In today's episode, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein shares her story of growing up in a home where fast food was the norm. As her dependence on food grew, her parents sent her to what she calls “fat camp.” That's where she had the life-changing realization: “You only get one body.” From that moment, Ilana began making small, consistent changes that led to losing over 100 pounds, and keeping it off. Now she leads a community of over 300,000 people who are learning to have a healthier, more joyful relationship with food. In our conversation, we talk about the impact of giving kids a sugar-loaded diet on physical and mental health - how it affects their mood, focus, and energy for the rest of the day. Ilana shares the two parenting patterns she sees most often when it comes to food—letting kids eat whatever they want or reacting out of frustration instead of planning ahead—and how to instead learn how to . She offers practical, realistic tips for raising balanced eaters, teaching kids about carbs, protein, and energy in ways that make sense to them. We also explore how nutrition affects not just physical health, but mental health, confidence, and the parent-child relationship. If you've ever wondered how to help your kids make better food choices without turning every meal into a battle, this episode is full of encouragement and easy, actionable ideas. Youth sports have evolved from casual neighborhood games to a multi-billion-dollar industry where kids are often treated as commodities. In this episode, Brian Smith and Ed Uszynski, authors of Away Game: A Christian Parent's Guide to Navigating Youth Sports, delve into how today's sports culture is pressuring kids to perform rather than enjoy play. They reflect on the rise of elite programs, the loss of amateurism, and the overwhelming influence of money on what was once a simple, joyful part of childhood. With raw honesty, they discuss the impact of this commercialization on kids' mental health, relationships, and desire to continue participating in sports. As parents, we are often caught in a cycle of pushing our kids to be the best, sometimes at the expense of their happiness and self-worth. Brian and Ed share the “silent killer” of kids' love for sports— the dreaded car ride home after the game, where criticism often replaces celebration. They discuss why it's crucial to shift the focus from winning at all costs to fostering character, emotional resilience, and healthy self-expression. Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation about reclaiming joy, the importance of play, and how we, as parents, can break free from the youth sports industrial complex to allow our children to truly thrive. In this episode, I'm joined by clinical psychologist Dr. Emily Kline for a deep dive into motivational interviewing—an approach to communication that helps parents move from fixing and convincing to connecting and collaborating. We talk about how to have hard conversations (think: hygiene, responsibility, and independence) in a way that respects our kids' autonomy and actually opens the door to change. Emily brings nearly 20 years of experience working with families, has taught at Boston University and Harvard Medical School, and is the author of The School of Hard Talks. She shares practical, compassionate insights that any parent navigating the teen and young adult years will find incredibly useful. About Dr. Emily Kline Dr. Emily Kline is a clinical psychologist with nearly 20 years of experience working with individuals and families in community mental health settings. She has published dozens of articles appearing in a range of peer-reviewed scholarly journals, textbooks, and popular magazines, and she has spoken with audiences all over the world about mental health and communication. Dr. Kline completed her bachelor's degree at Haverford College, her master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and her clinical and post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School. It's simultaneously wonderful and worrying to launch a kid. The most common denominator question is a version of this: Are they going to be ok when they leave us? We hope – and wonder – if we've taught them enough to be out in the world. Christina Geist spent her oldest child's senior year of high school compiling those life lessons in Before You Fly Away. Her musings are as heartfelt as they are practical, whether you have a child who is about to fly the nest, one who flew away long ago, or one so young you can hardly imagine that stage of life. Jaimie sits down with Brian Rosenberg, longtime advocate, dad of three, and founder of Gays With Kids and GWK Academy. From navigating HIV and homophobia in the '80s to building a beautiful family through adoption and surrogacy, Brian shares his powerful story with honesty, humor, and heart. He opens up about the challenges of coming out as HIV-positive before coming out as gay, what it was like to raise kids during a time when queer family building had very little visibility, and why he's now dedicated to making the process easier for all LGBTQIA+ folks looking to become parents. You'll laugh, cry, and walk away feeling a little more seen. “I'm one of the first out gay men living with HIV to have biological kids through surrogacy. In this eye-opening episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, Dr. Madeline Levine, one of the leading voices in parenting, returns for her second appearance to share vital insights on how anxiety is stunting both children and parents in today's fast-paced world. From hyper-parenting to the pursuit of perfection, Dr. Levine explores the damage done when we allow our own worries to dictate how we parent, urging us to embrace a long-term view on success. With over 45 years of experience in child development, she offers invaluable wisdom on how play, emotional intelligence, and resilience should take precedence over grades and accolades. As she puts it, “Healthy development takes more than high grades,” and “Kids are entitled to a childhood.” Dr. Levine emphasizes the crucial role parents play in fostering autonomy in their children—ultimately creating a sense of security and self-reliance that can only come from a thriving home environment. She champions the idea that enthusiasm, creativity, and a rich sense of purpose in parents are key to raising resilient, well-rounded kids. Parents, she reminds us, are entitled to a life of their own, and when they model a thriving, well-balanced existence, their children are empowered to do the same. This episode is a powerful call to shift our focus from external pressures to what really matters: the health, happiness, and well-being of our families in an uncertain world. Parenting Without Guilt: How to Reconnect with Your Kids (at Any Age) with Jennifer Kolari "I want to be more present with my kids, but work always pulls me away." Are you a strong leader at work but feel like you're failing at home? You want to be more present with your kids, but they shut down when you try to talk, and you don't know how to fix it. Are you doing everything you can, but it still doesn't feel like enough? Licensed child and family therapist Jennifer Kolari understands this struggle first-hand. As founder of Connected Parenting, she's discovered that deep emotional connection, not control, is the key to raising resilient children. What she teaches might surprise you: the very moments when things are the most difficult are actually your greatest opportunities to build resilience and trust. Your Child's Brain Is Under Construction Worried you're screwing up your child without realizing it? This thought often stems from a misunderstanding about how children's brains work. Jennifer explains that children don't have fully functioning frontal lobes until around age 25. So you're not just a parent. You're a "substitute frontal lobe." When your child melts down, it's not defiance—it's neurobiology. Connection Is Medicine Jennifer's CALM technique triggers oxytocin release—the "love drug" that speeds learning, strengthens immunity, blocks stress hormones, and builds resilience. The best part? You get these benefits too. It's Never Too Late Whether your child is 5 or 25, it's never too late. Connection can transform any relationship, starting with small moments. Episode Highlights Understanding Your Child: [3:51] - Jennifer's origin story with traumatized children [19:47] - How oxytocin rewires your child's brain [22:57] - Why you're a "substitute frontal lobe" The CALM Technique: [27:50] - You can't regulate your child if you're not regulated [31:11] - Four steps of connecting before correcting [32:25] - Affect matching without escalating Real-World Application: [39:49] - CALM technique examples in action [42:51] - Using self-compassion when you mess up Powerful Quotes "Our children are our greatest teachers. Every emotional trigger, every piece of conditioning, all of the things that we did not resolve in our childhood will show up with our children." —Blake Schofield "Children are not mini-adults. Their brains are under construction. You are a substitute frontal lobe." —Jennifer Kolari Resources Mentioned Connect with Jennifer Kolari: https://www.connectedparenting.com/ The "5 Shifts of Parenting" That Bring You More Connection, Freedom and JOY as a Parent (FREE WEBINAR): https://www.connectedparenting.com/webinar The Connected Parenting Podcast, sharing weekly science-backed techniques on how to parent your sensitive children: https://www.connectedparenting.com/podcast Enter the Giveaway + Win Prizes!
