Today is day 351 and we are studying The Tenth Commandment. 351. What does the tenth commandment forbid you to covet? It forbids me to covet my neighbor's property, possessions, relationships, or status, or anything else that is my neighbor's. (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21; Job 31:7–12, 24–28) We will conclude today by praying the He Stanza of Psalm 119 which is verses 33-40 found on page 429 of the Book of Common Prayer (2019). “This lightbulb went off that almost no one was asking these questions.”In 2006, Elie Hassenfeld and a few of his friends pooled some money they wanted to donate to charity. And they wanted to find charities where their money would go the farthest in improving lives. That information, it turned out, was incredibly hard to find. That was the seed of GiveWell. For almost a decade, GiveWell has dedicated itself to rigorously researching the impact of charities around the world and channeling donations to the ones that are the most effective at saving lives. It might sound simple, but this was a radically new approach in the world of charitable giving, and the work itself isn't simple at all.I've supported GiveWell through the years. So as the year winds down and other people might be thinking about giving to a charity, I wanted to invite Hassenfeld, GiveWell's chief executive, on the show to talk through this work. How does it measure impact? Are there limits to what you can measure? As an organization, has it made mistakes? What does it really mean to give well?If you like what you hear, I hope you'll also consider donating to GiveWell. [Original airdate: 1/9/25] Mary Danielsen welcomes back Britt Gillette and his wealth of knowledge about all things economic. Today’s system that seems to be held together with duct tape reminds me of the children’s nursery rhyme that says, “when the bough breaks…” – and then spells out the end quite clearly. Considering that the economy now global impacts us all on earth, what might 2025 bring? The last couple years have seen threats of bank closures and the cancelling of accounts of those the globalists don’t like, namely, conservatives and Christians. Alarming enough, but there is so much more going on, in particular the over-valuation of the stock market. We will rely on Britt to help us sort that out, along with the real estate market, Asian economics and their stock markets, and how AI will affect the economy in the next several years. According to the IMF, AI is a game changer for labor in particular, but also how considerable funds will be poured into the global markets from everything tech. A complex subject made easier by Britt Gillette, because while most of us rely on our pocketbook to tell us things have gone haywire, we can also rely on people with his expertise to help us dig deeper. This week on Beekeeping Today Podcast, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman welcome AJ and Chryssa Gardner of REBEL44 to discuss an approach to beekeeping rooted in stewardship rather than production. What began as a small garden project quickly evolved into a carefully managed sideline operation now spanning multiple apiaries and more than a hundred colonies. AJ shares how observing bee behavior—and listening closely to what the bees "tell you"—shaped his management philosophy. Rather than focusing on maximizing honey yields, AJ emphasizes nutrition, gentle genetics, low mite pressure, and allowing colonies to overwinter on their own terms. That mindset has led to remarkable overwintering success and strong, resilient colonies. Chryssa adds an important perspective on food systems, honey authenticity, and why knowing the beekeeper behind the honey matters. Together, they explain how REBEL44 produces hyper-local, varietal honeys, harvested in short nectar windows that capture the unique character of specific plants, locations, and seasons. From blackberry to Japanese knotweed, each harvest tells a story. The conversation also explores their immersive educational experiences, where families, beginners, and even corporate groups suit up, step into the apiary, and reconnect with nature. AJ describes how these hands-on visits often change how people think about bees, food, and stewardship. This episode is a reminder that when beekeepers slow down, observe, and put bees first, the rewards—healthy colonies, meaningful education, and exceptional honey—follow naturally. A joke about turning our show into a musical opens the door to a night of sharp turns: Broadway memories, Nashville headlines, and a candid look at what AI is doing to songwriting. We talk about that viral “AI artist” with a digital sales hit, why serviceable lyrics still miss the magic of a great hook, and whether writers should be paid when models train on decades of human work. The debate isn't doom and gloom—it's a working songwriter's blueprint for keeping creativity human and credit fair. From there, we zoom out to culture: phones in every pocket, social feeds that reward outrage, and how parents can steer the algorithm instead of being steered by it. Then we address the feedback that we're anti-women. We draw some hard lines—what's fair in elite sports, when representation feels forced, where expertise and safety matter—and ask our female listeners to weigh in so we can feature your takes on the next show. Respect and candor can live in the same room, and we're keeping the door open.We also announce a new project we're excited about: a weekly spotlight on small-town hero stories from across the country. Send us the real stuff—rescue, generosity, quiet acts of grit—and we'll share them, then honor the most impactful story at year's end. We wrap with college football chaos, conference title games that feel like injury traps, and a challenge we'll put on camera this spring: who can still drill a field goal when it counts. If you're into country music, live shows, fair play, and straight talk about AI, social media, and sports, you'll feel at home here. Subscribe, share this with a friend who loves honest conversations, and drop your hero stories and your take on fairness in sports in the comments. Sophie Meadows, a recently retired schoolteacher, resides in one of these cottages. She delights in nothing more than settling down with an enthralling mystery novel. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult

Have you ever lit a candle, whispered an incantation, and watched something uncannily fitting happen days later? Was it magic, or just a well-timed coincidence? In the world of esoteric practice, we are trained to notice patterns, to read signs, to find meaning where others see randomness. But what if some of those connections aren't what they seem? What if we're mistaking correlation for causation, and calling it magic? In this video, we're diving into the most seductive illusion in both magic and conspiracy thinking: the leap from “this happened” to “I caused it.” Drawing on philosophy, psychology, and the history of occult thought, we'll explore why our brains are wired to see patterns, how magical fallacies take root, and how to practise with both conviction and discernment. If you want to refine your craft, sharpen your thinking, and avoid the traps that turn meaningful magic into wishful thinking, stay with me. “Sleep paralysis” is defined as episodes of paralysis that occur while someone is awake, or in the middle of falling asleep. Little is known about what causes sleep paralysis. Many psychotherapists believe that the hallucinations experienced during these paralytic episodes are the reason behind most supposed paranormal events. But what if these episodes aren't the reason for paranormal events, but a window of time where the paranormal is more likely to happen? A window of time where we are most vulnerable?

It was November of 2016. North Hollywood's El Portal Theatre was visited by a merry cast of talented voice actors, musicians, and audience members. There was chocolate (graciously provided by the delicious El Buen Cacao) and a wintry faerie who, with an audience volunteer, would announce each date to start off the story. We recorded twenty-five short, holiday-themed stories that night and the 2016 Audio Advent Calendar was born. It was too good to hear just once, so we reissued it the following year. And now it's back again, with its cheerful silliness and heartfelt hope! We hope you enjoy it again or anew, as much as we did making it! "O Triple Conjunction of Bethlehem" was written by Silvie Zamora, and featured the voice talents of Abel Arias and Brett Bayone. Original music by Gary Grantham and Scott Passarella. Please visit LifeLabNotes.com for information about each date's story, its writer and performers, and the musicians who added their magic.

This is one of my favorite conversations in recent memory — with the writer Zadie Smith. Smith is the author of novels, including “White Teeth,” “On Beauty” and “NW,” as well as many essays and short stories. Her ability to give language to the kinds of quiet battles that live inside of ourselves is part of why she's been one of my favorite writers for years.“We absolutely need to gather in our identity groups sometimes for our freedoms, for our civil rights. There's absolutely no doubt about that. But for that role to be the thing that is you existentially all the way down — that is something that I personally believe all human beings revolt from at some level,” she told me when we spoke last September, shortly before  Trump's re-election.It's ideas like these that I found interesting to revisit now, in a starkly different political climate. In this conversation, we discuss Smith's novel, “The Fraud,” which Smith wrote with Trump and populism front of mind; what populism is really channeling; why Smith refuses the “bait” of wokeness; how people have been “modified” by smartphones and social media; and more. This episode contains strong language.Mentioned:Feel Free by Zadie Smith“Fascinated to Presume: In Defense of Fiction” by Zadie SmithAmusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman“Generation Why?” by Zadie SmithBook Recommendations:The Director by Daniel KehlmannThe Rebel's Clinic by Adam ShatzThe Diaries of Virginia WoolfThoughts?
