It seemed appropriate to sit down with Stu Bradley, VP, Fraud, Risk & Compliance, SAS, to discuss how SAS delivers trusted AI for the federal government. In a recent interview, Kim Brand from CMS stated they disburse one billion dollars a day in claims. If you have just a 1% fraud rate, that means $10 million a day of waste. Today, we asked how SAS can help. The discussion focused on the importance of robust fraud prevention in government programs, emphasizing the need for efficient data ingestion and decision-making. SaaS has a 50-year record of regulating $300 billion in transactions and saving $500 million in fraud. The conversation highlighted the significance of governance in AI, with organizations that prioritize trustworthy innovation generating 60% higher returns on AI initiatives. During the interview, Bradley details the importance of preventing fraud. Today, federal organizations should be asking "What do I need to do to be ready for whatever comes next?" The cost for a typical "pay and chase" approach is high, and the results are paltry. The speakers also discussed the critical role of data integration and real-time analysis in preventing fraud, noting that 5% of payments involve fraud. The importance of partnerships between federal and state agencies to combat fraud was also underscored.

Longest totality on land: 2 minutes 18 seconds at Látrabjarg, Iceland. Millions gathered across northern Spain, with the path also crossing A Coruña, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia and Palma (Madrid and Barcelona were just outside the path). Observers reported seeing the solar corona, a prominence, and Jupiter, Mercury and Venus during totality. Spain gets another total eclipse on August 2, 2027.**Three supermassive black holes, one galaxy.** Astronomers led by Hannah Übler (Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics) used JWST to confirm three actively feeding supermassive black holes in galaxy J0148-4214, 12.5 billion light-years away — the first such triple system ever confirmed. Two of the three are on course to merge.**Virgin Galactic delays commercial flights to 2027.** The company's upgraded Delta-class spaceplane will now begin commercial service in February 2027, pushed back from Q4 2026, to complete avionics and systems installation. An increase in car parking revenue generated at University Hospital Limerick has been described as “blatant profiteering off people in tragic situations”. HSE figures show revenue from parking charges at the hospital increased from €446,000 in 2021 to €1.44 million last year, representing an increase of more than 200%. The increase comes despite a commitment in the Programme for Government to reduce car parking costs at hospitals. HSE Regional Health Forum Midwest member and Shannonbanks Sinn Féin Councillor James Ryan has described the situation as “disturbing and wrong”.

The latest figures from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities make for stark reading. More than 328,000 households are behind on their electricity bills, with almost 189,000 in gas arrears. Should you stop doing Roth conversions as part of your retirement planning after Senator Ron Wyden's new legislation targeting specific retirement accounts? David McKnight breaks down the key aspects of the proposal and what it actually means for the average American (and their retirement).  Show Notes In this episode, David McKnight looks at whether you should stop doing Roth conversions following Senator Ron Wyden's introduction of legislation for taxing Roth IRAs. For David, 99.9% of Americans should continue investing in Roth accounts with a high degree of confidence. One of the biggest misconceptions floating around is that Congress wants to start taxing everyone's Roth IRA.  However, that is simply not what Senator Wyden's proposal does, as its focus are so-called mega-retirement accounts. These are retirement accounts – whether traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, or Roth 401(k)s – that have grown to extraordinary sizes, often tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Senator Wyden's proposal only applies to taxpayers with very high incomes ($400,000 for individuals; $450,000 for married couples) and only if your combined retirement accounts exceed $10 million. In other words, if you don't have more than $10 million spread across your retirement accounts, the proposal doesn't apply to you. Do you exceed that threshold? Then, know that the proposal would require annual distributions from the excess amount. The rule becomes even more restrictive when balances exceed $20 million. David believes that the average American shouldn't be nervous about investing in Roth accounts – he shares four reasons why. Reason #1: Congress likes Roth accounts, because, from a Government's perspective, Roth accounts accelerate tax revenue. The second reason is the fact that Roth assets are still a relatively small piece of the retirement landscape. "Most retirement money in America is still sitting inside traditional tax-deferred accounts", he explains. Reason #3: the Government has always had an implicit agreement with America on Roth accounts. The fourth reason why David doesn't believe you should be nervous about investing in Roth accounts is that they're still your best protection against what's coming down the road. The national debt is set to grow by $2 trillion per year over the next 10 years and $3 trillion per year after that. According to a Penn Wharton study, once the country hits a debt-to-GDP of 200% in 2040, no combination of increasing taxes or cutting spending will prevent the nation's financial collapse. That's why, David is confident that around 2035 Congress will have little choice but to tax increases. In 2023, Edmonton Police expanded online reporting to include hate incidents—conduct that is not a crime—and allowed reports to be filed on behalf of someone else. In 2024, Crime Stoppers, EPS and the Government of Alberta launched buses displaying: "See hate. Report hate." In 2026, Parliament passed Bill C-9 with Liberal and Bloc support despite opposition from the Conservatives, NDP, Greens and more than 40 civil society organizations, including the CBA, CCLA, CLC and Egale.Britain adopted a similar system in 2014. Since then, police have recorded 133,000+ non-crime hate incidents. In 2023, 37 police forces made 12,183 arrests over electronic communications, with fewer than 1,119 convictions. BURNHAM'S DELIBERATELY MISSING THE POINT! We're being encouraged to argue about WHERE illegal migrants should be housed. Cities? Towns? Rural communities? Hotels? Camps? But I'm asking something much more fundamental: WHY ARE THEY STILL COMING ACROSS THE CHANNEL IN THE FIRST PLACE?  Successive governments have failed to control Britain's borders — and now ordinary communities are effectively being told they have to "do their bit" and accept the consequences. No! POLITICIANS NEED TO DO THEIR BIT. Secure the border. Stop the boats. Process claims rapidly. Remove people who have no legal right to remain. And create a system that actually deters illegal crossings rather than endlessly managing them after they've happened. That's why I believe Burnham is deliberately missing the point. By turning today's argument into a row about whether migrants should be moved from cities into rural areas, the debate shifts away from the enormous political failure at the heart of this crisis: BRITAIN HAS LOST CONTROL OF ITS BORDERS.  And before somebody inevitably starts screaming "racist" or "far-right", let's be absolutely clear. Wanting secure borders isn't racist. Wanting immigration laws enforced isn't racist. Wanting failed asylum seekers removed isn't racist. And believing governments should plan properly instead of constantly firefighting crises isn't extremist.  The same principle applies to our prisons. We don't want dangerous prisoners released early simply because politicians failed to provide enough prison places. When the controversy involves men convicted over the killing of PC Andrew Harper, the public understandably wants to know why the system reached this position. Governments know roughly how many prisoners they have. They know roughly how many people are entering the asylum system. SO PLAN AHEAD! BUILD THE CAPACITY! CONTROL THE BORDER! And then, to cap it all, Burnham is reportedly calling a COBRA meeting over the hot weather. IT'S AUGUST! Where's that emergency mentality over the Channel? Where's the COBRA-level urgency over prison capacity? Where's the detailed plan to stop illegal crossings rather than simply deciding where people should be housed once they're here? There are few things more frustrating for an Emergency Physician than caring for patient after patient who lands in the ED not because it's necessarily the best place for their care, but because every other door in the health care system was closed, confusing or impossible to find. Emergency Medicine and Primary Care often operate in different worlds—one built around rapid diagnosis and uncertainty, the other around continuity and prevention—but our patients move constantly between the two.
