In the 200th episode of the AABP Have you Herd? podcast, AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Jessican Klabnik, a theriogenologist on faculty at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Klabnik was one of the authors on a paper published in the Online First edition of the Bovine Practitioner. This case series paper evaluated the surgical success and reproductive performance of bulls undergoing surgery for correction of penile deviation.Klabnik reviews penile deviation syndrome in bulls which can include spiral, ventral or sigmoid deviations due to an abnormality in the dorsal apical ligament. Surgical correction or culling are the only management considerations for these bulls; however, there is a lack of peer-reviewed data on the outcomes from surgical correction. Klabnik discusses some of the challenges with collecting data from these 25 cases with 10 cases meeting the inclusion criteria for the study. The surgery does not have a high risk of complications and was deemed successful in seven out of the ten bulls evaluated. Of these seven, six bulls achieved intromission and five sired progeny. Although this study represents a small number of cases, the surgery appears to have a 50:50 success rate, but due to the low risk of complications, bulls that do not successfully return to herd sire capabilities can still be culled for salvage value. This case series report can help to guide veterinarians performing bull breeding soundness exams when they observe a penile deviation, and also help veterinarians in private practice or referral institutions when evaluating bulls as surgical candidates.Mossallam, A. F., Schumaker, O. J., Mulon, P.-Y., Dohlman, T. M., Meisner, M. D., Jarrin-Yepez, P., Anderson, D. E., Rush, J. B., Prado, T. M., Armstrong, C. L., & Klabnik, J. L. (2024). Have you ever had a question you thought … “OOOO! That's an Archimedes in waiting that is!”. Well, join in the footsteps of those who have climbed the craggy path through submission, review, Editorial Board and onwards to the sunny pastures of ‘Online First' and eventually the Paper Journal (where, like one of our colleagues, your Gran can try and order one from the newsagents because she's so proud of you). The Grannies being delighted this month will be able to learn all about if their migrainous adolescent grandchildren will benefit from magnesium to reduce their headache frequency of severity (https://adc.bmj.com/content/106/10/1027), and far from benign taught to suck eggs they may have their perception of weaning foods challenged when it comes to egg introduction to the diet of four month olds (https://adc.bmj.com/content/106/10/1024.1). Their wisdom will be already full of the knowledge that just because something's always been this way doesn't make it right, but they may like to hear about how we think momentum and inertia apply in medicine too (and here's the ship-related podcast that's mentioned: https://timharford.com/2019/11/cautionary-tales-ep-1-danger-rocks-ahead/) https://adc.bmj.com/content/106/10#Archimedes https://adc.bmj.com/content/106/10/1024.2

Waarom investeren in retail? Many athletic events, such as the current Wimbledon Tennis Championships, are staged in hot to very hot environmental conditions. Clinicians should be aware of the risks posed to athletes competing under heat stress and how to mitigate them. Dr. Julien Périard is a former successful triathlete and now works at Aspetar, Qatar, as a senior research scientist investigating athletic performance under heat stress conditions. BJSM's Liam West (@Liam_West) poses questions about what heat illness encompasses, what signs and symptoms to look for and how to take care of athletes. See the 2015 Consensus Statement on Training and Competing in the Heat via BJSM's Online First http://bit.ly/1CfQLCj The Consensus Statement will be published in BJSM issue 15 which goes live on July 16, 2015 (http://bjsm.bmj.com/) Primary Link; Racinais S, ..., & Périard J. Author Alessandra González discusses her recent article in Feminist Criminology, “How Women Engage Homegrown Terrorism.” The article, co-authored by Joshua Freilich and Steven Chermak, appears in the special November issue of the journal, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the American Society of Criminology’s Division on Women and Crime. Abstract: U.S. Extremist Crime Database (ECDB) Study data of homicides by far-right extremists and arsons and bombings by environmental and animal rights extremists suggest that compared with men, relationships are catalysts for women’s involvement in domestic terrorism; recruitment and opportunity differ by ideology and are not always effective in victimizing their intended hate group. We suggest an inter-disciplinary approach that considers criminological principles of strain theory along with sociological emphasis on gendered social networks and the strength of weak ties. The article is currently available OnlineFirst. For more information on the DWC’s 30th Anniversary, read about their Thirty Dollars for Thirty Years campaign here. Or, check out the DWC 30th Anniversary Issue: Growth & Diversity in Feminist Criminology, which will soon be available here. Posted September 2014.
Over-diagnosis, over-treatment and industry influence. Surely not in sports medicine? Ray Moynihan is an internationally renowned contributor in the battle to limit any inappropriate influence of pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and technology companies on good clinical practice. He shares his concerns about the role of drug/implant companies but also argues that clinicians may well be contributing to suboptimal care – almost subconsciously. This is relevant for conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). The issue of ‘preventive’ surgery to prevent future arthritis in currently pain-free hips is a massive issue in sports medicine of course. How do we know which patients need this treatment? Enjoy this podcast from a voice outside BJSM’s traditional network of physiotherapists, physicians, massage therapists, clinicians working with active people. When we planned the podcast, Ray Moynihan said he didn’t know about sport but I think you’ll agree that what he offers is hugely relevant to sport and exercise medicine. Thanks Ray! And the 2nd ‘Preventing Overdiagosis’ conference is at Oxford from September 15-17 – just google ‘overdiagnosis conference’. Share your thoughts to @BJSM_BMJ - is this a problem in sports medicine?
