The Mid•Point with Gabby Logan

In this episode of Midpoint, Gabby sits down fellow broadcaster Sophie Raworth. Sophie is one of Britain's most recognisable faces on the BBC news for over thirty years, and someone who has covered some of the most significant moments in modern history and interviewed some of the most important figures of our time. But this conversation tis around a different subject. Away from the newsroom, Sophie has built another passion entirely. At 40, having done almost no exercise for decades, she decided to run the London Marathon. She collapsed two miles from the finish. She got up and did it again. She has now completed all seven World Marathon Majors, more than twenty marathons and ten ultra-marathons, including the 150-mile Marathon des Sables across the Sahara. Her first book, Running on Air, published by Bloomsbury, tells the story of how running changed her — not just physically but in the ways that actually matter. This is a conversation about resilience, getting things wrong and what it takes to keep going and how MidPoint is often, the perfect time to try something new. Hosted on Acast. Introduction What happens to your health coverage the day you leave a job, go independent, or pick up seasonal work? For more than 90 million Americans who earn outside a traditional employer plan, the answer is usually that it disappears. Felix Ortiz, founder and CEO of Smirk Health, joined host Joshua Hollander to explain why the benefits system built in 1929 for full-time employees no longer fits the way people work, and what it takes to build something that does. The conversation covers portable coverage that moves with the worker, modular plans that start at $19, and an AI layer that does more than answer questions. Guest Bio Felix Ortiz is the founder and CEO of Smirk Health, an AI health benefits infrastructure company in Austin building portable coverage for 1099, part-time, hourly, and seasonal workers, underwritten and insured by Chubb. He is a repeat founder whose earlier companies spanned education technology, talent intelligence, and a banking-and-insurance platform for Americans of modest means. He is also a U.S. Army veteran and a marathoner who has finished five of the seven World Marathon Majors. Much of Smirk traces back to watching insurers decide his younger brother's care during a childhood heart condition, and to his own coverage gap leaving the military. Key Topics The 1929 problem - Group benefits were designed for full-time employees, so the fastest-growing part of the workforce gets priced out or left ineligible. Coverage that follows the worker - When a member changes employers, the plan, the price, and the benefits stay the same instead of ending with the job. Modular plans from $19 - Smirk rebuilt the plan chassis so members can add or remove coverage and see what is covered and what it costs before they buy. From supplemental to fully insured - Smirk took a product category damaged by bad actors, re-engineered it into a fully insured medical plan, and stacked it on an AI layer. An AI layer, not a chatbot - Because the plan is tied into Smirk's infrastructure, the concierge can take a member from a question all the way to a booked appointment with known costs. The AI divide - Ortiz argues a gap is opening between people on free AI models and people on paid ones, and that health is the wrong place to let that gap decide outcomes. Getting a carrier to say yes - How Smirk earned Chubb as an underwriting partner, and what Ortiz tells founders about approaching a large carrier. Notable Quotes "Somebody will have a Toyota, somebody else will have a Mercedes-Benz, but ultimately they still have access to a car. And when it comes to health, they don't. That's the big pain point." "We've gutted the whole thing and re-engineered it to be a fully insured medical plan." "You actually are starting to get a divide in AI infrastructure. That's a topic no one talks about." "Three years out, Smirk will be the infrastructure stack for AI within the health and financial intersection." What if the corporate expectation to "leave your personal life at the door" is actually the root cause of your burnout? In this episode of Pursue Your Passion, host Tyler Kamerman sits down with workplace mental health pioneer, elite coach, and near-six-star World Marathon Major runner, Zach Schmit. Zach shares his radical upstream approach to wellness through Covenant Workplace Solutions, shattering the corporate myth of emotional segregation. The big aha moment? If you want high-performing execution in your career, you have to nurture the whole person - integrating physical fitness, proactive mental healthcare, nutrition, and a solid foundation at home. But the transformation doesn't stop in the office. Zach opens up about his grueling entrepreneurial shift in 2020, navigating his mother's cancer battle, and the heart-wrenching moment he missed qualifying for the Boston Marathon by a mere 58 seconds. This episode serves as a powerful wake-up call regarding the difference between fleeting, emotional motivation and rock-solid, faith-fueled discipline. Listeners will walk away inspired by the Japanese concept of Kaizen, continuous daily improvement, and deeply convinced that choosing intentional, hard challenges today is precisely how God prepares us for the unchosen hardships of tomorrow. Key Takeaways Shift from Reactive to Proactive: True well-being isn't a band-aid applied after a mental health crisis. Real workplace and personal culture are built upstream by investing in daily nutrition, movement, and emotional health. The Mind-Body Blueprint: Our physical and mental health are profoundly intertwined. Data shows that roughly 1 in 3 individuals suffering from long-term physical ailments eventually battle anxiety or depression. You cannot fix one while ignoring the other! Chosen Hardships Prepare You for the Unchosen: Intentionally leaning into difficult disciplines (like marathon training or starting a business) calluses your mind, refines your spirit, and builds the armor you need when life throws unexpected trials your way. Live in the Discipline Zone: Motivation gets you to the starting line on January 1st, but discipline is what keeps you running when the emotional high fades.  To connect with Zach: LinkedIn @ZachSchmit or Instagram @Zach_Schmit To get in touch with Tyler: https://www.tylerkamerman.com/

We kick off the episode by celebrating National Outdoor Equipment Maintenance Day before diving into our recent weekends. Erin recaps her trip to the local Kempton Fair, complete with tractor pulls, upcoming frog jumping contests, and a ride operator broadcasting on TikTok Live. Erin then details her chaotic but ultimately amazing trip to Cellar Beast Winehouse in Andreas, Pennsylvania, where she tackled wine-tasting etiquette, judged an entitled millionaire, and discovered a phenomenal $65 bottle of wine. We also share a quick pull-up progress update, announcing Erin's new ability to hang unassisted and move around the bar, a skill she absolutely plans to show off when we attend the USATF Outdoor Championships. Finally, we give a quick merch update on our premium, sturdy NonMembers Only koozies and the Team Struggle Run shirts that Dan is actively packing and shipping. In tech news, we review Snapchat's new augmented reality Spectacles, which look so clunky they seem like a joke and apparently caused the company's stock to plummet. Moving into the running world, we review the viral antics of "The 5K Guy" running inside a fridge and an oven, another creator completing a marathon without touching the ground using lawn chairs, and Matt Planks holding an agonizing two-hour and 28-minute plank for the Aerial Recovery Group. We also touch on the Cape Town Marathon joining the World Marathon Majors, the London Marathon expanding to a massive two-day event, and our fears about private equity firm L Catterton purchasing the indoor fitness race Hyrox. We even highlight a crazy story out of the Netherlands where a marathon was postponed because organizers accidentally hired a serial fake ambulance worker. Oh, and we definitely need to secure press passes to the Estonian Bus Driver Championships. For our FIFA segment, we discuss the two lucky fans getting paid $50,000 to watch all 104 World Cup matches inside a glass cube in Times Square. We also applaud the clever marketing tactics of brands like Levi's and Gillette, who creatively covered up their stadium logos with white outlines and foam shaving cream to comply with strict FIFA rules. After sharing how heartwarming it is to see Americans welcoming international soccer fans with open arms—from the Algerian national team in Kansas to Scottish fans in Boston—we wrap up with our "No Bad, No Sad" segment. This week, we highlight an NYPD officer who brought joy to the chaotic Knicks parade by playing a massive game of tic-tac-toe with fans across the street barricades, and we send a special shoutout to Knox crushing it on the kazoo.

This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we are catching up on a very busy June with a stack of race reviews, a heat warning, and one massive personal announcement. We start with the big news: Kyle is officially heading to the 2027 London Marathon, which will complete his original World Marathon Majors journey after Chicago, New York, Boston, Berlin, Tokyo, Sydney, and finally London. From there, we dive into the June race review backlog, beginning with the Heroes 4 Hospice 5K in Overland Park, a meaningful race supporting hospice care and one of the few local 5Ks still skipping finisher medals in favor of keeping the focus on the cause. The next day brought the I Wanna Rock 5K, run on nearly the same course but in the opposite direction after a massive pre-race thunderstorm turned the morning into a soggy, humid rock-and-roll sweat fest. We also revisit the cancelled Clinton Historic Half Marathon, where severe storms and flooding wiped out the final running of the half marathon distance and threw Kyle's race-count math into chaos. Then we head to Tulsa for the Treat Trot 15K, a last-minute race added during a podcast planning getaway that featured three repetitive out-and-backs, summer heat, a second-place age-group finish, and a glorious post-race Bomb Pop. Finally, we review the Sunglasses Run 10K at Longview Lake, where excessive heat, limited shade, and thick humidity made the new 10K option a true summer sufferfest, even if the medal turned out to be one of the best sunglasses-themed medals yet. This episode is a full June running junk drawer: local races, travel miles, cancelled plans, hot-weather lessons, big goals, and the next step toward London.

Same mission of surfacing the untold stories behind NYC's running culture, with a fresh approach to how we tell them. More soon.First...Meet Patryk.------"I was at the gym one day, doing the typical dude thing — asking my neighbor Kenny what he was working on. Chest? Back? Arms? He just looked at me, straight-faced, and said: 'Five or six miles on the treadmill.' I swear, I had never heard someone say something like that in my life. And Kenny's not some lean guy — he's a husky dude. So I'm standing there like, what is he talking about? Then he tells me he's training for the New York City Marathon. That's all I needed. I thought, if Kenny can do it, I can do it."Patryk Odedina is a Bronx-based runner who picked up the sport at 29 after a gym conversation with his neighbor Kenny, and has since completed all six World Marathon Majors while chipping nearly 90 minutes off his debut time. Background:– Born in Poland, raised in the Bronx from age 3. Polish mother, Nigerian father.– Played basketball at Lincoln High School (the one in Yonkers) and Lehman College. No running background.– Spent six-plus years in tech salesThe origin story: Late 2018, lifting weights in a Harlem gym, his neighbor Kenny mentioned he was training for the NYC Marathon. Patryk had never heard anyone say something like that out loud. He signed up for the 2020 race through Team for Kids before knowing what a 5K was.Marathon résumé:– 2020 NYC (virtual): 4:40. She's spent her whole life refusing to be just one thing. We talked about why she believes your fears are really just cares, and how she traced all of hers back to one core fear before solving it with a single phone call to three friends. Picturing fear as a passenger in the car you're driving instead of something to outrun. Guiding Lisa through five Boston Marathons, learning to talk through tension in the tether so the conversation could be about feelings instead of left and right, and the time they fell clipped into a tandem bike in traffic while training for their first triathlon. Why she thinks shortcuts are poison, and how you can stand next to someone on a start line and feel whether they earned it. Welcome to “The Future of Running” podcast on Head Start presented by Brooksee and hosted by Phil Dumontet. In this episode, Phil sits down with Clark Gardner, CEO of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, for a conversation about leadership, resilience, and the ambition to bring the Abbott World Marathon Majors to Africa for the very first time. With Eliud Kipchoge preparing to race his first marathon on African soil and the eyes of the running world fixed on Cape Town, the stakes for this moment could not be higher. What does it take to build a World Marathon Major from the ground up? How do you lead when 24,000 runners are ready to race and extreme weather forces a cancellation just 90 minutes before the gun? Clark shares the leadership principles and crisis frameworks that helped his team navigate one of the toughest moments in the race's history, and why he believes leaders should stay in the background during success and step forward during failure. We also explore the bigger picture: why Africa — home to the vast majority of the world's elite marathon talent — has never had a Major until now, what Cape Town becoming the eighth major would mean for the sport globally, and how endurance events can drive tourism, economic impact, and national identity. A compelling conversation about ambition, pressure, and why the future of marathon running may run straight through Africa.Send us Fan Mail

Sebastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha both going sub-2 at the 2026 London Marathon. John Korir breaking the Boston course record. Performances that would have seemed impossible a decade ago are suddenly the new normal — and they're reshaping how everyone below the elite tier trains, too.In this episode, host Aditi Pandya sits down with Satish and Vijay to ask the question those races force: have the rules of marathon training actually changed? Together they unpack how the sport has moved from a “survival strategy” to an “attacking strategy” — and how amateur athletes are now living, training, and thinking like elites. What's covered in this episode:The super shoe era: how carbon-plated shoes have shaved minutes off world records, and how they've changed the way runners recover — minimising the injury patterns seen with early models.Democratisation of information: the internet, AI tools, and local role models behind the surge of amateur sub-3 marathoners.High mileage & the Norwegian method: the shift toward higher weekly volumes (often 100km+ for serious amateurs) and the rise of double-threshold training for race-day strength.Recovery as a priority: why sleep and simple nutrition are still king, and where saunas, Normatec boots, and magnesium fit in.The 100g+ carb revolution: training the gut to handle 100–115g of carbs per hour via gels and drink mixes, and pre-loading 48–72 hours before a race.Cutting-edge supplements: what serious runners are actually testing — sodium bicarbonate, beta-alanine, creatine, and a Swedish broccoli-based supplement called Nomio.Rapid-fire training advice: why consistency beats “magic workouts”, why the 32km marathon-pace block is overrated, and why post-run strides and hill sprints remain underrated.Host: Aditi PandyaAditi is a seasoned endurance runner and the host of The World of Running podcast. This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we finally get back to race reviews after several weeks of tackling some of the running world's heavier topics. Kyle recaps the always-popular CCVI Trolley Run in Kansas City, a fast and fun four-mile race supporting children with visual impairments, complete with beautiful spring weather, packed streets, and one pacing mistake that somehow still ended in a PR. The episode also revisits the “Too Slow for Boston” Marathon situation and what the future may hold as the chase toward completing the World Marathon Majors continues. Then it's off to Topeka for the newly revived Top City Half Marathon, now under new management, where Kyle breaks down the course changes, race atmosphere, and a few things that caught runners by surprise along the way. Along the way, there's discussion about race-day strategy, rebuilding fitness after time off, the mental side of pacing, and why one particular race medal sparked a surprisingly passionate rant. It's a lighter, funnier return to classic Back of the Pack storytelling with plenty of Midwest running chaos mixed in. Plus, with Sydney Marathon training officially about to begin, the next big chapter of the journey is almost here.

Years later, he's not only running again, he's finished the original six World Marathon Majors and just took 20 minutes off his marathon PR in Tokyo. From Paris to Boston and beyond, Lionel's story isn't about being the fastest, it's about refusing to let one diagnosis or one hard year define what's possible. We talk about the real mechanics of a comeback: physiotherapy, respecting your body in everyday movements, and rebuilding confidence one small step at a time. Lionel shares how he went from park runs to a 10K, then a half marathon, then his first Paris Marathon and why each race feels like its own emotional “cathedral.” We also get into the mental side of endurance, including the pressure of Strava metrics, the unpredictability of race day, and the moment he pivots away from chasing numbers toward gratitude and meaning. If you love practical running conversations, you'll enjoy the details too: vegan fueling while traveling, A-B testing gels, hydration habits, gear choices down to socks and seams, and the packing ritual that calms the mind before the gun goes off. Lionel also shares what might be the wildest week ever, defending his PhD viva in Paris and immediately flying to Boston to run again. If this story gives you a spark, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave a five-star review. That's why this conversation with Bishoy Tadros hits so deep for anyone thinking about fatherhood, resilience, and what it really means to lead at home.  Bishoy is the author of two acclaimed books—Break Barriers: How Setbacks Can Dare You Rather Than Define You and Audacious: Uncaging Your Authentic Self—and the creator and host of the Mile 40 Podcast. Mile 40 has quickly become a standout in the health, wellness, and personal growth space, known for its compelling interviews with athletes, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders who have turned adversity into opportunity.  He is also a very talented Sr. Account Executive for SalesForce. We talk about his family's immigrant journey from Egypt to the United States for treatment, and the three values his parents modeled through action: patience, perspective, and purpose. Bishoy explains how his dad, a Coptic Orthodox priest, served a community with calm consistency without forcing religion on anyone, and how that example shaped how he shows up as a husband and a dad. We also get honest about a modern parenting challenge: how do you teach empathy, selflessness, and healthy struggle when your kids grow up with more comfort than you did? Then the story pivots to the moment that gave Beshoy's own podcast its name. After reaching Wall Street and realizing achievement didn't equal fulfillment, he chased a long-buried athletic identity and trained for an Ironman 70.3. At mile 40, dehydrated and ready to quit, he used one simple tool to finish: celebrate small wins, one mile at a time. That mindset helped him run marathons, raise serious money for charity, and become the first Egyptian to complete all seven World Marathon Majors. If you care about parenting, mindset, endurance, and values-based leadership, you'll want to hear this one. Nicole Gray joins us fresh off Tokyo Marathon to unpack how she went from a struggling first full marathon to earning her Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star medal and lining up for Boston again. We get specific about what actually moves the needle for marathon training and long-term running health: committing to strength training, learning to pace the first 10K, using simple mantras to shut down spirals of self-doubt, and trusting a coach who sees more potential than you feel in the moment. Nicole also shares the less-glamorous craft that separates a good day from a disaster, including running tangents, handling race travel, and building a pre-race routine that makes the start line feel normal. Fueling and gear get the honest treatment too. This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we settle back into a more normal Monday after finally putting Tokyo in the rearview mirror. We open with a few updates from around the Kansas City running community, including a heartfelt recap of Scott's Extra Mile and the incredible turnout for a run honoring the memory of Scott Green. From there, we also look ahead to the Run the Rainbow Marathon in Jackson, Mississippi, where rising temperatures could make for a tough spring race day. But the heart of this episode centers on a controversy that lit up the running world after the New York City Marathon lottery results were released. We break down the now-deleted viral post that suggested slower runners, charity runners, and lottery runners were somehow less deserving of a place in a World Marathon Major. From a true back-of-the-pack perspective, we dig into why that mindset misses the entire point of what makes running special. We talk about the value of charity runners, the dedication it takes for runners of every pace to reach a marathon start line, and why speed alone does not determine worth in this sport. We also explore how major marathons like New York are built on more than talent alone, with fundraising, community, personal transformation, and inclusivity all playing a massive role. This episode is a defense of the everyday runner, the charity bib runner, the lottery hopeful, and anyone who has ever wondered if they truly belong in this space. We make it clear that the running world is at its best when there is room for everyone, from the front of the pack to the very back. Along the way, we also reflect on why harmful elitism still stings so deeply when it shows up in a sport that is supposed to bring people together. If you have ever felt looked down on, underestimated, or dismissed in running, this episode is for you.

Joe's stories remind us that the best finish photos don't star a watch face; they star strangers who become teammates, a sunrise on the water, and a city chanting your name at midnight.Along the way, Joe unpacks the habits that keep him moving at 71: adopting Jeff Galloway's run walk method for durability, resetting PRs to zero every year to honor the season you're in, and learning fueling by doing—from early gels without water to his notorious frozen-bottle cone stashes. We talk aging with grace, choosing races for joy rather than medals, and why your shoes should change as your body changes. And yes, there are dad jokes, kilts, Tiffany bling, and the origin of “Cool Runnings, mon.”If you've ever needed permission to look up from your GPS, talk to the person next to you, and let the day be the reward, this conversation is your sign. Hit follow, share this with a running friend, and leave a review telling us the race moment you'll never forget—then go make a new one with your next mile. coaching highlights You can reach out to us at:https://coffeycrewcoaching.comemail: Carla@coffeycrewcoaching.com FB @ Over the Next Hill Fitness GroupIG @coffeycrewcoaching.comand Buy Me a Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/Carlauhttps://hydra-patch.com/discount/OTNH20 https://hydra-patch.com/discount/OTNHBOGO?redirect=%2Fproducts%2Fhydrapatch%C2%AE https://rnwy.life code: OTNH15 https://jambar.com code: CARLA20

Born in Canada and educated mostly in the United States, Brett Larner has lived and run in Japan for the last 30 years. There, he began JapanRunningNews.blogspot.com to help the English speaking world understand more about the whys and hows of Japanese running. There's a lot to learn. After the East African countries, Japan has long led the rest of the globe in marathon success. For a time, Japanese running was mainly confined to a number of smallish, but super-elite annual marathons. However, the rapid growth of the Tokyo Marathon, now a World Marathon Major, has introduced mass participation running to a culture already attuned to elite competitions. Larner explains a number of historical reasons for Japanese success, especially among male runners. These include the unique ekiden relay races so popular in Japan, especially one--the Hakone Ekiden, at the beginning of each New Year--that rivets the entire country much as the Super Bowl does in the U.S.Also, Japan has a system of corporate running teams where the athletes are actual company employees and not just sponsored superstars. This system may encourage more everyday runners, and even non runners, to become supporters of the country's best distance elites. You can learn more about Brett Larner at the above website, or from his JRNHeadlines account on X.com.WHERE TO FIND "RUNNING: STATE OF THE SPORT"Use your smartphone to download our podcast from Apple, Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. A 2:16 marathoner in his debut and now a leader shaping the next chapter of global marathon culture, Wayne offers a rare, all-sides perspective on what it takes to build something lasting. What does it truly mean to become a World Marathon Major? How do you grow to 40,000+ runners while protecting the runner experience? Why is Sydney focused on being the most fun marathon in the world — not the biggest? Wayne shares the bold vision behind the Sydney Marathon's rise, and why the event has never strayed from its athlete-first roots. Also in this episode: how run clubs are transforming Australian running culture, what it means to support community leaders beyond race day, and how Sydney's early focus on family runs shaped its inclusive identity. The 54th New York City Marathon is in the books, and what a race it was. Nearly 60,000 runners took to the streets of the Big Apple, and near-perfect weather conditions meant that times were fast and racing was fierce. We got to witness both historically-fast and historically-close races, as three women broke the 22-year-old course record and the men's race was decided by a photo finish, the smallest margin in the race's history. Hellen Obiri is now a two-time champ—winning first in 2023 and again in 2025—and Benson Kipruto claimed his fourth World Marathon Major title by mere inches. For the second time this year, Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi claimed the top two spots on a World Marathon Major podium. In April, Lokedi held off Obiri to claim her first Boston Marathon title as both shattered the course record. Once again, Obiri and Lokedi (plus third-placer Sheila Chepkirui, the 2024 champ) worked together to run the fastest time in New York history. Only this time, Obiri turned the tables on her rival with a blistering final 800 meters and a 2:19:51 victory. For those watching along on the CITIUS MAG YouTube broadcast, Chris Chavez came very close to ending up on “Old Takes Exposed.” With about half a mile to go in the men's race, he called Benson Kipruto as the race winner. Kipruto, the Paris bronze medalist and a three-time World Marathon Major winner, had survived the whittling down of the lead pack over the second half and found himself in the driver's seat in Central Park, putting the hurt on 2024 London champ Alexander Mutiso Munyao. There was only one problem: with 200 meters left in the race, Mutiso found one last gear and began to reel Kipruto back in. Kipruto was focused on navigating the slight uphill finish of New York's and only realized Mutiso was so close in the final steps, turning on one last burst of speed to stay ahead of his challenger. It was a true photo finish, as 0.3 seconds separated the duo and both men were credited with a time of 2:08:09.You can find our full NYC Marathon recap here.____________Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Preet Majithia | @preet_athletics on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSNOMIO: Made with 80% broccoli sprout juice, 15% lemon juice, and 5% sugar, Nomio activates your body's natural defense systems to reduce lactate, speed recovery, and enhance muscle adaptation. The 54th running of the New York City Marathon is shaping up to be a great one. The women's race features four of the most exciting road racers on the scene today, all duking it out for claim to the title of world's top active marathoner. The high-quality men's field looks wide open, and the masters battle between two of the sport's GOATs is sure to keep things interesting. And you can always count on the million-plus spectators lining the streets of all five boroughs to bring unmatched energy to the race. With a forecast calling for pretty ideal conditions—low-40º temps at the start, a high that shouldn't exceed the mid-50s, and gentle breezes—the weather shouldn't slow things down too much; that's a job for the notoriously challenging course. Not counting the Sydney Marathon, which only joined the World Marathon Major ranks this August, New York City boasts the slowest course records of all WMMs. (The men's record of 2:04:58 was run by Tamirat Tola in 2023, and Margaret Okayo set the women's mark of 2:22:31 way back in 2003.) If the other non-Boston WMMs have a tendency to become time-trial-like races of pure attrition, NYC is more often a tactical affair, albeit one with plenty of bridge-induced attrition!HOW TO WATCH: The professional women's field is scheduled to start at 8:35am ET, with the men following at 9:05am. “If I had even one race like one of my many races this year in another year, I would have been like, “This year was phenomenal because I had that one really good race.' This year felt like every race but one went very well. Every race, I ended up like, ‘I can't believe I just did that' or, ‘That was awesome!' Things maybe weren't perfect, but a lot of my races were close to perfect and that was special to me.”My guest for today's episode is Conner Mantz, the new American record holder in the marathon. On a crisp October morning in Chicago, Mantz ran 2:04:43, smashing Khalid Khannouchi's 23-year-old mark and becoming the fastest American ever over 26.2 miles. It's a record that survived generations of greats from Meb Keflezighi to Ryan Hall to Galen Rupp but Conner Mantz, the soft-spoken racing assassin, made it real.If you've caught all of Conner's post-marathon recap podcast episodes that we've done on this show, you'll notice that he carries the same naïve faith that once made him think he could win NCAA titles and make Olympic teams. Anyone in pursuit of a big goal or in the middle of a long training cycle needs to listen to this episode. Along with hosts Sarah Bowen Shea and Amanda Loudin, four women who are halfway to achieving their goal—including a half-marathon in every state or running all the World Marathon Majors—share: -how they dreamed up their goal; -their approach to ticking off milestones along the way; -the joys and stand-out memories from their pursuits; -how they maintain their motivation; and, -how they see themselves reaching the “finish line.”  Instead of intro chitchat, co-host Amanda acts as a guest, telling tales of summitting 24 of the Adirondack's 46 highest peaks.
