While many companies are reshoring, many others are nearshoring to Mexico. How does a company make the decision to reshore or nearshore production? There are several commercial border crossings between the US and Mexico. Why is Laredo so important? What are the statistics about goods in cross-border trade? I know that you spent some time in Laredo two weeks ago. Why were you there and what did you see? Are there restrictions on trucks moving across the border in either direction? Chief Owens interviews Border Patrol Agent Josh Guell. Our Veterans Day Special Edition! Border Patrol Agent Joshua D. Guell, born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is currently serving at the Laredo West Station in the Laredo Sector. He entered duty on October 15, 2007 after graduating from the 720th session of the U.S. Border Patrol Academy, 2nd in his class. After 11 years of working with the Border Patrol, he applied his firsthand knowledge of the hardships returning veterans experience after deployment to create the Veterans Support Program (VSP) in March 2017. The program assists veterans employed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and their families. Up-to-date, VSP has assisted with thousands of veteran-related issues; assisting CBP employees on and off-duty. His effort was the catalyst to drive a concept to assist a few veterans in Laredo Texas to becoming a CBP pilot program, nationwide. BPA Guell has a distinguished career proudly serving nine years, five tours in Iraq and Afghanistan with the elite U.S. Army Rangers before joining the U.S. Border Patrol. During his time in the military, he played a vital role in several significant operations. These include the Battle of Haditha Dam during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Along with providing flood control and a third of Iraq's electrical generation capacity, the dam provided the only other crossing of the Euphrates River west of Baghdad. U.S. Army Rangers seized the Haditha Dam in April 2003 and prevented Iraqi forces from destroying it with some of the most intense fighting and largest use of enemy artillery since World War II. In the summer of 2005, he was also part of Operation Red Wings II, which lasted approximately three weeks. During this time, Guell's team recovered the bodies of deceased SEALs and Army Special Operations aviators and rescued the only surviving member of the team, Marcus Luttrell. During his time in the military, Mr. Guell earned several commendations and medals for his bravery and outstanding duty. These include the Army Staff Identification Badge for his distinguished service to the Office of the Secretary of the Army during the almost three years he spent working at the Pentagon. The Bronze Star Medal, with the “V" device which is an award for heroism and valor in combat instead of for meritorious service or achievement in a combat zone. He was also awarded the Valorous Unit Award (VUA), the second highest United States military unit decoration that may be bestowed upon a military unit after the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC). Other awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, and other awards. While at the Border Patrol Academy, Mr. Guell was given the second overall in academics award, top shooter award, and twice awarded for leadership of his classmates. Because of his work with veterans in the Border Patrol through the VSP, on June 18, 2018, the City of Laredo recognized Border Patrol Agent (BPA) Joshua Guell as Veteran of the Month. On May 14, 2016 he was also recognized by U.S. House of Representative Henry Cuellar for his acts of courage while in the line of duty as a Border Patrol agent and awarded the Commissioners Life Saving award along with the Border Patrol Achievement Medal with “V” device. Mr. Guell is married and has 2 children and is a devout Christian and a member of Grace Bible Church for over 13 years. He also likes to attend/host Bible studies and help Churches in the Laredo community during his off time.

Alfonso Marquez writes: "I was born in Juarez, Mexico on December 27, 1961. I grew up there until the age of 17 when I received a scholarship to go to study at a Normal School (School to prepare Teachers). I finished and practice for only 6 months in Mexico City. I returned to Juárez on December 1979. In January 1980 I decided to get across the border to work in Las Cruces New Mexico and at the same time studied at Las Cruces High School. I tried to enroll with the US Navy, but because of my status (undocumented) I was not able to serve. I travel around the US looking for opportunities to experience the American Dream. In March 23, 1983 I met my now beautiful wife Martha in Juárez. I used to go back to Juárez every Christmas. Martha and I decided to live together in the US Elizabeth was only 3. In September of 1983 we come to live in the Rio Grande Valley in a little town name Weslaco from there we travel to west Texas, to south Colorado and back to the Valley of Texas following the seasonal work harvesting crops. Our daughter Martha born in Hereford, Texas in July 1984. In 1988 we moved to Laredo Texas I received an offer to have a steady job and Martha was tired of moving from place to another, she wanted stability. Alfonso Jr born in December 1988. In 1992 after been working and managing a business for someone else, I decided to start my own business. In August 18, 1994 I got saved and our lives really turn 180 degrees. Abraham born in 1996 in a Christian home. In 1997 we received Christian and Claudia two kids from Martha's sister who got very sick and could not care for them we decided to help and latter we adopted them legally. In 1998 I started driving for CFI out of Joplin MO. In May of 1999 Alfonso Jr and I met Rev. Leonard Turner at the Petro Truck Stop on exit 369 on I-40. He invited me to start a Hispanic ministry because God put in his heart to outreach the Hispanic community, after talking with the NCD director Lynn Thomas he was told that he can not start a Hispanic ministry so he needed to pray for a Hispanic leader, and here we go again. After we met Leonard at the truck stop Leonard invited us to worship at Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church, after the service Leonard took us around the community and to a Mexican restaurant in Kingston Pike named Monterey. We ordered good authentic Mexican food and talked to the restaurant personal. When Pastor Leonard took us back to the truck stop, he noticed my nickname was “Preacher “ Leonard asked why I had that nickname. I told him that i thought God was calling me to the ministry but I didn't have a place. Leonard told me you might have a place here in East TN. I told him that I didn't have theological preparation I only have the desire to serve. Leonard told me we may send you to school, he was talking about PAS. We left to delivered our load to Ohio and return home to Laredo. Two weeks later I received a letter from Pastor Leonard inviting me to be interview by East TN presbytery Board of Missions (BOM), then I took it seriously and shared that with my home church Pastor in Laredo we were and still members of ICM Iglesia Cristiana Misericordia of Laredo Texas an Assemblies of God a 3000 church members congregation (Pentecostal). I talked to my pastor about the possibility to moved to East TN and start a Hispanic ministry but I didn't know anything about Presbyterianism, neither Cumberland Presbyterians. My Pastor asked if I had shared that call with Martha and my 6 children because the ministry covers the whole family even our dog. I was concern about the liberal way of Presbyterians and as Pentecostals we were very conservative. I remember my preacher's wife saying “go and do it like Paul, be Greek with Greeks, Roman with Romans and Jew with Jews, and don't forget the gentiles. In September 1999 we receive a letter with a couple of plane tickets on a weekend because the Presbytery BOM wanted to interview us. We came and experienced great things and later on about in November we received an approved letters from East TN Presbytery's Task Force form by session members of Union and BOM to start our ministry immediately after 2YK. We left Laredo on January 19, 2000 and arrived to East TN on January 21st. I attended Program of Alternate Studies (PAS) from 2000-2004 got ordained on April 2004. After that I translated for new Hispanic PAS students from 2005-2006. Under the leadership of Dr Thomas Campbell asked me if I was willing to coordinate the Hispanic PAS and called me Hispanic PAS coordinator from 2007-2012 I taught several courses and help Dr. Robert Rush ask me to translate our Confession of Faith to Spanish we did it with the help of other Colombian brothers and sisters. I served as consultant for the BOM of our denomination to start and register our Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Mexico from 2007-2012.I had the blessing of watching many of my Hispanic brothers and sisters in Christ graduating from PAS. I served as board member of the Children's Home three times 9 years. I resigned in 2012. I been serving our community for 21 years now. I teach ESL, GED, help with Immigration documents, IRS, Social Security and many, many other things, just to stay busy."Music is provided by Pierce Murphy, Caldera Blue. This week, we spoke with Shellee Laurent: an activist, artist, mother, and a proud Guatemalan-Mexican-American woman/queen living in Laredo TX. We first met Shellee during our visit to to Laredo in 2018. We stayed connected via social media and then profiled her on our Laredo on the Line publication. We wanted to speak with Shellee here as well, to find out more about how her roles intersect and learn about her work with the No Border Wall Coalition. This episode is another installment in the COVID catch-up series…I’ve been chatting with past guests on Planet Noun—to find out how they’ve been faring during this rough year. This time, I’m catching up with someone I met a couple of years ago while working as a reporter. We met at a street festival in Washington, D.C., and I wanted to interview him for a radio story I was going to file with the radio station. That’s where it started, and we’ve been chatting online about him coming on the show. THEN...the pandemic hit, so that stalled everything for a while. But, here he is! Rodd Quinn is his name. It was totally intrigued because during the interview for work, I found out he was a traveling artist. Look, by now, you know that anyone who has the courage to follow their dreams fully -- fascinates me! Well, let’s get to it with Rodd Quinn. He joined Planet Noun via Zoom from Laredo Texas. He shares his story of how life presented with him with a passion for art--and what he's chosen to do with it!
St. Patrick Catholic Church, Laredo Texas
Transportation and Fake Truckers. Troy chipped his tooth in church. Ruthann is still getting birthday wishes and oh yeah, trucking news. These are some of the things TalkCDL talked about on this weeks episode of the trucking podcast. CDLlife.com recently ran a story about two men that tried to steal a load of nuts right from the processing plant in California. The two men went as far as to find a couple of truckers online just to steal their names. They then made up phony paperwork to pose as a legitimate trucking-company picking up a load. Tune in and hear TalkCDL’s opinions on this story or head over to CDL Life and read all the details in full. TRANSPORTATION AND FAKE TRUCKERS Scammer posing as hot chics on TalkCDL’s Facebook page. Ruthann brought up the recent activity on social media pages. The scam goes like this. A con artist sits behind his computer posing as a very attractive woman. He starts up conversations on blogs that have many truck drivers interacting. He/she asks an unsuspecting trucker if he would like to be friends. Eventually finding a lonely desperate truck driver, the scammer begins his assault. The ultimate goal is to get money sent to him via the desperate lonely trucker. If you are approached on the internet by a very attractive woman, do not fall for it. There has been many men that have fallen prey to these scammers. A man was recently arrested carrying illegal drugs in his semi-trailer. O=Caught at the border on the Laredo TX area, the man fessed up. Once in custody he told authorities that his wife had been kidnapped and the kidnappers were forcing him to run drugs into the USA. Of course the mans lies all came to an end when authorities were able to contact his wife, at her home, safe and secure. From Jan to July this year, Mexico is the top trading partner of the United States, with two-way trade totaling $290.6 billion. With such increase of activities, here come bottle neck and in-balance challenges. For examples, at the cross-border point in El Paso TX, the load to truck ratio is as high as 8:1 while the ratio at Laredo TX skyrocketed to 15:1 (number of loads per truck). Since USMCA (United States Mexico Canada Agreement) is new (since July 2020), many people are trying to figure out their supply chain impact and future planning, and currently there is significantly less freight going into Mexico, meaning lack of drivers situation from Mexico to USA. Some drivers (who live in Mexico or US) are trying cross the border to drive for their next truckloads are often stuck in the borders waiting for hours (due to Covid-19 related additional inspections) and eventually give up and return home, amplifying driver shortage issue. Of course, recent weather uncertainty (hurricanes and storms) and surge of eCommerce and consumer behavior changes due to Covid-19 are adding additional complexity. Will it be a new norm for US/MX cross-border? How can multi-stakeholders including governments work together to improve the situation? We had a fascinating interview with Gubio Henrique - SVP at Redwood Logistics, Larry Hotz - Marketing Director at Woodfield Distribution, and Professor Tom Fullerton at University of Texas at El Paso.
Estaba encorvada y no podía enderezarse.
