CLASSIC WITH A MODERN TWIST. Charles Zana is a highly sensitive architect who imagines each project through the lens of a French lifestyle. He is also a passionate collector like his father, and has done in-depth research on the great Italian design masters of the 20th century such as Ettore Sottsass and Carlo Scarpa. In 2019 Charles Zana was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by David Caméo, director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. “I like to always start from a classic design, and then to treat it in a modern way.” “People don't accept the simple beautiful project; they want to understand what is behind it.” “I became a good architect and then I became fashionable.”

BREAK: CU of GA  STORY 1: Composting Efforts to Combat Holiday Induced Environmental Issues Now that the Christmas gifts have been opened and Christmas dinner has been consumed, local initiatives and composting efforts are aiming to address environmental issues during the holidays. Americans contribute to a 25% increase in waste, totaling 25 million tons during the holidays. Gift-giving, driven by sales, leads to unnecessary purchases, creating more waste. Unwanted gifts add to the problem, with 53% of Americans receiving them. Wrapping paper alone generates 40 million tons of waste annually. Online shopping contributes to excessive packaging, totaling 85 million tons of paper products each year. Food waste is another challenge, with 305 million pounds wasted annually from the holidays. STORY 2: Holiday Air Travel Guide: What Can You Pack Navigating through airport security during the holiday season can be daunting. Here's a quick rundown of what you can bring on your flight. Solid food items are generally allowed in both carry-on and checked bags. But TSA officers may need to inspect these at security checkpoints. Liquids and gels follow different rules. Wine and beer in unopened retail packaging are allowed. Declare them at check-in if in checked baggage and consider extra protection like freezer bags and bubble wrap. Golf clubs and bags can be checked in. For fishing equipment, check airline size limitations for carry-ons. Secure sharp tackle in checked bags. Bicycles have varying guidelines and fees, so consult your airline. Smaller instruments like guitars can be carried on, while larger ones must be checked in. All carry-on instruments may undergo security screening. Transporting weapons is allowed following TSA guidelines. Unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container can be checked in. For more information, contact the TSA. STORY 3: And Peak and Off-Peak Driving Hours for Christmas and New Year's in Georgia  The holiday season is upon us, and AAA predicts a record-breaking travel period in Georgia. An estimated 3.6 million Georgians are set to journey at least 50 miles between Dec. 23 and Jan. 1, 2024, a 2.8% rise from last year. The vast majority, about 3.3 million, will drive, while others will take to the skies. According to AAA's VP of Travel, Debbie Haas, this could be Georgia's busiest year-end holiday travel season on record. To avoid the rush, aim for travel before 10 a.m. from Dec. 26 to 30. Peak congestion times to avoid range from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Dec. 26 to 30. If you're driving on I-20 westbound from Augusta to Atlanta, be prepared - traffic could be 23% heavier than usual. The vase was auctioned at the Wright Auction House in Chicago to an anonymous private European collector. Vincent plans to use her unexpected earnings to install an HVAC system in her recently acquired farmhouse.

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Dec. 20 at 6:45 a.m. CT: DENVER (AP) — A divided Colorado Supreme Court is removing former President Donald Trump from the state's primary ballot, saying in a historic ruling that he is ineligible to be president after his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The ruling Tuesday marks the first time in history that Section 3 of the 14th Amendment has been used to disqualify a presidential candidate. Trump's campaign spokesman called it a “flawed decision” and said they will appeal it to the U.S. Supreme Court, which has never ruled on Section 3. The provision forbids those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office and was used mainly after the Civil War to keep former Confederates out of government. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The White House and Mexico's president are sharply criticizing a new Texas law that would allow police to arrest migrants who illegally cross into the U.S. and empower local judges to order them to leave the country. Also Tuesday, civil rights groups and Texas' largest border county filed a lawsuit. It came less than 24 hours after Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed the law. The groups say it's an unconstitutional reach over the U.S. government's authority on immigration. Abbott said Tuesday that Texas is going to such dramatic lengths because of frustration over the Biden administration's immigration policies. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia television station says a news helicopter has crashed in a forest in New Jersey, killing both the pilot and photographer on board. WPVI-TV says a pilot and photographer from its news team were in the helicopter when it went down about 8 p.m. Tuesday in Wharton State Forest in Hammonton. The helicopter was returning from an assignment at the Jersey Shore when it crashed in the woods. The station says New Jersey State Police troopers were able to locate the crash site, which is difficult to access. The station says it's unclear what caused the crash. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas' top leader is in Cairo for talks on the war in Gaza. Ismail Haniyeh's visit Wednesday is part of a flurry of diplomacy aimed at securing another cease-fire and hostage swap at a moment when the militant group is putting up stiff resistance to Israel's offensive. It comes a day after Hamas fired rockets that set off air raid sirens in central Israel. Israel has called on the rest of the world to blacklist Hamas as a terrorist organization, saying it must be eradicated in the wake of its Oct. 7 rampage across southern Israel that triggered the war. But the sides have recently relaunched indirect talks recently. A woman who bought a vase for $3.99 at a Virginia thrift store recently sold it for $107,000. Jessica Vincent said he bought it at a Goodwill outside Richmond and thought it would look nice in her house. But she soon learned the vase was extremely rare. It came from the Venetian island of Murano and was designed by the late architect Carlo Scarpa. The vase sold this month through Wright Auction House to a private European collector. Vincent plans to buy a new heating system in her farmhouse with the money. She is currently using two space heaters. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has memorialized Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as a pioneer in the legal world who inspired generations of women. O'Connor was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Roberts joined Biden in speaking at Tuesday's services at Washington National Cathedral, calling her a "strong, influential and iconic jurist.” O'Connor was an Arizona native who served as an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism on the high court for more than two decades. The rancher's daughter was nominated in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan and came to wield considerable influence on the nine-member court. O'Connor retired at age 75 and died Dec. 1 in Phoenix. WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is defending his comments about migrants crossing the southern border, who he had said are poisoning the blood of America. He said at a campaign rally in Waterloo, Iowa, on Tuesday that he had not read “Mein Kampf,” referencing Adolf Hitler's fascist manifesto. He reiterated his “blood” purity comments from over the weekend and said immigrants in the U.S. illegally are “destroying the blood of our country.” Trump has faced mounting criticism for his intensifying rhetoric as he seeks to make immigration policy a key piece of his second-term agenda. Experts have noted his language echoes writings from Hitler about the “purity” of Aryan blood, which underpinned Nazi Germany's systematic murder of millions of Jews. Ja Morant makes his season debut, Providence knocks off Marquette, Aaron Rodgers won't be returning to the Jets this season and the Rangers top the Maple Leafs. SEATTLE (AP) — Washington's Kalen DeBoer has been named The Associated Press coach of the year in college football. The Huskies are 13-0, won the Pac-12 championship and have a spot in the College Football Playoff in just DeBoer's second year in charge. The Huskies will face Texas in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 with a spot in the CFP championship game on the line. In DeBoer's two seasons, the Huskies are 24-2 overall. GRINDAVIK, Iceland (AP) — A volcano has erupted in southwestern Iceland with a flash of light into the evening sky in the land known for fire and ice. Iceland's Meteorological Office says the eruption appears to have occurred late Monday near the town of Grindavik. The town was evacuated in November after strong seismic activity damaged homes and raised fears of an imminent eruption. The volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula is southwest of the capital, Reykjavik. The eruption could last days and isn't expected to release ash into the air like another volcano did in 2010 that halted flights in Europe. There were no disruptions of flights to and from Iceland on Tuesday and international flight corridors remain open. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. The 15-second ultra high-definition video was beamed to Earth from NASA's Psyche spacecraft, 19 million miles away. It took less than two minutes for the video to reach Earth, sent at the system's maximum bit rate. The video was loaded for the demo before Psyche blasted off to a metal-rich asteroid in October. Team members at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory decided to feature an employee's playful kitty in the video released this week. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Robin Monotti discusses how people are slowly wrapping their heads around the growing authoritarianism of the past few years and are coming to understand deep politics at different times with different subjects (e.g. 9/11, climate, pandemic, empire). For Robin it began with the assassination of Aldo Moro (e.g. Operation Gladio and the strategy of tension). He explains one reason people suffer cognitive dissonance when it comes to accepting the reality of state terrorism. Nothing will be resolved at the top-down political level, so the responsibility is now on all of us to resist and do what we can to defend our rights. We also touch on "team no virus", the digital control grid, health and the spiritual dimension, the permanent (bio)security state, the green agenda, and his latest film production, River of Freedom, which shares the inside story of the New Zealand Convoy and Parliament protest.

Stefan Zweig, Üç Büyük Usta: Balzac – Dickens – DostoyevskiÇeviri: Nafer Ermiş, İş Bankası Kültür YayınlarıÖzgün Adı: Drei Meister 5.Vittorio Gregotti (1927 – 2020) 6.Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) 7.Richard Rogers, The Lloyd’s Building 8.Norman Foster, ST: Mary Axe 9.Renzo Piano, The Shard 10.Konstantin Melnikov’un 1935’te, Rusya’da mimarlık gazetesinde yayınlanan röportajını İngilizce’ye çevirmiştik. It’s interesting to contemplate why Claire Kelly’s colorful and expertly patterned toy-like animals are so appealing, but perhaps more curious to imagine is what theywould see in us. Much of her recent work centers on elephants because of their unique role as a beloved childhood toy, a popular decorative figure with a strong history in glassmaking, and a perilously threatened species.   In work that examines the connections humanity has with animals and our larger relationship to the world, the artist has created a series of fantastic microcosms that bring a consciousness to their decorative status. As a story about the fragility and conservation of these small worlds is told, their role in a grander scheme is revealed.   “We live in a time when our smallest decisions can affect our environment in unpredictable ways. As a conscientious inhabitant, I am constantly weighing my choices and attempting to choose the lesser evil. My works are a gentle mirror allowing us to examine our contradictory world.”   Graduating with a BFA from Alfred University in 1996, Kelly subsequently worked collaboratively with Anthony Schafermeyer from 2000 to 2008 as Schafermeyer/Kelly Glass. In 2008, she moved to Providence, Rhode Island, to assist glass artist Toots Zynsky with her work.  During this time, Kelly developed her own sculptural series integrating traditional Venetian glassblowing and various cold working processes. Greatly influenced by the unconventional forms and patterning of mid-century Venetian Masters such as Napoleone Martinuzzi and Carlo Scarpa as well as contemporary masters Dick Marquis and Zynsky, Kelly works with cane and murrini techniques in a unique exploration of line, pattern, and color.    In spring of 2017, Kelly worked as Artist in Residence at the Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, where she created a new body of work using specialty 104 COE glass from Effetre, a glass company based in Murano, Italy. The artist has recently been awarded residencies at Salem Art Works Salem, New York, and at the Museum of Glass, Tacoma, Washington, to further her processes and designs.   From October 12 through December 10 new work was exhibited, and Kelly presented a lecture and demonstration at Duncan McClellan Glass Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida, in a show with friend and hot glass artist Jen Violette titled Vibrant Perspectives. Penland Gallery, Penland, North Carolina, Vetri gallery, Seattle, Washington, and Montague Gallery in San Francisco, California, also represent Kelly’s work.   A self described “unexpected instructor,” Kelly has taught workshops at Penland School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School, the Pittsburgh Glass Center, The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the Centro Fundacion del Vidrio in Spain. Her 2019 teaching schedule includes March 4 – 8 at Espace Verre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and March 18 – 22 at the Glass Spot in Richmond, Virginia.

Abstract: The title of this lecture is explained by Richard Murphy Architects' location between two different points pf view. There is little in our work that might be called avant-garde. The office does not subscribe to the high-octane world of the international 'starchitects' depositing iconic buildings in different cultures around the world, which whilst having some superficial photo-journalistic value, rarely repay close inspection. The other position is represented by the society in which we work, Edinburgh in particular, but also elsewhere in the UK. This is a city in which many citizens wish that the modern era had never occurred. Modern architecture, it seems to be universally agreed, has spoilt the view. However it is essential for the health of our culture that we make buildings that are recognisably of today so that in the future there will be some history of this era to preserve. Rooting recognisably new buildings into old places or particular landscapes; contributing towards rather than damaging, their location; continuing rather than fossilising, the history of a place: these are our objectives. We call it architecture of its time and place. Biography: Richard Murphy was educated at Newcastle and Edinburgh Universities. Before founding Richard Murphy Architects he worked for MacCormac Jamieson and Pritchard Architects in London, and directed the edinburgh office of Alsop Lyall & Stormer Architects. He has taught at Edinburgh University, Robert Gordon University, Edinburgh College of Art, Strathclyde University, The Technical University of Braunschweig, the University of Virginia and Syracruse University, New York State. Richard's publications include Carlo Scarpa and the Castelvecchio (Butterworths Architecture, 1991), Querini Stampalia Foundation, Carlo Scarpa (Phaidon Press, 1983) and An Architects' Appreciation of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Bellew Publishing, 1990). He is an Academician of the Royal Scottish Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an Honorary Fellow of Napier University. His practice has won 21 RIBA and RIAI awards in as many years.
