How often have you spent time with people you love only to feel frustrated and misunderstood? As humans we are all so complex in our network of feelings and emotions. Unfortunately, we've been raised thinking that negative emotions are bad and should be shunned. Many of us are barely holding it together, or are spiraling out of control because we don't know how to handle the feelings that are leaving us totally overwhelmed. Lori Gottlieb, a psychotherapist and author joins me and breaks down why we don't have to run away from those taboo feelings of envy and jealousy. She explains how to communicate better and hold space for your partner or children and allow them to just be heard. This episode is packed with so much you may have to listen a second time. We officially hit 200 episodes! We appreciate all of you that have listened to one, all (DM us if you have) or anything in between! Last episode we talked about how optimizing insulin and blood sugar is really the hidden gem for a lot of people's hormone healing and weight loss journeys, we chatted about how to know if you are insulin resistant or on the path toward insulin resistance, and we walked through the science of how these things actually work in the body so you can UNDERSTAND WHY this impacts your weight. This week let's chat about how to actually balance blood sugar from a nutrition, movement, and lifestyle perspective! First, I want to share a story about a woman named Susie who also listens to the Vanessa G Fitcast. Susie just started her own business and is busier than ever. She sleeps 5-7 hours at best and often forgets to eat, leading to some binge eating at night and/or on the weekends. She has always carried a bit more weight than she would like so she has had a history of yo-yo diets in the past to try and lose the weight. Nowadays she eats overall healthy, but truthfully her health isn't as much of a priority as it once was, as she is at her desk most of the day and doesn't have time for much activity. She listened to Episode 199 and starts to put the puzzle pieces together of how blood sugar could be playing a role in keeping her stuck. If you resonate with Susie, I have 6 foundational blood sugar balancing strategies that you can start using today that we've seen make a tremendous difference in the lives of our clients. Let us know which ones you'll be incorporating soon! Time Stamps: (1:12) Episode 200!!! Overcome your trust issues to boost your success. Trust issues and the need for control out of fear and/or negative biased experiences from the past are one of the biggest potential and success blocks many people experience. If we don't face and work through them, they can even bring us to a state of isolation, overworking, and burning out emotionally, mentally, or even physically. We feel like we have to do everything by ourselves to get the job done. There are definitely some situations where it's a strategic move or competitive necessity to keep innovative ideas, prototypes, or collaborations private until they're settled to be released. That is not what we are talking about in this episode. Today's show is all about answering your most frequently asked questions about success-blocking behaviors around trust and how to resolve them. In this episode, you'll get a free coaching experience worth at least $5000: - Learn WHERE trust issues are holding you back from your full potential and desired outcome - Understand WHY we need to work through them, because otherwise they'll grow overbearingly huge over time - KNOW the 11 most obvious signs that you have trust issues and HOW to resolve them This episode will help you identify the issues holding you back and provide a printable worksheet/test to help you resolve them once and for all. You'll learn how to free another huge percentage of your trapped potential in success and energy. Please share this episode with as many people as you can or on your platforms to help spread our vision and move more and more people from trapped to triumphant. On this week's episode of the Like a Boss podcast, I'm sharing 10 steps to reach your first $100K in business. Becoming a 6-figure business owner in 2019 was a huge achievement for me and has led to so many amazing things in my life. It led to the purchase of our family's dream home, it allowed my business to provide for our family when my husband was out of work due to COVID, and it allowed me to hire my first full-time employee. If getting to $100K is your dream, then this is the episode for you. Let's dive in! Step #1 → Understand WHY you want to reach $100K A lot of women set big goals, but don't understand WHY they want the goal in the first place. In order to reach a big goal, you have to know why you want it. You have to be emotionally connected to it. Why is $100K important to you? What will it allow you to do? Step #2 → Identify your money fears Making more money is not necessarily a positive thing. Maybe you grew up in a home where making more money was bad. Maybe you've seen family members or friends change negatively when they started making more money. You can't make more money if you're afraid of it - so to get to $100K you have to address those fears. Step #3 → Go all in one audience and one offer I've talked about why niching down is important before. Going deep vs. wide allows you to serve your audience in a bigger way and attract clients who are excited to work with you. It also makes you known as an expert in your subject matter. If you're constantly bouncing around from audience to audience or offer to offer, people will be confused. And when they're confused, they don't buy. Step #4 → Be bolder in your messaging Lukewarm messaging does nothing for your marketing or business. In order to attract the dream clients, you have to get comfortable with saying bold things. With taking a firm stance. With not trying to be everyone's best friend. As soon as I got comfortable giving people tough love, I stopped attracting clients who weren't committed to doing the work or just expected instant results. Which meant my clients got BETTER results and stayed with me longer. Step #5 → Commit to growing your audience It's no secret that my FB group has made me a LOT of money. The reason it's made me a lot of money is because I committed to growing it. I showed up consistently every day. I offered a ton of value. Growing your audience is like an insurance policy for your business - it guarantees you'll land clients whenever you want. And that's true freedom, my friends. Step #6 → Talk about your offers If you want to reach $100K, you're going to have to get really comfortable talking about your offers. The reason most women aren't comfortable doing this is because they don't really understand the transformation they offer. They don't understand how what they do can change someone's business or life. The sooner you understand your transformation, the sooner you'll be comfortable sharing your offers. Step #7 → Manage your mind You can have the best marketing strategy in the world, but if you're not managing your mind it means nothing. Our thoughts dictate our actions - which means your thoughts better reflect the $100K goal you're working toward. Examples of thoughts that lead to $100K: there are plenty of clients for me to serve, people are lucky to work with me, making $100K gets to be easy and fun. Thoughts that WON'T get you to $100K: I have to hustle to land clients, I can't help my clients get results, I need to undercharge just to land a client, I have to work more hours to make more money, I don't want people to think I'm salesy. Step #8 → Put strict boundaries in place Comparison will not lead you to make $100K. If you want to be a 6-figure business owner, you'd better put boundaries in place around where you hang out, how you spend your time, who you follow, etc. If anyone triggers self-doubt or anxiety, unfollow them immediately. Your mind is the most important business asset you have. Step #9 → Act like the woman who's already making $100K The reason I got to $100K in my business was because I acted like the woman who made $100K. I made decisions from that perspective vs. my current reality. Often those decisions meant investing in things that felt scary. I did things before I felt “ready” because I knew that I would never feel 100% ready. Stop saying that once you reach $100K you'll invest in the coach you've been wanting or you'll hire a team member. Do it BEFORE you get there because that's how you get there faster. Step #10 → Get help I did NOT get to $100K alone. I've invested in my professional growth every single year. I've worked with a coach, attended conferences, and invested in programs that would take me to the next level. I also got support from family to help with childcare and hired out for cleaning, etc. I knew I couldn't do it alone and I didn't try. Friends, you can't DIY your way to $100K. Get help with your blind spots and focus on the stuff you're really good at. Connect with me outside the podcast! Continue the conversation in the Market Like a Boss Facebook group. Slides: The Book of James: Resolving Conflict Conflict Defined Jas. 4:1 Conflict means→ maintain war with; keep up a feud. There is Christian conflict in every chapter of the Book of James that is manifested in the form of the sin of hypocrisy. Conflict in Chapter One 1-4 To claim to serve God except when trials and troubles come. 5-11 To claim to depend on God, refuses wisdom. 12-16 To claim to depend on God while denying Him because of pleasures! 17-25 To be gifted with INSTRUCTION BOOK and neglect to follow it! 26 To claim to be Christ controlled while your tongue is out of control! 27 To claim pure Christianity without ACTION. Conflict in Chapter Two 1-13 To claim to be a Christian but does not show proper respect of persons 14-26 To claim to be a Christian but does not present a proper concept of faith. Conflict in Chapter Three 2-3 Failure to control your desire to say what you shouldn't. 8-9 To use the tongue to glorify God, and to curse man. 13-18 To claim to be wise but acts foolishly. Conflict in Chapter Four 1-3 Embracing our sinful desires rather than submitting to God. 4 Attempting to be a friend of God and a friend of the world. 11-12 Speaking evil of your brother while attempting to be a doer of the law. 13-16 To boastfully goal plan without including the Lord. 17 To know to do good and refuses to perform it. Conflict in Chapter Five 1-12 Claiming spirituality while envying riches. 13-18 Claiming spirituality with an ineffectual insincere prayer life. 19-20 Claiming spirituality but failing to restore your erring brother. Resolve Conflict Now! 1:1-4, Possess faithful dependence 1: 5-11, Maintain your declaration of dependence to God with: Perils (without & within) Pleasures of Sin Prosperity - Power People - Partiality Pain Politics 1: 17-25 Trust God's Authority, its in the Book! 1: 19-20 Be swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger. 1:21 Always be ready to learn from God's Word. 1:27; 2: 24-26 Once received, one must Act on God's Word. 2: 1-13 Honor ALL men. 3:1-9 Always glorify God in speech. 3:13-18 Always seek the peaceable wisdom that is from Above. 4:13-16 Always include God in your plans. 5:13-18 Speak to God often and practice patience. 5:19-20 Give priority to reaching out to your erring brother. The Need Go To Work! 2:24, 26 -You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. You can't live like a goat and die like a sheep! James 1:12 - Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. James 1: 27 - Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. James 4:17 - “Therefore to him who knows to do good and doesn't not to him it is sin.” An Elder's Plea 1.Before You Assume, Learn The Facts. 2.Before You Judge, Understand Why. 3.Before You Hurt Someone, Learn To Feel. 4.Before You Speak, Think. In this episode we answer questions about how to handle competition! We all have competition and how we handle it is the difference between winning and losing in our markets. We are here to help and in this episode we answer questions including:How much time should we be spending thinking about our competition? How do you handle entirely new kinds of competition, like LLMs & GPT?What do we do if our competition starts to beat us?All of these questions were submitted by listeners just like you. You can submit questions for us to answer on our website https://www.thestartuphelpdesk.com/ or on Twitter @thestartuphd - we'd love to hear from you!Reminder: this is not legal advice or investment advice.Q1: How much time should we be spending thinking about our competition? The dream is to only focus on your customers' needs. In reality, almost every founder – good and bad – probably spends too much time thinking about competition. You should spend more time understanding your competition when potential customers name your competition as other solutions they are considering. You need to know who your potential customers are considering to solve the same problem you solve. You need to know why potential customers are considering them and, if a competitor wins the business, what made the customer's decision. In these scenarios, you can accelerate your ability to learn about your customers by understanding your competition. In some cases, your “competition” may be a new trend or technical advancement, such as what we are seeing in AI. Tectonic shifts like this may make it possible to solve problems in a new way: this can either be a huge differentiator for you, a distraction, or a disruptor for your business.Q2: How do you handle entirely new kinds of competition, like LLMs & GPT?It will happen! If not today, eventually. Your playbook to handle this kind of competition should include:Assess your exposure. Will your product compete? Will your business model survive?Build a timeline for the impact. How long do you have?Talk to customers. How does this new competition impact them? Does it help solve their problem in a better way?Focus on your core niche. Identify where you can be differentiated and focus there.Consider finding markets underserved by the new trend. If this tectonic shift helps your customers and helps your key differentiation, consider integrating or, if your product is mature enough, become a platform.Adapt as quickly as possible.Q3: What do we do if our competition starts to beat us?1: Make sure you know where and how they are beating you.2: Talk to even more customers than usual. Understand WHY they are beating you. Is it your product? Price? Marketing?3: Set expectations. There are rarely short term solutions, so set expectations appropriately.4: Focus, focus, focus on whatever you need to do to win again.Remember: your startup is a calculated bet. You should be in a constant state of learning if your value proposition works and adjusting where needed. If your competition starts to beat you, it is time to evaluate your differentiation. Simplify what you do so that you focus exclusively on your differentiation, and test continuously to see if your differentiation is enough to get you back into the winner's circle.

In an episode as unusual as it is powerful, Chris sets out on a 600 mile road trip in a bright yellow 1973 Volkswagen Beetle with a man he hasn't seen in 27 years named Jerry Dorneker. Departing before sunrise from Jerry's home in Columbia, South Carolina, Chris and Jerry hope the Beetle's 60 horsepower engine can power them through the West Virginia mountains and ultimately, to the town in Ohio where they both grew up. There is a direct link between the comfort and confidence a client has in a coach and that client's progress. This means the connection you're able to create can be the best indicator of their success. I love how Brené Brown describes connection. She says, “I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” As coaches, we're in a unique position. We love, we support, we value. We listen, we provide judgement-free space, and we offer guidance -- all without expecting nor needing anything back. This gives us the core to nurture a connection in which we can offer something truly amazing to our clients. On this week’s episode of the Market Like a Boss podcast, I’m sharing 10 steps to reach your first $100K in business. Becoming a 6-figure business owner in 2019 was a huge achievement for me and has led to so many amazing things in my life. It’s led to the purchase of our family’s dream home last year, it’s allowed my business to provide for our family when my husband was out of work due to COVID, and it’s allowed me to hire my first full-time employee. If getting to $100K is your dream, then this is the episode for you. Let’s dive in! Step #1 → Understand WHY you want to reach $100K A lot of women set big goals, but don’t understand WHY they want the goal in the first place. Maybe you’ve seen family members or friends change negatively when they started making more money. You can’t make more money if you’re afraid of it - so to get to $100K you have to address those fears. Step #3 → Go all in one audience and one offer I’ve talked about why niching down is important before. Going deep vs. wide allows you to serve your audience in a bigger way and attract clients who are excited to work with you. It also makes you known as an expert in your subject matter. If you’re constantly bouncing around from audience to audience or offer to offer, people will be confused. And when they’re confused, they don’t buy. Step #4 → Be bolder in your messaging Lukewarm messaging does nothing for your marketing or business. In order to attract the dream clients, you have to get comfortable with saying bold things. With taking a firm stance. With not trying to be everyone’s best friend. As soon as I got comfortable giving people tough love, I stopped attracting clients who weren’t committed to doing the work or just expected instant results. Which meant my clients got BETTER results and stayed with me longer. Step #5 → Commit to growing your audience It’s no secret that my FB group has made me a LOT of money. The reason it’s made me a lot of money is because I committed growing it. I showed up consistently every day. I offered a ton of value. Growing your audience is like an insurance policy for your business - it guarantees you’ll land clients whenever you want. And that’s true freedom, my friends. Step #6 → Talk about your offers If you want to reach $100K, you’re going to have to get really comfortable talking about your offers. The reason most women aren’t comfortable doing this is because they don’t really understand the transformation they offer. They don’t understand how what they do can change someone’s business or life. The sooner you understand your transformation, the sooner you’ll be comfortable sharing your offers. Step #7 → Manage your mind You can have the best marketing strategy in the world, but if you’re not managing your mind it means nothing. Our thoughts dictate our actions - which means your thoughts better reflect the $100K goal you’re working toward. Examples of thoughts that lead to $100K: there are plenty of clients for me to serve, people are lucky to work with me, making $100K gets to be easy and fun. Thoughts that WON’T get you to $100K: I have to hustle to land clients, I can’t help my clients get results, I need to undercharge just to land a client, I have to work more hours to make more money, I don’t want people to think I’m salesy. Step #8 → Put strict boundaries in place Comparison will not lead you to make $100K. If you want to be a 6-figure business owner, you’d better put boundaries in place around where you hang out, how you spend your time, who you follow, etc. If anyone triggers self-doubt or anxiety, unfollow them immediately. Your mind is the most important business asset you have. Step #9 → Act like the woman who’s already making $100K The reason I got to $100K in my business was because I acted like the woman who made $100K. I made decisions from that perspective vs. my current reality. Often those decisions meant investing in things that felt scary. I did things before I felt “ready” because I knew that I would never feel 100% ready. Stop saying that once you reach $100K you’ll invest in the coach you’ve been wanting or you’ll hire a team member. Do it BEFORE you get there because that’s how you get there faster. Step #10 → Get help I did NOT get to $100K alone. I’ve invested in my professional growth every single year. I’ve worked with a coach, attended conferences, and invested in programs that would take me to the next level. I also got support from family to help with childcare and hired out for cleaning, etc. I knew I couldn’t do it alone and I didn’t try. Friends, you can’t DIY your way to $100K. Get help with your blind spots and focus on the stuff you’re really good at. Connect with Market Like a Boss! Continue the conversation in Michelle’s Facebook Group. How can the thing that causes you so much pain, also be the same thing you can't imagine living without?Breaking promises to yourself on the daily? Your not happy with the relationship you have with alcohol, but you are always giving in to your desires and can't imagine life without it? End the drama by making a choice to UNDERSTAND WHY this is happening. This is a 100% normal, you or your brain are not broken. It is simply that you haven't practiced how to process emotions. Every time you have had a specific emotion in the past, subconsciously, you have responded with a drink. You may not consciously KNOW, this is how you are solving for an emotion, and it doesn't even have to be a negative one.The act of drinking isn't the problem. It is getting comfortable with first being with an emotion and proving to yourself that a drink doesn't change your circumstances, it just masks the emotion. As a reflection for self inquiry this week:What would your life look like without alcohol? What benefits to you gain from alcohol that you aren't capable of creating your own? When you have the urge to drink, or it's time to decide: Ask yourself: What emotion am I experiencing right now? What are the sensations in my body that it is producing? To change anything in your life: You have to start making decisions you feel good about, that is the only thing that makes it "the right time".Schedule your complimentary alignment session HERE

“Understand WHY you’re doing WHAT you’re doing”. Consciously directing our choices applies in most areas of our lives, and today I talk with filmmaker, professor, and author JACQUELINE FROST about this concept in terms of making aesthetic choices in cinematography and directing. But her interviews with legendary ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) members and top directors and producers inform her wider perspective in ways that I think everyone can relate to. Life is always a rollercoaster! Lately, I’ve been overwhelmed by all the key activities that are in my life. It doesn’t help that I have a heightened sense of urgency. I like to get things done. It’s my favorite mode. Come up with a strategy, a plan to execute and just go! But, how do we deal with the overwhelm? First, let’s define what Overwhelm is. I like to define it as ‘treading water’. You’re doing everything just to keep afloat. We’ve all experienced this feeling. It's just hard to see the forest from the trees. It’s just hard to see the plan/ where you’re going, the ultimate goal. The truth is the chaos that you’re feeling, is coming from inside. Yup, we have lots of things going on in our heads. We need to find a way to take a breath, prioritize and break them into smaller chunks of activities. It does sound way too easy. But I’m here to take the complexity out of it. Here are a few strategies: ELEPHANT: First, we need to acknowledge the elephant in the room. Acknowledge that you are overwhelmed. That’s always the first step. UNDERSTAND: Why do you feel overwhelmed? Too much to do? Too much to focus on immediately? Too many backs to back appointments/meetings? Not being able to say No? BREATHE: Take a big breathe and recognize that everything is fixable and solvable. We just need to figure out our options. BRAIN DUMP: Write down everything on a list. Just get it all down on paper. Just keep listing things. Whatever is on your mind, just get it out of your head and onto paper. One centralizes list. NOW: What are the biggest priorities? What are the immediate items that you need to right now? Not just now, but NOW NOW. When I was working in South Africa, they had three (3) definitions for Now. There was just now, which meant within the immediate future. Then, there was Now, which meant within the hour or so. Then, there was NOW NOW, which meant, drop everything and focus on it now. So, what do you need to do NOW NOW. ACTION: Are there items that you could outsource/automate/not do/eliminate/delegate? I’m a fan of the not-to-do list. My sister is great at this, she looks at her calendar for the week/month and highlights the days that she will need help with the kids. She gets proactive so that she can plan. The other day, I was struggling for time to do the grocery shopping/making a deadline and doing pickups. So, I got food delivered and decided to grocery shop online for delivery. Boom! #NailedIt! Next…. POWER OF NO: There is a way to say no and it really provides you a way to take control. We often feel guilty for saying NO, but we shouldn’t. We are not saying NO forever, but saying NO for the immediate future. I wrote a blog about HOW TO SAY NO ELEGANTLY. It is often hard to say No, but people will thank you for being honest and managing expectations. We need to recognize that being ‘Superman’ or ‘Superwoman’ is not about taking on so much. It’s about leveraging the people & resources around you to drive towards a goal/a vision. Here are a few resources: BLOG: HOW TO SAY NO ELEGANTLY PODCAST EPISODE: I did a podcast episode (E110) with Mr.Productivity himself - E 110: Overcome roadblocks by becoming more productive every day with Mr. Productivity, Mark Stuczewski ARTICLES: Overwhelmed? These 6 strategies may help Thank you again for your time and I really hope these tips help you. It has definitely helped me more times than I can count! Feel free to share with your friends or others that are struggling. We all need help and friendly reminders, that we are not alone in feeling this way. Best Always,Sapna

Counting calories. Balancing macros. High fat/Low carb. Low fat/High carb. Going Paleo. Or Vegan. Or Vegetarian. Or Keto. Or Whole 30. Seriously. Shoot me in the face. In today’s hyperconnected world of endless information, you’d think it would be easy to figure out how to eat healthy… but it’s become harder than ever. It’s nearly impossible to decipher the latest science that tells us one day that butter and bacon are miracle superfoods and the next day we’re told that eating any kind of fat will kill us all. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of the B.S. What if there were an easier, less stressful, and practically guilt-free way of eating that didn’t involve counting…well…anything? Can’t someone just tell me how to eat without doing math or measuring or feeling like every decision I make is the wrong one? My guest Melissa (Missy) Costello is a transformational eating coach, author, and holistic nutritionist who has completely changed my relationship to food. While I may have a reputation as someone who always makes healthy choices, the reality is anything but. I was raised on the 80’s standard American diet (SAD) of Fruit Loops for breakfast, Chef Boyardee for lunch, and Fruity Pebbles for dinner (I wish that was an exaggeration). And while I’ve reduced or eliminated many of my bad habits, what I’ve realized over the last few years is that the hardest habits to break have nothing to do with sugar or carbs or cravings…they have to do with my emotions. In this episode learn from Missy how you can change your relationship to food forever. While the journey isn’t necessarily easy, it’s a lot simpler than you might think. Diva Tech Talk interviewed the dynamic Michelle Greene, Vice President of Information Technology at Masco Corporation, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of home improvement and construction products. An $8.5 billion conglomerate, comprising more than 20 companies, Masco operates nearly 60 manufacturing facilities in the United States and over 20 in other parts of the world. Michelle was raised in Valdosta, Georgia. “My mother believed that, due to my close relationship with my aunt, I might be a school teacher.” But “what I recognized quickly was my ability to lead” so she obtained her business bachelor’s degree at Valdosta State University, and a masters’ degree in higher education and information sciences from Florida State University. She entered the workforce as a business analyst at Mellon Bank, in Pittsburgh, Pa. After two years, she migrated to Raleigh, North Carolina for another analyst position at Sony Ericsson a global leader in mobile communications. Michelle progressed from business analyst to project manager, and then a Sony Ericsson global program manager position. “I went to Sweden on a short-term assignment,” Michelle said. That assignment doubled in duration, helping Michelle recognize “my own ability to make it work, wherever I am. If the opportunity and the job is good, I will figure the rest out!” She shepherded the formerly outsourced data center back inside the corporation. Then Michelle moved to a service management job back in the states, then the global management of Sony’s network services, and to her final Sony Ericsson job, Director of Business Infrastructure worldwide. In that role, Michelle directed an annual budget of $70 million; managed all global infrastructure resources on three continents; and led global outsourcing, partners and suppliers for information technology. “My reputation preceded me. I was someone who could get things done. I was a bit of a ‘turnaround’ person.” Within a year of her return to the states, “The CIO for Sony-Ericsson (Colin Boyd) who previously moved to Johnson Controls” was instrumental in recruiting her to that larger company. Michelle stayed with Johnson Controls for nine years, first working in their Buildings Division in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; then heading up the Automotive Electronics and Interiors Division in Holland, Michigan. Then she moved back to headquarters as Vice President of Business Partnership, for the entire enterprise. Michelle credited her mentors for inspiring and empowering her. “I have had some very good coaches, along the way.” When Masco reached out to recruit her, “I had people I could go to” who provided advice. Following mentors’ advice, in 2018, Michelle joined Masco, in her current role. “I’ve made it my practice, when I take over a new team, to do one-on-ones with every member, so I can understand. I can meet you, where you are.” She emphasized that her mission is to offer “authentic and strong leadership” in her current role, and all future roles. “I feel like we don’t have enough leaders in IT. I have the ability to effect change because of my leadership style.” Michelle noted that her personal strengths include authenticity, being a life-long student of leadership best practices, and wielding “influence without authority” in order to “get things done.” Michelle’s primary rule is “take chances.” She is a strong believer in clear communication. “I am finding, day-today, our biggest source of issues is you did not have a conversation with someone, or you did not take the time to be effective in the way you were getting across your message.” Her future plans include extending the information technology organization throughout the larger global organization, not just at headquarters. “We don’t always leverage and maximize our spending, our licensing, our approach, our solutions.” Along the way, when she experienced gender or race bias, Michelle candidly said: “I recognized, I cannot wear it on my sleeve. That’s their problem; not mine.” Her key pieces of advice when contending with prejudices are: “Don’t take it personally. And don’t give away your power. Don’t let it define you.” Michelle recommended a book by Carla Harris called EXPECT TO WIN, which outlines ten proven strategies for thriving at work. Michelle also enthused about Marshall Goldsmith’s WHAT GOT YOU HERE WON’T GET YOU THERE, which exhorts leaders to examine the small “transactional flaws” that can keep high-performing individuals from reaching the next pinnacle . “We do need to make adjustments” along the way, according to Michelle. Key success tips Michelle offers to girls and women are: “Understand WHY you are doing something. Know yourself. Be true to yourself.” Don’t give in to limits nor allow barriers to success. Find the balance between “sharing too much” personal information and being authentic and personable. Cultivate empathy. And the earlier you get a mentor, the better it will be for your career development. In her volunteer life, Michelle sits on the board of the Milwaukee, Wisconsin Goodwill and PEARLS for TEEN GIRLS, a unique leadership development program serving middle schoolers and high school girls. She also just joined the board of Michigan’s DPTV, viewer-supported public television in Southeast Michigan. The elements of Michelle’s joy include: “great career and great wine!” She also stressed that “failure, for me, is not an option. I keep it in the back of my mind, to keep me grounded. But I am not allowing it to be an option.” Make sure to check us out on online at www.divatechtalk.com, on Twitter @divatechtalks, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/divatechtalk. Do you struggle getting to work? Are you afraid to show your work to others? Do you believe your work is not good enough? This is creative anxiety. Also known as self-doubt. Or your inner critic. Today, I want to walk through some steps to help you quiet your inner critic so you can continue flexing your creative muscle in peace. I am also going to introduce you to CBD, a supplement I take to calm my anxiety and available at www.mypaincenter.com Your creative anxiety may be masked. You may be mistaking it for not having time, or being a parent, nor not feeling ready. Creative anxiety can stop a project before it can even begin. Anxiety is self-protection. Creative anxiety can hinder us. That voice in the back of your head telling you you’re not good enough. We start to question our passion and our work. We also start to overthink our art and what will people like. This is more detrimental, when you start to produce art you think people will like versus art you are passionate about. This is harder and harder to move away from with Social Media. We want to create content for likes and not for ourselves. But You are not alone. Almost all creatives have struggled with this, many still do. Today I want to walk through some steps to help you quiet your inner critic so you can continue flexing your creative muscle in peace. Identify what you are feeling and why What is that you are feeling? What is causing this sense of anxiety? Is it that you’re afraid of failing? That your work will suck? That people will laugh at you? Make a list of everything standing in your way that’s making you avoid focusing on your creative passion. For example, my list is – My jokes aren’t funny, no one will laugh, people will think I suck, I won’t book more dates, If I don’t book more dates I’ll never survive as a comedian Once I get these thoughts out of my head and on to paper, I can see how silly some of these are. I mean let’s start with #1. If my jokes are funny then there are no other items on my list! So instead of moping around feeling anxious I should just focus on writing really funny jokes. Understand WHY you’re pursuing your creative passion Why did you start along this path? Did someone tell you to? Probably not. No guidance counselor I know sits you down and says you should go be a musician, or a comedian, or a dancer. No, they tell you to go be doctors and lawyers. You most likely chose to pursue this creative passion. And that is a big step! You’re trying something completely new, something risky. Of course, you are anxious! And on top of that, you have to share this passion with others. Super scary. But at the end of the day remember, you started this because you want to not, not because someone said you should. Why did you want to make art when you first started? Does it move you? Give your life meaning? Feed your soul? Enrich your life? Remind yourself when you feel anxious why you started, what got you to this point. Lower your expectations of yourself I am being a hypocrite here, but yes, stop being so hard on yourself. I fall into this trap. We all have these visions about our art and where it will take us, and sometimes that that doesn’t align with reality. Or we put out content and it doesn’t do as well as we imagined. We have to be okay with that. We have to give ourselves props that we even took the first step of making the art and then releasing it, which is more than others are doing. With time, and practice, we will get closer and closer to our vision of success. Our society puts a lot of pressure on us not to make mistakes. We as a society are impatient and want instant gratification. But we need to be self-accepting and understand that it’s ok to make mistakes. It’s OK to stumble. If you recognize your fears as listed in step 1, confront them, and keep moving forward. This is where real progress will take place. And if you’re inner critic tells you are not good enough to continue, tell him or her to shut up. Because how are you going to get good if you don’t keep putting in the time and effort. Your inner critic is holding you down when you should be rising. So tell your brain to hush and keep pushing. Calm yourself down if you need to For many, they can only write with a glass of wine or with candles. Others need to take a long shower to clear their mind. While others go for a walk. Find what works for you and implement it into your creative process. For me, I spend a full-day in the office. By the time I come home from work I’m stressed out and overwhelmed. The last thing I want to think about is being creative. I also struggle with anxiety and have a hard time leaving it at work. So I actually utilize CBD in my daily routine. CBD is a safe, non-psychoactive substance that relaxes and calms the body. It is the cousin of THC, that stuff in weed, except CBD is legal and doesn’t make you stoned. Instead it helps me calm down, breathe, and restart my evening on a positive note. I am a big fan of the gummies – for some reason I crave sugar after work and mixed with CBD, it does the trick. If you are interested in learning more check out my new website where I provide you everything you need to know about CBD and more – www.mypaincenter.com And lastly 6. Join communities of like-minded people Facebook is a great place to start. Join communities of creatives in your field or your city. Reading their posts keep me motivated and many times teach me something new. You may also find new resources or books to check out, upcoming events to showcase your creativity, and or new friends. Or listen to podcasts that could inspire you. Like this one. Or read – pick up a book by your favorite author or even a book on creativity. All these ideas can help you discover something new that may inspire you to create something that’s been blocked up. In the end remember when you finally put out your masterpiece, whether it’s a novel or a new song. You will have made mistakes along the way. You will have tripped and slipped. You will have started over a hundred times. But now you have something amazing to share with the world. You. Because you told you’re your inner critic to hush. It’s all possible, you just need to get started. [av_social_share title='Share this entry' style='' buttons='' custom_class='' admin_preview_bg=''] Episode Summary Your online fundraising strategy can always improve and become more innovative. Gaining new knowledge and keeping up with an evolving industry places your organization on the path to growth and this ultimately allows you to accomplish bigger and greater goals. You can do these by employing some of these strategies to help you attract new donors, increase engagement, and make better use of technology. Fundraising starts in-house. Your staff is going to be the start of the fundraising movement. They are going to begin the search for lucrative prospects and may even turn them into donors. Why not reward your staff for successfully bringing in these donors? An incentive program not only motivates your staff but it also ensures that they are going to be working with high standards to earn these incentives. This strategy is commonly used among organizations whether they are for-profit or non-profit. Before you begin this process though, you should decide if the organization has the ambition. You need to have have a strong mission that’s enough to motivate your employees to want to make change. You need to determine if yearly incentives for every employee is enough to motivate them to perform their tasks properly and with dedication. You also need to determine if your investment in the employee incentive program would lead to a reasonable return of investment and if this incentive program is enough to attract and retain talent in the future. These are all factors that you should be discussing with your board of directors. You can also think about surveying your employees to get their thoughts and opinions on the matter. Understand WHY donors give Use a donor management system to track activity and preferences for your donors. Not only to track the amount of money each donor contributes, but to also track steps in outreach, participation, and relationship building. You may wish to segment donors who have similar reasons for giving. Then, you can provide means for your donors to further build on and fulfill these reasons. Giving is a personal decision. Consider how you’ll recognize each person. This can be based on the amount of the contribution, how many times a year they contribute, or just an overall thank you to everyone who donates. Afterall, feedback is one form of motivation in itself. Incentives can be developed for moving up through contribution levels. This can be exclusive events, gifting suites, or even a huge raffle. Go Mobile! In the modern scenario, almost every adult has a smartphone. You have to take this into consideration as people tend to use their mobile devices over their computers. In accordance with this principle, you have to analyze how much of your web traffic is coming from mobile devices. This is going to tell you if going mobile is a great choice for your nonprofit (though having the option is always nice). From here, you can discover how many people are utilizing the donation form from a mobile device. Watch the trends change in your analytics and see how it worked and how it can be improved. Simplify Giving Capabilities on Your Website When people want to donate, they want it to be simple and easy (same goes for people who don’t yet know they want to donate). Add the donation button to the top of your website. Include video footage sharing what you do and why a person should contribute. Keep your forms manageable and not overwhelming. The flow of your form should be logical and is should sense. Make your call-to-action as clear as can be. This will make receiving donations easy and simple. Use Your Resources Wisely Not utilizing technology for your business is like not putting gas in your vehicle. Without using technology and resources wisely, marketing campaigns and community engagement projects would be quite challenging. Furthermore, collecting data from your community members regarding what they like and don’t like would be a hassle. Customer service depends on your effective use of technology. By making good use of your resources, you’ll be able to answer questions from your community members right away. All of this has led to a new generation where technology matters. Technology is the epicenter of the business world along with the way that we are able to increase the amount of customer satisfaction, reach, and overall happiness through its effective use. Nonprofits are able to improve the ways in which they share a message significantly. The tone, voice, and emotion tied to their message can be conveyed in such an honest and captivating manner. People are able to actually see the reason why a nonprofit is fighting for certain people and doing anything they can to spread the word and show people the magnitude in which others are struggling. In this regard, we can refer to a chapter in our book, “Brick by Brick”, where we state that developing your brand is one of the first important steps to take when fundraising. This principle is further emphasized in the book as we try to analyze how Abraham Lincoln was able to gather as much support as he did when he sought to eliminate slavery. The ability to influence the greatest good for the greatest number has increased through technology. Because of this, nonprofits are now able to take advantage of available resources to affect substantial change in the world. In this podcast, Marjorie Moore of 501Crossroads talks about how she got started with nonprofits and how she has seen fundraising change over time. She tells us about some of her favorite ways to create engagement within a community, the roadblocks she has faced, and her predictions for how nonprofits will adapt to changes in technology over the next 5 years. May the tips in this podcast give you insight on the ways that you can use fundraising to attract new donors and some creative thought for you and your organization. We would love to hear what you are currently doing and if any of this information was helpful to you. About Marjorie Moore Marjorie Moore co-founded the 501 Crossroads Podcast. She has a background in radio and television broadcasting and loves to grow agencies into first class organizations that can share their vision and build consensus amongst the board, staff, volunteers, donors, clients and other constituents.
