Design. Allisa and I discuss how she and her team bring costume concepts to life, from design and sketching to sourcing and construction, and then right onto set, where you are never free of real time wardrobe adjustments and repairs (try sewing a loose button back onto an actor while 60 crew hover around!) Allisa gives back in so many ways as well with mentorship and workshops, and she is also currently the President for The Canadian Alliance of Film & Television Costume Arts & Design (CAFTCAD), a not-for-profit organization that promotes learning, networking and achievements of Canadian Costume Design.

This week I chatted to Jovanna Burke a multi talented lady based in Vancouver. We chatted about her journey into acting, studying New York, creating your own work, auditions and some fun rapid fire questions. So, grab a coffee and enjoy! BIO: Jovanna grew up in a latino household and spent her childhood playing dress-up and creating characters. Since then she's done many things: graduated from school, met her true love, birthed two children. But she always seems to find herself back in the playroom with her dress-up clothes and her stories. Jovanna co-wrote and starred in her first play, `Gags Life’ in 1986, about a girl who magically and tragically lives in a tent with her mother Moisa on Campground 6 with the rest of her tragic extended family. The show was produced by and performed in the dining room of her family home, and ran every day for a staggering year straight. She was six years old. She followed her passion for storytelling to Walnut Hill School for the Arts as a Dance Major and in her junior year, landed her first professional gig. Dancing with the prestigious Boston Ballet. After an injury forced a major pivot, she continued her education in theatre at Circle in the Square, Weist-Barron Studio in NYC and then Vancouver Film School. Since then Jovanna has performed on stages across North America and accrued many hours on set in many capacities. Most notably acting, choreographing and producing. A couple of her favourites credits are: 'The True Heroines' (Leo Award, CSA Nomination) and 'The Trap' ( Leo Award Nom). With her extensive experience as an actor in film and television (over 45 credits to her name) and producer (The True Heroines, (YouTube + Hulu Plus) Jovanna’s creativity is constantly evolving. Having visualized stories since she was a child, she looks forward to telling important stories that focus on female driven narrative. Instagram: @officialjovanna

Philip Granger is an actor, producer, and educator based in Vancouver. His IMDb filmography goes on for miles, and includes Walt in Neon Rider, Coach Kolaski in Madison, Supernatural, Caprica, Rogue, and Winston in the highly underrated and gone-too-soon Ghost Wars. He won a Gemini Award for his performance in Neon Rider and a 2019 Leo Award for his work opposite Richard Harmon in Jon Silverberg's Woodland. In this deeply moving episode, Philip recalls memorable moments from his lengthy career, reflects on the friendships that have at once anchored and buoyed him along the way (including with the late, great actor Bill Paxton), and pulls back the curtain on working with his screen-partner-turned-brother Richard Harmon in Woodland. (Note: this episode was recorded over Zoom, and is noticeably more compressed than our previous remotely recorded episodes. Although it sounds a bit different, it's still audible and (in our not-so-humble opinion) highly enjoyable!). Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

Vincent Gale is an award-winning actor who has absolutely appeared in your favourite Vancouver series or film. Battlestar Galactica? He was Chief Peter Laird. Stargate Universe? He was Morrison. It's difficult to categorize actor David Lewis. Is he a comic actor? We've certainly seen him be funny: in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency; as Lance in Morning Show Mysteries; as the perplexed dad in half of the commercials that are filmed in Vancouver. But he's also an incredibly powerful dramatic actor, as evidenced by his performance in Unspeakable, Robert Cooper's gripping miniseries about Canada's tainted blood scandal. David has also done his fair share in the horror realm, from Karen Lam's creepy Evangeline to the most recent Child's Play film, in which he faced off with a Chucky doll driven mad by AI. In what YVR Screen Scene Podcast host Sabrina Furminger considers one of her favourite interviews of all time (no joke!), the Leo Award-winning actor reflects on his ability to jump between genres, why redheads are the butt of so many jokes, why Karen Lam wants to kill him in everything, as well as his wacky childhood, elements of which sound like they were written by Martin Scorsese. Rhona Rees always brings the funny: as an on-camera actress; as a voice performer; as a screenwriter. She's been in the business for more than two decades, getting her start at the age of 11 in a film with Australian screen legend Ernie Dingo. These days, she acts in screen and animation projects like Polly Pocket, Wu Assassins, and Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitsu, and she was nominated for a 2018 Leo Award and a 2019 Society of Voice Arts and Sciences Award for Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own, for her work as Beverly "Bev" Gilturtle. Rhona is also the face and star of Shuttlecock, a sports mockumentary in which she played a washed-up badminton player whose Olympic dreams are dashed when her rival smashes a shuttlecock into one of her eyes – and Freya, a dark comedy set in a near-distant future. Rhona wrote the script for Freya, which received funding from Creative BC and the venerable Harold Greenberg Fund. In this hilarious and at times emotional interview, the Australian ex-pat (who – true story – becomes a Canadian citizen during our sponsor break) talks about child stardom, what she learned shouting “cock!” in crowded theatres across North America, filming Freya, and how Canadians can help the humans and animals affected by the Australian bushfires. Rachel is a Leo Award winning screenwriter whose growing list of credits includes episodic fare like This Life, Ghost Wars, The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco, and The Order, as well as short films directed by her partner in life and creativity, Derek Langer. The Pacific Screenwriting Program (PSP) is pleased to announce Writer/Producer/Director Robert Cooper as Showrunner for the 2020 Scripted Series Lab. Cooper will be a mentor to six up-and-coming BC-based screenwriters selected to participate in next year’s program starting in January 2020. With Cooper leading the story room, they will work together to develop his original series in the PSP’s flagship training program now in its second year. Combining real-world story room experience, mentorship, boot camps, workshops and information sessions, the program equips writers with the skills, experience and connections necessary to establish a sustainable career in the province’s dynamic screen industry. The Pacific Screenwriting Program is a collaboration between Netflix, CMPA, the Writer’s Guild of Canada and Creative BC. “We are tremendously excited to welcome Robert Cooper as this year’s showrunner for the Scripted Series Lab. Rob has been a key member of the PSP community from the very outset and has demonstrated time and again his commitment to developing and mentoring upcoming screenwriters,” said Brian Hamilton, PSP Board Chair. “Rob’s track record creating and showrunning world-class television series speaks for itself. We are extremely fortunate to work with him as this year’s SSL showrunner.” Robert Cooper most recently created, wrote and directed episodes of CBC’s Unspeakable, following Canada’s tainted blood scandal. A lifelong dream project, the mini-series recently won the Leo Award for best dramatic series. Previously, he served as showrunner of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency for BBC America, Netflix and AMC Studios, and is probably best known for having been showrunner of the record-breaking Stargate television franchise for MGM. He co-created Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe and served as executive producer, writer, and director of multiple episodes of all three series and two DTV movies. Cooper has been nominated and won several awards for both writing and directing, including two Hugo nominations and a Canadian Writer’s Guild award for best dramatic screenplay. In 2009, he was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award for contribution to the British Columbia television industry. “It’s an amazing opportunity for me to develop an original idea with a room of eager, talented minds,” said Cooper. “Everyone involved with the PSP wants to see a more vibrant community of experienced screenwriters able to work and ultimately create home grown television series right here in BC. The passion for storytelling is clear in the applicants for this year’s program. I'm looking forward to us learning from each other.” The Scripted Series Lab is a 15-week intensive training program providing support and career- advancement opportunities for active and aspiring screenwriters from across British Columbia, where they receive the necessary support to expand their portfolio and pursue opportunities in the evolving TV marketplace. Throughout the program, participants hone their craft, strengthen their collaboration and presentation skills, and obtain a deeper understanding of the global television industry and how to market themselves within it. As the Scripted Series Lab showrunner, Cooper will mentor the six selected participants within a real-world story room over 10 weeks, breaking stories and writing scripts for the original project he brings to the room and will subsequently be pitching to streamers and networks around the world. Join our super duper host Galaxy as he goes close and personal with the cool villain Brendon Zub from CW's newest hit show Batwoman. Brendon Zub is a Canadian actor whose life adventures and diverse skill set have helped him carve out a unique career and emerge as a sought after and versatile actor. This fall Brendon can be seen playing Chuck Dodgson in the highly anticipated CW series "Batwoman" which brings Bruce Wayne's cousin Kate Kane, to the Arrowverse. Born in Vancouver, Brendon's family soon moved to Calgary, Alberta where he grew up as a Pastor's kid, class clown, and sports junkie, channeling most of his energy into becoming a professional baseball player. However, at age 10 his family moved to Hungary as missionaries where his dreams of baseball were quickly replaced with soccer, basketball, and embracing a new culture. Here his love of acting was born while watching old Classic Hollywood era movies on the sole English-speaking channel. But it wasn't until being transferred to an international boarding school in Germany where he began to hone his acting skill with drama class and a lead role in the High school play. Realizing he had a better chance at acting than pro sports, Brendon set his sights on pursuing an acting career. Brendon can be recognized from numerous roles on TV such as ABC's "The Good Doctor", FOX's "Fringe", The CW's "Supernatural", "iZombie", "Emily Owens", "The 100" and "The Flash" and more recently starred in The CW's re-imagination of "Charmed" and A&E's highly anticipated series "Blue Book". He has also starred in various Hallmark movies, most notably "The Christmas Calendar" in which he starred opposite Laura Bell Bundy and received a 2018 Leo Award nomination for Best Lead Actor. Off Camera, Brendon can be found scuba diving off BC's coast, skiing in Whistler, playing hockey, training Brazilian Jiujitsu, or roaming bookstores for the latest in high fantasy. Niall Matter grew up on a dairy farm and worked on oil rigs until an accident forced him to confront the fact that he really wanted to be was an actor. Fast-forward a few years, and Niall is living his dream. He played a bad-boy genius on Eureka and a bad boy inventor on Primeval New World. In recent years, Niall has become a go-to leading man in the Hallmark realm. He portrays a college professor named Nick Miller in the Aurora Teagarden movies, acting opposite Candace Cameron Bure (Full House) – and earlier this year, he won the Leo Award for Best Lead Performance By A Male in a Television Movie for Frozen in Love. Niall spoke with Sabrina Furminger about his remarkable origin story, working in sci-fi and on the Hallmark Channel, and why he considers himself a member of the crew first and foremost.
One of Johannah Newmarch's first roles was an episode of 21 Jump Street where her character asked Johnny Depp's if he wanted to “get it on” – and shortly after that, she left the acting business for nearly a decade. Johannah says now that she needed to walk away from acting in order to really commit to it – and in 2001, she felt able to do just that. Since then, Johannah has shone in dozens of roles in big budget and indie projects, including Smallville, Supernatural, Motive, Polaris (for which she won the 2014 Leo Award for Best Performance by a Female in a Web Series), Gracepoint, and multiple Garage Sale Mystery films. Johannah played the Big Bad in the second season of Netflix's Project Mc², she plays Molly Sullivan in Hallmark's hit family drama, When Calls the Heart – and this holiday season, you'll be able to see her working her sharpened claws and sky-high heels as the evil step-mama in A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish. In this engrossing and often emotional interview with Sabrina Furminger, Johannah talks about walking away from the biz, her profound love for the #Hearties, how she deals with dark nights of the soul, playing Doc Holliday in Last Stand to Nowhere, and how to pronounce her name.
Veena Sood comes from a culture where girls are told to keep quiet. But Veena has a big voice, and she chooses to use it to teach, to perform, and to inspire, both as an improviser and as an in-demand actress. Over the course of her illustrious career, Veena has played comedic and dramatic roles in feature films like The Accused, Anne Wheeler's Loyalties, and Welcome to Marwen, television shows like Ghost Wars, The Indian Detective, and Corner Gas Animated, and web series like Yoga Town. In recent years, Veena has been recognized for her craft by her community: with UBCP/ACTRA's Sam Payne Award in 2014, the Lorena Gale Woman of Distinction Award in 2017, and a 2018 Leo Award nomination for Best Performance in a Music, Comedy, or Variety Program or Series for playing the principal of a school that's hired a robot to teach a kindergarten class in Android Employed. In this poignant and often hilarious episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Veena reflects on her childhood as a brown girl with a big voice, talks about how things have changed for South Asian actors since she entered the biz, and explains why she really, really wants to play a cowgirl.
Lee Majdoub played Silas Dengdamor on BBC America's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. The role was a dream come true for Lee, who – as an actor of Middle Eastern descent – never thought he'd have the chance to play a Prince Charming type character, let alone a soulful prince from a magical realm who was head over heels for another prince (played by a pink-haired Christopher Russell). Lee won a Leo Award for playing Silas, and he also scooped up a couple of film festival awards for playing an actor of colour in The Prince, Kyra Zagorsky's short film about the challenges faced by Middle Eastern and North African actors in Hollywood. Next February, Lee will hit the big screen in another dream role: that of Agent Stone in the highly anticipated feature film Sonic the Hedgehog. In this deeply personal and slightly off-kilter episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast (Lee and Sabrina do bad impressions of Sabrina's dad! Sabrina's computer has a meltdown!), Lee talks about Middle Eastern stereotypes, what it meant to him to play Silas on Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and act opposite Jim Carrey in Sonic the Hedgehog, and why he's committed to speaking out about his journey with depression. Also: cats!
Paul McGillion is one of the busiest actors in the Vancouver screen scene, but he's also something of an enigma. Yes, he built a globe-spanning fan base playing Dr. Carson Beckett on Stargate Atlantis, but he's played dozens of other characters in numerous television series and films, too. Recent additions to the Paul McGillion filmography include the Bollywood dance film Heartbeats, the Jason Momoa period piece Frontier, the critically acclaimed CBC miniseries Unspeakable (about Canada's tainted blood scandal), The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco, and The Flash (on which he plays Earl Cox, and for which he was nominated for a 2019 Leo Award for Best Guest Performance Male Dramatic Series). So what exactly is a Paul McGillion role? In this wildly entertaining episode, Paul attempts to answer Sabrina Furminger's burning question, while also reflecting on his time on Stargate Atlantis, his childhood, sci-fi conventions, and his longtime friendship with Tom Cavanagh (Ed; The Flash).
Chelah Horsdal recently wrapped on the fourth and final season of The Man in the High Castle, Amazon Prime's gripping adaptation of Philip K. Dick's alternate history novel. Chelah plays Helen Smith, a citizen of the Greater Nazi Reich of New York and wife of SS-Obergruppenführer John Smith (portrayed by Rufus Sewell). Helen is a complicated woman – a fascist with beliefs that don't necessarily align with Chelah's or most viewers – and yet she still manages to inspire empathy and compassion in audiences. That's the magic of Chelah Horsdal, and why she received the Leo Award in 2017 for Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series for her High Castle role. In this provocative and at times emotional interview with Sabrina Furminger, the veteran actress reflects on her colourful career, her #MeToo and animal activism, and what it was like to grow up the daughter of Canadian folk music legend Valdy.

Photo credit: Véro Boncompagni Check out the trailer of their new NFB film Ninth Floor making its world premiere at TIFF 2015. Synopsis of Film It started quietly when a group of Caribbean students, strangers in a cold new land, began to suspect their professor of racism. It ended in the most explosive student uprising Canada had ever known. Over four decades later, Ninth Floor reopens the file on the Sir George Williams Riot – a watershed moment in Canadian race relations and one of the most contested episodes in the nation’s history. It was the late 60s, change was in the air, and a restless new generation was claiming its place– but nobody at Sir George Williams University would foresee the chaos to come. On February 11, 1969, riot police stormed the occupied floors of the main building, making multiple arrests. As fire consumed the 9th floor computer centre, a torrent of debris rained onto counter-protesters chanting racist slogans – and scores of young lives were thrown into turmoil. Making a sophisticated and audacious foray into meta-documentary, writer and director Mina Shum meets the original protagonists in clandestine locations throughout Trinidad and Montreal, the wintry city where it all went down. And she listens. Can we hope to make peace with such a painful past? What lessons have we learned? What really happened on the 9th floor? In a cinematic gesture of redemption and reckoning, Shum attends as her subjects set the record straight – and lay their burden down. Cinematography by John Price evokes a taut sense of subterfuge and paranoia, while a spacious soundscape by Miguel Nunes and Brent Belke echoes with the lonely sound of the coldest wind in the world. Mina Shum: Biography Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, Mina Shum is an independent filmmaker and artist. “I’m the child of the Praxis Screenwriting Workshop, Cineworks Independent Film Co-op, the Canadian Film Centre and working class immigrant parents,” she says. With Ninth Floor, a production of the National Film Board of Canada, Shum has written and directed her fourth feature film and first feature documentary. Her first feature Double Happiness (1994) – developed while she was resident director at the Canadian Film Centre – premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won a Special Jury Citation for Best Canadian Feature Film and the Toronto Metro Media Prize. It went on to win Best First Feature at the Berlin Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Torino Film Festival. Following its American premiere at Sundance, it was released theatrically in the U.S. by Fine Line/New Line Features. It was nominated for multiple Genie Awards, Canada’s top film honour, winning Best Actress for Sandra Oh, and Best Editing for Alison Grace. Shum’s second and third features – Drive, She Said (1997) and Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity (2002) – also premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity was subsequently invited to both Sundance and the Vancouver Film Festival, where it won a Special Citation for Best Screenplay (shared with co-writer Dennis Foon). It was released theatrically in Canada and the U.S. Shum’s short films include Shortchanged; Love In; Hunger; Thirsty; Me, Mom and Mona, which won a Special Jury Citation the 1993 Toronto Film Festival; Picture Perfect, nominated for Best Short Drama at the Yorkton Film Festival; and most recently I Saw Writer’s Guild Award. Her TV work ranges from Mob Princess, a TV movie produced for Brightlight Pictures/W Network, to episodic directing on About A Girl, Noah’s Arc, Exes and Oh’s, Bliss, The Shield Stories and Da Vinci’s Inquest. Shum’s interests extend beyond film and television. Her immersive video installation You Are What You Eat was held over at the Vancouver Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Centre A, and her cinematic theatre piece All, created in collaboration with the Standing Wave Music Ensemble, was presented at the 2011 Push Festival. She has hosted sold-out events for the experimental Pecha Kucha program, and her Internet hit Hip Hop Mom was featured in Calgary’s official Canada Day celebrations. In 2004 she was invited to deliver the inaugural UBC/Laurier Institute Multicultural Lecture, entitled New Day Rising: Journey of a Hyphenated Girl, and in 2011 she was the recipient of the Sondra Kelly Writer’s Guild of Canada Award. She is currently preparing her next feature, Meditation Park. Selwyn Jacob: Biography Selwyn Jacob was born in Trinidad and came to Canada in 1968 with the dream of becoming a filmmaker. It was a dream that wouldn’t die: he became a teacher and eventually a school principal but eventually chose to leave the security of that career to educate a wider audience through film. He has been a producer with the National Film Board of Canada since 1997. His early work as an independent director includes We Remember Amber Valley, a documentary about the black community that existed near Lac La Biche in Alberta. Prior to joining the NFB, he directed two award-winning NFB releases – Carol’s Mirror, and The Road Taken, which won the Canada Award at the 1998 Gemini Awards. On NBC’s “Outlaw,” Carly Pope plays Lucinda Pearl, a wildly unorthodox private investigator who uses her sex appeal and wit to gather information for Cyrus Garza (Jimmy Smits). Pope has recurred on critically acclaimed television shows such as “24,” “Dirt” and “Californication.” On the feature-film side, Pope recently wrapped the sequel to “SWAT” opposite Gabriel Macht. She can also be seen in “Textuality” as the lead opposite Eric McCormack. Prior to that, she starred in the controversial Toronto International Film Festival favorite, “Young People F****.” Many also remember Pope opposite Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey in “Two For the Money” and alongside Colin Hanks and Jack Black in “Orange County.” Pope got an early start in her hometown of Vancouver, B.C. with various television and film work before landing the plum role of Sam on the series “Popular,” which aired for two years, launching her career. After “Popular” was cancelled, Pope returned to Vancouver where she continued to win new fans and impress industry insiders and the media with her insightful and sensitive portrayals. Pope is a Leo Award winner for her work on the series “The Collector.” Starring Emmy Award winner Jimmy Smits ("NYPD Blue," "The West Wing"), "Outlaw" is a new drama from creator and executive producer John Eisendrath ("Alias," "Felicity"). Few jobs are guaranteed for a lifetime, and a Supreme Court appointment is a position that no one ever quits -- unless he is Cyrus Garza (Smits). A playboy and a gambler, Justice Garza always adhered to a strict interpretation of the law until he realized the system he believed in was flawed. Now, he's quit the bench and returned to private practice. Using his inside knowledge of the justice system, Garza and his team will travel across the country taking on today's biggest and most controversial legal cases.
